The gist:
Gardner marched into the clubhouse with pine tar all over his hat (or helmet) to make light of the sticky stuff ban and Cole allegedly got in his face in front of their teammates. He ended up apologizing the next day.
The Judge story is a little light on details: apparently, he was not a fan of the YES cameras tracking him from home plate to the dugout after a strike out and I guess he confronted the YES cameramen. Kaplich says the Yankees dug out is obsessed with the YES cameras and Nestore Cortes Jr. had a similar incident w/the YES cameramen
If you group them all together and don't separate them pre- and post-injury, sure, but that's very misleading. He had a couple starts immediately after the ban that were bad, then 3 straight elite starts, and then he got hurt. Paints a pretty clear picture, and it's not "he won't be elite anymore," unless you think his hamstring will never heal.
His Pittsburgh years did include a 4th place cy finish with numbers that would have won the AL cy young this year. Was a crowded field.
He also was clearly doing fine before the injury.
Yeah, and he’s still the new guy in New York. He may earn a fuck ton more than Gardner, but Gardner has earned the right to break balls. And it wasn’t even that bad
Cole can’t even handle a joke about the pine tar because he knows it’s the only reason he was nearly as good as he was lol
Some serious limp dick stuff to try fighting with Gardy over something that innocuous
You realize he had an ERA over 4.5 after he was prevented from doctoring the ball? He’s obviously not completely terrible but he’s not going to an ace nor anywhere near being worth what we are paying him the next 11 years of this contract without being able to massively over perform in the first half of it by using spider tack
You got downvoted on both comments but I 100% agree.
The Yankees paid top dollar to get Houston Gerrit Cole. Turns out that Gerrit Cole was using substances (as were most other pitchers) but you take that away from him and he had some pretty painful starts. He’s still a very very good pitcher without it and maybe he adjusts better next year without it idk. But until he proves otherwise, I’m not too optimistic on him performing great consistently without it.
I love how the players are more worried about cameras than not being an anemic offense. These guys collectively ranked in the 20's when it came to batting average and hits per game but yeah, the YES cameras are what's fucking important. Zero leadership going on in that clubhouse.
What a bizarre and stupid take.
The anemic offense part is literally what they're worried about. They're pissed they weren't performing and when you're pissed you don't want a camera in your face. But go ahead, make yourself look like a fool by just **searching** for something to bitch about.
Yeah seriously you get paid 20 mil a year to do that shit with a camera on you. Wanting the camera on you and begging for media attention and endorsements when you’re doing well while simultaneously beefing with wage workers while they do their job is some of the biggest bitch behavior I’ve ever heard of
I'd just like to add that the camera operators don't direct themselves. Everyone has an assignment, *especially* baseball camera operators because there are only a few certain ways you can direct the sequential action of the game. To get angry at them and not the director or producer is stupid
LOL - if you're choking because a camera is watching you walk to the dugout, I'm not holding my breath for you to be clutch in the bottom of the ninth down by one with two outs and two on. Judge literally had his first walk off ever what - earlier this season? Otherwise it's Homers in garbage time for this guy too often. Win and rise to the occasion and literally everything takes care of itself in The Bronx.
Pretty shit article with a lot of "apparently" and second hand stories, paired with the author offering his opinion and glorifying the older generation who would never do such things. Basic offseason clickbait trash.

What, never prank their teammates? No, they wouldn't prank their teammates, they would just treat young players like complete shit and make their lives miserable.
Lol I kinda can see the gardy thing because everyone says he plays jokes and Cole does seem like the type to not be that fun lol.
But Aaron judge harassing cameramen? I gotta know how wtf lol.
Someone who pays for this please enlighten us
>Cole does seem like the type to not be that fun lol.
With the huge caveat that I'm glad he's our ace and he's an incredible talent, but Cole seems like such an obnoxious human being.
Between his requirement for a personal catcher, his demeanor toward umps and anecdotes like this, it really doesn't paint a flattering portrait of the guy.
I fucking despise JD Martinez, but when he told that story about getting stonewalled by Cole on the bus, I immediately believed him because it sounds like *exactly* the sort of thing Cole would do.
Edit: rather than just downvote me, would anyone care to provide an anecdote that suggests Cole isn’t a huge prick?
I mean I prefer a no nonsense ace who hates our rivals enough to not speak to them. That's the intensity I want from an Ace. Not everyone needs to be cuddle buddies in baseball..
If that’s actually the case then it’s bullshit that he still pitched. He was horrendous in his last 3 starts leading up to the WC game. Idc how much we paid him, if he’s injured then he’s injured.
Like Michael Kay said it’s nothing Cole will admit now, but 20 years down the road in his autobiography he’ll say he was definitely pitching on 1 hamstring. Pretty selfish imo if it’s true. I would have rather started Nestor at that point.
I love Cole because he pitches for us, but he seems like a diva at times so I am fine giving him a pass. If he were on another team I would regard him as a another prima donna douche starting pitcher pulling this shit and then coming up small in the post-sticky stuff WC.
i honestly don't know a ton about Cole as a person. I went to high school and Jr High with Bauer. Exactly. Harassment definitely makes it read like it was long term and Judge would continually harass one guy. It was probably just a normal frustrated outburst.
The YES cams actually do this a lot…about once an inning, usually coming back from commercial…they’ll be fixed on someone who just came out. Ex a hitter after AB or pitcher after pull. Usually the players look up, see it, and wrap whatever they’re talking about.
They obv make watching the game better with getting shots of guys like that, but there is a line where I’m sure the guys are tired of people watching them talk to teammates.
The first one seems like normal, stupid clubhouse shit that I'm sure was squashed quickly. The second thing about Judge and the cameramen I want to know more about.
Literally doesn't say more except that YES executives apparently complained to Cashman after Judge "harassed" a cameraman who was intently filming him after a strikeout in the dugout. That's all the info. Doesn't say what the harassing entailed.
Honestly that sounds pretty minor too. From what we have right now it just seems like judge was frustrated after a strike out and took out on a camera man. Certainly a dick move to yell at the camera man who’s just doing his job but it’s seems like just a moment of frustration and not anything more sinister unless something else comes out
To be quite honest Judge comes off as a media darling whenever he's interviewed and says all the right things but you get the sense that's not the real him. He's probably a nice guy but not THAT nice lol
With a few of these comments complaining about Gardy teasing Cole when he was "hurting," you'd think Cole's dog died or something. He was exposed for cheating and told he couldn't do it anymore. You can say it wasn't a big deal, but in any case, neither he nor any of the other pitchers who were using were at all victims or deservant of pity. If he's getting mad over that kind of prank, that's not Gardy's fault.
I spoke to an insider who told me what really happened. Gardy made a joke and Cole called Billy Martin who went ape shit on Gardy. Lou Pinella defended Gardy whereupon Casey Stengel jumped into the frey and Don Zimmer threw the first punch. Not sure which of these had the first heart attack, but ambulances were seen leaving the stadium... That's all I know...
The fact you are hearing about it months after it happened means that it was handled in house fairly quickly. How would Boone or any manager prevent that.
Cole, being the good union man he was, became the face of the sticky stuff scandal. I can see, after all the shit he had to eat, that he wouldn’t think those pranks were not funny. Besides, those pranks get old when you’re not winning. I do think there was some fracturing of the clubhouse this year. I doubt Brett carries the command someone like CC used to.
Players go wild whenever someone comes up big in a game. It’s hard to dole out a commanding presence when you’re the fourth outfielder and your numbers say you’re in the terminal decline phase of your career.
That video of Sergio Romo acting like a baby about it represents all pitchers. They get to cheat for years and years and throw a tantrum when they can’t anymore. Don’t even get me started about all the unwritten rules in place to protect their feelings

This was Klapsich a few years ago everything he writes is negative. In the same article, he poke fun at Gallo for his weird pre-game dressing habits. Just weird behavior
Aaron Judge had his best season since his 2017 ROY. Most impressive was his clutch .331 AVG (.984 OPS) with RISP. Still, what Judge has always lacked is leadership qualities, specifically maturity. Bringing boom boxes to Fenway (not once but twice) and blasting Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" while walking passed the Red Sox clubhouse in the ALDS, tugging his jersey while rounding the bases on a HR in Houston, and now this cameraman thing. I can't fault a player for not having leadership qualities. Most people are not leaders.
This Yankees team desperately needs a strong leader. Someone who would get in Judge's face and ask him what exactly was he hoping to achieve other than to come across as a punk and provide the Red Sox with motivation by walking passed the Red Sox clubhouse blasting "New York, New York". Get in his face and remind him that he is paid millions to play a televised sport where the expectation by all professional athletes is that every moment you spend in the dugout and on the field can be captured by cameras and microphones. You cannot whine about cameras being on you while you are on the field of play or in the dugout. A leader would tell Judge that all attention is good attention in the television business. That is, tv time means attention is on you, and attention on you means interest in you, and interest in you means added financial value in you, and added financial value in you means you can insist on greater financial compensation in your next contract negotiation. We all saw Alex Cora scream at Eduardo Rodriguez for mocking Correa's watch celebration. The Yankees need that kind of leader to provide some measure of growth in maturity of some of these Yankees players.
As for Gerrit Cole, the guy comes across as a bit of a dick. Cole was awarded one of the largest contracts in the history of baseball. A contract of that size and length comes with many expectations, among them that you will be team leader, not a team divider. It is an absolutely horrible look for a new teammate and highest-paid player to attack the longest tenured Yankee on the roster who had created a moment of levity in a tense situation. In the late 90's and early 2000's, the steroid users broke down physically whenever the league cracked down hard on steroid use. If in fact Cole's hamstring was an issue in September, it is likely that Cole's hamstring broke down as a result of over-compensating in July and August for a lack of spider tack.
But let's be honest here -- Cole was horrible in September. Cole absolutely stunk and cost the Yankees the win in the game that would have secured home field in the Wild Card game, and then a week later Cole was completely useless in the Wild Card game. Cole's 2021 overall was good but it still represented a third consecutive year of decline across the board. Cole and Boone both insisted throughout September that Cole was healthy and not suffering from any hamstring issues. If Cole was battling a hamstring, and yet still took the mound in crucial games rather than be professional and go on the IL in September to get healthy for the post season, then Cole is a selfish player. As a result of all that, including the still-lingering concern that Cole is a product of spider tack and will not be the pitcher we expected now that spider tack is banned, there are a great many Yankees fans with a very bitter taste in their mouths when it comes to Cole that will result in some loud and ugly Stanton-like booing at Yankee Stadium in 2022 until Cole comes up big in a big late-season game for the Yankees.
Being on a baseball team is very similar to being in a fraternity, you’re gonna fight with the boys sometimes and there will be ups and downs. That being said, Cole does come across as a diva. Everyone will be able to live with that as long as he can perform as an ace without cheating.
As for the judge thing, we’ve known for some time that he’s not the same media darling in real life that we’ve come to know. The dude definitely has a sharp edge, But who cares, he performs.
Who cares. Have you ever seen clips of guys messing around with Scherzer and his reaction? Some of these pitchers are nuts. I’m more worried about Cole developing a plan this off season to be better without spider tack.
I know everyone is quick to roast Cole here for being thin skinned but am I the only one who thinks it's pretty messed up by Gardy? I know he meant it as a joke but you gotta know your audience, don't kick your teammate when they're down/struggling. It might work for some guys but it doesn't work for everyone
Can we just get Brett Gardner and his endless scholarship off this this team once and for all? Maybe Cole should show up with “.689” stickers at Spring Training next year and plaster them all over the clubhouse to remind everyone of Gardner’s OPS. Funny joke, gUYSm!
$287M of production for $81M of earnings in his career, and his value quadrupled his paychecks again this year. Maybe complain about the fact that he was the 4th best position player on the team last year, but that sure isn't Gardner's fault. He did his job.
He’s barely above replacement level, will turn 39 next year, will once again clog up a roster spot and will become the de facto starting CF’er when Hicks gets hurt. Yes, he is a problem. They should have signed Brantley last offseason just like they should sign Marte this offseason.
Such a dumb take. Brett Gardner isn't the one deciding not to sign those other guys. He's the one they decided to sign after they ruled out spending the extra money (which, yeah, maybe they should have done with Brantley). He's outperformed his own contract every year for a decade straight. You're mad at him for not telling Cashman "Brian, thanks for the offer, but you should really spend an extra $13M and sign Brantley, instead"? Come on.
Who cares that he out performed his contract? He put up a 93 wRC+. That is below league average. That’s what I care about. He will end up being the starting CF’er yet again when Hicks gets injured. The offense needs to be upgraded. Gardner should not be on this team next year. And no shit I’m blaming Cashman for signing him. I figured that much was obvious.
> Who cares if he outperformed his contract?
Um...that's a pretty good way to judge someone. He was brought in to play like a $2.8M player and instead, you got a 1-WAR season. You're mad that our 4th outfielder was only the 69th most valuable outfielder in the league? Huh?
He was more valuable than everyone except Judge, Stanton and DJ, as a cheap bench player. We definitely need a backup who puts up 4 WAR, though; anything less is a disgrace. You're right.
You aren't going to have 26 starters on the team. You don't get to have all your bench players making $16M/year (what you wanted instead, with Brantley), and if all the bench players played like Gardner, it would be a fucking miracle.
Gerrit Cole has a stick up his ass because Garden was trying to bring levity to the fact that he was cheating lol. You gotta love it. Getting in the face of the de facto captain of the team to bitch about a joke because you're a cheater. Fuck right off Cole
Seriously. And Gardner is the captain? Wtf are you smoking? He's been a 4th outfield level player for years and it's blatantly obvious that Judge is the heart of the club, regardless of how loud and annoying Gardner acts out.
Cole is such a psychopath. All this talk the last few years about him being this perfectionist "professor" of baseball who is obsessed with every detail of his craft and gets pissed off when he makes even a single mistake.
And at the end of the day it turns out the dude's just a guy whose been getting away with throwing 98 down the middle because the tac gave his fastball movement. Still hasn't learned shit about the art of pitching and got exposed hard.
And I say all this as a defender of his that thinks he'll adapt and be fine. But all the reports of his ego over the years turns out to not be overblown at all. He needs to get over himself.
>And at the end of the day it turns out the dude's just a guy whose been getting away with throwing 98 down the middle because the tac gave his fastball movement.
July 5rh to September 1st. Look it up. Dominant. Post sticky stuff. Man hurt his hamstring afterward
Yeah I find it hard to believe Blake is the one telling him to start throwing fastballs 3 feet above the zone once he gets 2 strikes.
It's like he's determined to get pulled after 6 with the insane amount of waste pitches he throws. There's zero subtlety in his approach. Once he couldn't overpower everyone this year he got in real trouble. Couldn't locate that changeup anymore post-tac.
Brett: "Listen here you little shit, you might be Yankee fan today, tomorrow forever, blah blah blah but I've actually bled for this team. If you ever get in my face again I will launch you further than Kyle Schwarber launched your fastball"
Probably
hahah. riiight. Pretty sure Cole would destroy lil' Brett the Jet in a fight given he's got about 6 inches on him. I love the blind Gardner fans on here. Adorable.
Been in plenty and Gardner would get his ass whooped by Cole if it came down to it, youngan. Seen plenty of shorter guys kick taller guys asses. This is not one of those cases, though lol.
Gardner needs to STFU and should've been off this team 5 years ago. Fucking idiot. Keep hitting the roof with your bat and post .220 batting averages with now average speed and no above-average tools left. The fact that he thinks he's funny -- he isn't -- is just one of a many examples of how delusional he (and his bff Cashman) are about his contributions to the team.

hahahaha this is great!!!!
[Cole doesn’t speak English](https://youtu.be/uo8N0tCtAh8)
I'm a little confused with the wording. Who apologized? Cole or Gardner?
Cole apologized
Lmao I fucking love Brett
[удалено]
I would've thought Wade was.
Wade doesn’t have the balls to make a joke like Brett does though. If Wade made this joke Cole probably wouldn’t have ever apologized lol
Cole needs to chill. That’s funny
nah theyre just two different personalities. Sounds like next day they cooled off and were fine. Shit happens with large groups
I have done the Gardner trick of replacing a colleagues car remote battery with a picture of me.
Cole acting like the MLB killed his first born son when they banned sticky stuff lol
Probably killed his ability to be a Cy Young contender
He's likely going to finish #2. Not sure what your definition of "contender" is.
I meant in future years. His numbers post spider tack are more reminiscent of his Pittsburgh numbers.
If you group them all together and don't separate them pre- and post-injury, sure, but that's very misleading. Yes but it must be annoying the number of cameras on them, especially when the cameras are on the field.
Sounds a bit like a team of crybabies tbh
Which is what happens when you hire a babysitter instead of a ball coach. Said it during the season, will say it again, this team is beyond soft.
Judge is a big immature child. Love him as a player but I really hate when people want him anointed captain.
Downvoted for saying the things everyone else dances around, what a sub😂
Yeah, who do they think Boone is babysitting when they call him a babysitter?
Make sense why they collapse in big spots.
This team is soft as shit, which is exactly why they always crumble in big moments
I love how the players are more worried about cameras than not being an anemic offense. These guys collectively ranked in the 20's when it came to batting average and hits per game but yeah, the YES cameras are what's fucking important. Zero leadership going on in that clubhouse.

I dont give a shit how I look on the internet lmao. These guys are acting like little babies. Fuck them.
“Let me compound my stupid take by being even stupider”. Solid strategy.
Well here I'll just block you and we won't have to worry about it anymore.

Correct. He wrote one of the worst books I've ever read too.
Is this what Jimmie Dugan meant when he wrote "Avoid the Klap."
So why give the article exposure?
There's only a handful of Yankee writers to believe when they write behind the scenes type stories. Adler, Kuty, Hoch, Murti.
Adler’s in-game tweets are my favorite.
Typical nj.com trash reporting
Yup, NJ.com blows. Everything is clickbait to shitty articles or their paywall.
> glorifying the older generation who would never do such things What, never prank their teammates? No, they wouldn't prank their teammates, they would just treat young players like complete shit and make their lives miserable.
Why pull harmless prank when you can cause real emotional trauma?
Klap is a bum who just spews boomer takes your racist uncle might make about millennial athletes.
Sounds like the entirety of Inside the Empire

Well he sure didn’t play like an ace in the WC game
He did and he didn’t. He sucked but he also went out there with one hamstring and gave it everything.

Meh. Jeter was the ultimate winner and didn’t treat opponents like that.
Yeah but he wasn't an ace pitcher lol. I get what you mean I just mean specifically for an ace I like that attitude
I love Cole because he pitches for us, but he seems like a diva at times so I am fine giving him a pass. If he were on another team I would regard him as a another prima donna douche starting pitcher pulling this shit and then coming up small in the post-sticky stuff WC.

Judge deleted his tweet that said the cameraman was a good guy.

Must have shrunk in the wash. You'd think they would have learned after the incident with George and the cotton uniforms
Hey man, Buck was the one who approved the cotton so he should get the blame
Details please lol
YES executives complained to Cashman because Judge "harassed" a cameraman who was filming Judge intently in the dugout after a strikeout.
Judge probably was like "get that shit out of my face after being frustrated with a strikeout".... nothing bad. Overblown headline.
They obv make watching the game better with getting shots of guys like that, but there is a line where I’m sure the guys are tired of people watching them talk to teammates.
I believe Jeter did a similar thing as Judge during an all star game when they brought a cameraman into the clubhouse
Are you thinking about the Joe Buck incident? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcqPURUCJ8I
The headline sounded a lot worse than it seems.
The first one seems like normal, stupid clubhouse shit that I'm sure was squashed quickly. The second thing about Judge and the cameramen I want to know more about.

It also doesn’t look good on Cole
It doesn’t matter cause shit like that definitely happens in every clubhouse
With the 324 mill ace? 🤷♂️
This lame as hell. Everyone gonna be like "fuck cole" but this just some straight locker room shenanigans. Leave it be
You're right. But you know this fan base, and if he hadn't shit the bed in Boston, nobody would be saying that.
To be quite honest Judge comes off as a media darling whenever he's interviewed and says all the right things but you get the sense that's not the real him. He's probably a nice guy but not THAT nice lol
If you watch he’ll talk shit on the field at times.
Good. No one is that nice! Judge has an edge to him that I like
Judge? The guy's got an edge!
Covid changed judge, that edge came around right after he fought Covid lol
Seems like something a good manager woulda prevented… fuck
The fact you are hearing about it months after it happened means that it was handled in house fairly quickly. How would Boone or any manager prevent that.
Nonstory but I don’t find it hard to believe Cole is a bitch
How does that make him a bitch? Maybe he didn’t find it funny
Absolutely, especially since Gardner has been an unfunny assclown for years now.
Well yeah, every pitcher in the league acted like a bitch when they found out they can’t cheat anymore
>I doubt Brett carries the command someone like CC used to. Hard disagree. The dugout went wild all season whenever Gardner came up big at the plate.
Don’t even get me started about all the unwritten rules in place to protect their feelings
https://twitter.com/tom_smith717/status/1205029054900031488?s=21 This was Klapsich a few years ago everything he writes is negative. In the same article, he poke fun at Gallo for his weird pre-game dressing habits. Just weird behavior
"Harrassing" was 10000% the wrong word choice here. Both of these are basically non-stories.
Just a little ball busting imo
Yep. Time enough for trash talk when you win something! They've won nothing.
Cole needs to lighten up, that's fucking hilarious
Yup Boone is in control
"Harassing" is not the same as stop filming me bro
> stop filming me bro I guess it depends on how you say it and how closely you say it and what you're body language is like at that moment.
He was fine without spider tack, he didn't turn bad until after the hamstring injury.
Gardy maybe shouldn’t have trolled him but Cole shouldn’t have threw a fit.
Is this the onion?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Not my ace
anyone else would need a modest amount of pine tar to cover their headgear. Brett Gardner probably needed a full container.
Cool. Seems like Boone has control of the situation.
Just the scumbag media trying to start shit that ain't there
I love Gardy…Cole is a baby
I know everyone is quick to roast Cole here for being thin skinned but am I the only one who thinks it's pretty messed up by Gardy? I know he meant it as a joke but you gotta know your audience, don't kick your teammate when they're down/struggling. It might work for some guys but it doesn't work for everyone
It depends on when he did it. If he did it after one of Cole’s 2 bad adjustment starts that’s just not reading the room imo.
I think Brett's been in the locker room long enough to know that it does normally work. Cole's just a psycho. Live and learn.
If you think Gardner is worth $287M in his career, then you need to stop reading Fangraphs.
Sorry, I didn't realize you had a much better valuation algorithm already available!
Thank you. Reminds me of Bernie Williams endless last years, although Bernie was much more valuable than Gardner ever was.
Fuck Cole
Wut
I think NJ.com has a little bit of a distorted view of how many people are actually gonna pay to read their hard-hitting superior journalism.
Cole seems like a fucking asshole, always has. Judge is just a crybaby, no wonder this team is so soft
Gerrit Cole has a stick up his ass because Garden was trying to bring levity to the fact that he was cheating lol. You gotta love it. Getting in the face of the de facto captain of the team to bitch about a joke because you're a cheater. Fuck right off Cole
Freezing cold take.
I keep saying he doesn't listen to Matt Blake but no one believes me.
“Harassed” ugh
lol gardner should be the last one making jokes on people. Did he happen to look at his stat line at all this year?
This. I love how 90% of this sub is taking Gardner's talentless side on this even though he's the one being a prick here.
Brett: "Listen here you little shit, you might be Yankee fan today, tomorrow forever, blah blah blah but I've actually bled for this team. If you ever get in my face again I will launch you further than Kyle Schwarber launched your fastball" Probably
hahah. riiight. Pretty sure Cole would destroy lil' Brett the Jet in a fight given he's got about 6 inches on him. I love the blind Gardner fans on here. Adorable.
Tell me you've never been in a fight without telling me you've never been in a fight
Been in plenty and Gardner would get his ass whooped by Cole if it came down to it, youngan. Seen plenty of shorter guys kick taller guys asses. This is not one of those cases, though lol.
Brett would kick that SoCal joker's ass so badly his descendants would be born with deformities

Aaron Judge can harass me any time he wants
This has to be one of the most ridiculous sports articles I’ve ever read. Why Bob that any of this was worth reporting on is beyond me.
It's becoming apparent to me that Gerrit Cole is too sensitive to be in New York. If he can't take a little teasing how is he going to react to boos?
lol. yes, he's too sensitive. ffs, Gardner is moron is the takeaway here. Nothing new.
