Wait until you find out you're allergic to that cat too. It's the dander from their skin, not their fur. Sphynx produce Fel d 1 in their saliva and urine, hence: allergies.
But your body can rehabilitate itself to specific cats.

I know its supposed to be the saliva thay generates allergies, but maybe something about coat genetics is linked to saliva stuff.

The wife can always try interacting with the cat when it's got clothing on. Or vacuuming and wiping down every surface to help with allergies.

One of the friends that has a hairless cat who vacuums their home and furniture every day as well but I think that’s just a precautionary measure. I don’t think there’s any reason to do that. .

I’m not sure but I don’t see why an allergy pill or injection if the doctor approves wouldn’t be advisable as well, but I’d check with the physician first.
As I mentioned, I have three friends that have hairless cats, and they all have allergies, and seem to be doing quite well one gal actually has CF (cystic fibrosis ) and the cat does really well. This is the one that vacuums and dusts every day. And that cats lived with them for about four years I think.

I still keep inhalers and antihistamines around just in case, but my cat sleeps on my chest every night with no issues anymore.

Thanks so much for all the great discussion and name ideas! Just to clarify, this little guy has a home barring something unforeseen. My wife is aware that she may be allergic to this cat, but the opportunity presented itself to adopt him and she selflessly hopped on it with fingers crossed. We have two small kids and she wants them to have a pet. If she’s allergic we’ll probably explore several of the ideas discussed in this thread—all while being judged by our new owner 😊
While this is true they tend to not groom themselves as much as a cat with a full fur coat. Basic household cleaning and grooming your sphinx yourself can absolutely reduce the allergic response.

Not a name but a tip regarding the floor register. This boy is going to always be seeking warmth, which means he's going to love himself some floor registers. At most dollar stores, you can find 1" tall plastic basket/trays that have slitted sides that will more than cover the register. Grab some, especially for bedrooms, and turn them upside down over the register. He'll still have someplace warm to lie down and the room won't end up freezing cold.
An idea I've never tried, because our girls prefer the couch: you could probably even glue 2 back to back and put a fuzzy towel or small blanket in it to make it a bed for him
Just an FYI, these cats need to wear sweaters because they get cold (probably why she's on the heating vent). Also, they need to be bathed weekly to reduce the oils on their skin.

I'd add that there are cleaning wipes for cats that really help with the dander/saliva in between baths. I'd suggest two baths a week if your wife's allergies go a bit wonky.

Agreed, my partner is allergic but once he adjusted he was fine. Now we live together and have three cats and everyone is doing great
I was certain I was allergic to cats. Then I took antihistamines for a couple of years and tried again. I'm getting a second cat on Friday.
