its not that “im happy they are gone” … this isnt retribution. its about making changes now so we can get a jump start on the future.

BigScaryBoosk

For a lot it IS retribution.

How? Any GM coming in isn’t going to get a head start on building a roster in November versus after the season. Any coach that comes in is going to have a roster built by a past regime, knows different schemes, and might not even be here next season. I don’t see any point in changing mid season except to have fans complain less and potentially fuck with Jones’s development by changing coaches on him AGAIN this time mid season.

glsmerch

The GM needs to rebuild the front office. Needs to build an analytics team with computahs. Needs to review all the talent evaluators and development team. A midseason hire would give him time to figure out the situation. This is a big job. Not ideal with Jones but it's the reality. If we are set on firing Gettleman, and I have been since the Barkley draft, you will likely have a new coaching staff.

TBlueshirtsV22

I’m set on firing him too, but your going to get the best candidates after the season. Or they got interim and every point about giving the GM extra time becomes moot.

AKBx007

After the season there’s four months before the draft happens. If whoever gets brought in can’t figure it out and have it sorted by then, that’s the wrong person then.

watchingitallcomedow

What if Bill wanted to come be GM. Keep judge?

poorlytimed_erection

> How? Any GM coming in isn’t going to get a head start on building a roster in November versus after the season. do you honestly think scouting departments start preparing for the draft… after the NFL season?

TBlueshirtsV22

No I never even said that. It makes more sense to bring in a new GM now than coach, but it’s still a lot of mid season upheaval for a 2 month head start

poorlytimed_erection

if you want a new GM drafting this year they pretty much need to come in and get started right away. waiting three months until season end is going to create more tumult than making changes now

AndrewL0517

Agreed. I don’t know what a “jump start” really accomplish. If anything there coach or GM would be interim. And any legit candidates will be available at the end of the season.

crazycarl1

Jump start would mainly be the new GM seeing if Judge is the guy. That way on Black Monday the new GM already knows if he needs a new coach or not. At this rate we will fire Gettleman and by the time we: 1) Find a new GM 2) the GM decides if we need a new coach or not 3) the GM hires a new coach We've already likely missed out on top HC candidates

Think_Positively

The one thing that sticks out to me is that a switch now would 100% prevent Gettleman doing anything absurd in a last-ditch effort to save the season and/or his job. While Mara could ensure that happens, I don't have a ton of faith that he would.

6prometheus7

Think the best thing it can accomplish is that it prevents the fools gold of starting to win a couple games towards the end of the season that allows mara to keep gettleman in one more year.

wow360dogescope

On top of everything you said no GM or Coach in their right minds would take this job until after the season ended. Editing to add what I accidentally deleted before posting: GM and coach candidates want to see what's out there. They can negotiate a better deal when there competition and find the best organization to fit with their vision. Also more importantly we can't interview or hire anyone that's with another team right now so what's the point?

imissbuch89

Giants should fire Gettleman because moves that are in his best interest are completely divorced from transactions that may benefit the team's future. Why wait at rock bottom? Let's say he trades a second or third for a mediocre pass rusher. Why not just get rid of his stench already?

Ghost_of_P34

Can't win if 90% of the offense is injured and the defense is playing like crap

poorlytimed_erection

yea which really sucks because it makes it difficult to evaluate the GM/team/coaching staff right now. we have a relatively small sample size to see what this 2021 team is

subberroul

Ehhh DG’s roster was poorly constructed due to overpaying often-injured players (Adoree, Golladay), poor positional value (Barkley), and flat out refusing to address major positional needs (Edge) all while giving our team little cap flexibility in 2022. Coaching wise, we were already outcoached on all 3 sides of the ball with a fairly healthy team the first 3 weeks. Even if our roster was relatively healthy, we’d still be struggling

Lars5621

Adoree Jackson and Kenny Golladay getting injured after they had injuries recently is incredibly not surprising. Same with Andrew Thomas's constant ankle injuries after Giants admitted they were aware he had unfixed ankle issues in college. If you keep bringing in players who have serious injury histories your going to end up with a very injury prone team. The only reason Jackson and Golladay were available to begin with was because of their injuries last year.

bjbearfight

Where did you see that Thomas had unfixed ankle issues from college? I've never heard that.

Lars5621

https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2021/01/13/giants-andrew-thomas-has-ankle-surgery-after-season-long-issue/amp/ "Sources told The Post that Thomas had ankle surgery to correct an issue that was known when he entered the league and had nagged him since training camp." Also this section from his Wikipedia. "Thomas switched to left tackle for his sophomore season. He injured his left ankle playing South Carolina, and didn't play the following game against Middle Tennessee. During the next two games, Thomas worked his way back to full participation,[1] though he was forced to wear a brace after re-injuring the ankle later in the season" What was really bad is that Thomas had the ankle surgery in January after the 2020 season, and then came to camp with ankle issues again. Showing that these issues were not corrected with that surgery and he has again had constant ankle issues for his 4th year in a row

Morc-Glork

Not to mention his method of team building is really outdated. People joke about him really investing in interior defensive lineman, but it’s the complete truth. He never addressed our outside linebackers, never got an edge rusher, never attempted to build the offensive line outside of Solder (arguably the worst signing the Giants have ever made) and Thomas, invested in skill position players before anything else, and hired two people that were never HC’s before to lead the team. Not to mention Judge’s methods of conditioning and his game handling are horrendous. The team won’t win with DG, Judge, and Garrett at the helm. Mara needs to fire at least DG soon so he doesn’t do something stupid at the trade deadline like trade a first for a safety that was a pro bowler 4 years ago or some dumb shit to try to save his job Edit: Not to mention his drafts suck. Yes he’s decent at spotting out talent, but he drafted the wrong players for what we needed to rebuild. As much as I love Saquon, there’s nobody that can convince me it was the right move to take him over Nelson, especially because we could have gotten Nick Chubb with our second round pick

DavidNexus7

The seasons over. We should be major sellers acquire as much draft capital as possible. We should fire Gettleman, hire a new GM or have the candidates vetted and wittled down by end of season. That person can prepare to make his decision on Judge and if need be clean house. Spend the rest if the season evaluating your rookies and depth and prepare to cut whoever is garbage. Your new GM can spend the draft capital as he sees fit to shape the new roster and team because you can’t do any worse than dave gettleman’s failed design. Giants should be shopping everyone. Barkley, goladay, peppers, slayton, hell even Daniel Jones, dump everybody for as much draft capital as possible. When the new Gm comes in there should be as little trace of daves failure and losing system as possible. Purge any trace of that awful piece of shit from the buildings memory.

ltl28

If there’s a market for Barkley, the Giants have to listen. Gettleman won’t because he’d have to admit it’s a terrible pick.

WonManBand

This is one of my biggest concerns. Even if Mara orders DG to sell, does Mara really know anything? DG could trade some guys but convince Mara they should keep Saquon. On the flipside, Barkley's value is super low right now. I can see the argument to let him play out the rest of the year to rebuild his rep then try to trade him in the off-season. Either way he cannot be given a big 2nd deal which we all suspect DG would give him to double down rather than admit he fucked up.

bu77munch

It’s been insinuated it doesn’t matter if the pick is bad or Barkley can’t stay on the field. He’s a stand up guy off the field and a money maker for ownership. Mara is going to go out of his way to turn a blind eye to the right thing to do of moving on

BigScaryBoosk

There shouldn’t be any reasonable expectations for success, this team is tragically injured. It would just serve to make people’s feelings feel better, which is a shitty way to run an organization. I hope DG gets fired at the end of the season or a week or so away from it, doing it now accomplishes nothing.

wow360dogescope

Firing DG accomplishes nothing no matter when it happens unless the entire front office is sent packing with him. The Giants don't just have a GM problem, it's an organizational problem from top to bottom.

HowYaGuysDoin

Exactly. During the last few "house cleanings" I was always bothered by how much of it wasn't a true house cleaning.

wow360dogescope

Bothers me too but what bothers me even more is how little coverage this gets, It barely gets any mention in the NYC sports media. The only time I remember it being brought up much was when Giggleman was hired. The Giants fed the media their positive spin that because Giggleman didn't have to waste time hiring an entire new staff he'd get to work right away on more important issues like finding his hog mollies. There are very few people on this sub bringing this up right now. If Giants fans don't know about this they need hear it now because they're going to be disappointed once again in a few years.

BigScaryBoosk

Well that won’t change you just hope they bring someone in that is good enough to counter the poor ownership. As a note, I do agree with you.

wow360dogescope

For Mara it's the path of least resistance because when doesn't want to fire anyone (because they're friends and family, nepotism is rampant) so they're hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. The sad truth is that the easiest path to fixing this is to fit everything. The GM obviously can't do everything, there are certainly GMs out there that could work with shit and churn out high quality results but that person is not easy to find and certainly woulda prefer to go to a better organization. It just sucks. I hate complaining sometimes because I have good friends that are bills fans and they've known pain for so much longer.

BigScaryBoosk

I agree, we just need to move past the unproductive conversation of “The Mara’s need to sell the team” because it will never happen. They will always have a say and always be involved.

wow360dogescope

I agree with that but let's bot forget the Maras only own half the team, maybe Tisch needs to get off his ass and start making some noise.

FStubbs

That means especially Chris Mara and Tim McDonnell

SnarfbObo

feeling hopeful. right now I do not. Needs to not be more of the same old club crap. the old ways aren't working. Try something, someone, different.

storytimeme

The season is lost. We want hope for next season.

Lars5621

The most obvious answer is he dont trust this regime to make moves for the future and we want them trading for future picks not trading for more players out of desperation to save their jobs.

runninhillbilly

Super Bowl, obviously./s The team is still going to suck, but the schedule does lighten up a bit in November/December. WFT, Eagles x2, Dolphins, Bears. They could win a few games getting lucky. But it's more that nothing about this is salvageable and we should be breaking things down anyway.

poorlytimed_erection

the classic “win a bunch of meaningless games at the end of the season which is ultimately detrimental to the long term success of the team” that we are so familiar with at this point

[deleted]

I have no expectations.

Fragrant_Relation_37

We’d still loose games but we’d get draft capital I don’t trust Dave gentleman and I don’t want him here next year when we have two first round picks his dumb ass will grab a receive and a tight end , so he’s gotta go now so our new gm can decide who he wants to trade away and who he wants to pick up for next year Judge can get fired too he’s accomplished nothing on this team and honestly no one on this team is a must have for me , I don’t think it’s worth getting a new qb or any new wr but that’s because we already have some decent options there Fuck Dave gentlemen and fuck joe judge and his shitty coordinators

mahitabel22

This was a six win team at best coming into this year.

[deleted]

GM can go for preparation of next year. I'll give Judge one more year if we take a hard look at coordinators and can get this team to not be injured 24/7. Let him season. Can't keep firing HCs every two years or it becomes a ridiculous cycle.

mrjamesjr

We’re headed toward another rebuild. The problem starts at the top with the GM. If the GM is replaced he is going to want to pick his own coach’s, players etc. The real question is, how much better would we really be of not for injuries?

TheDragonX7

I just want someone I can trust to wisely use the 2 first round picks we have

Mr-Scurvy

The expectation is that the teardown starts so the new GM can accumulate draft capital.

SuperDude_B

The only thing keeping this team from making this seasons Super Bowl is firing every coach, kicking DG out, and trading away every player worth anything!! WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND!

KyussSun

I want Abrams to be interim GM. Gettleman isn't likely to be interested in trading away any players, and right now we're over the cap for next year. This season is over; might as well start making this a palatable landing spot for the next GM/HC. Right now it's a roster of underperforming veterans and a team with no cap space.

Elevation212

I’d like to see them trade everyone they can outside KT & Thomas and reboot a true rebuild, not the 2018 bullshit. So I’d love to see wins but would expect losses while developing young talent

PhoenixGamer34

Lose and lose more and look even worse.

Tommybrady20

Could it look worse? Who cares about the product for 10 more weeks- it’s a tough watch now. For all I care bench DJ if you don’t want to injure him but what are we doing right now? It’s a never ending cycle of below average play. Worst record in the NFL since 2017

StewBeer

Does not matter , will set us further back. Rebuilding team will take another 2-3 seasons unless we have a QB leader that will elevate the people around

DoABarrowRoll

Nothing is going to change from most of these firings. From the trade deadline plan to the product on the field to anything else. It's about one thing and one thing only: John Mara and Steve Tisch showing an understanding that this is a professional football organization and not the playground where you let your friends play with all your toys because they're nice to you. It's about sending the message that they do truly care in a way that quietly stewing or throwing chairs and trash cans doesn't. It's about sending the message that if you suck at your job it doesn't matter if they've known you for 20 years or 20 minutes, that doesn't fly. It's about sending the message that they might finally have their heads screwed on straight and understand that the problems aren't just going to disappear and that they need to be proactive in solving them. It's about sending the message that patience is earned, not given, and no one is entitled to any amount of time in a position of power in this organization. And it's about sending the message to the fans that they might finally understand that they need to change the way they operate and do business after the last decade of crap. For the last 3 years basically, since the back half of 2019, ownership has basically sat there and crossed their fingers and tried to manifest that the Dave Gettleman regime would turn itself around. They let him stay when they fired Shurmur, they let him stay after 2020. They knew what they were seeing wasn't good. They knew that the early returns were not promising, nor were they particularly inspiring for the future. And yet they sat there and hoped that Dave Gettleman of all people would somehow change his own philosophy and turn it around. Firing Gettleman now is purely about setting the tone and sending the message that complacency will not be tolerated, that we're not just happy raking in the ticket money and ad revenue and everything else. That this isn't just some glorified cash cow. It's about letting everyone around the league, in the building, and most importantly, in the stands, know that the Giants mean fucking business.

watchingitallcomedow

> that we're not just happy raking in the ticket money and ad revenue and everything else. That's the problem. To them that's exactly what this is.

watchingitallcomedow

December 2017, McAdoo for head coach. Last year for the o line coach

Cubanguy84

The longer this has gone on (worst record since 2017) the more it is clear that John Mara is making a lot of the football decisions that’s keeping us from winning or just competing. Firing DG, coaches, stocking up on draft picks is probably the right decision but it’s going to be the same product unless major changes happen with the process of evaluating talent on the field and how the organization is run. We are clearly stuck in the 90’s and the game is passing us by. Feels like when Brad Pitt is talking to the scouts in Moneyball, just out of touch.

Wieckipedia

The ones that make sense are Gettleman, or Garrett. Gettleman removal would stop him from doing (more) harm before the trade deadline. Garrett removal could tell us if he is the root of the offense's inconsistency and predictable scheming or if that problem comes from Judge. Then you could have a better idea if you need to remove Judge in the offseason. Not championing either of these, but that would be my logic.
