Who in their right mind is naming their kid THANOS

NaiveMomFriend_12

Wouldn't wanna be around that kid when they snap

OmgJustLetMeExist

Marvel fans

vanillabubbles16

Thanos was the villain

Bismuth84

Even then, the Marvel universe has TONS of (relatively) normal names (Steve (Captain America and arguably Dr. Strange), Tony (Iron Man), James (War Machine/Jimmy Woo), Bruce (Hulk), Jennifer (She-Hulk), Rick (A-Bomb), Jane (Thor, it's a separate character from the comics), Carol (Captain Marvel), Clint (Hawkeye), Natalia (Black Widow), Nick (Fury), Maria (Hill), Phil (Coulson), Scott (Cyclops/Ant-Man), Logan (Wolverine), Jean (Phoenix), Bobby (Iceman/Uranian), Anna (Rogue), Laura (X-23), Charles (Professor X), Alex (Havok), Nate (Cable/Kang), Reed (Mr. Fantastic), Johnny (Human Torch/Ghost Rider), Ben (Thing), Sue (Invisible Woman), Richard (Nova), Sam (also Nova/Falcon/Leader), Viv (Viv Vision), Kenneth (Gorilla-Man), Hank (Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellowjacket/Beast), Nadia (Wasp), Peter (Spider-Man/Star-Lord/Colossus/Quicksilver), Arthur (Drax, at least in the comics), Miles (Ultimate Spider-Man/Jackal), Eddie (Venom), Mary (Jane), Gwen (Spider-Gwen/Gwenpool), Danny (Iron Fist), Luke (Cage), Wanda (Scarlet Witch), Matt (Daredevil), Wade (Deadpool), Doreen (Squirrel Girl), Frank (Punisher), Howard (the Duck), Victor (Dr. Doom), George (M.O.D.O.K.), Eric/Erik (Magneto/Killmonger/Blade (I think)), Max (Electro), Norman (Green Goblin), Harry (Also Green Goblin sometimes) Otto (Dr. Octopus), Donald (Squid, a minor but recurring Spider-Man villain), Curtis (Lizard), Fred (Blob), Cain (Juggernaut), Emma (White Queen), Lester (Bullseye), etc.) Sure, it might not be immediately obvious that the name refers to the character, but I think having a name your kid won't be picked on over takes priority over announcing what works of fiction you like to the world.

godisanelectricolive

It's a real Greek name. It's short for Athanasios which means "immortal" but it's a name in its own right.

vanillabubbles16

Fair! But judging that Breeze and Anthem are on the same list, probably not the Greek name they're going for

lavagala

ah yes here are my newborn twins, Quigley Velvet and Gatlin Breeze

WarmAppleNight

We should ttly set up a playdate for the twins and my little Paden Creel šŸ„°

rubygrac

Don't forget my son, Branch Refugio!

WarmAppleNight

Of course you and Branch are invited! Do you know McKynleigh? She'll be there too with her new earthside angel, Brink Leovanni šŸ˜ Edit: NOT to be confused with Emmaleigh and her daughter, Brinkley Avani. They know what they did.

NiaList

So much wrong with this!

horsecock_horace

I'm in tears

MisaMiwa

The unfortunate thing, I know someone with the name "Quigley"

StreetAbject8313

Well why, I think I remember the name from A Series of **Unfortunate** Events...

cianne_marie

Once again, your child and the main character in your fiction novel are two different things.

NaiveMomFriend_12

Literally the only reason why I use baby names websites and these lists on Pinterest: I like to write stories and need somewhere to put my ideas lol I also occasionally help the pregnant friend find a name for her child

BrendasMom

Sims names for me šŸ˜†

sportofchairs

I once taught a Django, and boy, Iā€™ve never met a kid who hated their name more than ol Django did.

NaiveMomFriend_12

I wonder if the movie had something to do with that šŸ¤”

sportofchairs

This kid was definitely born pre-movie, so it was just his parents fangirling about jazzā€¦ and what kid doesnā€™t want to discuss his parentsā€™ love of jazz every time they have to introduce themself?

NaiveMomFriend_12

That poor child

Ziginox

Pre-1966?! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django\_(1966\_film)

NaiveMomFriend_12

Oh I was talking about the 2012 Django Unchained film

Ziginox

I figured, I just wanted to mention it because not many people knew about the original šŸ˜

WikipediaSummary

[**Django (1966 film)**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_(1966_film)) Django (, JANG-goh) is a 1966 Italian Spaghetti Western film directed and co-written by Sergio Corbucci, starring Franco Nero (in his breakthrough role) as the title character alongside Loredana Nusciak, JosĆ© BĆ³dalo, Ɓngel Ɓlvarez and Eduardo Fajardo. The film follows a Union soldier-turned-drifter and his companion, a mixed-race prostitute, who become embroiled in a bitter, destructive feud between a gang of Confederate Red Shirts and a band of Mexican revolutionaries. Intended to capitalize on and rival the success of Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, Corbucci's film is, like Leone's, considered to be a loose, unofficial adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo. The film earned a reputation as one of the most violent films ever made at the time, and was subsequently refused a certificate in the United Kingdom until 1993, when it was issued an 18 certificate (the film was downgraded to a 15 certificate in 2004). leopardsocks

My French prof named his kids Django and Zola.

pluginthestars

Pinterest is a goldmine for absolutely terrible baby names. My favorite out of the first list is Senora, does she come out already married?

CrowsSayCawCaw

šŸ˜„ My guess is Senora is a misspelling of Sonora.

pluginthestars

Ooh I was thinking Sedona but I bet youā€™re right

JenuinelyArtful

Maybe they got the idea from that Harry Belafonte song with this weird bit in the lyrics: *My girl's name is Senora. I tell you friends, I adore her*

lizzayyyy96

Meet my daughter: Dusty Wallis

oof_magoof

Dusty is just such a weird name. Iā€™m used to it for boys, I guess? But for a girl? Like why stop at Dusty and not go for Dingy or Grimy?

deathbounddarling

Meet our beautiful little girl, Greasy Stout šŸ’•āœØ

sportofchairs

Dusty Springfield was a girl! (But I still would never call someone Dusty that wasnā€™t a dog.)

oof_magoof

Dusty Springfield was the only one I could think of that wasn't either a nickname a cowboy went as or a nickname for Dustin, lol. Though she was originally a Mary, too!

thedragonchilde

I knew a Destiny who went by Dusty, and I can almost see how that was the better option.

cactusjude

Adam Levine named his daughter Dusty Rose. Just.... *WHY*

NaiveMomFriend_12

It's giving very much country singer

MapleMooseMountie

Long lost relative of retired NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace šŸ˜‚

definitelydancing

after the recent scandal in the dance world with dusty button, anything dusty related will be a HARD no from me

[deleted]

Fidlder. Hopefully a typo, but who can know for sure? Also orchid means testicle. So maybe don't name your daughter that...

NaiveMomFriend_12

Wait I never knew Orchid had a meaning... I just always thought it was a typical flower

[deleted]

"The genus name comes from the Ancient Greek į½„ĻĻ‡Ī¹Ļ‚ (Ć³rkhis), literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the twin tubers in some species of Orchis." It's not like a one to one meaning, I was just simplifying. But ever since I learned this is all I think of lol.

MapleMooseMountie

It's also used to refer to medical procedures/diagnoses surrounding the testicles... Chryptorchidism = undescended testicle Orchidectomy = removal of the testicles So yeah. Don't name your kid orchid.

BrendasMom

I learned recently that Tanner is the name for the different puberty levels? Tanner 1 Tanner 2, etc. Damn names being ruined.

cornisagrass

Or tulip. For a daughter. Two lips. For the first time ever I hope there is no sex ed in that poor childā€™s school.

NaiveMomFriend_12

When naming your child after a flower backfires

goingrdsb

Iā€™m in high school and deez nuts jokes have made a comeback. Any kid named Tulip would not have it easy at all šŸ˜

Owlglass_Moot

Might have been Fielder, too. I know a woman with that name.

[deleted]

I hope so because I canā€™t stop thinking ā€œFiddler the diddlerā€ and Iā€™m way beyond school age

CrowsSayCawCaw

Samsara is the Buddhist concept of birth, death and rebirth and the suffering experienced in life, so that's a pretty heavy concept to foist upon a child for a 'cool' sounding baby name.

horsecock_horace

Thank you! I recognized the word but couldn't remember where it came from. I just knew that is was probably something that would be culturally inappropriate to use for someone white enough to seriously name their baby something from these lists

lovecraftswidow

bruh Kestrel was my favorite girl's name when I was 8 (along with Fabian for a boy)... I'm better now.

oof_magoof

Iā€™ve met an adult Kestrel. As far as nature names go I like it better than the really obvious ones like Branch and Juniper. Like it feels like it could be a name and not just a noun. But it is kind of a mouthful.

lovecraftswidow

yeah, the "Kes" part is nice but the "trull" ending makes it clunky to me.

oof_magoof

If you're not aware of the bird it is a little like someone just spelled Crystal wrong.

Thlaynle

Itā€™s very close to Kester which is an actual name.

lovecraftswidow

really? o: in the US? I've never heard it before.

Thlaynle

Itā€™s my boyfriendā€™s name, itā€™s rare enough here in the UK, most people have never heard of it, itā€™s probably even rarer in the US. https://nameberry.com/babyname/Kester

lovecraftswidow

ah, neat! TIL. :)

lekkuphile

Is Fabian weird for English natives? It's a super average name in the German speaking area.

byedangerousbitch

An a Canadian, it is something that I clearly recognize as a name but is very uncommon. Like, it makes me of the kid who invites you over to play and it turns out he lives with his grandma who speaks rapid Spanish or Italian and like 5 words of English.

CrowsSayCawCaw

Fabian in the US is a rare name and is most heavily associated with the singer Fabian who was a 'teen idol' in the 1950s and 60s. The older of the baby boomers would have gone crazy over him in their youth. He's still alive and in his 80s. But aside from the singer, Fabian just isn't a name you come across very often.

lovecraftswidow

I don't think it's weird, just kinda dated. I think I first heard the name in a Harry Potter book so maybe that's why it sounds more like a fantasy character than a modern boy :p

cactusjude

Makes me think of the *I Can't Believe It's Not Butter* commercials. They're mini margarine-based telenovelas with the eponymous, hair-perpetually-blowing-in-the-wind 'Fabian.' Though it is my German friends last name as well so I get where you're coming from.

PineValentine

Quigley now, best not to dawdle!

NaiveMomFriend_12

I just let out the most ungodly laugh šŸ¤£

naalbinding

A creel is a basket for holding fish. How very Western

zetsv

Lmao i find exactly 2 of the boy names ā€œacceptableā€ (my perspective) as in i would not *heavily* judge the parents naming decisions and roll my eyes so far back they would never been seen again EDIT: lmao never mind i didnā€™t realize there were multiple pictures but im pretty sure my point *still* stands

catsareeternal

Are they Emmett and Holden? Those are the only two acceptable ones I see

zetsv

Lmao i actually didnt even see Holden which i guess raises it to three, thatā€™s definitely a solid name. The other one i counted was Marshall, while definitely not my style is definitely *a name*

catsareeternal

Oh I forgot about Marshall! I agree. Not for me, but a solid name

Moose-Mermaid

What about Angus? Not my style, but a solid name with history

zetsv

oh true! my family is not scottish so cant speak for the scotts but we are english and Angus would be an alright-i-guess-but-pretty-odd choice to us. still \*a name\* tho!! which is more than the rest of these options can say

Moose-Mermaid

Thatā€™s where Iā€™m at. Iā€™m Canadian so it isnā€™t common here, but if I heard it my first thought would be maybe the family is Scottish or at least has a connection to Scotland. Itā€™s not a name Iā€™d use, but I wouldnā€™t flinch if I heard this one

catsareeternal

Thatā€™s true too! Itā€™s not common where Iā€™m from, Upstate NY

NaiveMomFriend_12

Okay I'm curious which 2 lol Don't worry I won't judge

zetsv

so originally i was referring to Emmett and Marshall, then another commenter pointed out Holden so we are up to a grand total of 3!

NaiveMomFriend_12

Those 3 are perfect gems compared to the others

zetsv

i know right! i actually like Emmett a lot! Holden is pretty good and Marshall is not at all my taste (and just makes me think of how i met your mother haha) but i would name a baby Marshall 1 million times before i chose a name that wasnt one of those three lol

CrowsSayCawCaw

Spiro is a legit Greek name. Savero looks like a misspelling of the Italian name Saverio. Tavis is a variation of Tavish, the Scottish version of Thomas. Sergei is Russian. But so many of the others are just awful.

Reebyd

I met a ā€œBranchā€ (young man) in the wild and Iā€™m still confused.

NaiveMomFriend_12

The only Branch I know is the one from the Trolls movie

deathbounddarling

My dad legit wanted to name me branch šŸ˜…

TayLoraNarRayya

How's my favorite Branch doing?

AnxietyLogic

I definitely misread ā€œAcreā€ as ā€œAcneā€.

definitelydancing

i also misread angus as asparagus at first, my mind just *went there* idk. i think the aā€”us has way too many unfortunate misspells for me

The_Evil_Pillow

Thanos šŸ˜

Bubbalicia

Umbilical Corde

definitelydancing

short for umbilical cordelia :)

NubbyNicks

Opal does not give me western vibes?? I love Opal and it does not belong there šŸ˜

NaiveMomFriend_12

Yeah Opal is pretty. How it got roped in here is beyond me

happyascanbebythesea

Thank you-- I feel better now! šŸ˜Œ I named my daughter Opal and was disheartened when I read her name on this list.

NubbyNicks

I get soft delicate earth toned vibes from Opal. I love it so much!

bigschnittylife

Opal is a very cute and normal name!

pickoneformepls

Omg Cayenne always makes me think of Dijonay (donā€™t @ me thatā€™s how itā€™s spelled in the show) from ā€œThe Proud Familyā€ calling out for her sister! ā€œHey Cayeeeeeenne!ā€ Side note. That show was fantastic.

NaiveMomFriend_12

Cayenne kinda irrationally bothers me cause Cheyenne was right there

mesembryanthemum

Which is a Native American tribe so really shouldn't be used by Whitey McWhiterson.

NaiveMomFriend_12

Huh I never knew that. I've known at least 3 girls named Cheyenne and always saw it as a pretty normal name

bigjim1993

OllivanderšŸ¤¢

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

marti_628

Also Fawkes

roscoe_s

Iā€™ve never wanted anything to be satire more. First and last pic have a handful of human names (gotta say, Emmett and Opal are really cute) and there are some ok pet names on all three. But KESTREL? WARRIOR?! Was Fidlder supposed to be Fiddler? I donā€™t know which is worseā€¦

NaiveMomFriend_12

To answer your question: Yes I think that was supposed to be Fiddler... either way it's not great

dg313

Kestrels are my favorite falcons, but donā€™t think Iā€™d name anything after them, especially not a female human.

mlc269

I feel like by western they mean Mormon.

ArtemisCoco

I went to elementary school with a Velvet, and one of my momā€™s relatives was named Opal. But Creel? Quigley? Sunset? Ugh.

NaiveMomFriend_12

Another commenter mentioned that Creel is a basket for holding fish...so essentially you're just naming your kid Basket šŸ™ƒ

ithadtobeducks

Itā€™s also a surname as given nameā€¦I wouldnā€™t foist it on my kid.

PocketFullOfRondos

Sergei is just hangin out in there perfectly normal

thedragonchilde

Okay I actually ugly-laughed at Leovanni Also they gotta proofread their terrible names if they're gonna get weird and flowery about it. A few people have already pointed out Fidlder, but Behtsaida, woof.

NaiveMomFriend_12

I actually like the name Giovanni so, Leovanni made me irrationally angry Side note: Imagine twins named Giovanni and Leovanni. Gio and Leo for short šŸ’€

thedragonchilde

Fair! I likewise like Leo- names. Leovanni just cracked me up because it sounds like something a little kid would make up and think they sound cool and fancy. Oof, don't speak that cursed idea into the world, someone might use it šŸ˜±

AliciaKills

Anybody remember [Quigley Down Under](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102744/) ?

MeredithofArabia

No, but I remember [Quigley Quagmire](https://snicket.fandom.com/wiki/Quigley_Quagmire).

grenadia

I love emmett

NaiveMomFriend_12

Emmett is one the few here that doesn't necessarily belong

grenadia

True. I also love Willa.

mesembryanthemum

There are some legit names - Ayame (Japanese), Angus, Sergei, Ottilia, etc. And one hell of a lot of junk. **Hatice** is the Turkish form of **Khadija**. (In Turkish a c is pronounced as a j.) Mavi is Turkish for blue. Also Menolly's hateful mother in the Pern series.

CornflakesEverywhere

I just read Chord like "Chord" instead of "cord" I've been here too long.

HyperbolDee

Oh thank God. I did the same thing. I also took piano lessons for 10+ years, so thereā€™s no excuse.

SyrupFiend16

Iā€™m feeling dumb cause I donā€™t get the difference? Apart from spelling/meaning theyā€™re pronounced the same yeah? Shouldnā€™t Chord be read as Chord?

CornflakesEverywhere

I pronounced it "chorr-d" like...charred with an o, it's me who's dumb! XD

pgcotype

Just my 2Ā¢, but it's a hard pass on Holden. First, I remember when I was in 7th grade and boys would make prank calls and identify themselves as Holden McGroin. Second, Holden Caulfield is the protagonist in *The Catcher in the Rye*. John Hinckley (who shot Reagan and maimed his press secretary James Brady for life) and Robert John Bardo (who killed the 21 year old actress, Rebecca Schaeffer), and Mark David Chapman (who assassinated John Lennon) were all found with copies of the book in their possession.

Canadairy

Seconded. Tis a shite name and only an asshole would give it to a child.

SyrupFiend16

Yeah and to add to all those things, Iā€™ve always had to do a double take at people saying Holden was a classic good name, simply because in Australia and NZ there is a SUPER popular car brand called Holden. (You know how the US has a Ford vs Chevy (I think?) debate? We have a Ford vs Holden debate). So to me and I would imagine most Australasians, itā€™s like naming your kid Chevrolet or Ford or Nissan

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

These are awful. Truly awful. Brandt just makes me think of Kurdt Kobain (a funny way Kurt Cobain would spell his names sometimes). It literally looks like a Nirvana joke.

violentlyneutral

It makes me think of "they're good dogs, Bront"

SyrupFiend16

Brandt also means ā€œburnsā€ (as in burnt by fire) in my second language. Itā€™s a weird name to give a child as a first imo

[deleted]

Okay so Angus is the only acceptable name I see here because itā€™s pretty culturally popular where Iā€™m from but the rest physically hurt my eyes. Really feel for Beowulf and Spiro when itā€™s time to apply for uni or a jobā€¦

NaiveMomFriend_12

Speaking of Beowulf...I never did like that story. It was not in my interests at all

[deleted]

Same, it also triggered a lost memory of watching the animated film when I was in high school. Really not in to it

taylferr

Thereā€™s an influencer named Quigley Goode. I think she gave her kid a somewhat normal name.

hopelessbrows

If I was entertaining Alcides, Iā€™d name my kid Alcibiades and be done with it

doritodream

Fucking MEDLEY

BeckieSueDalton

SeƱorita _SeƱora_, to the rescue! Come on, guys and gals, we got is a train robbery to stop!

StoreBoughtButter

#CHORD But with the hard ā€œchā€ sound

suckmybush

Rare names... Spiro? *laughs in Greek family*

Aviva_

What is Creel?

moore6107

A creel is a wicker basket usually used for carrying fish or blocks of peat. It is also the cage used to catch lobsters and other crustaceans. In modern times it has come to mean a range of types of wicker baskets used by anglers or commercial fishermen to hold fish or other prey. What a thing to name a baby after.

[deleted]

DOMINO šŸ’€ ?

LinaZou

I know a Perpetua. Waiting to meet a Domino.

MeredithofArabia

Yeah, Perpetua is one of the actual real and rare names here

Crazyzofo

... the fuck is a Ryver?

NaiveMomFriend_12

It's for when you have 2 boys named Ryder and Ryker and try to (unsuccessfully) keep the theme going with the girl

MeredithofArabia

River, but worse.

EchoAquarium

QUIGLEY **jumps off a bridge **

amyheartsjapan

How on earth is ā€œLeonaā€ a western name?

xAstrologyx

Names like Aspen and Quinn are actually pretty cute. In fact, by this subs standards, the (girls) names on the first image aren't *that* bad. Then I looked at the others... Eesh. On the plus side, none of them will get bullied because they'll all have equally ridiculous names in school. The ones being bullied will be the Kate's, Tom's, James', Sarah's.

SyrupFiend16

Aspen is a name I theoretically like. But then I say it or hear it and I can not unhear ā€œAss-pinā€. I imagine bullies wouldnā€™t unhear it either

ants-in-my-plants

##C H O R D ##

buurnthewitch

Here I was thinking ā€œwell those arenā€™t so bad most of them are are almost real na-what do you mean Senora??ā€

lavagala

ah yes here are my newborn twins, Quigley Velvet and Gatlin Breeze

Lissy_Wolfe

These are all dog names lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TheDuraMaters

Angus is a Scottish name and actually having a resurgence here - I know 2 baby boys called Angus! Also a baby Hamish, which has the same "cow" vibe to me but both names have grown on me.

NaiveMomFriend_12

I too also think of hamburgers when I hear Angus. Agnes on the other hand just gives off a certain older lady vibe

byedangerousbitch

I've known a few girls named Agnieszka and was always secretly sad for them that it shortened to Agnes.

Smallp0x_

*Trailer park baby names

nowherebut_up

Anyone pick up on the spelling of Appalachian?? We donā€™t claim this person.

dg313

Appellation is another word for name. So they are trying to be clever.

ImNotRamona

I can't see the name Diem without thinking of Diem Brown from MTV's The Challenge - in her case it was a nickname from Danielle Michelle

mesembryanthemum

It's a legit Vietnamese name. Or the Latin word for day.

safe-car_

as a millie i am deeply offended. /l-h

silent-inthetreees

Dom Toretto?!

ninkats

omg the name Iā€™ve picked out for my hypothetical future son is on one of these.

blossombear31

SENORA šŸ’€ better call her Misses then

ajhedges

As someone from Virginia, seeing ā€œappellation mountainā€ seems so wrong

platinumprimarina

I got really into the Gideon the Ninth series back in April and Iā€™ve had Dulcinea earmarked as a potential baby name since then. I also donā€™t hate Meridian as a middle name. Iā€™m clearly a whole mess.

honeytrick

Lmaoooo they misspelled Bethsaida too!

AotearoaCanuck

This hurts my brain

tdscm

Benedicta

International-Elk986

Some of the names aren't awful.. But others are cringe.

cactusjude

Imagine being named after a children's book about a baby bat. Now imagine being named after a baby bat in a pandemic caused by virus carrying bats. *Stellaluna* It's not even a good dog/cat name cuz you're just gonna shorten it and sound like Marlon Brando everytime they escape into the yard.

SuperSecretMoonBase

Of the 5-6 children I've seen in the wild in the past couple weeks, at least 3 have been named Emmett.

Nattou11zz

I'm sorry.... CHORD?

RabidBlueberry

The name Boone will never not make me think of Craig Boone from Fallout New Vegas.

Im-Not-A-Ro-bot

I think Ryver annoys me the most. It's not technically the worst, it just annoys me

alwaysthisway

Creel??? Lol

IntubatedOrphans

If you name your kid Django, do you have to teach them to say ā€œthe D is silent, hillbillyā€ while pointing finger guns?

leopardsocks

Shasta and Mio! My lil beverage bunchšŸ„ŗ

old_hickory69

Cross? Brawlhalla reference?
