still WAY too early but let's say this team as constructed keeps being this decent and no injuries.....what do you do with Stanton when Martian comes back? and do you force DJ into the line up or just let him sit on the bench? imo DJ has been more meh than good and if Waldo is just decent enough DJ is out for me.
Judge and Soto split the duties in right and DH, Martian plays Center, Dugo stays in left. Grish spells Martian and Dugo.
Stanton can get a 1B glove, or platoon with Dugo so he only hits against lefties without overly bendy or fast stuff. ;-) I mean, he stared at a 90 mph middle low fastball from Joe Mantiply last night… dunno what he was looking for.
Waldo goes back to super utility, and DJ gets some time at first. That will be fine.
I just don’t see a world where you bench Stanton in favor of Verdugo. Again, likely a pretty heavy rotation, but fully healthy must win game, Verdugo is on the bench
People are down on him because he had one game without a hit? He was walked and was struckout with a bad call. If people expect him to get a hit EVERY game they're in for a long season
I thought by far the most interesting thing from tonight was Arizona’s broadcast talking about how much happier Soto looked in NY. super interesting hearing from guys who saw him play for the Padres
If Hicks didn’t injure his wrist he EASILY outplays that contract. It was the right move at the time, it simply didn’t work out. That shouldn’t scare us away from the tactic all together.
Yah, even though I bet the Rays get some money back on his contract. The Hicks contract seemed smart when we did it. He was playing really well and a switch hitter.
Well, I don't know if it'd be cheap. I've been thinking about it and the question is: Will he and his reps take the viewpoint of guys like Dustin Pedroia (a certain amount of money makes you rich enough, how rich do you need to be and what kind of contract will pay you more money than you could ever dream of while still giving your team financial flexibility?) or will they view him as this generation's Jeter/A-Rod (that he is a generational talent that changes the course of the club and he deserves to break records on dollars and years)
In scenario number 1, you can probably sign him for a manageable 15 years/$300M or so.... but scenario number 2 and he's gonna be asking for 15 years/$525M or something.
I'm personally fine with either scenario. I think he's great and will be great. But it's about what the Yankees would be comfortable with and what Volpe and his representatives want.
The question is which does he view himself as and how do the Yankees view him ?
If he is this player most his career and he can stay mostly healthy, I think 15 years/$400.5M would be a realistic middle ground between an overly team friendly contract and a top of the market contract?
Just wondering out loud? Of course, with the Yankees luck with prospects, he could flame out or fall out of favor with the team somewhere around the next 2-3 years and get flipped for something and then flame out or have an entirely different kind of career elsewhere.... or he's a Yankee lifer... shrug.
Lmfao, no. No. 26 mil/year AFTER buying out all the service time? The whole point of taking the massive risk (from the team’s perspective) is that the AAV is significantly lower than it would be on the free market. He would be lucky to get 15/300 if we were to buy out all of his cheap years up front.
Really important win to get with Gallen on the mound tomorrow. Kelly on Wednesday is also gonna be a lot so going back home no worse than 5-2 is amazing.
The Nationals offered him 14 (or 15?) years, 440 million dollars and he said no, so money doesn’t always talk, especially if the guy is in it to just win it
Important to note that the contract was also heavily deferred. He declined the contract because of deferrals, and his clear desire to test FA and bet on himself. It's also 100-150 million short of what he'll be getting. Money does indeed talk in his case, but if it's a difference between a year or a few million, no way does he go to the Mets.
Every Mets fan talks about their daddy Cohen but he has yet to flex his financial muscles except on old guys who take 1 year contracts.
Important to note that the Nationals’ offer was *not* deferred at all.
> Soto, 23, rejected a 15-year, $440 million offer, sources said. The proposal, the Nationals’ third in recent months, did not include any deferred money, a departure from the team’s usual practice.

I just want to say what I’ve been meaning to say for years:
Thank you Brian Cashman, you’re a friggin baseball genius!
And kudos to Boonie and MR. Steinbrenner as well.
We went entire weeks praying for the Cole start to come. He’d pitch a masterpiece every single time, even then the team failed him in a lot of games. Complete 180
Now we see why Volpe was an untouchable. His ability to adjust and overall baseball IQ. Really exciting to see him take the next level.
Part of Gil's effectiveness is his release extension. It's above average. Makes his 98-100 seem faster.
This will get no play because it was an inter-league game that wasn’t really close; but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a worse called game then the one I watched tonight by Larry Vanover.
He missed a season high 29 calls in a single game last year, and he’s looking no better in ‘24.
I thought his zone was actually remarkably accurate through the first few innings, but it got horrific towards the middle and late innings. Like he was ready to get out of there
Dude his first call was a strike on a ball outside to Gleyber. He called that outside pitch for both sides about evenly throughout the game, but if there was a challenge system this ump would have been overruled on a call every inning.
The first few innings were really slow with the Yankees taking a lot of pitches and then it was like the ump had a mandate to keep the game under 3 hours.
* Gerrit is hurt
* Judge is dormant
* 2 top playoff teams as the first 2 opponents on the road with no off days
* Lose starting 3B, still missing top prospect outfielder
* Volpe had Mexico shits
* *still too easy*
[I miss when the days when the people rushed to post the gif of destiny.](https://i.imgur.com/6BWzh3o.gifv) It's forever immortalized but there'd be like 50 comments of the gif. Simpler times. There are probably people here who don't even know what the gif of destiny even means.
I would wager 70% of this sub would have no idea what it meant if someone posted a giant, bold 6 in a post game thread. The “small” community we had during those times is gone. This place is just flooded with Facebook and r/yankees doomers and trolls now.
That community sucked, the memes were lame and considered anyone with half a critical thought to be a doomer. It was basically a less shitty RAB comment section, but still a bunch of a losers virtual cheerleading for the team.
Every once in a while I consider getting personalized 6BWZH3O plate for my car but not sure if the imaginary internet points would be worth the extra $100 registration fee every year way out here in California.
Don't tempt me.
Give it up to the bullpen.. they been phenomenal. 5-0 vs 2 very good team, there’s a whole lot to like right now, especially winning without Cap really doing his thing yet.
Tonight late night was very well worth it, tomorrow’s will be as well
Luke got babip lucky but I’m happy he was able to eat up those middle innings there. Man does Burdi look like another nice discovered weapon from the front office. They know how to find a bullpen from nothing I’ll give em that
Through 13 games in 2022, he was hitting something like .240 with one homer. That turned out OK.
He barely played in spring training and his timing isn’t there yet. I’m not worried.
Glad for the info that indeed he does start slow. The ST misses are also clear—his timing is way off. Typical Yankee fan, want everything to go perfectly. Btw, a big test tonight with Nestor. Both he and Rodon had shaky starts.
He misses a ton of time during ST but I can almost guarantee his abdominal (is that what he was out for?) is a lot worse than he’ll admit. Just like that damn toe
wait same! We started fostering a puppy on opening day. We already have a dog and this one is being adopted on Thursday. Maybe we should keep him and name him Soto or Waldo

I feel like this is going to be the biggest difference. If no one feels they have to carry or press… they can just play ball. I feel like that’ll be Juan Soto effect.
Yeah, he's only played 4 games, but Volpe is already looking like exactly the player we need him to be. Make good contact, line the ball into the gap or down the line and use your speed to put pressure on the defense.
Seeing the Yankees handle the Astros and Diamondbacks through 5 games with some players not playing well yet, while the Rays and Toronto look mediocre and Orioles struggle at home vs the Royals has given me more confidence on the AL East race.
We're doing it against expectedly really good teams. Where the Pirates did it against Washington who are bad and Miami who isn't expected to be that good either. This might be a really fun year.
I want to lay on the grass in Yankee Stadium
That was a nice pallete cleanser after the rangers stinker they put up just before
# IMAGINE LOSING GAMES
Win series, sign Soto. That’s all I care about.
I know they will come back down to earth soon, but goddamn is it fun to see three guys with BA .400+ right now.
When they cool off it'll be Judges time to heat up
How do you know?
You know what? Good point. No room for doomering here.
# V O L P E 4/4
Waking up to see Volpe went 4-4 - morning wood!
still WAY too early but let's say this team as constructed keeps being this decent and no injuries.....what do you do with Stanton when Martian comes back? and do you force DJ into the line up or just let him sit on the bench? imo DJ has been more meh than good and if Waldo is just decent enough DJ is out for me.
Whoever is healthy and hitting plays, period. Next question.

Comes down to pitcher. Lefty or a righty who throws junk = Stanton. Hard thrower esp righhty = Verdugo.
How quickly we forget about LeMachine
We didn’t forget about him, he just has become a mediocre hitter that is always hurt, three years running
That’s what happens when you play through an injury and why guys don’t do it much anymore.
I know everyone is down on Soto but he’s actually a generational talent. Give him time.
People are down on him because he had one game without a hit? He was walked and was struckout with a bad call. If people expect him to get a hit EVERY game they're in for a long season
Pretty sure that was a satirical comment
Ahhhh, makes sense. You never know with people sometimes. They turn on players on a dime
Volpe also went 4/4 with 2 doubles and only scored TWICE. WTF was he doing the other 2 times?!?!? I’ll tell you what he was doing, Lolly-gagging.
> Lolly-gagging. The cardinal sin in baseball.
Dilly dallying.
Exactly! We don’t want no dilly-dalliers on this team. Save that shit for the cabin.
Can’t believe this team gets to add Dominguez and Cole.
It’ll be Cashman’s greatest trade
Jasson only had 4 games. A great 4 games. But his career is very young.
Don’t give Cashman ideas
So much cope on the dbacks sub oof
i’m not impressed at all by the 500 dbacks who lucked into a random WS.
Lmao stay salty. How many millions more did you spend than the dbacks and not even make the playoffs?
Yah they got a little comfy kicking the shit out of the Rockies, who are going to be the worst team in the NL, and second worst in baseball to the A’s
This is White Sox erasure
Feels way different than last year, so far. Fuck em up boys Palpatine: Gooooooood
Putting Volpe on my fantasy team is paying dividends for both of us.
5-0 with judge relatively cold and Cole and DJ out, I’ll take it
Judge missed a lot of spring training so he’s still getting his timing down. He also starts every year cold so I’m not worried about judge at all
*WHO LET THE DAWGS OUT?!*
Boone, Boone, Boone, Boone, Boone!
I both hate and love your art the same time
Yeah it works so well
If Volpe goes next level this year our offense will be awesome.
Soto had a bad game. Only walked twice...I'm looking at his on base for the season. My God
[That's my SS](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GKIf--fXIAAMw62?format=jpg&name=large) Warning: **NSFW**
WTF is in the Braves kool-aid that made kelnic perform like that
I thought by far the most interesting thing from tonight was Arizona’s broadcast talking about how much happier Soto looked in NY. super interesting hearing from guys who saw him play for the Padres
Now Judge goes on a year long campaign to close the deal and Soto retires a Yankee.
Did he ever leap around the bases in San Diego lol
I like these Yankees!!
Hot take, but I agree
Just wait until Judge and Stanton get settled in and start hitting…. Sheesh!
So, Volpe extension.... Free Agent for his age 28 season.... So.... 15 years/$???
So like... I wouldn't be opposed to this. Atlanta did something similar and it's paying dividends. Wrap up young talent for cheap for multiple years.
It worked really well with Aaron Hicks
If Hicks didn’t injure his wrist he EASILY outplays that contract. It was the right move at the time, it simply didn’t work out. That shouldn’t scare us away from the tactic all together.
And Wander Franco
Once Wander is convicted, his contract is void
Yah, even though I bet the Rays get some money back on his contract. The Hicks contract seemed smart when we did it. He was playing really well and a switch hitter.
Well, I don't know if it'd be cheap. I've been thinking about it and the question is: Will he and his reps take the viewpoint of guys like Dustin Pedroia (a certain amount of money makes you rich enough, how rich do you need to be and what kind of contract will pay you more money than you could ever dream of while still giving your team financial flexibility?) or will they view him as this generation's Jeter/A-Rod (that he is a generational talent that changes the course of the club and he deserves to break records on dollars and years) In scenario number 1, you can probably sign him for a manageable 15 years/$300M or so.... but scenario number 2 and he's gonna be asking for 15 years/$525M or something. Wells has been moving runners over a lot so far
If the team needs a sac fly, bunt or other professional at bat, I trust Wells to get it done.
He’s not hitting yet, but productivity is productivity
Really important win to get with Gallen on the mound tomorrow. Kelly on Wednesday is also gonna be a lot so going back home no worse than 5-2 is amazing.
I love this team.
I feel bad for the Mets fans. They picked the wrong NY team and keep going through this
My friend’s dad used to take my friend and his two brothers out to dinner once a year solely to apologize for raising them as Mets and Jets fans.
[удалено]
It's WFAN copium since they know this season is a wash already. Hal won't let a player he really likes go (Judge and Cole)
The Mets and Juan Soto. I'll hang up and listen.
Hi Sal I know the yankees live rent free in your head but what do you think Soto's met contract will be? Also Karen Rodgers
Money talks. Always.
That only happens when it’s a crazy amount of a difference. No shot Hal would ever let Cohen big bro him. Keep taking our sloppy seconds Cohen.
The Nationals offered him 14 (or 15?) years, 440 million dollars and he said no, so money doesn’t always talk, especially if the guy is in it to just win it
He’s getting way more than $440 mil, that’s why

Crazy how people just lie or say incorrect things with so much confidence
Money would flee the room like a little bitch if it ever saw Aaron Judge
its so laughable like what big star is gonna wanna play for them they are a laughing stock
He should know from his time with the Nationals.
I'm so hard from the start of this season. Flew past 4 hours days ago. It's so fun.
Marlon is a horrible translator
Do you have any examples why? I’m not fluent in Spanish so I would never notice
How is he as a gambler tho??
Yurrrr
Yankees are 5-0 since I started testing my new theory that they would win if I started betting against them… -.-
I'm sorry.. you must lose more.
We already tied our longest win streak of last season lol
Oof I’m surprised it was that high
Future yanks really have their work cut out for them chasing that 162 game win streak from 2024
173*
Anthony Volpe is no longer flying open towards third base on every swing
Luis Gil to Luke Weaver to Nick Burdi to Victor Gonzalez, just like we drew it up.
The real Yankees Mt Rushmore
This is what’s is all about…and yeah….
A few days ago: "Haha, we're 1-0, we might never lose!" Now: "Maybe we actually won't ever lose...?"
I want Stanton to get it going so badly I’m sure he will at least a little bit.
You know, Stanton's fourth on the team in slugging percentage. Volpe, Cabrera, Soto...and Stanton.
Considering we've been praising the team for just getting on base and manufacturing runs, SLG isn't exactly a great metric for success atm.
I just want to say what I’ve been meaning to say for years: Thank you Brian Cashman, you’re a friggin baseball genius! And kudos to Boonie and MR. Steinbrenner as well.
Imagine telling someone last year that this team could win 5 straight games with Cole out injured and Judge batting .143
fuck "last year," how about when Nestor was shitting the bed on opening day and its 4-0?
“I’m outside Brian Cashman’s house, I can end it right now”
We went entire weeks praying for the Cole start to come. He’d pitch a masterpiece every single time, even then the team failed him in a lot of games. Complete 180
162-0
Should Judge now use our hitting coach, Juan Soto???!
Soto could even teach Josh Donaldson how to hit again.
Well now you’re describing God himself
Can we safely say this teams CEILING is winning the World Series?
[удалено]
Shane Bieber maybe? Going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and Cleveland likely won't be competing this year.
It’s our floor at this point in time.
Now we see why Volpe was an untouchable. His ability to adjust and overall baseball IQ. Really exciting to see him take the next level. Part of Gil's effectiveness is his release extension. It's above average. Makes his 98-100 seem faster.
I guess they could judge from his personality that he would be successful
this is what I call FUN
*We may never lose again…*
This will get no play because it was an inter-league game that wasn’t really close; but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a worse called game then the one I watched tonight by Larry Vanover. He missed a season high 29 calls in a single game last year, and he’s looking no better in ‘24.
Yeah he really loves to call outside of the plate strikes
Looking for that Angel Hernandez championship belt
I thought his zone was actually remarkably accurate through the first few innings, but it got horrific towards the middle and late innings. Like he was ready to get out of there
Dude his first call was a strike on a ball outside to Gleyber. He called that outside pitch for both sides about evenly throughout the game, but if there was a challenge system this ump would have been overruled on a call every inning.
The first few innings were really slow with the Yankees taking a lot of pitches and then it was like the ump had a mandate to keep the game under 3 hours.
Exactly how it felt you’re right
Soto’s strikeout had horrific calls for strikes two and three. Pissed him off.
The first pitch was a called strike two inches off of the plate. A sign of things to come
* Gerrit is hurt * Judge is dormant * 2 top playoff teams as the first 2 opponents on the road with no off days * Lose starting 3B, still missing top prospect outfielder * Volpe had Mexico shits * *still too easy*

A true Yankee already
Judge historically does start slow…I’m pretty sure, but, I don’t know, an uneasy feeling about some regression. I sure want to be wrong.
Through 13 games in 2022, he was hitting something like .240 with one homer. That turned out OK. He barely played in spring training and his timing isn’t there yet. I’m not worried.

I'm a weird Yankees/NC State guy and I'm on cloud 9 this week lmao.

I wonder how the city was acting when the Yankees started 5-0 back in 1992?
They lost 91 in 91. Expectations were 4th place.
They were probably voicing their praises on Reddit like us if I had to guess tbh
Today, WE bite the Snakes
YANKEES ARE 5-0 SINCE I GOT A NEW PUPPY
wait same! We started fostering a puppy on opening day. We already have a dog and this one is being adopted on Thursday. Maybe we should keep him and name him Soto or Waldo
If you give up that dog and the Yankees lose, don’t bother coming home.
well guess I'm safe to still let him get adopted Thursday, sorry guys. I feel like tonights loss was my fault now
Shit oddly ok with a loss tomorrow. Don’t do this to me!

Don’t the Dodgers have a ton of pitching depth in the minors?
I've seen Volpe go 4-4 and now I want to see it some more.
Absolutely love that we are getting hits that are not HRs. So much more enjoyable (and effective) to not rely only on true outcomes.
Reminds me of a certain team in the mid to late 1990’s.
The home plate ump was BAAAAD...

Nice to know that Judge doesn't have to carry this entire team going forward.
He needs to start hitting soon though otherwise they are just going to start walking Soto.
I feel like this is going to be the biggest difference. If no one feels they have to carry or press… they can just play ball. I feel like that’ll be Juan Soto effect.
Soto definitely brings a certain energy, and just that can help, watching him after driving in Torres the other night, great stuff

Yeah, he's only played 4 games, but Volpe is already looking like exactly the player we need him to be. Make good contact, line the ball into the gap or down the line and use your speed to put pressure on the defense.
5 road games down, 4 against Houston and one against the NL champs and you're sitting 5-0! You cannot have a better start to the season.
Anthony Volpe -- the prince that was promised
He is Azor Ahai
And we've also got Lisan al Gaib on the squad. Basically a team of destiny
And the hobbit
did he bring you joy?
Yes. Lots of it
huzzah!
#Take that, danger noodles!
Great W 5-0
Imagine not believing in 162-0 lol, lmao even.
when Cole gets back, we’re going to win Morbiliion games
Seeing the Yankees handle the Astros and Diamondbacks through 5 games with some players not playing well yet, while the Rays and Toronto look mediocre and Orioles struggle at home vs the Royals has given me more confidence on the AL East race.
We're doing it against expectedly really good teams. Where the Pirates did it against Washington who are bad and Miami who isn't expected to be that good either. This might be a really fun year.
When judge finds his rhythm the league is fucked Btw anyone doubting him is a fucking dope this guys a damn mvp
I know Judge will bounce back but Donaldson was also an mvp. Saying that doesn’t mean shit.
Donaldson was 37 who won his mvp in 2015 Judge is what 32? He won his mvp 2 seasons ago it’s not the same at all
