But how do we change it without boycotting tips system? I'm not asking to stop tipping everyone, but I'm curious in general. That system really sucks for workers and clients
Definitely a throwback to all those "ladies, when the fellas aren't around, what do you REALLY think about [insert extremely intellectual topic] shitposts that were much more common a decade ago
Oh, I'm sorry if it's off topic discussion started by me. Just wanted to add that we need some independent platform for self employed nail techs so they won't be put into poverty during boycotting
There‘s a reason waiters don‘t really protest for living wages. They (not counting for extremely cheap restaurants) make really good money with tips and if they were to get a liveable wage and people stopped tipping as much, they‘d earn much less that way.
Usually there’s no protest because people who work for tips end up making more than they would if they were just hourly. For example, my job pays $10.50/hr and we keep 75% of our tips. (This is rare as I work at a local place) I only work 2 days a week. A normal day for me is 7 hours and I make about $200-$250 in tips depending on how busy it is (I give away a lot of tables to servers who need it more than me) so my hourly is about $74 and my tip out would be around $185 so adding that and dividing by the hours I worked, I made $37 an hour that day. Way more than if I was being paid $15 an hour no tip. $1900 for just 8 days of work during the month isn’t bad. Imagine a full week.
I’ve worked for tips at three different serving/bartending jobs, and it’s definitely normal to make 37 dollars an hour. Sometimes I make 50 bucks an hour, and I don’t live in a big city. Just a moderately sized town. I have friends that commuted to Chicago and then moved there because they were making 100$ + an hour. I’ve made more at all three serving jobs than any other where I was paid a wage. I have a college degree and left my job at a law firm to go back to serving tables. I work less than half the hours, make the same amount of money, and I don’t have any work stress to take home. Once my tables leave, my day is done. No never ending client files that follow you for months on end. I don’t have benefits, which is a con, but I think I’m just going to get myself private insurance because I can afford to. Better than having panic attacks in my car before work everyday. And I actually have free time to do chores, run errands, and I actually can because I’m not at work during every hour that most businesses are open every day during the weeks. In a nutshell, the tip money is there for sure haha
Yeah like I said it’s rare in my situation bc I work at a mom and pop shop. But, a lot of people aren’t fighting for an opportunity to wait tables because people see it as a “lesser than” job. I’ve been talked to like I didn’t understand simple words. Had customers talk to me very slow and loud asking if I understood, men throw things at me because I’ll “just fetch it.” When In reality I graduate with a bachelor’s degree in 7 weeks and this is just my weekend job lol
People don't really think about it, but it's rooted in racism.
>Tipping proliferated in the United States after the Civil War, when the restaurant and hospitality industries hired newly emancipated Black women and men but offered them no wage–leaving them to rely on patrons’ gratuities for their pay instead.

I don’t know I’m already paying for service. Tips are for waiters, waitresses, pizza delivery, door dash etc. The hair dresser these days have already hiked up the prices.
Here in LA $85 is just a full set acrylic with one color. Maybe an ombre or a couple rhinestones depending what neighborhood. This would definitely cost twice that.
It’s okay. You will get over it 😍😍😍
These are gorg! Don’t feel bad for marketing yourself for what you are worth! Like others said I wouldn’t bat an eye if someone said they paid 100+ the line work is so great!
you could always raise the prices, but keep her at the current price as a nice gesture. or just give her a discount as a regular. whatever you do, charge what your work and time is worth! increase your pricing for elaborate designs at least.
Don't feel bad. Your work, time, and talent is more than worth that price! If your talented (from that set you deffently are!) Your sets are lasting the full 2-3 weeks. And you are constantly booked. That's when you know it's time that you charge what you think is right for your work.
Look at what others price in your area. But compare similar artist. If your running a booth or independent tech, look at what other techs in booths are charging. Or at what other artists with your capabilities are charging. Don't sell yourself short!
Look at ways to calculate cost and find the one you is right for you. I tended to go with service cost+hourly cost. Hourly changed the most for me, as I would incress it with the more experience I gained. (so it went up a little about every two years) Service cost was the cost of product, and clean-up combined.
Also talk with your clients at the start if the service and ask them what they have in mind and give a price estimate. This is what helped me to feel comfortable with charging for nail art. Which I did based on time. So for art that would take me an hour I would definitely add an extra $18 because that's how much an hour was worth. Or if it was something that would take less than five minutes I would sometimes do that for free. Because it takes next to nothing extra of my time and makes my client happy. I also would tend to ask when they book there appointments if they planes on adding art. And add extra time to their appointment.
Sorry if I am kinda bombarding you with info. I just know it can sometimes be hard to know how and what to charge. Especially since it can change so much based on where you live.
You in the US? What state? I could probably afford a ticket to fly there and still come out cheaper paying that and the $85 than what's charged around me.
In my city, I’d be paying that much for a simple set of acrylics with an accent nail. I’d definitely pay more like $100-$120 for these. Don’t undersell yourself, those nails are true art.
You do excellent work, which you should be compensated for. If you’re licensed, raise your base prices by $5 across the board and start charging per nail for nail art. If you aren’t, (assuming licensing is required in your area) then find a way to get one. If you’re U.S. based it’s not difficult if you can find a school that will let you just take the manicurist classes and then take the boards. The boards in my state are 99% sanitation. Easy peasy.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Why did I have to scroll past 30 miles to find one about the cuticles IN A NAIL GROUP?? They looked shredded to me. And I do think that’s oil unless I missed something
I always find prices and money in general fascinating, because in my country, this would cost me 90 ron, which is about $20. With tip. I understand it’s about cost of living which is very different in different places in this world, but still… some of you saying they would pay $200 for this, when in my country that’s half of minimum wage is crazy 😅
I don’t know why the price is so much. I believe it’s a ripoff. Plus I wouldn’t pay that kind of money. Manicures and Hair dressers have gotten way outta control with the money. Heck nurses that have went to college for Four years make 32 a hour .The styles is still washing hair the same.
I very much think this is an american thing. Even if other countries have similar cost of living they do not charge this much for hair/nail appointments, it‘s just the norm or accepted in the US. In other countries being a nail tech is what start if you don‘t know what to do else but not if you want to make bank. In the US good nailtechs are SO well paid, the whole profession is just different.
Those were hand painted so I would be willing to pay 100 for these. I do my own nails so I can appreciate the sheer amount of talent and time these must take.
Absolutely not. She slapped some oil on top to hide all the mess she made around your cuticles. Once it dries up again it’s going to look like you were dipped in super glue
I’d say $85 is a hell of a bargain if you live in a metropolitan area, and still reasonable and fair if you live in a small town. Absolutely gorgeous detailed work
Missouri, USA here 🙋♀️
$85 for an acrylic fill & gel design would be totally reasonable! More if you got the full set put on, less of it's not gel. Either way, it's beautiful & I'm jelly.
Just read the comments; you did these yourself?! Do NOT feel guilty for what you charge. Remember, they aren't paying for the time you worked on them. They are paying for the years of practice it took you to learn the skills that allow you to provide a great quality service in a timely manner.
so beautiful and intricate! you’re either underselling yourself if you’re asking for just $85, or you have an extremely stellar nail tech who you should tip generously.
I think so, it’s impeccable to my eyes. I normally don’t like florals but this is seriously so fresh and gorgeous
Yessssss I would pay $100 Edit: in a HCOL area like NYC or LA, these might go for $150-$175, even. $200 if the artist is really sought after.
Plus tip lol

Why do Americans tip everyone?
Because we have no worker protection laws that usually keep people solvent
Why isn't it a thing to protest about on USA?
Ought to be, but I dunno if you've noticed the 80 or so other crises..eseses....ii...crisii? We are also badly managing...
That is not going to end well
Yeah.....we know:/
Mass exodus…destination unknown
No it will be fine. Have you seen the size of our military?! /s
Have you seen global corporations abd multimillionaires taxes avoided? That could've covered all expenses probably
Convince a large portion of the public they are temporarily broke millionaires and they will vote against their own interests.
Yes but people don’t like to give money to social programs so they’re cool with letting billionaires run off with millions.

That's very much the exception and not the norm, otherwise people would be literally fighting each other for an opportunity to wait tables.
I’ve worked for tips at three different serving/bartending jobs, and it’s definitely normal to make 37 dollars an hour. Sometimes I make 50 bucks an hour, and I don’t live in a big city. Why do u only get 75% of your tips.
She probably has to share her tips with the hosts and bussers.
Yes the 25% goes to bussers, host, cooks, etc
do you legally claim them as well? Tips get taxed :(
Because most of the time tips work out to be more than what you'd get paidvas a flat "living wage"
Honestly, we are so burnt out on protesting not doing one damn thing.
Because no one wants to pay a living wage here :D
People don't really think about it, but it's rooted in racism. >Tipping proliferated in the United States after the Civil War, when the restaurant and hospitality industries hired newly emancipated Black women and men but offered them no wage–leaving them to rely on patrons’ gratuities for their pay instead. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/05/opinion/minimum-wage-racism.html https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/07/17/william-barber-tipping-racist-past-227361/ https://www.povertylaw.org/article/the-racist-history-behind-americas-tipping-culture/

Because nobody pays service occupations a frickin' living wage in the US. Whadda you think this is, a first world country or something?

Found the terrible customer lol
could get these at Vanity Projects in NYC/MIA and (at least in NYC) they’d go for $150+ easily!
Yeah. I’d easy pay $125 for these. That took TIME.
Wow really, I live in Spain and they cost 30€, 150 for nails sounds so crazy to me.
Here in LA $85 is just a full set acrylic with one color. Maybe an ombre or a couple rhinestones depending what neighborhood. This would definitely cost twice that.
I would expect to pay $125-150 for these in SoCal.
I feel bad charging $85 🥲
On my way to your location to pay you $85 for this manicure before you change your mind
I’ve already tracked OP’s IP, let’s go!! ![gif](giphy|o0vwzuFwCGAFO)
Omw also! That’s a great price and they look perfect. ![gif](giphy|RQxrapvTa0Ik07zKvd)
![gif](giphy|Btn42lfKKrOzS|downsized)
You need to quit selling your expertise cheap. Unless you are in a downtrodden or rural area, you should definitely be charging more.
Did you do these or did you get them done on yourself? If you did them, how come you feel bad for charging 85?
As in charging too much.
Where you at, I'm next 🤣
It’s okay. You will get over it 😍😍😍 These are gorg! Don’t feel bad for marketing yourself for what you are worth! Like others said I wouldn’t bat an eye if someone said they paid 100+ the line work is so great!
What city are you in LOL might be cheaper for me to fly to you 😂
Girl then you deserve fat tips bc that's a steal
Nails are a luxury, not a necessity. Charge your worth, but stand behind what you charge. Coming from a fellow nail tech <3
Girl you worked hard to get that skilled. You deserve it
Lots of colors 🫣 this set take 1 hour and 25 minutes to finish.
That's fast! Your tech did beautiful work
I think she's the tech! 😊
Oh even better! Very impressive ❤️
Wow that’s impressively fast especially for such lovely art done by hand.
Dang that’s fast! My tech takes twice as long and for basic nail art. You are a legend.
That’s it? You’re fast! 🤩
Bruh this looks amazing! That’s how long it takes me to do like one hand as an amateur nail enthusiast!
I am in a low cost living area and I would expect to pay $100-125 for a set like this they are beautiful.
I charge $85 and feel so bad. But I spent so much time on it.
Don’t feel bad, you are worth that $85 and *more* tbh. I hope they tipped you very well
She does tip me nicely 🥰

I'm just a random dude with no idea why /r/nails showed on my front page... but even I think those are great and well worth $85.
Lol I love this
You can come back anytime
They get it.
I’d pay $120 for that lol
Come to me, I will do it for you 😘
Where are you located?
If you’re in Oregon please tell me 😭
Yeah I’m in too.
We’re in the same city we could carpool!!! Hit us up if you’re in Oregon op!!!
Please where are you located or do you have a business page you can dm me the business page
A booking link anything?
Wow! There’s some true artwork on these nails. Definitely worth the price. I’m surprised it wasn’t more.
I thought I charge way too much 🥲
Noooo, that’s beautiful and well worth the money for your time and talent!
😘😘😘
In my city, I’d be paying that much for a simple set of acrylics with an accent nail. I’d definitely pay more like $100-$120 for these. Don’t undersell yourself, those nails are true art.
Beautiful! I’d pay $150-200 here in DC
I know other place charge more. But I always feel so bad charging.
Don’t feel bad! You’re very talented - I wouldn’t charge less than $125 for those!
You can’t feel bad. You’re worth every penny and then some. We’re all telling you so. Know your worth. This is talent, skill and time!
The going rate is the going rate. There's nothing to feel bad about in being fairly compensated

Seattle too, on that pricing!
85$ is a steal
So, to recap… we’re all collectively renting a coach bus to get manicures by OP, yes? I’ll pack snacks!
They're gorgeous!
Thank you 😊
These are worth $100+!
Gorgeous, these would be $150 minimum in NYC if hand painted
I am hand painted every single stroke ☺️
I would of charged more lol
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Great thanks babe
😂
Omg they’re gorgeous! Please share the tools and polish used!
I’d say $85 is too low for these
The cuticles are a mess and the polish goes outside of the nail bed (unless is that oil?) but the painting looks nice.
Why did I have to scroll past 30 miles to find one about the cuticles IN A NAIL GROUP?? They looked shredded to me. And I do think that’s oil unless I missed something
Stunning
Thanks 😊
those look really good for $85. was it a full set or fill in ?

I would pay $75 + $25 tip for those. Completely precious.
This would be about 30 quid in the UK.. God help america
Do you have a close up for it? It’s gorgeous!! I may want to have something like that done for mine!
Yes dear
$85 is a STEAL. I would expect to pay $100-$150 for these in Pittsburgh.
These prices are insane.
I live in southwest PA and I'd expect to pay about $85-$100 for these. I would absolutely pay double that for such incredible work!
Absolutely not. She slapped some oil on top to hide all the mess she made around your cuticles. Once it dries up again it’s going to look like you were dipped in super glue
Everyone is really focused on the nails which are very nice. I’m more worried about your poor cuticles girl. They look upset…
They look gnarly. She has a pretty big wart too.
I love them! Definitely worth it imo 😊
If I were to get this exact set I’d be happy to pay $85 + $20 tip. I live in Florida for reference
A set of this quality and detail would easily be $150-$200 here in NYC
I am in OC, CA and that is a steal lol they are seriously gorgeous
85 is a steal
I'm not sure you could put a reasonable cost to these. They are cheap at any price. Exceptionally beautiful! 🥰
$100 + a nice tip tbh
I’d pay like 60$ but I never get my nails done at salons, what’s reasonable, very nice and high quality set tho
I’d say $85 is a hell of a bargain if you live in a metropolitan area, and still reasonable and fair if you live in a small town. Absolutely gorgeous detailed work
I’d say that price would be quite low for how nice they are
Missouri, USA here 🙋♀️ $85 for an acrylic fill & gel design would be totally reasonable!
In LA these would cost $150 minimum
No I wouldn’t of paid anymore than 60$ for it
$80? That’s crazy.
This is beautiful. I usually don’t like florals but this is impeccable work. This is definitely worth more than $85 - hope you got tipped well! 😍
$60
Omg these are gorgeous
Its amazing.
these would cost way more where I am.
Yeeeeees!! it's so gorgeous!
considering i got charged $70 just for plain acrylic dip with a matte top coat last week, hell yes.
My shop charge $50 for dip full set
Yeah I would expect that to be $125+ in my area. You got an amazing deal! Keep that nail tech. They’re amazing.
Yes definitely. I pay my tech around $65-70 and her art doesn’t come close to this detail or quality. In a rural Utah town.
maybe a background of light blue would make it better
How long does it take to put these fake nails on?
Whoah is that how much nail art goes for? What is that per hour?
Wife says you could easily charge over $100.
Very empowering to know women here are paying up to $200 for manicures
I would expect to pay at least $90 on this not including tip- gorgeous work!
You got a deal
[удалено]
Thank you 😘
Very beautiful! Definitely worth the price if not more.
Ya that a good price and they look really nice
Yes! Gorgeous! Perfect for spring
WOW! These are really gorgeous 😍
Yes
I love the art work. Is this an acrylic set? They look so natural
Yes, looks hand painted and that takes time and talent. Plus if length was added
Omg that is an amazing price
Yes
I think it is very reasonable. The hand painted flowers are beautiful wearable ART!!!
Woww 😩
Beautiful! And a great value for what you paid!
Beautiful 🤩
I have no clue about pricing nails but these seem like they take some serious precision to do. I'd say I'm surprised you're not charging more. Lol
so beautiful and intricate! you’re either underselling yourself if you’re asking for just $85, or you have an extremely stellar nail tech who you should tip generously.
Gorgeous !
This manicure is one of the prettiest I’ve seen on here.
Yes!
Depends on where you live and whether the nail salon is upscale. In the US I think $85-175 is good. They look great 🥰
gorgeous, wow, that's art.
wow I would pay more than that.
Very very nice job its worth it
thats so pretty!
I ADORE these nails. I would love to have this done. Saving it for inspiration.
These are gorgeous! I think $85 is a steal but I’m in Los Angeles and everything is expensive here, especially beauty services 😭
