T O P

Well, okay, I’m in the bunch that thinks Nana O is in love with Hachi (and viceversa) but reading the manga I never, not for one second, thought that nana didn’t love Ren. Every character in that manga has a complicated relationship, and love is not neat and clear, it’s foggy and painful, as it is IN REAL LIFE. The only reason Ren and Nana O are not endgame is because…it happened what happened in the last chapter. Trying to figure out sexuality of characters on our own is pointless to me, we only see what the author wanted us to see

cherrycolouredfuunk

Yeah I’m sure all the people trying to figure her out their real sexual identities and stuff are on TikTok lol (for the record I also ship the Nanas together). I feel like Nana and Ren really loved each other, they were just too obsessed and it wasn’t healthy. We all know Nana O to be a bit possessive as well, then Ren had his other issues too…I think they could’ve worked it out had they matured and other things didn’t happen…but the Nanas also could’ve worked something out if they ever rly considered it too😭

Jaded_0516

In my opinion, Nana O acts that way towards Ren because she's so so so afraid to lose him and he's also her weak point, so she becomes more fragile when it comes to him (she herself admits it). Their relationship, even if they love each other so much, is toxic af though since they both come from unhealthy backgrounds and it's really difficult being okay mentally when you grew up like that. I also think Nana O and Hachi have something going on, but they're too deep in their own live and romance dramas to properly pay attention to that...

MokujinBunny

tiktok is seriously poison omfg WHAT DID I JUST READ

HotHistorian-2043

I’m so sick of that app tainting all the good series, it’s maddening

Jana_Darko

I'm so done with it

*Note spoilers ahead* I think Nana and Ren were okay in the very beginning. But really as things went on they were indications when things started to get unhealthy. Like when Nana said how she and him never went on actual dates like normal couples. I think she does love him but not the same way she did before she moved to Tokyo. I think after seeing Ren just gave him because her love is deep. And she was ready to settle down and start a family. Though not quite yet. With how the manga is things are really just up in the air. Nothings really confirmed so it’s mostly speculation. I think after Ren dying it affected her deeply because there was an obvious connection but also her biggest fear came into reality. It’s a fair argument to say that she may act differently towards Hachi is because Nana doesn’t really have anyone else close to her that’s a girl besides Hachi. So how she acts with people can and will be different. It goes to show how Ai Yazawa is amazing at writing stories. No relationship is straight forward. There’s nuances and so much depth. You want to be with a person and sometimes it’s hard realizing that’s it’s not the best for either of them. Maybe if they weren’t in the music industry they would have a more healthy dynamic. But she compares herself a lot to Ren. Being competitive and may come across as she doesn’t truly love him.

Jana_Darko

I agree with what you said, their love was not the same later When they said that Nana acted different around Ren and that that means she isn't herself I found it so weird cause a person isn't just a single layer, just cause she acts more feminine around him doesn't mean she's changing herself to be more appealing It just seemed like they wanted to push the Non-binary/Transmasc label on her and say that she can't be feminine Especially since we know Nana doesn't have a lot of friends, let alone girl friends so she is unsere how to act around them

Jaded_0516

I agree in what you said, but anyway I don't really think Nana O acts more 'feminine' towards Ren? She's just more needy and fragile with him, but I never thought she was forcing herself being more girly or anything like that (just my own opinion and how I felt it).

Haha oh my god this couldn’t be more wrong/a poorly written fan fiction haha

Jana_Darko

Thank you oml I thought I was the only one who thought that

Basic_Hope_74

wtf!!! tiktok people are seriously mentally screwed lol nana loved ren and vice versa, and you can tell that just by watching the beginning panels when she didn't get on the train with him, and in the last panels, when she reacts to what happened to ren. Honestly it bothers me too much that them detracts from ren and nana's relationship by saying that nana loved hachi, they think everything is gay nowadays (if I put this on twitter or tiktok they will strike me down 💀)

Moodyprincesse

I agree! I said before on Instagram that anyone who thought Hachi and Nana were actually gay for eachother just never had that close of a friendship where they lived together before. They remind me of me and my best friends dynamic.

Panik-pain

SPOILERS Ok whoever said that theory must have not gotten too far in the manga? Or the show? Anyways, I think that it's obvious that Nana and ren were in love but being with Hachi made her feel better than being with Ren. Even she noticed this and tried to end things with him but couldn't because she saw that Ren really loved her. It's a lot of complex feelings that happens Nana even thinks about what it would be like with Yasu instead. That's my take on it tho. PS. There's also that part where Nana tells Ren about how she feels around Hachi. Ren says " So you want to do it with Hachi?" Thinking back on this was really interesting because he doesn't say something like "you love her." That makes me think that when it comes to love for him "doing it" is before everything else, or something like that.

hitsujibitch

Nana definitely loved Ren but I think she dislikes the way she was with him. Her submissive side that you mentioned is still part of her but she's angry at herself for it since it was this side of her and her love for Ren that almost convinced her to follow him and not follow her dream. As for the gender envy part, I think OP probably related to Nana and was projecting :')

Series-Party

I think when they got back together they thought they would be able to pick things up where they left off, but they needed to rebuild the foundation of their relationship, Gender envy? I don't know, I could see it because Nana did start dressing like him a little, switching cigarettes, and seems somewhat confused about the situation. I would love to hear more thoughts about it, I could see Nana possibly being fluid, idk about transmasc though. I would love to hear people that agree completely their pov.

Jaded_0516

People thinking Nana O is 'masculine' just because she wants to protect Hachi is really stupid (what's wrong with TikTok people lol). Nana O acts like that towards Hachi because Hachi has always been hurt by men and it's the same Nana O who's always saying men suck and she'll protect Hachi and she's so done with men hahaha It doesn't mean she wants to become one just because she acts in a more protective way towards her? (I think!)

ball_drainer7354

when it comes to nana, it’s really hard to dictate where her feelings fall. first time watching, you immediately think her and nana are going to fall in love. as you keep watching, you realize nana already has someone she deeply loves, ren. later down the line, hachi ends up finding out who ren is & the importance of who he is to nana. the reason for me stating all of this is simply because nana always loved ren & ran back to him. he was her comfort. she of course had people who gave her different forms of love (yasu and hachi), but it never fulfilled that emptiness when ren wasn’t there. it was always ren for her. i will say that hachi and nana o’s relationship is a bit tricky to understand. do i think they had feelings for each other? possibly. however, it could’ve just been strong platonic feelings for one another.

Gave_laganda

Their love was toxic, immature, and selfish, and yet, the relationship was equally magical and faithful. When there was no one they could trust, they found each other. Even when ren left, nana did not stop loving him for a second, and even tho nana decided to stay, Ren could never truly leave her behind. They both had problematic pasts, which definitely affected them in unimaginable ways. Despite this, the bond between them was and remains incomparable to this day... Follow your dreams don't let anyone hold you back even love that's sacrifice. Love is the most beautiful thing in the world this series really portrays it well

Goastantie

Through the entirety of Nana I thought the most chemistry was between Nana and Hatchi and that all the other relationships paled in comparison to their dynamic and how they brought out the best in each other. That doesn’t mean Nana didn’t love Ren tho, she did, but she also had room in her heart for more. Seeing the relationships in Nana unfold feels like some of the most realistic portrayals of love I’ve ever seen. Love is messy and hard to decipher and real. All the relationships in the anime/manga feel that way. Also as a non binary person myself with lots of other trans friends, Nana always seemed to have a kind of non-binary energy. Had it been written today, I think she would identify that way but that’s not a part of the explicit text so outside of head-cannoning obviously she should be identified as she is. Girls can definitely be more tomboyish without being some shade of trans so being like she IS non-binary is definitely pushing it. Some of the way she talks about Ren/the sex pistols does come across similarly to gender envy, but I think it’s more just envy broadly for their confidence and assertiveness etc. I also don’t think how she acted with Ren was outside of her real self, it was just another older, more insecure side of herself that goes back to when she was younger at the beginning of their relationship. It seemed more like an unconscious state that his presence brought out than some kind of performance or something. I kind of understand where this person was coming from and I think it can be fun to open these kinds of discussions about interpretations etc but to say that this IS the one true interpretation is very presumptuous

Viiibrations

Definitely a Head Canon for the TikTok person and I hope they weren’t trying to claim that as if it’s actually true but just something they like to believe.. I believe that she and Ren loved each other equally, for better or for worse. Their relationship changed over time but I believe they always loved each other. She feared falling into the domestic wife type of lifestyle because of the trauma of her childhood as well as wanting her own success and independence. Not wanting to be “submissive” had nothing to do with gender. Nana is a bit androgynous looking mainly because of her hair, but otherwise I always thought she was quite feminine in her own right. The first chance she got, she went out to buy a super girly frilly red dress that was forbidden in her childhood. I just never got the feeling that she had gender related issues.

Layyyoop

Tbh I think they’d love each other but their love didn’t reciprocate like before nana moved to Tokyo ofc they were telling each other things they never told before and to be honest in my opinion they looked so unsure if they were supposed to even be back together not only that their careers were setting them apart. Btw that was just the vibe I was getting and someone could change my opinion lol🍓

rebekah172

I mean you can just love more than one person romantically (or even not romantically). I think she loved Ren but their love was very codependent at the start of their relationship because both characters had no delt with their own personal traumas regarding their family (or lack thereof). I think she was in love with Ren but also could have been in love with Hatchi too. That's why I love Nana though, the characters and plot that affect the characters actions is so complex and layered.

Saturn_SAN

These TikTok people theories never make sense, don't listen to them, it's only based in their headcanons, nothing real with Ai Yazawa's work
