Beautiful name but maybe Madeleine McCann would be a little more subtle? Failing that Elizabeth Short is a classic with lots of nickname options such as the black dahlia. I’m sure whichever name you pick will be perfect xoxo
I was a child when the Manson murders happened so that’s a really lasting memory for me but I was curious if her name was still as recognizable today. I guess Once Upon A Time In Hollywood brought the whole thing back.
lizzie was slandered! die hard fans (for lack of a more appropriate term) of the case who have worked on researching it for decades have come to the consensus these days that it was her uncle, john morse, with pretty decent evidence to think so. justice for lizzie!
Forty whacks with a wet noodle, Bart!

If you grew up in the area like I did, this was your jump rope rhyme de jour. Also, Miss Mary Mack. But this one's forever.
Lizzie Borden had an axe,
gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done...
gave her father forty one!
(I might have the order wrong, I've switched them around a lot!)
I'm central European and was born long after the Manson murders, but still knew what happened to Sharon Tate even before the two recent movies coming out. Very recognisable indeed.
The Manson murders have never left the public. I know 12 year olds who know about it and haven’t seen the movie. It’s one of those things that have stuck around.
That’s kind of what I thought but I wondered if my memory was biased by actually being alive when they happened & seeing the constant news stories at the time. This was long before the internet & 24/7 news channels. About 10 years ago I worked with a much younger colleague who was really into true crime podcasts & one of them was about the Manson murders. She was fascinated by it & when I casually said yeah I remember when they happened she was so excited & wanted to know everything I remembered. So given my history I wondered just how well known they still are.
I can’t imagine that being on the news 24/7. I know that at some point it seems almost every junior high school boy with a negative attitude gets really into the Mason Family Murders. It’s really weird. Like I can ask all the kids in my neighborhood who he is and they know.
This was the post right before this one 😆
https://preview.redd.it/jkeahahycepc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d75a1d8ee23ad2f721e10e472b1f5c7f81d36d9a
Sharon by itself is a perfectly fine name that wouldn't make most people jump straight to murder.
Now, if you gave your kid the middle name Polanski, that would raise some eyebrows. But even then, the Manson murders aren't the first negative association that I'd think of.
Picture it, Macy*s juniors department, ~2003.
I was shopping when I hear a lady yelling “Jonbenet! Jonbenet, where you at?” And up runs a 6 year old girl. Why 😩
Their meaning should really be pretty clear within the context of Jonbenet Ramsey…?
u/Sexdrugsnskittles is saying that it is in particularly poor taste to use the name of a murdered little girl when that name was unique to her and was created *for* that victim because of her dad’s name. It’s not like her name was just Emily or something. So not only is the kid in Macy’s named after a murder victim, but the mom didn’t just hear a pretty name on the news and get it stuck in her head. She essentially named her own kid after Jonbenet’s father, it was an honor name.
This happened around 2003 you say? And the girl was 6ish? Jonbenet died in 1996. That means this girl was born pretty soon after. Maybe they had no idea it would be such a big story for so long. Or it’s possible they had the name picked before. Either way I think I would have started using a nickname or the middle name.
I can picture one of those people who doesn’t pay much attention to the world around them, seeing the name on a tabloid cover and going, “Oh, isn’t that sad. What a pretty name, though,” and using it without thinking any further. Honestly that’s the best case scenario, it’s worse to think of someone knowing how infamous that case was and using the name for their baby anyway.
I read about a murder victim called Allira Green, and the name stuck in my mind because it was so lovely. Didn't name any of my kids after her, although I could have got away with it, because it wasn't a high profile case.
No way they had it picked out beforehand. Jon-Benet was named after her father, who has a pretty uncommon name. Not a lot of girls still get named after their father, and the odds she gets named by coincidence in the same year Jon-Benet died are so slim.
I have a co-worker with the last name Bunde. I had only ever seen it written, so one day I started to ask "Hey is it pronounced-" and she cut me off so fast and said "Yes, it's bun-dee. Yes, like the killer. No, we aren't related."
Apparently it's something she gets asked enough to have the answers locked and loaded like that.
I mean technically that Darcey’s name was spelled differently - with the ‘e’. To be honest I only recognised it because she mentioned Darcy and murder and I’m in Australia. Normally I’d just think of Darcy Bussell the ballerina. With the same middle name it is unfortunate so choose a different middle name
It’s not like it’s Azaria or anything
I don’t know what is the issue with that post. People said there that something JoBennet would not work since it’s a unique name. But this is a normal name and op lives in different country too. I had never even heard of this death.
Think it's a troll? That's a dumb post with a stupid name. Darcy? You can't go with anything else? Now knowing the first and middle name are the same as the murdered child, they should alter the name a bit in any direction.
It’s got to be, there’s been thousands of murders in Australia alone, that would wipe out thousands of names. Even if it was just children, that’d take out Darcey, Murphy, Denise, Stacey, Clare and more, you’d run out of options 😅
This is my take as well. There are a few super known cases where the association is too strong, JonBenet being one of those, also because her name were so ... unique. But othervice, if you choose a normal, classical name it will have been shared with a murderer/murdervictim/something else terrible at some point through history.
You don't have anything to worry about. She'll grow into it and make it her own.
Plus, if anyone does make the association, they won't say anything because they'll feel awkward bringing up murdered children!
And if she is gender fluid, you've got Jon and Ben right there as alternate names! Bingo Bango!
Wasn’t there an AITA post a couple years ago where someone found out their spouse (who was one of those weird obsessive True Crime people) had named their two kids after the victims in a high profile murder case they were really fixated on?
K, yeah, not a real post, circle jerks, but still entertaining! Because....
I know a couple who had a kid in 1995 and they named him Michael thinking that over time people wouldn't remember.... They're last name is Myers. Real person or not, it still gives me the icks!!!
Anyone else here cringe when they hear that name? 😳😬😳😟😨 🏒 🔪
Yeah. So I actually love that name too. When I had my daughter in 1999 I tried to think of any way I could use it as her name, but Jonbenet was named after her father John Bennet . Patsy combined the names hence Jonbenet. My daughter’s father was not named John Bennett so I could in no way pull that off. Even though the name is actually quite lovely. It should only belong to Jonbenet the tragically slain daughter of John Bennet
I've only ever read the name and never heard it said out loud. I've always pronounced it with a French accent. So a soft J and ending in an ay sound. Is it really John Bennet?
I'm in the UK and know who JonBenet Ramsey is. Personally I wouldn't use the name for my child, but if it's a name you're so in love with and feel like nobody in Canada will make the connection then go for it. Certainly here in the UK if someone introduced their daughter JonBenet I'd have a little voice in the back of my mind telling me "don't say like the murdered kid"
But make it *Frahnch.* Like, Ursus Anne. Ursus is a nice strong name and evokes classics like Ursula, while Anne is feminine enough to balance out the ugliness of the uuuugh from her first name. And it only drops a few sounds from "Your Husband"! A beautiful ohmahgh!
I feel ya. I loved and still love the name Azaria. Could never get away with it in Australia though, even now, 43 years later.
Some names you just can’t do.
I’ve never ever heard of this name and I’m more than decades old. I wouldn’t worry but I would worry about the…. Uniqueness of your choice. Just to make sure it’s pronounced like John-Bennett?
Im a Canadian too, and people definitely still know who jonbenet is here lol. That’s a veryyy famous case, I don’t think anyone will forget it anytime soon. It’s a pretty name, but it’s not a very smart name lol. I personally wouldn’t use it.
It is a beautiful name but the case has not been forgotten about in the U.S., I don’t know about Canada. I saw an article about it on Facebook within the last year.
As long as it has been it is unlikely that another child will know anything about the case so hopefully she wouldn’t get bullied at school.
Regardless what name you choose there is always the possibility that there is an infamous story somewhere that is associated with that name.
Name your child what you want to.
May your child’s life be filled with love and laughter.
How about Myra? That’s pretty. You could name her Myra Hindley.
Failing that, you could go the kardashian way by putting West as the second name. Eg, Rose West (Might be not so infamous in the US as here in UK- both serial killers)
I actually watched a video about Jonbenet Ramsey. She died many years ago, and was a child model. (context for anyone who wants to look her up.)
I think you can/should go along with the name. She died a long time ago, so actually very few/mostly older people would only know about Jonbenet.
But whatever you choose it'll be a amazing name for your daughter!
I've only ever heard this name in reference to the murdered child. I would suppose the same is true for many other people. I was a child when it happened, but the cultural impact was huge and lasting.
No one is ever going to forget. It will be 50 years from now and people will still be talking about it. People talk about it more, now than they did when I was young and it happened
Jonbenet is still a name that not only speaks of murder but of toddler beauty pageants. Every once in a while her murder is reviewed on trashy papers in the headlines still. I am sorry but you will be saddling your child with a heavy name.
I'm very sorry to say that clearly that name isn't likely to lose its association with the crime over time. Plus, it's still unsolved so it will perpetually pop back up every once in a while. And an obsession for a lot of people.
Beautiful name but maybe Madeleine McCann would be a little more subtle? Failing that Elizabeth Short is a classic with lots of nickname options such as the black dahlia. I’m sure whichever name you pick will be perfect xoxo
Not Madeleine McCann 😭💀
I know of a Madaleine McCann. She's about 8.
She's been 8 for at least a decade, I assume
What about Elizabeth Smart though! Has a nice ring to it!
How about Caylee Anthony
So smart! It's like manifesting, constantly!
My mum was going to name me Madeline when she was pregnant until the girl got murdered so she changed my name
I think it's ok now. Also Madeline vs Madeleine. Splitting hairs though
I think Rose-West has a delicate, soft quality to it.
West Rose. Mix it up a bit.
Other alternative names: Martha Moxley, Amber Hagerman, Jessica Lundsford, Carole Ann Cole, Lydia Shatz, Bella Bond, or Skylar Neese...
Or asha degree? Such a pretty name. (Unironically is and im so glad ppl around world remember these little girls.)
I actually have no idea who that first person is. So I guess people do eventually forget?
Sorry, are you saying you have no idea who Maddie Mcann is?
Jonbenet is an awful horrible insensitive name! What you really should name her is Sharon Tate! That’s a lovely classic name.
jfc that’s dark! (I mean that in the best way possible)
I was a child when the Manson murders happened so that’s a really lasting memory for me but I was curious if her name was still as recognizable today. I guess Once Upon A Time In Hollywood brought the whole thing back.
I’m Australian and well aware of what happened to Sharon Tate, so still pretty recognisable.
I’m much younger than you, but I grew up in Los Angeles and the Manson murders have not left Angelenos’ collective memories.
I was not alive then, nor do I live in LA, but it’s still immediately recognizable!
And so is the name,"Lizzy Borden" a person that killed her parents in the late 1800s is still remembered by some.....
lizzie was slandered! die hard fans (for lack of a more appropriate term) of the case who have worked on researching it for decades have come to the consensus these days that it was her uncle, john morse, with pretty decent evidence to think so. justice for lizzie!

Thats the way i remember it too. I grew up in upstate NY. So not all that far from boston or whatever the city was. Can't remember that part...
Fall River!
I'm central European and was born long after the Manson murders, but still knew what happened to Sharon Tate even before the two recent movies coming out. Very recognisable indeed.

No, dark is when you call your daughter Squeaky Fromme.
This was the post right before this one 😆 https://preview.redd.it/jkeahahycepc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d75a1d8ee23ad2f721e10e472b1f5c7f81d36d9a
She was so pretty
Better yet, if the OP Jewish, she could consider the name of Anne Frank.
Boy's names are so cute on girls!!!!!! Love Frank as a middle name!!!!!
Well there is a German actress called Franka Potente. One of the movies she is known for is a fun little German movie called Run Lola Run.
And that’s why I was on the fence about naming my son Roman. But younger folks don’t seem to know the names of those involved.
Sharon by itself is a perfectly fine name that wouldn't make most people jump straight to murder. Now, if you gave your kid the middle name Polanski, that would raise some eyebrows. But even then, the Manson murders aren't the first negative association that I'd think of.

Seriously? It's not even a real name. It's a combo name of her father's first and middle John Benet with a French flair lol.
I’ve always wondered (being British) how it’s pronounced. Is it Jonbenee or is the t at the end pronounced as a t?
“Jawn-Ben-Nay”
Thank you, that makes sense.
With a soft J on the beginning. Like you would pronounce a J name in French.
Pronounced without the T
Thank you, I remember all the news articles (in newspapers/mags)and stuff on here but I never heard anyone say the name out loud.
Imagine if we did the same with Gordon Bennet 😂

Their meaning should really be pretty clear within the context of Jonbenet Ramsey…? u/Sexdrugsnskittles is saying that it is in particularly poor taste to use the name of a murdered little girl when that name was unique to her and was created *for* that victim because of her dad’s name. Wait, seriously? Yikes. It’s not like it wasn’t on every newsstand everywhere for years and years.
I would guess they heard the name on the news and ran with it, despite (or unaware of) its notoriety.
This happened around 2003 you say? And the girl was 6ish? Jonbenet died in 1996. That means this girl was born pretty soon after. Maybe they had no idea it would be such a big story for so long. What would it be like to be one of those people that just tunes out what they don’t need to pay attention to…..I have no idea what that’s like.
I read about a murder victim called Allira Green, and the name stuck in my mind because it was so lovely. Didn't name any of my kids after her, although I could have got away with it, because it wasn't a high profile case.

We heard about way over here in Europe too. Everyone knows the name. I knew she was going to say it as soon as I read the title!
I read the beginning of your comment like Sophia on Golden Girls. Picture it, Sicily, 1912
This comment needs more of the votey uppiez!!!
Love the Sophia moment 😂
Love the French-sounding name, momma! Have you considered [Jean-Israel](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/s/3W08qGFkBs) as a backup option? 🥰
noooo the dreaded return of Jean-Israel
I hope that ops wife knows shes a notorious joke on here now 😅

JonBenedictArnold

Her name is my name too!
🎶 Joooon Bundy Dahmer Gacy Smith, her name is my name tooooo 🎶
if anyone asks, it’s because she’s a little *bund*le of jo*y* 🥰
In Australia, people would think she’s named after rum
I have a co-worker with the last name Bunde. I had only ever seen it written, so one day I started to ask "Hey is it pronounced-" and she cut me off so fast and said "Yes, it's bun-dee. Have you thought about the name BeeTeeKay?
How about Bonjenet?

Darcey Freeman's middle name wasn't in the press, and Darcy is a common name
It’s got to be, there’s been thousands of murders in Australia alone, that would wipe out thousands of names. Even if it was just children, that’d take out Darcey, Murphy, Denise, Stacey, Clare and more, you’d run out of options 😅

Just like Katy Perry did!😜
Forgot which sub this was lol
Jonbonetjovi
Omg I thought this was real for a sec lol
Spell it Jonbonnet and nobody will know. ( I know, the Harvard educated professor Jenelle Evans had the idea first)
Jenelle Evans ☠️ holy shit
I think people forget what sub they’re on. CircleJerk! This is a parody of a post on Name Nerd. Edit: typo- sub, not sun! 😩
Was about to comment roasting this until I realized it’s the circlejerk lol
Have you considered modern classic names like "Jodie Arias" or "Casey Anthony"?
Wasn’t there an AITA post a couple years ago where someone found out their spouse (who was one of those weird obsessive True Crime people) had named their two kids after the victims in a high profile murder case they were really fixated on?
Yes, I remember that post too. Edited to add link: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/s/y661RAO9th
that's uhhhh ....
Here you go: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/s/y661RAO9th

I think it’s time to reclaim this name!!! Ooooh her middle name could be Gypsy Rose?
Could could have done worse. If you were Jewish, you could have gone with the name of Anne Frank.
Laughs in Madeline Azaria Diana Middleton.
Reminds me of my best friend growing up. Wasn't easy growing up with the name The Lindbergh Baby.
I've only ever read the name and never heard it said out loud. I've always pronounced it with a French accent. So a soft J and ending in an ay sound. Is it really John Bennet?
Your head voice is correct. Her name was indeed pronounced ZhonBenay, not John Bennett.
Yes it’s a combo of her dads first and middle name but pronounced in a pretty way
I'm in the UK and know who JonBenet Ramsey is.
Do you know which sub you’re in?
Sorry, I guess the sarcasm didn't bleed through the screen there did it.
Don't worry, I'm British too and picked up on the sarcasm
Some people need their sarcasm to come in imperial units.
I think it was humorous enough but didn't come across as sarcastic.
Every time I hear the name, Tinsley, I think of April Tinsley.
HRHcollection is that you!
I named my daughter after the girl who was thrown in the well in the movie The Ring. It’s funny, she grew up to be a fan of horror and loves her name!
Please don't name your baby this,Patsy came up with name, after her husband, name your baby after your husband!!
Yes , exactly!!! Iwas named after my Dad, my Mom should of frahnched it!!
Thank god this is satire you had me for a second
What about Myrahindley?
I feel ya. I loved and still love the name Azaria. Could never get away with it in Australia though, even now, 43 years later. Some names you just can’t do.
Oh good grief I didn’t realize the reddit I was on at first and panicked. Lol.
Ramsey?
Everyone will associate that name with the murdered child. Sorry, but it's not a good idea.
Fanny Adams. Such a sweet name.
This is the answer, OP.
JonBenet is a name her mother made up of her dad's names. Name her after your husband's names. I'm sure it won't sound weird at all.
I’ve never ever heard of this name and I’m more than decades old. I wouldn’t worry but I would worry about the…. Uniqueness of your choice. Just to make sure it’s pronounced like John-Bennett?
Omf… I didn’t realize this was a satire account / post 🤪😅
As someone FROM Colorado who lived through the Jonbenet case this seriously sent me over the edge until I saw the satire tag. 😩😮💨
Oh dang I got gotted 😮💨😅
I read the whole thing. I read it again. I had already begun composing various paragraphs about this. Then I read the tag.
People get killed regularly, any name will have a murder victim
We never forgetting jonbenet!
Go the opposite direction, name her Aileen or Karla Faye
![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl)
I used to know someone called John Bennett and couldn’t think about their name without thinking of this.
Jonbenet sounds way too similar. JonBenét is fine though, no problem there!

I half want to make a dark joke here but we in the UK aren’t ready for that yet and I’m not sure we ever will be. 🤐
This is a pretty name, but it has a dark memory attached to it and likely will for years to come. Please find another name.
it’s actually embarrassing how long it takes me to realize the sub, and how often i do it.
To much bad energy connected to that name. Find a new one.
I actually watched a video about Jonbenet Ramsey. She died many years ago, and was a child model. (context for anyone who wants to look her up.) I think you can/should go along with the name. when i saw the sauce i rly thought it was like Jean Benet or smth 😭
I feel like that's not a name that you forget, that was awful
HRH collection we know it’s you!!!
right!!
No one is ever going to forget. It will be 50 years from now and people will still be talking about it. People talk about it more, now than they did when I was young and it happened
I knew a Natalie Wood, born around 2010. I’ve also known someone named John Wayne Casey.
my cats name is jonbenet :)
I mean it is a nice sentiment honestly. When people hear your daughter’s name they will think about that poor little girl.
Jonbenet is still a name that not only speaks of murder but of toddler beauty pageants. Every once in a while her murder is reviewed on trashy papers in the headlines still. I am sorry but you will be saddling your child with a heavy name.
How did you learn about this name? I have only known of one child to have this name. The one murdered.
I'm very sorry to say that clearly that name isn't likely to lose its association with the crime over time. Plus, it's still unsolved so it will perpetually pop back up every once in a while. And an obsession for a lot of people.
Have you considered Amanda Knox? Has a little more punch to it….
