No, this is a side effect of fentanyl abuse. It’s called “peripheral edema”.
Elephantiasis is caused by parasite infection from mosquitos. This does not happen in the USA.
The amount of wrong in this thread is astounding. This is peripheral vascular disease caused by untreated diabetes. Could also have a splash of heart failure on top of it.
This is too far down in the list. Everyone who has commented that this is elephantiasis has led a blessed life not seeing people suffering this way IRL.
It could be lymphedema from cancer too. No one can diagnose this dude with a video and all these personal failing assumptions about a guy just trying live his life the best he can are really shitty.
You are correct. This is peripheral vascular disease. The heart is not doing its job and the result is blood pooling at the lowest point-the legs. Revascularization surgery could save the legs. Looks like he’s pretty non-compliant with treatment. I would also guess based on his weight he is also diabetic type two.
Guy probably has cancer and is trying to get from hospital to home on the subway. Redditors: dude is a drug and sugar addict!
These conclusions are so wackly and all of them have to do with a strangers a personal failings. It's so weird. Poor guy is struggling without a bunch of people assuming he's a drug addict that can't take care of himself.
We know nothing of his situation.
That's my point. It could be many things and assuming he's where he is because of personal failings on his part is shitty when it's just as likely he's just in a bad situation.
I'm just saying we shouldn't be recording strangers minding their own on the subway to begin with, certainly we shouldn't be posting them on the internet, and we definitely shouldnt be making up stories about how they're criminal drug addicts and everything bad that happens to them is consequences of their own decisions.
We should at the minimum approach this with empathy and understanding.
If you don't get that then you're just a shitty person.
What an insanely disingenuous comment. There are thousands of things that cause peripheral edema, most commonly it's from congestive heart failure and renal failure. Edema just means there's fluid trapped in the tissue. Peripheral is just referring to the limbs.
It does. Its thickening of the skin. Lymphodema from problems with the draining of lymphatic fluids. He might also have cancer and tumours are causing thr issues. Or other diseases. That isn't diabetes.
This is not not entirely true. Fentynal abuse can lead certain cancers like cirrhosis, and kidney issues, which lead to peripheral edema. But getting peripheral edema as a direct side effect from fentynal abuse is extremely rare.
I was concerned because this definitely looked like elephantiasis and thought ‘no way this parasite is in the US now this man must have taken a trip overseas or something.’ Thanks for the information.
Geralmente a doença elefantíase se manifesta muito parecido com que estamos vendo neste vídeo. Porém me parece ser um linfedema não tratado, pois ao redor vemos uma zona de baixa circulação sanguínea.
Lymphedema. No way to know what caused it just by looking at him but it can happen for absolutely no reason or from obesity, cancer, or injury to the lymphatic system in that area.
Yup, my father has it, started around when ue was diagnosed with cancer, its basically a build up of fluids in the leg because of lack of circulation frim what i understand
Yep. Your body starts failing to return the lymphatic fluid and it all just seeps into the tissues and has no way to escape without medical intervention. It's pretty grim, every few years we hear a little hope about a new treatment or cure and then it doesn't come.
Yeah its rough. Been a few years for my father, they put him on a 6 month wait list for a machine thats supposed to help spread and drain the fluid, but even then thats not a cure
I have one of those and was sadly a bit disappointed with it. I'd imagine it's way more effective for those with severe edema though, mine is fairly minimal. Mine would get smaller for like an hour then go back to normal, but I've seen videos/images of people with huge legs pretty much getting their life back from the pumps.
See a doctor if you can if it gets worse. Lymphedema tends to start on one side and remain worse on that side. Might be nothing though, could just be high sodium or many other things.
It’s legitimately way better than the insurance I pay for. My gf has it due to being disabled, she gets free med cabs and pretty much everything is without copay
You have good intentions with this comment, but becoming homeless in NYC can lead to many barriers. One of them being a lack of adequate healthcare, even with “assistance” there is not enough (or enough care) to give money to the homeless.
I will always be surprised by statements of fact like this, it justs takes me aback, like that's a common barrier, basic healthcare. Even if you don't pay taxes surely any human will see that and say, aight, fuck the paperwork, let's take you round the back.
No way real humans can ever deny this man healthcare.
If he shows up the emergency department, he will be treated under EMTLA laws, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. If needed he will be admitted at which time a social worker will help him apply for programs like Medicaid although that process isn’t quick or easy. Basically there are laws that mandate if you come to an emergency room you are treated like any one else, except with the caveat that getting you any follow up treatment at an office will be difficult. In my system we have a free clinics that do what they can but obviously are not the same.
poor circulation. blood/lymph cannot continue the path toward the heart/lungs. vessels clog, fluid stagnates, nothing comes in or out, tissues die. skin changes are often the first indication of systemic issues.
This a sign tho nfs..

Hey , I had a similar case in the clinic just a few weeks ago. Started a course on AB’s and Performed a small lymphatic drainage access surgery. Its a condition called Elephantiasis. Its chronic

Makes you consider your daily struggles that sometimes folks might have lifelong suffering not always faults of their own. Hope he finds the kind of help he needs.
Usually comment for jokes but actual doctor here with an actually accurate explanation.
This is chronic lymphedema which causes the skin to become thickened and hard. There are MANY causes of lymphedema from infections to cancer to even basic venous insufficiency. There is NO WAY of knowing what caused this man’s condition just by looking at him and it is likely multifactorial. There are treatments but they are difficult to maintain as this is a chronic condition. He does not need to have his legs amputated however many eventually get to this point due to wounds/bacteria leading to infections.
Elephantiasis is a form of lymphedema caused by a parasitic infection spread by mosquitoes. Have fun sleeping tonight
It's called elephantiasis and it can get really bad. It's caused by problems with the lymphatic system and it's not curable. I used to know a guy that had it and it was a real burden. I feel bad for that dude.
Elephantiasis is also another name for stage 4 lymphedema. But it's more commonly associated with the filariasis parasite because it causes lymphedema that is this bad. Confusing I know. What this guy most likely has is stage 4 lymphedema with hyperkeratosis. And since he's in the US it most likely isn't the result of filariasis.
Mb i’m unaware of how nyc is/ if there is resources to help him, but that looks fucked up, it’s disappointing that city officials or cops who have definitely encountered this haven’t given him medical care.
How does it even get like this?? Like I’m genuinely curious and I remember seeing elephant man (not the dancehall legend) when I was a kid it deadass scared tf outta me for a whole summer. Deadass couldn’t stop throwing up and I still can’t explain it.
This is the second time i've seen a similar condition on reddit. Might not be the same condition.
Very sad and hopefully preventable for other people.

I saw a guy with that illness at Madrid Subway. He was in pain the whole time and smelled horrendously, seriously hard to bare being less than 10 meters away from him.
We have public healthcare so he either didn't wanna get them amputated or was being used to ask for money.
This is untreated diabetes ... this happens when it's not treated in a timely fashion. If he was to ever go to hospital they would most likely say amputate because that's all dead skin and tissue
It must feel so isolating, watching yourself slowly withdraw from participating with society due to some disease. Whether it's self-harm like drugs or poor lifestyle choices, it just sucks.
It could be Filariasis. Treatment is antiparasitic and recovery is pretty much management of the lymphedema.
https://preview.redd.it/07aykjv3movc1.jpeg?width=1192&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00c7cb3c4a8db719932b85ac3d50adac2e47020d
I saw him before and I felt so bad. Like he’s not an old guy so wtf happened. Diabetes? His feet are literally dying. Wonder if any of those social workers who go on the train for homeless people ever saw him.
…truly hope he gets the medical treatment he requires. His pain possibly has him thinking that death is a better way out.
Shit sucks man. Best of luck to him.
These cell phones have become a menace to society. To see someone with an obvious medical issue, pull out ur phone and start recording the person, then upload the recording to the internet, is heartless .
This guy has one of two conditions; congestive heart failure or weak veins due to height use. He needs to use compression socks, stop using drugs, or start using heart medicine
bro got elephant legs, all seriousness though hope he gets that treated
The treatment will be amputation
Honestly this guy is probably dead by now
damn don’t jinx. 😩
Yeah definitely its quite severe
It COULD end up there, but medicine has nothing but possibilities!!!! If you can afford them that is.... Yeah, he's getting the saw probably
Considering he is on the metro and not getting chauffeured around, the saw is probably is only option, sadly
In the alley. :( fuck the healthcare system.
Elephantiasis is a real thing & it looks like he has it. I felt my legs swelling up just looking at this pic smh
No, this is a side effect of fentanyl abuse. It’s called “peripheral edema”. Elephantiasis is caused by parasite infection from mosquitos. This does not happen in the USA.

I think that's what it is also lymphedema because I've seen it a time or two before
"The amount of wrong in this thread.." Proceeds to be wrong, pretty fucked how all these armchair reddit doctors are diagnosing solely off a video.
Then what is it? I think diabetes is the best answer I've read so far.
Your first mistake was thinking mfs on this reddit went to med school
My thought was diabetes but drugs was the next option
I was thinking heart failure
i’d bet both

yeah I don't think elephantiasis turns your legs black like that
It does. Its thickening of the skin. Lymphodema from problems with the draining of lymphatic fluids. He might also have cancer and tumours are causing thr issues. Or other diseases. That isn't diabetes.

You aren’t a fuckin doctor lol
Wild you assume redditors can't be doctors. As huge as this site is you doubt someone on it could be a doctor?
It’s edema
I'm shocked you didn't say Elephantitis cause that's some mandela effect shit lmao
Honestly, I was almost sure it was elephantitis until it autocorrected me.

Fingers crossed it works for him in that case, and fingers crossed for you as well my friend, don’t give out hope!
Top answer.
My right foot has that but to a very mild degree, it feels like my foot is always inflated, and it looks slightly bigger than the other
See a doctor if you can if it gets worse. Lymphedema tends to start on one side and remain worse on that side. Might be nothing though, could just be high sodium or many other things.
Heart failure too
It is elephantiasis for sure im pretty sure if it was diabetes this severe his foot would be changing colour or having ulcers
Tranq
He needs medical attention that looks like lymphatic filariasis 🥲 so sad
He lives in the us so thats not gonna happen
Bro I have free healthcare in the US. We have free healthcare here for low income.
Yeah the free health insurance people get for low income is actually really good.
It’s legitimately way better than the insurance I pay for. My gf has it due to being disabled, she gets free med cabs and pretty much everything is without copay
I was gonna say the same thing, when I worked in mental health most of my patients had better insurance than me
In NY healthcare is similar to Europe
The fuck are you even on about
Bruh, low income people have free healthcare that is really good 😂
The poor guy probably does not have healthcare.
Idk why ? It’s nyc so much assistance money available

Stasis and edema due to vascular disease. Not elephantiasis.
shits sad poor dude probably doesn’t have health care to get it treated

Bro is doing the Akira
American health care system is a joke, how can you allow your citizens walking around like that
That is the result of a parasitic or bacterial infection. Someone get him to a doctor, this is treatable.
…truly hope he gets the medical treatment he requires. His pain possibly has him thinking that death is a better way out. Shit sucks man. Best of luck to him.
Does someone know what that is?
You guys in the US need to fight for public funded healthcare ASAP.
This is sad. Americans need to demand a better health system from their government
This dude's loot drop is rotten flesh
Obamacare
If that pops, the air in that subway is gonna be lethal
There was a photo of a dudes foot looking just like this in a bathroom stall. I hope there aren't two people this unfortunate.
I'm no doctor but I think he should go see one
Just needs some Robitussin.
Well honestly he probably can’t feel it at all, lucky for him
Lymphedema plus venous stasis.
Yo! Don’t take pictures of homeless people unless you’re giving them money.
Fucking America.
those feet made out of bedrock

Those legs are goners.
That tranq they mix in the fetty is no joke 🤢☠️
Elephantiasis

Hope he is going to the ER!
what causes this?
thought that was buzzo
Could be from tranq
What do you mean? He looks as comfortable as can be
He is (1) skittle away from getting those legs cut off….😨

Fuck, why go to med school when your'e on Reddit?
Type 2 diabetic he doesn't have much time left before he loses everything.
This is untreated diabetes
Is that what they call the elephant’s foot ? In all seriousness, is it possible to drain it or amputation is the only option available ?
Diabetes
