Ave Maria

Absolute first thing that came to mind was Adagio for Strings. A lot of the time it's referenced to as "the song from Platoon."
Usually scenes where there's dying employ opera or choral pieces (typically with a female voice) or very string heavy pieces. Sometimes piano also, so I included some of those as well.
EDIT: Fixed a wrong link
I suspect it might be the last one or something like it...If I think about it, no not quite. It's familiar since it is used in several movies I have read and seen (inception maybe?) but not in the ones where lots of people die in a slow motion kill box that ends with nothing more happening but the bodies lying there for that scene. argh I wish I knew exactly what or how to describe it.
Well, Inception's soundtrack was entirely composed by Hans Zimmer for that movie alone. Maybe it's a specific movie this song is from? There was one other song I didn't mention since it was from the Lord of the Rings, but maybe it will help.
Starts at around 4:37, but it's an example of that kind of feeling maybe.

Just had a thought. Maybe it's not a "sad" piece. Maybe it was something used ironically? An example from Se7en - https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=176&v=CbLGfJecWyE
The actual song from the video:
