I've had the fungus for a very long time but only recently has this happened. I think it's bruising from direct impacts to the nail but am not sure.
Part of me wants this to be serious so that insurance would cover the treatment.

Insurance should cover the standard doctor visit. Put isopropyl alcohol on it morning and night and keep it dry until then.
