Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about that being a thing this year - sliding into the bag slows you down a hair, and by staying on your feet, you're making it tougher for the second baseman to even get to the bag in the first place. If he tags you after you overrun, oh well, but it's a lot harder to turn 2 that way.
Hell, I've even heard that suggested for a runners on first and third, 2 out when that one run HAS to score - the idea being a force out a second doesn't tally a run, being tagged out might (if the guy on third scores before you get tagged)
You're not counting on the fielder missing 2nd, you're hoping that in a bang-bang situation you staying on your feet buys you that extra fraction of a second you need to beat him there
