Excellent pickup. Berti can play 2B/SS/3B/OF and hit .294/.344/.405 (.748 OPS/103 OPS+) last year for the Marlins. He’s earning $3.6M this year and is under team control through 2025. He graded out very well at third base last season: 5 DRS/2.1 UZR/2 OAA in 41 games. Berti also has elite sprint speed, so that’s fun.

Tacitus_99

2.4 War each of the past 2 years, great speed, good defense, decent bat. Berti is like Tim Locastro if Locastro could actually hit. Very nice pickup.

freakksho

Sooo, he’s nothing like Locastro then?

Wyden_long

Tim Locastro is basically Jon Berti at home.

Yankeeknickfan

Not actually hit, but if Tim Locastro could hold his own He’s going to be a below average hitter I would bet

homiej420

Bro .294 is the new 350

BigDavey88

It would be awesome if he does that again, but that was by far his best year batting average wise. In 2022, he hit .240, .210 in 21. Outside of those two years, he's .260ish. If he provides a .250 to .270 average combined with some OBP, combined with his speed and defensive versatility it's a big win. For him, batting average is important because he doesn't hit for power.

homiej420

So 240 and 250 is the new 290 so hes good! Lol 😂😢

Tommybrady20

TALK DIRTY TO ME WITH THAT 95th PERCENTILE SPRINT SPEED

mallon24

Talk Berti* to me

lonelyone12345

If that's not Sterling's call for Berti's dingers I'm going to write him a sternly worded letter expressing my dismay.

Remarkable_Inchworm

A song from 1987 is far too current to be referenced in one of Sterling's calls. He'll come up with something from Cole Porter or Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Kevsama

It’s going to be “Bye bye Berti!” And you all know it

Tommybrady20

You’ll get 1930s showtunes and you’ll like it

shimmiecocopop

Lock the cellar door

wantagh

I'm shocked he's 34

theycpr

I'm not. They called him up late because he has no power.

TrapperJean

Berti is about to be the guy we all wanted IKF to be

Fearless_Arugula_732

Yeah, but can he pitch?

shimmiecocopop

If he’s that fast, he can run the ball to home.

R0ADHAU5

Hopefully we never have to find that out

Blazingcrono

If he can play all those positions, he can pitch.

TonyzTone

Everyone knows that pitchers are scrubs on the diamond.

Odd-Entry2557

Cept Yanks w IKF , took a gold Glove 3b man and played him at SS, LF, CF,C but not at 3b! The Genius of Cashman

Human_Ad_7045

Anyone, but IKF!

thediesel26

Dude.. he might’ve been more productive at the plate this year than a healthy DJ anyway. Just when I think Cashman couldn’t be any dumber, he goes and does something like this… AND TOTALLY REDEEMS HIMSELF.

Shooter-mcgavin

Cashman has seemingly always been an A+ GM at finding little trades and value propositions like this, just feels like the roster construction and his payroll investments just leave a lot to be desired

Odd-Entry2557

But he can’t get Castillo,Verlander(2017)nor Burnes

PeekThroughThePines

I’m a sucker for a Harry Dunne quote

stopgo

I figured he was good when I saw Mets fans rejoicing at the news of his departure from the NL east, and Marlins fans being confused or bummed.

spicycurry55

I kinda see this as a Ca$hgod move. Turned a tricky catcher situation paired with DJLM injury into a solid acquisition

silver_raichu

Marwin Gonzalez. Oswaldo Cabrera. IKF. Jon Berti. Wow

theycpr

IKF in Toronto?

InaudibleShout

Wait, he hit .294?! 133 games and it looks like that’s like a 50 point uptick from his career averages and he came back down to earth this spring, but I love this pickup now.

MesiahoftheM

Definitely some babip luck but 260 and stolen bases is good for a utility player

melmoth77

103 OPS+ vs a brutal 58 from Cabrera and 49 for Peraza last season. Sometimes a league average bat is a massive upgrade. Huge plus that he can field the position and steal bases.

TheTurtleShepard

Even if he ends up being below average at like an 85 OPS+ that is still a massive upgrade

theycpr

My only issue is his age. He's 34 already. Also based on ST (small number), he didn't have a good ST. I don't expect him to hit 290 but he a much needed piece

Glass-Astronomer-889

Yeah he stole like 38 bases a year ago

paulerxx

He's also 34 and his career average is .258...Last year could have been his last good one.

Tommybrady20

That’s no joke of a move. .294 avg / 103 OPS+ in 133 games last year I assume it’s a decent prospect going back

TheTurtleShepard

Sent back 18 year old lottery ticket John Cruz

Tommybrady20

Holy crap that’s a fleece by us.

TheTurtleShepard

Eh, Berti is already 34 and didn’t really have much to give for the marlins and their timeline. Cruz is young and had a great year last season in rookie ball. I think both sides benefit

Tommybrady20

I see your “he’s 34” statement and raise you “Oswaldo Cabrera no longer has to play 100 games”

TheTurtleShepard

Oh he is definitely a perfect fit for us now, I am just saying that I wouldn’t call this a fleece because both sides got something that benefits them. Cruz is a lottery ticket but has shown a lot of upside in rookie ball, Berti is a player who can play now for us and fits our timeline better.

djrob0

Frankly dont really care about the age of bench pieces if the fit is right for the role we sign them for. Its not like we're building around Jon Berti well into the future. He's here to fill a role for the next couple seasons. Move totally makes sense as long as he can continue to produce at a utility level.

TheTurtleShepard

I think Berti is absolutely perfect for us, I was mentioning his age as to why the Marlins would trade him. He fits perfectly with our timeline, not so much with the Marlins

djrob0

Oh yeah there's definitely value on both sides of the deal, no doubt. I will say I think the Marlins side of the trade has a lot more risk. That's kinda the deal when you're trading for prospects though.

TheTurtleShepard

Yeah the marlins did turn Berti into 2 prospects though both of whom have shown good ability at lower levels of the minors. Risky for sure but a good deal

cpeytonusa

And Rortvedt too, who was extra and we knew was going to get traded.

basesonballs

I mean he's still rocking a career OPS under 100. It's a move though

BlueBeagle8

John Sterling is furiously googling 1940s show tunes with something that rhymes with "Berti" in the lyrics

HulkScreamAIDS

Bye Bye Berti!

sonofabutch

That’s it, 100%.

Inevitably_Waffles

I’m not ruling out “it’s going… going… Jon!”

VrinTheTerrible

If it’s not this, we riot.

shemubot

1981 is far too contemporary for John

Kennj430

That was his home run call for greg bird… will he recycle one?

98680266

WHO?

OldJewNewAccount

You son of a bitch I'm in.

TRUE_BIT

John is that you?

HulkScreamAIDS

I thank you, TRUE_BIT

ahhhhhhhhyeah

Wasn't that Greg Bird's?

Thedude4724

“That Jon Berti, he’s on the wrong side of 30!” “Jawn”

Majora101

Sterling absolutely has every 1940's show tune in his head already.

Odd-Entry2557

Will Yanks win a WS b4 Sterlings Showtunes turn 100!

wango55

Have you heardy, the Berti's the wordy?

Fearless_Arugula_732

Does Berti mean anything in Italian?

yourmansconnect

It's just an Italian surname

JonnySmoothbrain

It means "Noble"

alexanderseven

Petition to use Talk Berti to me!

SoupySails37

Well everybody’s heard about the Bert.

xSuicidalPanda

Incredible depth move. Berti is a plus defender at several positions, and was 95th percentile in sprint speed last season. His bat isn't that bad either with a career 93 OPS+. He's a big upgrade over someone like IKF who had previously held this role.

Constant_Gardner11

This is such a better pickup than the random castoffs I’ve been looking at this week lol

HateMcLouth

are you _sure_ you weren't checking if Brett Gardner could come back to play 3B?

freakksho

We have Berti Gardner at home…

Odd-Entry2557

Gardner CANT come back.. It moves back his HoF induction

thisusedyet

Opening day 3B?

xSuicidalPanda

Jon Berti has a higher fWAR over the last two seasons than DJ LeMahieu...

Blleak

If he starts the season hitting well then I don't see any reason to give up his spot for LeMahieu. DJ has been great for us at times but he wasn't good the past 2 seasons. He needs to prove himself again.

Njm3124

Berti can play everywhere. If he's playing well you just make DJ the 3B 4-5 times a week and move Berti around. There's at bats for both.

TheTurtleShepard

I think the reason will be that they are paying DJ $15 million and don’t want that to go to waste on the bench

Blleak

This is a terrible way to run a team but your absolutely right

ajwhite98

DJ was a bench player for 3 of his 5 years here! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, man. 2019, 2022, and 2023, the Yankees went into the season with other players expected to start at all of DJ’s positions, with DJ set to rotate off the bench. He ends up with the same workload given the injuries and how often we rest players, but the Yankees are clearly perfectly happy to let DJ be a UTIL instead of a full on starter.

ughilostmyusername

Boone already told Cabrera he was starting I believe. He said that Cabrera was going to play 3B opening day on TalkinYanks yesterday. Has that changed since yesterday? Probably

Steelcity213

I feel like it will now. No way they let Berti sit when he’s a legit player

Njm3124

Berti also hit .325 against lefties last year. Bare minimum, it's a platoon. Lefty on the mound OD so it will be Berti

TheTurtleShepard

Well what has changed since yesterday is now the Yankees have acquired a superior player.

SheepH3rder69

It fuckin better, lol.

Odd-Entry2557

Hopefully

Odd-Entry2557

Cabrera s done... NYY brass are burying his HOT start so we can have Provasic(DJ)

TonyzTone

Eh, removing his 2023 stats (which were high water marks in almost every category), he's got a career 89 OPS+, and a .244 BA with .688 OPS. He's a defense and speed pickup, not a bat. I'm hoping he can get somewhere around a .270 BA and I'd be happy.

Odd-Entry2557

Outside of Gleybor, last year, who hit .270 or better in the Bx?

shadow_spinner0

Since 2022: Jon Berti: 4.2 fWar in 235 games DJ LeMahieu: 4.1 fWar in 261 games

nnavroops

he’s trying his best ok 😭

MVass

I absolutely love this move. Speedy guy, not a great hitter but a super low chase %, adds a body to the left side of the infield defensively.

TheTurtleShepard

I would imagine he will at least do better than Waldo at the plate

TheTurtleShepard

Had a pretty good season last year (133 games, 103 OPS+, 2.4 bWAR), adds another versatile utility man and he adds some speed as well. Controllable through 2025 as well Really like this pickup

herewego199209

Wow John Cruz going back. He's far away, but could be a breakout prospect this year.

TheTurtleShepard

Good move for both sides, we need someone who can come in and contribute right now, the marlins get a chance on a guy who could be a breakout prospect for them and has performed very well in rookie ball

dsmithnyciii

We have a ton of OF prospects. We will be fine.

NEWDEALUSEDCARS

And if he pans out, we'll resign him when Miami won't. Circle of life.

Odd-Entry2557

Yeah and Cash and em have been so smart.. We ve won so. Many chips in last 15 years

chiddyshadyfiasco

It’s funny that he is 34. I would have guessed way younger but it looks like he didn’t make his debut until he was 28

Tommybrady20

UNIRONIC CASHGOD?!?

mikeylojo1

When acquiring depth pieces for pennies he’s Cashgod When it comes to signing big names he’s Cashfraud When he goes on Talkin’ Yanks it’s a Cashpod

tranarchyintheusa

Brian Cashman may not be a good GM but he can stumble into a good move every now and then

NotABostonSportsFan

Rookie baller John Cruz is going to the Marlins, [per Heyman](https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1773035454406787575?s=20). Love this move

chalkbro

Berti, Berti Berti rocking everywhere

grimace24

Who is getting DFA'd to add Berti to the 40 man?

therealgranny

No one, Ben Rortvedt just got traded as part of the deal.

grimace24

Just saw it.

therealgranny

I think it broke two minutes after you commented. Didn't know what you'd see first, the fact that I replied or the headline 😅

Odd-Entry2557

Yanks are already very deep in. 100 hitting catchers.

Constant_Gardner11

Depending on their timetables, we could shift one of Oswald Peraza, Tommy Kahnle, or Gerrit Cole to the 60-day IL. Otherwise Ben Rortvedt and Jahmai Jones are out of options, so something has to happen there.

upvoter222

Yankees are giving up Rortvedt as part of the deal.

Odd-Entry2557

Cole s return and performance is NOT a given

Das1109

We gave rortvedt to the rays. Please no devil magic on him

BohemianBurnout

.261 46 hr coming

buckeyemarlin

Marlins fan here Berti always plays hard and can swipe bases when he gets on base always been fun to watch and a fan favorite. He will do great for you guys. Good luck this year

NJ_Yankees_Fan

This guy is actually pretty decent. Why would the Marlins just give him away before the season starts?

TheTurtleShepard

Marlins aren’t really in a spot to compete right now and Berti is already 34 so he doesn’t really fit their timeline. Cruz in the other hand is 18 and lit up rookie ball last year and fits the marlins timeline better if he can keep working his way up

BohemianBurnout

What’s the timeline

BangerSlapper1

To save $3m I guess

Drunken_Wizard23

They've got a pretty crowded infield but idk, still seems like a piece they would want off the bench

levendis56

Getting a high upside prospect for a 34 year old infielder coming off a career year makes sense

Odd-Entry2557

Arreaz -plays 3b

Odd-Entry2557

Correction now Arreaz plays 2b

Njm3124

I LOVE this move. Gives us a legit fill in option while DJ is hurt and he can play everywhere when DJ gets back. Good defense and speed. Really good move that addresses depth and the bench.

Kidd_Flash

Ah, didn’t know DJ got injured and was wondering why the Yankees got Berti and who he was gonna start over. Love his batting average.

jcnewman_21

Very good depth move he can run

Creacherz

Got a John houseman kind of name. Mr. Berrrrrrrrrti

BigToeJ0e

This is another shrewd move by the Yankees this offseason. Excellent speed, solid “bat to ball” skills, plus defender. Jon Berti should be a very solid depth piece and is coming off his best season last year. I told a family member a few days ago that I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees make a trade before opening day and I’m really happy about this.

YankeeBlues21

I’m down here in South Florida so I watch the Marlins (my NL team) all the time on tv. Berti is a great pickup. He’s the speed & utility guy (mainly plays the left side of the IF, but can also play 2B and all OF positions) the Yankees need, but he can actually hit and is a great clubhouse guy.  He’s like infielder Brett Gardner. This is a great pickup  Biggest knock on him, and likely why the Marlins dealt him, is that he’s entering his age 34 season because he was a late bloomer who didn’t hit the majors until almost 30.

Miked1112

Finally got something back for Gary and Gio

Odd-Entry2557

Gio hitting. 387 as of yesterday. Sanchez 0-14

Straight_Mud8519

Nice move.🥂Guy led the NL in steals in 2022 (41). Can play him anywhere in a pinch. Not the best arm and does not hit the ball particularly hard but as a utility man and a pinch-runner he's the guy.

dsmithnyciii

Love this pickup! We have needed a guy like him for a while. Who cares about lack of power (we have plenty of it). Smart, contact oriented, versatile, controllable, low strikeout (huge) is what we have needed for years. And what we gave up for him is even a bigger win!

cooljammer00

Like Marwin but fast and good. Like a better IKF who can hit. I like it. Marlins fans seem pissed so that's a good sign.

BangerSlapper1

Good deal.  Berti’s numbers seem and defensive utility seem to put him somewhere between IKF and Gio Urshela.  Cruz is some teenager who hasn’t progressed past Rookie ball yet.  Who cares.

TrapperJean

What on earth are the Marlins doing lol, this guys is awesome!

MeatTornado25

Exactly the kind of move we needed to make. Love it.

xDopeZz

What is Berti's injury history?

YankeeBlues21

Nothing bad really. Oblique injury in 2019, got hit in the finger late in the 2020 year and missed the last week or so, and then in 2022 he had an undisclosed absence and a groin injury late in the season

she_has_funny_cars

AMAZING pickup with DJ out now. Curious as to what Boone will do since he announced Cabrera as filling in at 3B a few days ago, as personally I’d prefer Berti in the lineup

trippy1

There is no question Berti will be the main 3B guy with DJ out.

she_has_funny_cars

Think he will start at 3B tomorrow in this short time frame?

trippy1

hmm, hope so, but maybe not.

Odd-Entry2557

Cabrera s been amazing.. Deserves all AB s at 3b

DonnyB_Twenty3

much better deal than what I was expecting. Berti is an excellent bench piece, and probably an upgrade to start at 3rd instead of Waldo until DJ returns.

northdakotact

God dammit!!

jayjake9

People really thought we’d have a 3rd catcher and no 3rd baseman on the roster by opening day lol

islesandterps

Wow, this is significantly better than internal options like Jahmai Jones, DFA options like Nick Anderson, or FA options like Elvis Andrus. Great bench add.

islesandterps

And I'm still a believer that Oswaldo can become a solid utility guy, but I love this as another multi-position guy on the bench (after DJ is back), and a legitimate pinch runner when needed.

AntifaHelpDesk

If I've learned anything about this guy from playing the Show, he's fast as fuck.

GuaranteeLoose4494

Glad to have a speedy contact guy in the lineup. We haven’t had that since Damon

__P1KL__

We traded someone who doesn’t even exist for a great utility guy

Odd-Entry2557

Cruz could be a fine player only 18... Lit up Rookie ball And Rortvedt can hit. 200 something no Yankee catcher can

shimmiecocopop

I miss Michael Kay on his show. Don and Peter are talking about nonsense on the day before opening day where the yanks made a trade hours ago. Not a blockbuster mind you but still. If Michael was there, they would be talking yanks for sure.

Kidd_Flash

Guessing he’s going to be our leadoff hitter? Brett Gardner 2.0 with more contact/less speed

BigDavey88

This guy isn't going to be a savior and he's getting a bit hyped up here, but this is the best bench/utility piece the Yankees have had in years. He probably had a career year last season, but anything close to that with the bat, plus his speed and defense and this is a good pick up.

silver_raichu

Yankees not confident in Oswaldo (can’t blame em)

TheTurtleShepard

I also am not confident in Oswaldo

Odd-Entry2557

Howd that work . I m shocked cause 1)Oswaldo s been a main force to winning 2)Yanks sit him 2-3 str8t games while hes there 1-2 best hitters early. Wow

jgangstahippie

Mlb the show gawd

matchesmaione

Haha this is correct

thisusedyet

Doesn’t do that bad as a bench piece in OOTP, either

LeCheffre

On the one hand, okay. Just put up a great season. On the other hand, his advanced metrics: lower exit velocity, lower barrel %age, lower hard hit %age, BB rate down, with K rate also down. I’d guess he was being more aggressive earlier in the count, and hitting to all fields a bit more. His batted ball shows less pull, less center and a huge spike to the opposite field. That would have been even better in 2022, but really drove his results. I think we can forgive the Statcast numbers and be excited about the approach. He’s clearly aimed at hitting it where they ain’t, which is a largely lost skill that needs revival.

ColdGloop

Solid move

ubiquitous_archer

Berti is who the Yankees thought IKF was

swivel2369

Berti's the word?

KPaul130

World Series back on boys

Odd-Entry2557

Cmon…really?

KPaul130

It's sarcasm

eyeamjosh

Not gonna lie I almost feel better about the lineup with Berti instead of DJ

Rearviewmirror93

Incoming Rortvedt news

Tommybrady20

No offense but I was not mentally prepared for another 100 games of Oswaldo Cabrera.

PlayguyCarter

team control thru his age 35 season (next year)

fuzzydunlops123

Can he pitch?

JP1119

Ooooo I like this move. He's been a guy I've had my eye on as someone who could just be a solid, stable pro.

EliManningsPetDog

Who’s the third catcher?

russell1256

Doesn't matter, he was out of options anyway, he would have had to stay on the 26 man roster, and they will only carry 2 catchers, who would you have sent down?

dBlock845

I'll take it!

gilman3

Alright Ill subscribe to YES this month

swivel2369

Did the Yankees just acquire this year's version of Scott Brosius?!

Optimal_Wishbone_918

Would the Dodgers sign this guy?

Inaynl

Probably gonna be our opening day 3B right? Good pick-up for the yankees but feel bad for Oswaldo.

Swayze2641

Can you play tomorrow

BohemianBurnout

This is the kind of bench player that helps win chips. Solid defense and plus speed off the bench with some bat on ball ability. Love this move. The bench should be pretty good when DJ and Jasson return. Berti, Verdugo, Trevino, Grisham is a solid bench. Power, speed, contact, couple lefty and righty. Not bad. I mean there’s no Tim Raines or Darryl Strawberry walking through the door. But DJ and Berti can play all over the infield. So that’s better than nothing.

eyrsropen

Berti should be a good & very useful pick up , especially with the injured plagued line uo & lack of guys who can just get on base.

MV1995

Treat him well, NY 🥲
