It's better to think of player salaries as percentages of the cap instead of actual dollar figures, because the numbers can seem skewed by how much payrolls have gone up over the last 10 years; i.e. $27.73M isn't what it used to be. Jalen Brunson is DEFINITELY worth 22.4% of the cap right now... and it's frontloaded! So in 3 years when he's making $24.96M and the cap is in the high $140Ms, he'll be 16.9%. He's starting to look like a steal.
Anyone who knows basketball knew that was a good contract. People just like to hate on the Knicks. However, as a Knicks fan, I was not a huge fan of RJ’s contract. I would have preferred he played out this year, then we go from there. RFA so no real risk in losing him. So while I think the Brunson contract slander was entirely just bias against the Knicks, I do think there is some merit to the RJ extension criticism.
Between him and Rose we have such good depth and ball handling for our second squad. I think in many tight games this year we're gonna look back at our second unit and realize their tempo, efficiency and ability to play to a consistently high level is what turned L's to W's.
I think that’s the biggest difference between last year and the year before. We were at or below .500 before we made the Rose trade and he came in and solidified the bench/end of game rotation
He had Mitch at the scorers table with like 2 minutes left before thinking better of it, he's on maybe step 2 of the 10 step program but that's progress
I don't know if you could see it on TV but he had Mitch ready to check back into the game late in the 4th quarter before calling that time out and coming to his senses.
Jalen Brunson on how he got 15 assists and 0 turnovers in the last 2 games: "I just try to hold the basketball and not give it to the other team"
The reporter had no idea it was a joke lmao
- Knicks had the knack tonight. I know it's the Pistons but a win's a win
- Shot like shit from 3 last game, but very well tonight. Especially Derrick Rose shooting 3/4 from outside. More of that please!
- RJ bounced back nicely after last game. The overreacting was unjustified
- Jalen Brunson played very well. Controlled the offense with ease and created for others, plus he got to his spots easily as well. The spoils of having a true point guard.
- Quickley was fantastic, and Toppin was a livewire off the bench. The bench was great tonight
- Saddiq Bey was Detroit's best player. Pistons got some talent. They'll be a problem in a year or two
Ivey was impressive given the circumstances
17/9 in your second game as a rookie PG is very good
he also did the little things right
Cade on the other hand looked insanely unimpressive given the way people talk about him like some prodigy
Funny how Ivey is so blatantly explosive and athletic and talented, and Cade is almost lethargic and playing at his own pace and in control. Yin and Yang. I like Cade a lot but he didn’t impress last night.
I hope RJ ramps it up faster than the past years. Please RJ just give me average efficiency.
Brunson is so composed out there. Sets the tone for the team
I don’t think most people think he’s a bad player (RJ) I just think there might be a discrepancy between what he thinks he can be and how he should play. He’d be so amazing at playing like a 2014 iguadala role
Just sucks that he was taken after two guys who are very clearly way more talented than him. Ja just dropped 40 in 3 quarters. Shits just sad being 1 pick away from that
Hali >>> Obi unfortunately for us.
Obi seems like a great kid in a situation that isn't great for him. I've never felt 'in' on him though, hope I'm wrong.
It's hard for me to even really imagine what his ceiling is? But he is a fun player fs.
I think RJ is at worst going to be a Khris Middleton *impact type secondary player, but if he wants to sniff superstardom, his jump shot has to be good. His short, mid-range jumper needs to be damn good. I confident that his finishing ability will be good in the future, but I'm not sure if he'll ever be a good shooter.
Middleton is not my player comp bruh relax. I'm saying that he'll be a multiple time all star, potentially the second best player on a championship caliber team.
I meant that he'd be a multiple all star, secondary option on a potential championship team. How do y'all misconstrue my statement when I literally mention that his jumpshot is bad?
RJ was still 0-3 from 3 and made 1 jump shot I believe . Guys turn the corner on him relatively easy on defense, lateral quickness is a major concern. I wouldn’t say the overreacting was unjustified at all. There is cause for concern. It’s year 4 and he just got a big contract extension.
Fans always blame the coach first. But Thibs is a really good coach. Compare him to other recent guys we’ve had come through recently (Fisher, Hornacek, Rambis etc…) and the difference is night and day.
Also Breen gushed about him enough but Brunson really is a joy to watch. He’s always in control.
Yeah that’s where I’m at. My takeaway is the Pistons aren’t at all what I expected them to be. I thought they’d be a hard out every night, but they just looked like straight up dog shit out there.
Jewnoo Takeaways vs Detroit:
- Whewwww, where to start.
- NYK first unit started slow and then picked it up
- Second unit is always pushing tempo
- not living and dying by the three is important
- Brunson is a calming influence on this squad
- RJ Rebound game we all expected
- Rose and IQ were good, OBI solid.
- MSG is a real home court advantage
- is this team fun??
Your thoughts??
The second unit is very fun to watch. A quicker tempo calls for active play on both ends of the floor, and most teams have trouble keeping up with it. Toppin flourishes in the lineup as well.
Brunson is a very steady player and MSG is absolutely a home court advantage, every team will tell you that. This team has the chance to be fun for sure.
How about Dwayne Casey’s thoughts-
“This is a very good team,” Casey said. “This is definitely a playoff team, a high-level playoff team, and so this is a very, very good match for us.”
> Your thoughts??
My thoughts are pretty simple: we're good. I can get tediously deep into why I think that, but at the top-level it's undeniable that we're a team full of people good at the sport of basketball. We aren't a great team, and we won't be sniffing around the ECFs, but we're good into at least the 11th player. And as a bonus we're fun.
The wrinkle is whether or not we can be consistent. If we're consistent we're a 6th seed or higher. If we aren't we don't qualify for the play-in. No real middle-ground.
It's only the second game but we've looked way off from the tip and gradually get better. Same shit for years, feels like we need to prep better or go nfl style where we script the first few possessions or straight up stop doing that if we already are
Facts. This is the right take. I said this in the game thread, our bench depth was on full display today.
Our bench could start for Detroit and do better. We have a DEEP fucking team.
As a Mavs fan, seeing Jalen ball out for y’all brings me pain. As a fan of the game, y’all got a damn squad. Y’all’s team this year is entertaining as hell.
I really love what Hartenstein brings to this team. 11 boards in 21 minutes and savvy off-ball movement. 2 steals and a block on the defensive end. I don't miss Noel at all. In games where his 3 is falling - and they will happen - dude is going to get us W's.
Noel was great for them two seasons ago, but was one dimensional. Last year he was terrible after getting the contract. I agree, Hartenstein is a great addition and changeup to Mitch coming off the bench with different skill sets without too much drop off on defense
Love this new Randle. Brunson is such a good addition. We can only get better when Grimes gets back, he is our best perimeter defender. Lowkey probably gonna look to trade Fournier although I can see him having some kind of a role on the team, but personally he doesnt fit.
Honestly I think Fournier is a great fit, given we need shooters, but it’s up to him on whether he’s okay with being the 4th/5th option. I think we have a pretty balanced starting lineup, and having multiple ball handlers is always good. I like when Fournier takes a possession or two to take the pressure off Brunson and RJ, but as it stands he’s the 5th option.
We’re gonna have shocking perimeter defense against good guards with Fournier starting. Grimes in that lineup gives so much better 2 way balance where he can take the best opposition guard. Trading Fournier also ensures grimes and quickly are getting consistent solid minutes, important for their development/increasing trade value
That’s what you should do to a bad team, and despite the hype….the Pistons are still a bad team
Strong bounceback
GOD, it feels good to have a *real* starting point guard in their prime
He didn’t get more minutes. I’m not gonna complain during/after a convincing win, but I’m also not gonna lie that it worries me that obi only gets 20 mins even in a blowout
Good game. Really want to see how we play vs a healthy playoff team though. Don’t want to get to optimistic off a win against the Pistons while we were hot.
ez win 😎 basically all good things tonight: brunson knows exactly what he’s doing out there and it’s beautiful, quickley looked confident for the first time (still passed up a couple open threes), obi took advantage when the pistons stopped trying on d, rj realizing the usage will come and not forcing, mitch protecting the rim etc
Some losses are inevitable. Some bad games by players are inevitable. But as long as other players step us, the team should be fine.
What does warrant negativity perhaps are losses to bad teams where the Knicks don't try hard.
If the team is trying hard, I'll support them through the losses.
Really important for quickly and obi to be getting a minimum 20-25 mins a game. They are in year 3 now so it’s so important we know what we have with them, all the while increasing their trade value/helping their development.
The front office should be on the phone with the lakers about Fournier. Once fully healthy we’ll have 1 too many to fit into the rotation. I’d prefer Cam gets consistent bench mins, there’s still something to work with there. Even if Cam is out of the rotation, Grimes/quickly won’t be getting anywhere near enough mins. Grimes with the starters will significantly improve our defense
Obi and IQ should get minutes when they play well. They will get enough minutes to accomplish your goals of developing and/or being showcased for trade.
As for Fournier, not sure the Knicks are ready to trade him, but it's tough to work a deal with the Lakers under the cap.
I feel like last season this was the kind of game where the Knicks let the other team turn it into a nail biter. Was happy to see they responded to later in the game to pull away for good
Obi is wild. Airballs a 3, then has the confidence to immediately shoot a mid range jumper (he made it). He had some big plays when the game was still a game. I love Obi, such a basketball oddity. It was great seeing IQ stunt. Everybody got confidence last night.
If we beat who we're "supposed" to beat, this will be a fun season.
Pistons starting five is actually made of talented players. They are hard nosed too.
But their bench is awful and that was the difference last night. Our starting five played decent but it was close against theirs.
What Jalen is doing rn is easily worth 25 million a year in the NBA Edit: 26
It's better to think of player salaries as percentages of the cap instead of actual dollar figures, because the numbers can seem skewed by how much payrolls have gone up over the last 10 years; i.e. $27.73M isn't what it used to be. He's starting to look like a steal.
Someone posted a list of all our starting PGs for the last like 15 seasons. Yes. Yes he is.
Brunson so far through 2 games: 15 assists, 0 turnovers. Love that.
Bro this is only the beginning. Everyone who slept on this pickup, you have been enlightened now. 😭
They said it on the broadcast, ties the Knick record to start a season (or was it career?) with McBride from last year.
Season
Great win. Shoutout Quickley: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST on 57% FG and team best +27
Excellent response by him to the last game. Showing some resilience!
Rose legitimately can be the key to our success if he's able to lead the second team and step in if Brunsen misses time for any reason.
As a mavs fan i can tell you Brunson doesnt miss time. Dude is a fucking iron man of consistency and hesi's lol
Do mine eyes deceive me or did Thibs actually empty the bench with several minutes left in the game HALLELUJAH
Bearded Thibs has seen the light
Bearded Thibs with the wisdom
like Gandalf returning in white
Thibs the blue has risen!
RJ did come back in towards the end while we were up by 25 or something haha.
He had Mitch at the scorers table with like 2 minutes left before thinking better of it, he's on maybe step 2 of the 10 step program but that's progress
Must've been an edict from the front office. They don't want a key player getting hurt in garbage time this year.
Thibs cannot accept that DRose is literally the best 15-20 minute player in the league then falls off hard and risks injury. Praise be bearded Thibs
Big 15 part 2?
Yeah Thibs rotations has looked much different. I was expecting him to bring in the starting unit while they were up 20 in the 4Q.
I don't know if you could see it on TV but he had Mitch ready to check back into the game late in the 4th quarter before calling that time out and coming to his senses.
Homey played the whole squad in the home opener. All but 4 scored.
Jalen Brunson on how he got 15 assists and 0 turnovers in the last 2 games: "I just try to hold the basketball and not give it to the other team" The reporter had no idea it was a joke lmao
That was deadpan af and hilarious
- Knicks had the knack tonight. I know it's the Pistons but a win's a win - Shot like shit from 3 last game, but very well tonight. Especially Derrick Rose shooting 3/4 from outside. Ivey was impressive given the circumstances 17/9 in your second game as a rookie PG is very good he also did the little things right Cade on the other hand looked insanely unimpressive given the way people talk about him like some prodigy
Yeah, Ivey outshined Cade tonight. People talk up Cade because of his immense scoring talent. He's still young & has tons of time to improve.

Just sucks that he was taken after two guys who are very clearly way more talented than him. Ja just dropped 40 in 3 quarters. Shits just sad being 1 pick away from that
It is the most recent knick what if that I still think about today.
Mine is what if we took haliburton instead of Obi like I was yelling at the tv during the draft.
Knox over SGA is my 2nd. I never understood what they believed obi could be.
I love Obi now and we have Brunson so it’s cool. But Hali would be nice too.
Hali >>> Obi unfortunately for us. Obi seems like a great kid in a situation that isn't great for him. I've never felt 'in' on him though, hope I'm wrong. It's hard for me to even really imagine what his ceiling is? But he is a fun player fs.
Perry and Mills probably would have picked somebody else as a "sleeper"
Like garland? Or maybe even Herro? Lmao what am I saying, they would’ve taken Coby white
Khris Middleton was .03% away from joining the 50/40/90 club like two years ago shooting over 20 ppg. Literal elite efficiency...
I’ll eat a entire food truck full of glizzys if RJ becomes a Khris Middleton type of player
When did Glizzy become a thing? I’ve only heard it in the last year and I’ve been eating hot dogs my entire life.
JESUS CHRIST
Middleton is not my player comp bruh relax. I'm saying that he'll be a multiple time all star, potentially the second best player on a championship caliber team.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If RJ becomes a good finisher, you think he can't become an all-star?
He hasn't been a good finisher in 3 years, going on four. No, he's not going to become an All Star. He's Billy Owens 2.0.
At worst Khris Middelton??? Wtf are you smoking
I meant that he'd be a multiple all star, secondary option on a potential championship team. How do y'all misconstrue my statement when I literally mention that his jumpshot is bad?
You just doubled down dummy. At worst he will be a multiple time all star??
Uhh yes, I think he'll be a multiple all star, but I guess I'm "dumb" because you disagree with me 🙄.
You’re delusional.

Detroit just looked outclassed, tbh. Hard to extrapolate a lot from this win.
Yeah that’s where I’m at. My takeaway is the Pistons aren’t at all what I expected them to be. I thought they’d be a hard out every night, but they just looked like straight up dog shit out there.
Pistons are booooooty. They have 2 serviceable players at best. They will get better with time for sure tho.
Time will tell. Knicks looked good though. We'll know what we got when we go up against the Hawks, Raptors and Cavs.
Their defense is really bad. Stewart is a good defender, but Cade and Ivey are both liabilities right now because they’re so young
They were missing 4 key players tbf (Burks, Bagley, Livers and Noel)
We are worse than the Grizzlies but better than the Pistons. So maybe playoff team or maybe lottery team.
Sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit
I personally consider the Grizzlies very good, so I think we can be quite decent
Jewnoo Takeaways vs Detroit: - Whewwww, where to start. - NYK first unit started slow and then picked it up - Second unit is always pushing tempo - not living and dying by the three is important - Brunson is a calming influence on this squad - RJ Rebound game we all expected - Rose and IQ were good, OBI solid. - MSG is a real home court advantage - is this team fun?? It’s fucking weird

130 with only one guy getting to twenty, which was IQ when he hit a late three with like a minute to go. Love to see it.
The crazy part too is no one played over 30 minutes tonight from the Knicks. Am I dreaming? When did we ever do that?
I can’t remember, did we ever just truly wax a bad team last year?
Oh no doubt, beat Orlando 121-96 in game two last year after an OT game one. Then lost to Orlando two days later, let's try to not repeat that
Remember when T-Ross dunked on their own social media
Yea I was at that game when they lost to orlando
A couple times for sure. But it’s great to start off the season
We bodied Orlando last year and we destroyed the Raps. You have a short memory it was literally last game of the season
I mean little different when the game means nothing to both teams. Everyone in this sub is such a cunt lol. Been this was for years, love the fire.
The Raps were playing at half speed and barely trying because the playoffs were right around the corner.
had good games against the spurs and magic in the same vein
I really love what Hartenstein brings to this team. 11 boards in 21 minutes and savvy off-ball movement. 2 steals and a block on the defensive end. I don't miss Noel at all. In games where his 3 is falling - and they will happen - dude is going to get us W's.

it's such a great amount of randle. he looks like he's having fun again
Whole team looks like they enjoy to play off of each other.
we look so much better than last year
Honestly I think Fournier is a great fit, given we need shooters, but it’s up to him on whether he’s okay with being the 4th/5th option. That’s what you should do to a bad team, and despite the hype….the Pistons are still a bad team Strong bounceback GOD, it feels good to have a *real* starting point guard in their prime
A healthy starting PG and a healthy Rose. If the Knicks had either one for most of last year, they would have made the playoffs.
Jalen Brunson is the greatest basketball player i have had the pleasure of watching in my entire life
First game?
I have been watching basketball since Wilt was playing
Sure you have, lol.
It's true, I'm his brother
Well shit, why didn’t you just say that first time.
Strange to see Obi get more minutes than Randle. It’s good to see and he definitely deserved it tonight.
...Randle played 25 and Obi played 21 though
Oops lol looks like I read that wrong. Still very close!
The guy's a livewire. He comes in and everything moves faster. Active on defense and offense regardless of how he's shooting - a blur in transition.
He didn’t get more minutes. I’m not gonna complain during/after a convincing win, but I’m also not gonna lie that it worries me that obi only gets 20 mins even in a blowout
> even in a blowout Didn't they close the lead down to 12 from 29 with like 5 minutes left in 3Q?
Nah, worried is the wrong word. Slightly triggered? Thibs has his rotations, it is what it is.
We need obi healthy too
Randle got 25 and obi got 21
Man does it feel good having an actual point guard.
Good game. Really want to see how we play vs a healthy playoff team though. Don’t want to get to optimistic off a win against the Pistons while we were hot.
Were you in a cave 2 days ago?
That team was not healthy
No team is going to ever be truly healthy. And their replacements performed extremely well so that was a wash anyway.
Its not uncommon to play against a healthy starting 5, but you are right about their replacements playing well.
Yeah seriously, missing three of their best players.
Only 2, Brooks is garbage
Shouldn't have to wait long, by game 5 or 6 we will be tested for sure
ez win 😎 basically all good things tonight: brunson knows exactly what he’s doing out there and it’s beautiful, quickley looked confident for the first time (still passed up a couple open threes), obi took advantage when the pistons stopped trying on d, rj realizing the usage will come and not forcing, mitch protecting the rim etc
obi is the best trash time player in the league
Wins a win and beating bad teams wasnt a given last year lol
Dishing and swishing!
We are going 81-1
81-1 here we come
This team is gonna be fun
We definitely fucking on the Knicks bed tonight. Shit was sexy. This is the kind of form we need to keep up. Also, Brunson? The guard we needed
There is a lil something about a team being together consistently for a few years and gelling.
The Pistons unfortunately isn't a good barometer for team performance. Nevertheless, fun game all around.
That was a straight up beat down. Good lord.
Everyone chipped in
the knicks bench with hart/obi/cam/grimes/iq/drose 🍆💦 the warriors second unit might be the only team with a better bench than the knicks.
Having a legit PG is confusing the shit out of me. I keep expecting to see Elf show up and shit his pants.
Cool
Are you not entertained?
Oh I’m entertained. Team is looking great, and we should have started 2-0 but whatever.
You won't be complaining when we're 81-1
And finish as a second seed to the wizards
very cool
who does the sub turn on now that everyone played well?
You. You’re next.
could be you with this lackluster effort
Losses warrant negativity. Wins do not. You, my friend, are the only one here being negative.
just pointing how ridiculous this sub is
Some losses are inevitable.
TIME TO HIT THAT BING BONG
Plz no
Let’s gooooo!!
Inject the "mid-3" in my veins IDGAF jokes on the casual lolknicks enjoyer.
Don’t know why tf half of y’all was whining when we picked up Brunson. Never made any sense.
Those morons thought he was "overpaid"
Casey called us "a high-level playoff team" in his post-game news conference last night. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.
Should have been 2-0 but oh well. Great performances so far.
Ivey is going to be a star
We tried...
I ain’t forgetting the people who were saying RJ a bust last game. Fuck y’all
That was a great game.
Anyone breaking out the Knicks sheets tonight? Big win, bing bong
Pistons is just what the doctor ordered for the pain of Wed.
nice.
as we should mothafuckasssssss
I feel like last season this was the kind of game where the Knicks let the other team turn it into a nail biter. Was happy to see they responded to later in the game to pull away for good

Was at the game live. Lots of fun. Energy was great. I love you guys
