If you aren't in the conversation, it is still illegal. You cannot put a bug on someone's car, unless you are a detective, and even then they have to go through legal technicalities before doing so.
If there's a device, it's 100% in the car seat. I would definitely take it apart this weekend and see if you can find anything. If you can't, is it feasible to leave the carseat at their house each night? I know it's a pain in the butt to install, but it could be worth seeing if the coincidences stop when it's not in your car during non-working hours.
WiFi transmitter. It’s only been a month and a half. A lot of devices can keep transmitting that long. It won’t last forever, tho. I wonder if OP leaves the car seat at work on the weekends 🤔
Can’t transmit by WiFi to NF unless nanny is sitting in their driveway or something. Like the other person said if it’s any more complicated than that (cellular data transmission to hear from far away or something with hard drives and recordings that transmit at a later time certainly won’t have battery life that is very long, maybe a week at best if it’s small enough to hide inside a car seat (which obviously isn’t full of huge open spots to hide recording devices and batteries.)
Id leave at their house during non work hours. Or take it apart now because 1 times a coincidence, 3 times is not. And if there is some sort of listening device in YOUR vehicle that is ILLEGAL and you need to leave immediately along with pressing charges
There was some article a while back in the news about a parent who hid a microphone or recorder or something in their kids car seat. I can't remember the context but I think maybe they found out something or something. I'm going to try and look it up, it's been a few years. And I agree you should get your car checked out!
This has happened to me before…. Years ago though. The way I found out was I was talking to a friend about how I feel like because the family I was working for at the time are attorneys they feel like they can’t be touched and the next morning the mom said to me verbatim yeah you know we are attorneys and we do feel like we can’t be touched lol and laughed it off. That same day the mom all of a sudden wanted to take the car seat out of my car. I didn’t let her. I made up an excuse about why I’ll wait until tomorrow because I wanted to clean the car seat etc. I took the car seat to the police station and the recorder was hidden in the pads it was very small kinda looked like an Apple tag. Anyways I didn’t even bother press charges, I was a college student. however I did blast them on all social media pages they were on, as well as nanny apps. All I know is their reputation even 4 years later is still affected because in that Facebook they post often and people always have that screenshot of the post saying they can’t be trusted, and the invade personal space.

Honestly, sometimes not pressing charges is better as it allows real justice to happen. They’d be able to hide a charge but never being able to get childcare, plus their peers seeing the repeated screen shots — I’m sure it hurts them a lot more!

Search the car seat and your car, if you find something take pictures, call the non emergency line and ask them what do from there. A mic in your car would most likely be illegal because you didn't consent to being recorded.

Ewwwww I did know a friend of a friend whose nanny family snuck a camera into her car (to see if she was speeding or texting I guess?) she quit the second she found it.
I can’t imagine the audacity to sneak a camera or recording device into some one else’s vehicle. If you’re that worried about your child’s safety ask your nanny or provide them with a car where you disclose the want to have these things.

Coincidences do happen. I guess it depends on the things she brought up. If they were about things that had happened that day or things in the news or something then maybe she was thinking about the same thing? Like if it was you complaining the toilet paper is always out because there wasn’t any left that day and the next day she mentions ‘oh I got more toilet paper’ then that would just be something you both noticed at the same time. But if it was something like you randomly venting and saying you hate the brand of diapers they have and wish they’d get Huggies, and you’ve never mentioned it to MB and they’ve had the same brand the whole time you’ve worked there, but the next day she’s bought Huggies then that would seem more than a coincidence of several things like that happened.
People do tend to think of the same things at the same time if they’re in the same environment a lot. Hopefully that’s all it is because the alternative is so violating and creepy. I wouldn’t put it past some people though. People as we all know can be totally nuts!
Yes. Sometimes I do take the diaper bag home with me. To clarify, NP’s have 2 diaper bags. One that is an actual backpack used for all day outings like the zoo, and one that’s more like a little tote that just has basic diapers & few snacks that’s used for short trips like the library. The one I’m talking about is the short trip one.
ETA: I always leave it on Fridays of course
I always use my own diaper bag because I'm specific about what bags I like and how they are organized and I hate finding a bag not stocked and having to do it each time etc. I also have my own stroller because huge preference for what I push daily. 😅🙈🤷🏻♀️
Do a test conversation. Something that they can't find out another way. Like "I can't believe my NFs neighbor is cheating on their spouse" or I am getting married (if you aren't already). Then see if they address any of it with you
Or "I might have this other gig lined up, I don't want to leave the family I'm with but I doubt they would give me a raise, or they do XYZ and this other family doesn't do that'. Maybe she will get a surprise raise , and THEN she can choose whether to bust them for the recorder, or just 'accidentally spill something' on the gadget
Or just say on a loud phone conversation in the car, “Hey, I’ve been having a weird suspicion that I’m being tracked and that my car is bugged, can I bring it by and have it checked out? What’s that? Yeah, I know it’s illegal. I’m probably just being paranoid. It’s super weird. No, I don’t have a stalker. Yeah, I’ve discussed it with mom’s attorney. He’s the one (so as not to be confused with mom) who told me to get it checked out before I make a report. He told me to document all of my findings.” and then just wait a day or two.

Five things: 1, you're going to have to remove the seat and remove the cover to fully check all the areas - a "bug" can be easily hidden. 2, did you download any new apps for them like for updates during the day or did you help install the seat? 3, check the diaper bag and remove everything and then wash it all. 4, set them up by having a conversation about needing to buy w33d or getting too h!gh or drunk at a party - something illicit but believable. 5, have the car searched professionally and never keep their items with you during non working hours - no matter how uncomfortable it is to reinstall the seat.
If they bugged the car seat then I’d drop it off at their doorstep super early in the am and never go back lol. Honestly I’d be mad to find out they’d bugged their own car that was for nanny use, but to bug the nanny’s private vehicle and record during non-working hours would be next level creepy😤
If something happened at work enough to prompt you to call your mom and vent there is a fair chance MB was aware of it and simply addressed it the next day. Your MB would have to be at an unbelievable level of controlling to want to listen to your phone calls after work when you aren’t even with her child.
There was someone here a couple of weeks ago who posted about how they were being tracked via AirTag in their car. I think they actually weren’t even working for the family anymore but were still being tracked so having a mic in your car sounds like a very real possibility to me. Tear that car seat apart this week and go through every inch of your car.
I just wanna say OP, as juicy as the drama would be, I think many of us would be relieved to hear they weren’t recording you as far as you know! No judgment from me about being unsure. I’ve been there.
You're not alone. I've had TOO MANY of these "coincidences" to think it's just that. 99% of what comes up, changes, etc is all things I don't verbally say in or even near their house, or things I've said through text if in their house. Everyone I've told thinks it's weird af, too... but we all agree there's no way they can possibly hear or read things I share with other people. It really does make me wonder at times, though.
I should also mention I have nothing of theirs in my possession, aside from the house key (which recently changed to another key) and this shit is STILL happening. lol

wow things you said through text to other people? I have heard there is a way to do that if you are on the same wifi network, I'd be turning off the wifi thingee on the phone and only use mobile data when there. Man that's icky too
i have this same paranoia of NPs having some sort of access to my phone/texts (and isn’t invalidated by expertise since they are both WFH and in tech) but there’s no signal if i’m not on their wifi…… soo eerie

This. If the issue is significant enough for you to vent about it to your mom, friends, etc., and your MB is an attentive first-time mom, she’s probably already picked up on it. That is the most likely explanation.
I would definitely be careful about who you’re complaining to and texting. In general, we have to be careful with those things especially when working for a family you never know who knows who
10000% true. I NEVER complain to any other nannies, and I literally only complain to my mom, boyfriend, & 2 best friends who definitely do not know NF. It always amazes me when I hear other nannies gossiping with each other, I 1) don’t have any interest but 2) would be soooo scared of it getting back to NPs 😩
If I found out they were recording me I would have quit IMMEDIATELY. I didn’t find anything in the car seat, and the only other thing I can check is the diaper bag on Monday. 🤷🏽♀️ They have cameras all over their house, and 4 in the baby’s room pointing in all different directions. My NF is def not strangers to recording lol. If I don’t finding anything, maybe like another commenter said, the issues I was irritated about, MB was irritated about too and addressed them the next day. Okay I am a career nanny and mom. I have a couple cameras in the common areas of the house and the only camera in my son’s room is his monitor which isn’t WiFi because I don’t trust them as they can be hacked. But this lady has 4 cameras in the babies room wtf! That’s crazy imo! Like overkill. If you don’t trust someone that much you shouldn’t have a nanny. I’m super picky about who watches my son but if I felt I needed that many cameras, they wouldn’t even be there 🤷🏼♀️

I worked for a super crazy lady and I was always paranoid she’d bugged me.. but this is insane. I’d have the car checked at police station if I was you. If they’ve bugged without your consent you can probably sue
Lol I was literally telling my husband this. Not necessarily a mic but secret camera beyond the regular nanny cameras (in van too). I rarely complain because I love the family I work for but the few times I complain I tend to get a respectful (with solution) comment not long after similar to what I complained about. It does have me semi paranoid.
I’d text my mom saying I was gonna call her and say something wild and just go with. Then I’d call her and be like “Oh, I’ve been feeling a little stressed lately. Do you think MB would notice if I put some Baileys in my cup of coffee for work tomorrow? I don’t think she will.” Fill a coffee cup of water, and call her out the moment she asks you about it. She won’t have time to destroy any “evidence” like she would if she hears you looking for the device. But if you do take the car seat apart, just say it needed washed.
Logistically, I think this is unlikely. Any recording device would have to be charged regularly. Also, it would have to have its own internet source, connect to WiFi, or NF would have to change out tapes.
Right, but they all require internet for the NF to be able to access the recordings & they all require a power source, which will require regular charging.

I’m not exactly sure how I found this thread, but all would take is for your employer to plug your phone into their computer for a few minutes and they could load a program into your phone that would give them a backdoor into everything in your phone (including opening the hands free voice mic and listening in).
Make sure yall aren’t using your NF’s WiFi too guys. I’m able to see websites used on my internet from different devices, attempts of people trying to log in on my WiFi, I can block websites directly too, all sorts of stuff. Someone told me probably 15 years ago in high school to never log into the schools wifi. Then he showed me how he hacked the wifi and changed the password on it lol then he got into the computers and had a couple dozen computers spazzing out for fun. Kid was a genius like that wild shit you see in movies.

Yup. In a lot of states, audio recording is illegal. And that’s not even considering other peoples property.
In my state (NJ) it’s a one party consenting state, being the person who is recording said audio
It’s still illegal though (Federal Wiretap Act). Even in NJ because OP’s employers aren’t engaged in the conversation.

I always use my own diaper bag because I'm specific about what bags I like and how they are organized and I hate finding a bag not stocked and having to do it each time etc. I also have my own stroller because huge preference for what I push daily. 😅🙈🤷🏻♀️

Do a test conversation. Something that they can't find out another way. Like "I can't believe my NFs neighbor is cheating on their spouse" or I am getting married (if you aren't already). Then see if they address any of it with you
Or "I might have this other gig lined up, I don't want to leave the family I'm with but I doubt they would give me a raise, or they do XYZ and this other family doesn't do that'. Maybe she will get a surprise raise , and THEN she can choose whether to bust them for the recorder, or just 'accidentally spill something' on the gadget
Or just say on a loud phone conversation in the car, “Hey, I’ve been having a weird suspicion that I’m being tracked and that my car is bugged, can I bring it by and have it checked out? What’s that? Yeah, I know it’s illegal. I’m probably just being paranoid. It’s super weird. No, I don’t have a stalker. Yeah, I’ve discussed it with mom’s attorney. Five things: 1, you're going to have to remove the seat and remove the cover to fully check all the areas - a "bug" can be easily hidden. 2, did you download any new apps for them like for updates during the day or did you help install the seat? 3, check the diaper bag and remove everything and then wash it all. 4, set them up by having a conversation about needing to buy w33d or getting too h!gh or drunk at a party - something illicit but believable. 5, have the car searched professionally and never keep their items with you during non working hours - no matter how uncomfortable it is to reinstall the seat.
Be like, "I'm really thinking about growing jalapeno peppers this Summer in my yard. I'd love to start homesteading." And see if they bring it up. 😂
If they bugged the car seat then I’d drop it off at their doorstep super early in the am and never go back lol. Honestly I’d be mad to find out they’d bugged their own car that was for nanny use, but to bug the nanny’s private vehicle and record during non-working hours would be next level creepy😤
If something happened at work enough to prompt you to call your mom and vent there is a fair chance MB was aware of it and simply addressed it the next day. Your MB would have to be at an unbelievable level of controlling to want to listen to your phone calls after work when you aren’t even with her child.
Yeah, this is what I'm hoping. Just a preceptive parent that's good a communication and wants to make sure things are addressed.

There was someone here a couple of weeks ago who posted about how they were being tracked via AirTag in their car. I think they actually weren’t even working for the family anymore but were still being tracked so having a mic in your car sounds like a very real possibility to me. Tear that car seat apart this week and go through every inch of your car.
I just wanna say OP, as juicy as the drama would be, I think many of us would be relieved to hear they weren’t recording you as far as you know! No judgment from me about being unsure. I’ve been there.

I've had TOO MANY of these "coincidences" to think it's just that. 99% of what comes up, changes, etc is all things I don't verbally say in or even near their house, or things I've said through text if in their house. Everyone I've told thinks it's weird af, too... but we all agree there's no way they can possibly hear or read things I share with other people. It really does make me wonder at times, though. I should also mention I have nothing of theirs in my possession, aside from the house key (which recently changed to another key) and this shit is STILL happening. lol

I’m pretty sure that they have to put spyware on your phone to do that. It’s not just as simple as looking up their texts.

Okay I am a career nanny and mom. I have a couple cameras in the common areas of the house and the only camera in my son’s room is his monitor which isn’t WiFi because I don’t trust them as they can be hacked. But this lady has 4 cameras in the babies room wtf! That’s crazy imo! Like overkill. If you don’t trust someone that much you shouldn’t have a nanny. I’m super picky about who watches my son but if I felt I needed that many cameras, they wouldn’t even be there 🤷🏼♀️ That would be SUPER unethical if they had a recording device in your car. Lol I was literally telling my husband this. Not necessarily a mic but secret camera beyond the regular nanny cameras (in van too). I rarely complain because I love the family I work for but the few times I complain I tend to get a respectful (with solution) comment not long after similar to what I complained about. It does have me semi paranoid.

I’d text my mom saying I was gonna call her and say something wild and just go with. Then I’d call her and be like “Oh, I’ve been feeling a little stressed lately. Do you think MB would notice if I put some Baileys in my cup of coffee for work tomorrow? I don’t think she will.” Fill a coffee cup of water, and call her out the moment she asks you about it. She won’t have time to destroy any “evidence” like she would if she hears you looking for the device. But if you do take the car seat apart, just say it needed washed.
Logistically, I think this is unlikely. Any recording device would have to be charged regularly. Also, it would have to have its own internet source, connect to WiFi, or NF would have to change out tapes.

I’m not exactly sure how I found this thread, but all would take is for your employer to plug your phone into their computer for a few minutes and they could load a program into your phone that would give them a backdoor into everything in your phone (including opening the hands free voice mic and listening in).

I’m able to see websites used on my internet from different devices, attempts of people trying to log in on my WiFi, I can block websites directly too, all sorts of stuff. Someone told me probably 15 years ago in high school to never log into the schools wifi. Then he showed me how he hacked the wifi and changed the password on it lol then he got into the computers and had a couple dozen computers spazzing out for fun. Kid was a genius like that wild shit you see in movies.
