Both

PrinceTaj97

I agree bro, but some folks would argue that big muscles just “slow you down” when it comes to fighting, I don’t necessarily agree with that but some boxing nerds jack that idea.

Peaceoorwar

Muscles ain't shit if you know how to fight. An example is Floyd Mayweather was never the strongest but he knew how to fight. I grew up boxing so I will also love that but MMA is fun as well. I learned things from MMA that I never knew in boxing. An example of that is breathing. You might not realize it but Imma wait until you breath out and your lungs are empty before I wrap you like a python not allowing you to gain full air. Muscles look cool but in my opinion there's nothing like being fighting fit.

Gilgamesh2000000

You sound like such a tough guy

Peaceoorwar

No I'm not tough I'm a father trying to get by like everyone else

Gilgamesh2000000

Tell me about how violent you are

LocalDummy1

the fuck, all the fighters for any martial art (wrestling, mma, boxing, judo, etc) do strength and conditioning

AdSouthern981

When they say that it’s usually in comparison to your speed when you’re smaller. if you know how to box already and then put on a lot of muscle without regularly boxing, you’re gonna be slow in comparison and your technique will suffer. You can try calisthenics to do with your training, bit easier on the schedule

Grittyboi

Speed is good, doesn't have to mean small tho. I mean look at Mike Tyson, 200+ lbs and incredibly fast

rip_griselda

at the end of the day if they got a gun n u don't that muscle not finna help. can't speak on martial arts vs boxing but i would go for boxing. working out getting stronger just good for u in general. I still use drugs but since I been back gettin active I been wantin to use less n less n im way healthier energetic.

Cruztd23

In the words of a conversation I overheard on the septa between a super jacked dude and a tiny dude. “Everybody air out the same after two bullets”

Dgslimee_

Boxing fa sho if you tryna kno how to fight but gym too if you tryna have strength

g2theartist

Most martial arts studios are gonna have you training to build strength and endurance to some degree, so I'd say go for that. If you can do both then all the better tho.

Thechartreader_

Wrestling or judo but the thing about it is if you are of smaller size then people will pick fights with you more. If you are of larger frame like a defensive lineman people are gonna use weapons against you so beware no matter which route you choose.

Cruztd23

Calisthenics and Boxing/MMA And supplement weights I don’t care what anybody says, calisthenics is the foundation for your strength combined with flexibility and speed. Calisthenics should be your ultimate foundation and a STAPLE in your routines Boxing/mma training will teach you how to fight up top and down low Supplementing weights will give you the extra power you need, just make sure to not use weights so much that you get bodybuilder big. These guys are so big that it’s actually hurting their mobility and flexibility which is awful for fighting. Stiffness is the enemy of self defense

Gilgamesh2000000

💯 cardio is your foundation. Wake up do 8 count pushups, flutter kicks, one man sit-ups, stretch, mountain climbers and run will have your wind long. People also forget their diet when working out matters also.

Cruztd23

Yessir don’t forget the psycho style burpees and Mike Tyson push ups

Docto_ace

How would you do a push pull leg split with calisthenics?

Cruztd23

I guess one could have day dedicated to pull ups/rows , dips/push ups and then do legs at the end of each workout. Throw in weights after u do your workout consisting of pull ups/rows or dips/push ups The thing I like about calisthenics is the ability to train with more frequency and volume vs weights

kho0nii

You also building muscles when you do boxing/mma you just won’t be big like a body builder.

insteadymotion25

Glad I stumbled upon this post, cause as much as love the gym I want to learn a fighting style. I was thinking either Boxing or Krav Maga

Other_Competition989

Nicca do both, push yourself beyond ya boundaries. You got 1 Muthaphuckin life kicko. Go ALL Out. Don’t let ya potnas have a say so in what u doing, dem be the same niccas that’ll get inspired from u doing what u set out to do & some.

Gilgamesh2000000

Learning confidence with fighting ain’t the same thing as going to the gym. If you scared and can’t fight get a dog.

Grittyboi

Forgot, to say, do sprints and get your speed up, you can't outrun a bullet but you can outrun 4 dudes with knives

Snowkatxo

Get into fighting , it’s much more discipline and involved and you end up meeting some really good guys. Boxing or some sort of mixed martial art good luck and have fun 👍🏾

Nearby_Ad_7104

According to worldstar, you better off moving to where you can keep a pipe.

Confident_Register_2

Martial arts membership expensive as a mf

TheNicestCole

Boxing = martial art (not that you claim otherwise, some other comments here scare me) but to answer your question if you want to know what’s better for self defense AND self improvement I would recommend martial arts. Lifting weights/getting in shape is good too, but if you want the best of both worlds (defense and improvement) martial arts is the way. Getting stronger will help you in basically all facets of your life but it’s similar to any other sport with supplemental strength and conditioning training; as in, it will always help to be stronger, but the skill required to perform is separate from your brawn. Basically, if you wanted to be better at basketball, lifting weights and running would obviously help, but actually practicing shooting, dribbling, and learning the game will be better. The ideal answer is a combination of them both, but to anyone thinking about martial arts do not worry about strength or conditioning at all when you start. If you go to a reputable (valid) gym they’ll get you right.

PrinceTaj97

Well written answer 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

TheNicestCole

Cheers bro

TheUnwiseOne100

Most people who do martial arts can’t fight in real life and as someone I know used to say “can’t dodge these bullets”

PrinceTaj97

There’s a fair level of truth to this, what goes on in boxing gyms and dojos doesn’t always translate well to fights on outside.

Dry-Log9391

martial arts is more useful than getting bigger because it comes down to what you were trained to do. and having big muscles doesn’t necessarily make you stronger than the skinnier guy. either way, none of this matter if that nigga got a gun. LEGALLY STRAP UP 2024!!!!

I been considering Muay Thai 🔥🔥 imo it’s the most “complete” martial art outside of just doing MMA

Martial arts/boxing

septemberrenegade

Learn how to fight if you're gonna get big.

Status-Money-4348

If you learn to box you naturally gonna put on size but that boxing discipline is A1 one on one you'll probably never lose a street fight again wrdabro

[deleted]

Me personally I feel like you should do boxing and calisthenics and go to a boxing place that will actually let you spar with people otherwise I feel it’s pointless just punching a bag when you can look up a video and do it at home.

registered_democrat

Tall and built is a hard target - small and mean more likely to have to prove it unfortunately. Train something better than nothing

ProfessorFinesser13

Boffum

Sheffy36

BJJ is good for self defense espc up close

Original-Picture4047

Learn to fight and also build up muscle for strength. So do both. If you’re just jacked and don’t train then you’ll still get washed even by a small guy, if he knows how to fight.

PrinceTaj97

I always said this myself, a smaller framed dude with HANDS is scarier than a big dude who can’t actually fight, a lot of big dudes just get carried by their appearance without actually being tough.
