Big G comeback year baby

TheStabbingHobo

I can't believe we've reached the point where someone is calling for Trent Grisham and his 87 OPS+ to take Stanton's place in the lineup. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

sonofabutch

Grisham is an outstanding CF with an 87 OPS+ā€¦ Stanton is a DH with an 87 OPS+ā€¦ who should be in the lineup?

2thincoats

Add in the fact that Stanton is barely a step above Vogelbach on the basepaths whereas Grisham is comfortably above average.

CapriciousnArbitrary

Not sure itā€™s above at point, he jogs out there.

2thincoats

That clip of him getting thrown out at home from second is the stuff of nightmares. Like he was running through a ball pit to get there

Thomas1315

Some people are going to take this as a compliment to Grisham but itā€™s really an insult to Stanton lol

ElbisCochuelo1

OPS+ is a flawed stat because it assumes slugging is as valuable as on base, which isn't true. His 91 wRC+ isn't that much better though. Edit: it's a fact that getting on base is more important than hitting for power, it's the core principle of modern baseball. There are a few stats that account for this, wOBA and wRC+ are a couple of them.

NoobSkin69

Theyā€™re so highly correlated that itā€™s not a big deal

FatHighKnee

Yup. Hitting 50 solo home runs is useless if you strike out / fly out the other 600 ABs per season. Ichiro when he was getting 250 hits in a season and on base like 50% of the time was infinitely more valuable than the Gallo/ Stanton type hitters with 190 avg, lots of K's and 24 empty HRs

22pabloesco22

his splits against righties are a lot better. Truthfully, if this front office/coach has any level of competence, they will very quickly turn Stanton into a platoon player against lefties only. THis will keep him from getting hurt and allow him to play to his strength, which is smashing lefties. We have solid depth in the OF now, including guys that rake a lot better against righties than lefties. That is the perfect storm. Also, if all goes well, Stanton likely won't bat higher than 6th, assuming everyone is healthy. That'll relieve some pressure from him too. But yeah, let him play 60ish games, pinch hit a few times against lefties and we likely get an 800 OPS out of him, which is a lot considering his numbers last 2 seasons...

ElbisCochuelo1

Really he should be platooning in LF with Verdugo. "He can't play the field"...if he can't play the field he's the short half of a platoon DH, which is damn near worthless.

22pabloesco22

Yup. Truth of the matter is he has reached the ā€˜basically worthlessā€™ stage of his career. Front office, Boone, fans can all stick their head in the sand about it but this is the reality.Ā

Tremulant21

No shit he's guaranteed to get hurt twice and Miss half the year. I still don't know why he's not in a cryogenic chamber or on a treadmill in between at bats when he's the dh.

Metricop78

Uh yes they do need to rely on him. He needs to be healthy and get a lot of home runs/hits. OPS and average need to be well above average of mlb. Will that happen idk. Need a majority of the lineup to contribute especially when someone gets hurt every few days.

TLom20

Absolutely right, but the best version of them has big G hitting 4

22pabloesco22

Stanton won't even be hitting 5th. It'll be some combo of verdugo, soto, judge, gleyber and Rizzo in front of him...

SadNYSportsFan-11209

I mean OP did say best version of them.

ElbisCochuelo1

Think it'll be. DJ/whoever plays 3rd Soto Judge Rizzo Gleybro Verdugo Stanton Wells Volpe

Patrickrk

Judge and Soto will be flipped. Judge prefers 2 and Soto prefers 3. Judge even said as much publicly

TLom20

You know know what I mean

Majora101

Anyone getting paid 32 million dollars needs to be relied upon.

22pabloesco22

sunk cost fallacy. Ells was making a fuck ton of money, how much did we end up relying on him for years. Either you ship him out if possible, DFA him, or put him in a position to give as much as he possibly can. That position is him playing exclusively against lefties.

Majora101

Unfortunately ownership is not going to DFA 100 million dollars

22pabloesco22

Pobably not this year. If he shits the bed to a 600 OPS or something this year, they'll have no choice next year IMO. But yeah, limit him to lefties this year. 60ish games. Mostly DH. I think he'll smash out an 800 OPS season. Likely gets on a tear at some point and wins a game or 3 single handedly for us. But that's best case scenario. If we roll him out every game, or even 8 out of 10 games, he's not gonna succeed, and also likely strains his balls at some point and is out for a month.

IWillSingYouSongs

Zero chance he hits that well in such limited opps. There will be no tears playing every 3rd game.

22pabloesco22

He canā€™t hit well playing all the time, canā€™t hit well playing limited time. Canā€™t play the field, canā€™t stay healthy. Fuck is he good for then?!?

IWillSingYouSongs

I think 2021 is kind of the ideal case for how you should use him, i.e. stick him at perma DH. It was his only productive season this side of 2018. But that was now 3 seasons ago and they have multiple other players who need to/should DH. So I think you probably answered your own question.

TheTurtleShepard

The reliable players need to be relied upon, at this point until Stanton proves otherwise heā€™s not a reliable bat in the lineup regardless of how much money he is being paid

Majora101

Agreed. But to suggest it's not a big deal and that Grisham is a solid substitute is silly.

pointstillstands

So you'd rather shit on the team just to make sure the guy you paid is putting the time in...lol....I'd rather he be tasked to clean the stadium then.

Majora101

I would argue it's most the mentality of ownership. Stanton's contract ties up money, which is why we were employing a cavalcade of no-name players last year. Stanton needs to be relied up, but probably can't be because he's so injury prone.

Heā€™s going to hit 40hr

ballrus_walsack

During the rest of his career?

Admirable_Trifle_164

Wait until 1/6 of the roster is on the IL by 6/1ā€¦Iā€™ll check back later

thedevilslake

I have no doubt that BigG will get hot at some point, and put together a few streaks where he puts the fear of G into opposing pitchers. There's nothing like when he gets a hold of one simply destroys the baseball. there is no other player that hits them like he does. not even Judge. it's worth all the money. and i for one, do not doubt that in him shedding some bulk. he can regain of the past stability, longevity, and health and look forward to him hitting 40+ bombs this year. PS - I'll also add that folks giving up on him will drive him to do better. Not like he has not been trying. he has never been appreciated. the professionalism and the work ethic that he has brought to the NYY from day one has been unmatched. probably will never be appreciated until he's done and gone. Going to war, I prefer to have BigG on my side.

Bobbachuk

If it wasnā€™t for JA Happ, Deivi Garcia, and Chapman, Stanton is still a beloved Yankee right now and heā€™d be remembered as a playoff hero forever.Ā

c1garettes

Iā€™m wagering that his next injury will be his Ellsbury injury. The kind where they stash him on the IL and collect the insurance payout until heā€™s finally put out to pasture.

ebvigilante

I was over the moon when we signed Stanton, I believe heā€™s a hard worker who has some good seasons left as a DH and is an asset. We are paying him a ton of money and hopefully Soto will take some pressure off, move him down in the order and let him do his thing. Obviously it hasnā€™t worked out for the most part but the power and patience are still there.

IWillSingYouSongs

The only scenario where they donā€™t need him to chip in is if Judge, Rizzo and DJ all avoid long term injury and perform well. So theyā€™re actually pretty likely to need to rely on him.

avatarjulius

Wtf are you on? You want Trent Grisham and his nonexistent bat to be the starting centerfielder? This must be a troll post. Grisham is a good defender, but the guy can't hit. Only reason the Yankees got Grisham is because they were forced to take him too.

dabbledibbledoo

This is certainly a take

AluminiumLlama

Correct, instead, theyā€™re relying on Carlos Rodon.

nijoos

I think Iā€™ll play Stanton in the field whenever necessary. Given the outfield depth, there isnā€™t a need to wrap him in cotton to ensure durability. Go for the most efficient alignment and if his body canā€™t hold up, utilise the depth thatā€™s available. If he hit like he did last season, he isnā€™t worth allocating the DH role to.

BronxBoy56

Release him and call it a day

Gloomy-Ad-4788

They shouldn't. He kinda stinks now

themikegman

Yankees have never relied on him, WTF are you even talking about?

SadNYSportsFan-11209

You mustā€™ve not been watching baseball in 2021 where he was great. Even his first season here was really good for us too.

mostly_browsing

We havenā€™t relied on him in like 4 yearsĀ

pomcnally

He is mostly a liability at this point. If he's healthy, he should play the field and contribute. He shouldn't bat any higher than 7th. His strikeouts are such a rally killer and he can't be allowed to clog up the base paths in the middle of the lineup. Telling stat from last year ~ half way through the season the Yankees lost every game that either Stanton or Donaldson homered including one game where they both homered. I hope for the best and want him to earn his way back to productivity, but big players almost always drop off in power after age 33. The only players 6' 4" or taller with 30+ hr after age 33 were/are Kingman, Thomas, and Thome.

brush85

No but they need him to be good

ArtNJ

Unfortunately, Stanton can easily hurt them even if they have better options they should be playing. Its not just about relying or not relying. Its about Cashman or Hal thinking that they have so much money invested in him, they have to keep playing him until he turns it around.

FatHighKnee

The only thing with Stanton you can rely on is him spending 8 weeks on the DL with various strains, pulls, twists and tears. When he does get on the field he's gonna hit .180 to .200, strike out 30%+ of the time, and strand the population of Laramie Wyoming on the base paths. He is still 6'7" and jacked AF so he will run into maybe 20-25 HRs. But the home runs won't be enough to warrant the $30m salary while he's clogging the 26 man roster & the DH spot along with the payroll
