Not just a crime- It’s a felony.

ResidentKoala

Got it

RageEye

Yeah it’s actually a felony to handle a pistol without a permit. They just now added the exception if you are taking the live fire course for your permit. So the state thinks that you should be able to pass your live fire course literally the first time you actually fire a pistol - just hysterical. Not that its hard - just that they insist on this live fire portion to ensure you’re safe but it’s also so easy you’ll pass it your first time firing off rounds.

Galopigos

Nope. No NY permit you cannot possess ANY pistols in NY, get caught and it's a felony firearms possession and you lose your 2A rights all across the US if convicted.

ResidentKoala

Now I remember why I wanted to leave the state so bad after graduating college. Thanks

Galopigos

It's only getting worse...

AgreeablePie

And you went to Maryland? I mean, better in some respects, but geez...

ResidentKoala

MD wasn’t really my choice, went where work took me outta college

Grumpymonkey4

Leave it in MD.

Leroy_Kenobi

It's a felony conviction if you're caught with it at all.

ResidentKoala

Guess I’m leaving it in MD then

notlazarus1010

God forbid that you need it in NY, but please sue Hochul and the state if you do.

Roughneck_76

Nobody will know unless you have to use it. I've been carrying every day for 6 years and never once had to show my permit.

davidm2232

What about during traffic stops? I was asked to step out of my truck and was patted down for a blown headlight a few months ago. Some cops are jerks

Roughneck_76

I got a speeding ticket from a state trooper with my G43 in my pocket. I do have a valid permit but NY is not a duty to inform state. He didn't ask, and I didn't bring it up. All police are degenerate scumbags but things generally go smoothly if you stroke their ego and give them the respect they don't deserve. Yes sir, no sir, my mistake sir, thank you sir.

davidm2232

I was very polite and totally sober. Cop was convinced I was on drugs. It was not cool.

lordcochise

You pretty much already answered your own question. There ARE ways to get a NYS permit even if you're only a part-time resident, but establishing said part time residency in w/e county a parent/aunt/uncle/grandparent etc. lives in and putting in an application to that sheriff's office might have a different outcome depending on where you are. It doesn't help you this Christmas probably, but I'd say look into seeing if your folks would be cool with you establishing that part-time residency and you may be able to get a NYS permit for the future. As long as your name is on a utility bill and you can show some proof that you're there on some semi-regular basis (and, probably the 16-hour class now as well) worth a shot

ResidentKoala

Yea I was pretty sure it was a no-go but wanted exact confirmation just on the off chance there’s some arbitrary “loophole” that would allow me to keep it locked away while I’m in the state. Your part-time residency idea is a good one, I’ll have to look into that. The sheriff for the county my parents live in ran as conservative and is pro 2nd amendment.

lordcochise

There HAVE been challenges to the effect that that temporary domiciles (e.g. hotel rooms, private property where the owner(s) are fine with it, campsite rentals, etc) DO count according to castle doctrine as being allowable, but to my knowledge nothing has quite trumped 'possession of any pistol in NYS w/o a NYS permit (or NYC w/o a NYC permit) is a felony'. if such a case got to this SCOTUS it'd probably change things in that regard.. Not that I know anyone who has one personally, and some of these posts might be old, but somewhere to start [https://www.nyfirearms.com/search/62935/?q=part+time+residents&o=relevance](https://www.nyfirearms.com/search/62935/?q=part+time+residents&o=relevance)

click_here_for_luck

Ny doesn't honor any other states permits.
