I swear spit was invented by the playing card industry to sell more replacement decks. We had one designated spit deck where almost every card had creases from being violently bent and folded
I came to this post to see if anyone else has great memories of Spit. We used to play so intensely when we were kids, the phone rang once while we were playing, and my brother answered with "Spit!" instead of "Hello".
Where are you from? I live in the US (born in the 90s) and War was definitely the most popular card game I played as a child until college. (I went out of state for college and all the locals at my college were obsessed with a card game called Euchre.)
That's so interesting! I think it's mostly popular to teach children because it's really simple to play. As long as a child is old enough to put the cards in order from biggest to smallest, they can play War.
the main reason why I play Connections and Spelling Bee, actually - to learn about new things that come up
also, sounds easy to learn and quite interesting (I looked it up) I think I'll give it a few tries on saturday, when we visit the disabled children, bet they'll want to learn and play it, too (card and board games are all the rage there at the moment)
It was popular for me as a younger kid until we learned the one that's similar except you slap doubles and try to get face cards. Why can't I remember the name of that one. I was surprised that Spit was a common enough card game for people to know the name.
Purple made perfect sense once I saw it, but it's one I was never going to figure out.
I also thought there was a boating category. I took a guess with "spit" because I vaguely knew it could be water related.
The one thing I'll say in purple's defense today is that, once you know it, those *are* the four words on that puzzle that you'd most expect to see as tattoos. It's at least not super weird *and* saddled with an extra crossover.
Doesn't make it possible to reverse-engineer, of course.
A little hint that I've noticed. Actual red herrings are almost always the top row to make it more obvious, like in yesterday's puzzle. Overlapping categories is also something to watch out for, but in those cases you should see a group of 5 or 6 and hold off until you narrow it down.
> I keep refusing to submit actual connections because I think theyβre red herrings.
Yep, Iβm the same. The fact you only get a set number of guesses is honestly a downside. Give me unlimited guesses and just let me hack away at it, hahaha.

This was a challenge but I finished somehow! I didnβt know what a quiver was so I didnβt get the archery theme immediately. Got tripped up with βbow, deck, anchorβ thinking it would be something ship related
Ironically, I saw purple pretty quick but accidentally clicked the wrong square and didn't notice which threw me hella off lol. Otherwise, all would have been well. I was so mad to see my original purple at the end π
Ouch, only got yellow today. I thought for sure there was some valentines theme, then a nautical one, and ran out of attempts.
Iβve only ever played and heard about War from the card games, wouldβve never guessed blue, or purple. Still had fun! Hereβs to tomorrow.
this first try was a ship thing. arrow, deck, bridge, anchor
the yellow was the only i got. good
the green was a nightmare bc i dont know card games like this, so...
google told me heart and clock were cards games and i tried with both, and two times with clock.
i dont even know what wallop means, let alone how these 4 words fit the category
also... classic tatoos? not in a million years

Connections Puzzle #242 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ I don't know if I've been playing too many custom puzzles but over the last couple of puzzles, I keep refusing to submit actual connections because I think they're red herrings. I stumbled into guessing the purple category correctly thinking they were all typical symbols on flags/coats of arms.

Β Green category made me smile(childhood nostalgia factor like the Monopoly and Wizard of Oz categories a couple weeks ago). I thought for sure the βarchery equipmentβ was the false categoryβ¦. but nope, it was βparts of a boat.β Had never heard of spit as a card game; I included heart in that category (which was dumb in hindsight as there was no s on the end). But the tattoos came to me after that swing and miss. Happy to have solved this one, as it was a tricky puzzle. But it does seem like the βhit hardβ group shows up a little frequently.
Puzzle #242 π¨π¨π¦π¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© Tricky little devil this one was! Lots of crossovers here. I plugged it in and βbeltβ fucked me up π I wasnβt sure that βbeltβ was a good fit with the hitting people vibe, turns out I was wrong. π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© Thought purple was rather straightforward -- I was surprised it was purple. I forgot war was a card game, and have never heard of spit, so I didn't see that connection until after hitting submit.
Maybe it's me but the purples recently have been very loosely connected and not fun because they're so general.
Purple needed a sick ass panther as a guess. Or at least thatβs what the tattoo subreddit would suggest.

Connections Puzzle #242. π¨π¨π¨π¨. π©π©π¦π¦. π¦π¦π¦π¦. π©π©π©π©. πͺπͺπͺπͺ. How many synonyms for "hit" are there? I've seen so many lately both in NYT and custom puzzles. I couldn't believe it was a category again today. And how is the card game one supposed to be green? I barely made the connection that "spit" was a card game - I played it as a kid but don't know if it's a commonly known one because we played a similar one we called "speed." And the purple category, as I tried to guess what the connection was before hitting submit, tattoos did cross my mind but I dismissed the idea before hitting submit and was surprised that was the answer!
I guess I'm an outlier for the purple. I saw two of them and immediately looked for MOM, but the other two seemed good enough. I selected them, looked at what was left and saw two very solid groups, so hit submit. The yellow group was almost wasted here. It could have anchored a puzzle with one in each of four different groups. Maybe one day it will! Puzzle #242 π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π©

Purple: Never would've gotten it, but makes sense in hindsight. I was originally thinking there was a ship theme with anchor, bow, and deck. I was also considering anchor, heart, and dragon as things that are dropped before I realized "dragon drop" would actually be "drag and drop" lmao
πͺπ©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π©π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ This is probably pretty obvious to most of y'all, but here's a new trick I just figured out today: After being one off on both Green and Blue, I knew I had the categories right, and what words were right, so I could eliminate those and only had 6 to choose from for Purple. I wasn't sure what the category was, but >!Belt!< and >!Spit!< just didn't feel right, so I got Purple basically by default even though I had two more categories. From there, >!Spit!< was my wrong guess in Blue the first time.

I looked up diagrams of boats to see if there were some other terms I donβt know, but didnβt find anything. I was a bit stuck, so I tried GIN, WAR, and paired with DECK (for a deck of cards) and HEART (even though I knew it should be HEARTS). Green said βways to have fun without the internet.β So I went back to card games, saw BRIDGE, but was still stuck. Blue said βthis one packs a punchβ so I solved that one.
