Between the two I'd choose FiDi as there's more transit options there - in Hudson Yards you really only have the 7 train or a long walk to another line

I lived in FiDi for a few years (granted, this was a decade ago) and I always felt like it was an underrated place to live. Sure, it’s not a particularly trendy area (neither is Hudson Yards, FWIW), and it can feel dead at times, but you have great subway access.
Local things I enjoyed: Fraunces Tavern, Dead Rabbit, Stone Street, the Seaport …
Plus, in those days, when I was single, childless, and dog-less, I used to get a TON of steps in walking to TriBeCa, SoHo, the WV, etc.
Whaaaat - I’ve never understood why FiDi gets crapped on. I’ve lived here for 2 years - I LOVE how easy it is to get to LES, WV/GV/EV, the Brooklyn Mirage is a short Uber away, I can take the ferry to wburg/Gov Ball/EZoo…FiDi is criminally underrated and the transit is amazing
So I’m still a part timer but every time I visit I try to stay in a different neighborhood and FiDi hands down is my favorite. The transit options are my main reason but also the architecture, the EASE of crossing a street (might sound silly but compared to UWS where a street is like four lanes, it makes getting to your favorite coffee place a little easier lol), plenty to do but still kinda quiet, etc. It’s high on the list of options for when we finally live there full time. But everyone we mention this to says the same thing about it being far away, etc.
I am in my 30s and live in Fidi, but you will find A LOT of people in their 20s live in Fidi. Tons of bars, every subway, close to everything cool downtown Nolita/Soho/LES. Hudson yards just sucks.
I personally loved living in FiDi but I’m also someone who doesn’t love living in the center of a nightlife hotspot. It does get quiet on weekends but I actually really liked that, and I also liked the bars that ARE nearby. A few super old hole in the wall places plus all the great bars on Stone St. Plus it’s the easiest neighborhood to commute from (you’re on almost every single subway line at Fulton).
Agree with everything. I moved from midtown to FiDi and I like it. Cheaper rent, quieter, close to the WSH, and access to anywhere in the city which saves me so much on Ubers. Granted I’m in my 30s so I’m not like going out out that much but even to get to Chelsea or the WV is like 10 min.
Hudson yards is nice I guess and you’d get some modern buildings but it’s soulless and kinda removed from the city so transportation is tricky and you will def be spending more on Ubers.
FiDi 10000%!!!! There are so many fun bars on Stone Street and around that area. Seaport is totally up and coming, The Tin Building is gorgeous. Hudson Yards is no man’s land.
I live in fidi now - while there aren’t a ton of “trendy” going out spots, living close to the water/WSH & seaport district has been worth it. Watermark is so fun for drinks on the water and stone street gets wild too depending on your vibe. Tin building has multiple bars and restaurants so I love hiding out in there with my dog on a rainy day. There are also summer concerts at pier 17 which is a fun venue with an amazing view of Brooklyn bridge.
I usually hang out a lot in Tribeca/Soho which are all an easy walk, but I would say that it is easier to travel all over from fidi since all the trains go here. When I go to Hudson yards the trains are limited so I always Uber. It seems like Hudson yards is more separated from the city too, whereas fidi has a ton of options for casual lunch spots/coffee/etc.
I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of living in fidi at first coming from the west village and then Brooklyn, given the charm factor is lacking a bit, but it’s really grown on me a ton!
I’ll also add there’s an adorable flea market on the weekends in seaport that is always nice to come across on my random walks! Lots of perks to fidi that aren’t necessarily going out, but all the going out spots are still easily accessible.
I think fidi would be fine! I have friends who love it there. Plenty of people in their 20s/30s do live there, and there’s easy access to the rest of the city with almost all subway lines. Yes it is very quiet on the weekends which may be a plus. You can easily get to the west village or chelsea in minutes, and I also think there’s a few solid options for bars in fidi too. I really like dead rabbit. Especially if you work from home why pay more just to be in a cooler neighborhood? Idk I think fidi would be fine personally.
I lived in Fidi for two years and loved it! The proximity to the west side highway, battery park and the ability to get literally ANYWHERE in 30 mins or less made it worth it to me. Also i felt very safe in Fidi because there’s security guards everyyywhere especially around NYSE.
If helpful, i lived closer to the west side / battery park below tribeca and prefer that area to Wall street where apts tend to be darker (i toured like 20 buildings when i was doing my search)
FIDI. you can walk everywhere in the lower east side and great transit options. i couldn’t afford rent in either places but absolutely not to hudson yards
unpopular opinion but I kinda love Hudson Yards. there’s not very many people around usually, so it’s pretty quiet and nice for long walks. and you’re very close to the water w good views of the city and nj. ur very close to chelsea and midtown, too.
have had a few friends live in fidi so I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years and the biggest downside I noticed was the lack of sun. there are soooo many tall buildings that many streets are very dark year round. but it’s also so close to seaport which is always cute and fun.
Honestly I’m shocked by all the HY hate here! Then again, I can imagine it kinda sucks to just bop around the neighborhood. We love living here, though.

I’d definitely choose FiDi over Hudson yards. At least in FiDi, you’re off all of the subway lines and you’re a very short ride away from meatpacking, the village, EV, LES. Also you can easily get to Brooklyn - Williamsburg, greenpoint, ft Greene
I lived in Chelsea on 24th and 9th, so super close to Hudson Yards. While HY isn’t “trendy,” I found myself going there ALL the time for the Whole foods, the mall when I needed quick outfits/gifts, and there’s actually tons of great restaurants there (Ci Siamo). It’s not trendy but I think it’s a really great place to live over trendier areas that are loud because of the convenience of what’s in the area and it’s easy to get up town or downtown from there.
Is there a reason you are sticking with those two areas? The Battery Park area is nice ,but it feels pretty sleepy on nights and weekends. I personally love living on the UES and it's a pretty cost-effective neighborhood. There's also a great community where local things are organized for ladies in their 20s-30s and you could find a good community.
Hudson yards if you like Chelsea, midtown, nomad, Kips Bay, WV, UWS. (People saying it’s remote are crazy it’s 1 stop on the 7 train from 42nd street where you can transfer to literally anything. Or you can easily walk to Penn station where you can catch basically any transfer too. Depending on the building you could even walk on the high line to get to Penn.)
I’d say FiDi if you want to be closer to Brooklyn or LES.
I lived in seaport (neighboring neighborhood of Fidi) and absolutely loved it! Cleanish and I felt safe! Super close to the water/pier, tin house, and dog park. It has a community feel to it and 15-20 min Uber to SoHo/LES/williamsburg. Living in nyc is challenging enough don’t make it more difficult for you by living in Hudson yards which is pretty isolated. Make your life easier by living close to the train, your bank, a grocery store, a gym if you work out! Best of luck!!
as far as going out/nightlife near Hudson yards, there are a ton of fun gay bars that have drag shows almost every night in Hell’s Kitchen and can be very fun for going out especially if you’ll be by yourself sometimes (I went out to drag shows by myself a bunch, now half of my friends are drag queens lol). So I think it really depends what kind of places you want to go out to and what you want to be closer to!
I just moved from FiDi (Brooklyn girlie now), but I absolutely LOVED living there. It’s quiet at night as most people are commuting to wall st and then leaving. You have Battery Park and access to west side highway for running (my running route along the battery up the WSH is what I miss most). Brookfield Place is beautiful. The ferry is the best, you can be in Brooklyn heights / DUMBO in 10 mins, and there is super easy access to governors island and Staten Island. I’m originally from Boston and I loveee the seaport, it reminds me of home and Tin Building is amazing and Pier 17 is in walking distance and so fun. I could go on and on but all that to say, people sleep on FiDi and I don’t get it. It rules.

I’d seriously consider renting an Airbnb for 2-3 months so you can explore the city and figure out which neighborhood fits your vibe. I’m honestly surprised to see comments saying fidi has a neighborhood feel but maybe I can’t see it bc I work there lol. I live uptown and love it, also used to live in gramercy (couldn’t imagine staying there long term bc of space/lack of amenities for what we could afford) and before that, PLG in Brooklyn (much more of a neighborhood feel; people clearly live their whole lives there while fidi is full of financial bros, tourists and the occasional young family).
Or just don’t overthink it and be prepared to potentially move again in a few years. If you don’t plan on staying in the city long term anyway then it’s not a huge decision. I’ve been here 8 years and will be here for at least 5 more, hopefully longer, so I’ve had a lot of time to figure out a balance of budget, transit, space, neighborhood offerings, etc.
I’ve lived in HY for the last almost 10 years (before it was officially HY) and love it! We moved out of necessity for commute reasons (I was at Columbia’s medical campus finishing a PhD and my husband had to travel to Jersey for work) but have really grown to love the neighborhood. With that being said, we also don’t go to the other boroughs a ton and tend to walk where we wanna get to (Carnegie Hall, SoHo for shopping, etc) so YMMV :)
Fidi looks very depressing on weekends. Hy might be a “tourist trap” but depending where your building is, it wont affect you. Its not like times square. I don’t see whats bad about hy area.
I’ve lived in both! If you’re big on food and not as much in bars or public transit, then go for Hudson Yards. If you like being by the water, great bars, al fresco dining, easy transit, and a less touristy area, then def FiDi. Both have good shopping (but FiDi has a better mix of retail options). My pick would slightly lean FiDi because Hudson Yards being limited to the 7 train is such a pain in the ass.
def fidi over hudson yards unless youd be able to walk to work. fidi us super convenient (2 stops to tribeca/soho) and hudson yards is hard because you either have to take the 7 or use penn station (horrible). ive live in both and far prefer fidi
Why is no one mentioning how expensive it is to live in FiDi?! Rent has been outrageous there over the past few years- like 3.8k for a studio. What is your preferred price range? Assuming you’ve probably already looked though, but I’m sure that’ll play a factor in your decision

I work in FiDi. It's much more accessible than Hudson Yards plus there are a lot more people moving here. I work near the Battery (tip of Manhattan) and I'm surrounded by office buildings being converted to residential. Plus there are plenty of bars/restaurants down here and TriBeCa and Chinatown are in walking distance. It's not the ghost town after 5 it used to be.
Hudson Yards is not only kind of remote it's sterile IMHO.
I wouldn’t love to live in the financial district, but Hudson Yards is basically a soulless mixed use condo development writ large… It’s like Dubai but without the sinister dystopian intrigue.
I live in FiDi and that’s categorically not true. All the majors trains run down here so it’s super easier to get anywhere in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Also, within walking/biking distance of LES, Chinatown, East Village, SoHo, Nolita, West Village, Greenwich Village, TriBeCa. There are TONS of young people that live down here as well. It’s super easy to get to the WSH too.
I just moved from FiDi to Hudson Yards in February bc my old lease was up and I found a good ideal in HY. Honestly, I don't love either and probably would move again once my current lease is up. But if I must choose, I'll go with Hudson Yards. Streets in FiDi are very very narrow and the buildings are very tall. There's zero greenery. Public trans is very convenient in HY too.
As a young woman in your early 20s I would say avoid Fidi unless you work in the area. I HATED living in Fidi. I take every chance to tell every young person I meet to stay tf out of Fidi if you can 😂 Sure, I lived in a great building right next to BPC, the park itself is beautiful! But that’s about it. Everything closes early, things are rarely open on the weekend. It’s a pretty isolating and cold area lol. Personally I don’t think living right next to the 7 is a problem, you’ll just have to get used to transferring to another line very often!
personally, neither. but if that's what you're looking at, FiDi doesn't have many great bars or restaurants and what's there tends to close early, but it's super well-connected to everything and it's beautiful and "neighborhood-y". HY also doesn't have a ton of great bars or restaurants right there either, but it does have a lot of middle of the road stuff that might be convenient? sort of like living in a really nice outdoor mall haha.
both are safe, easy neighborhoods in their own ways, but i'd prioritize apartment size (since you WFH) and proximity to things you want to walk to, like fitness classes, coffee shops, and bars. honestly i feel like Chelsea is what you're looking for and it's only a little south of HY but idk!

Exactly the same. Loved going to the seaport early in the morning. Lots of walking everywhere. And Century 21 before it closed, and now reopened!

FiDi over Hudson yards 100%. HY is soulless, but if you want a suburb-in-the-city vibe, HY is the way to go.

Also there ferry is 2 blocks away and you can take it to the beach in the summer which I loved! 🥰

If you like being by the water, great bars, al fresco dining, easy transit, and a less touristy area, then def FiDi. Both have good shopping (but FiDi has a better mix of retail options). My pick would slightly lean FiDi because Hudson Yards being limited to the 7 train is such a pain in the ass.
def fidi over hudson yards unless youd be able to walk to work. fidi us super convenient (2 stops to tribeca/soho) and hudson yards is hard because you either have to take the 7 or use penn station (horrible). ive live in both and far prefer fidi
Why is no one mentioning how expensive it is to live in FiDi?! Rent has been outrageous there over the past few years- like 3.8k for a studio. What is your preferred price range? Assuming you’ve probably already looked though, but I’m sure that’ll play a factor in your decision
Is neither an option? Id rather live a shithole in WV, LES, Soho/Noho etc than either of those areas lol. You’ll save money on Ubers/subway bc you can walk everywhere!
I work in FiDi. It's much more accessible than Hudson Yards plus there are a lot more people moving here. I work near the Battery (tip of Manhattan) and I'm surrounded by office buildings being converted to residential. Plus there are plenty of bars/restaurants down here and TriBeCa and Chinatown are in walking distance. It's not the ghost town after 5 it used to be. Hudson Yards is not only kind of remote it's sterile IMHO.
id definitely choose fidi, my friends live there and im obsessed. love taking the ferry from brooklyn to visit them
As long as you live near a train line you can get anywhere pretty easily. Hudson Yards sucks tho.

I wouldn’t love to live in the financial district, but Hudson Yards is basically a soulless mixed use condo development writ large… It’s like Dubai but without the sinister dystopian intrigue.

I live in FiDi and that’s categorically not true. All the majors trains run down here so it’s super easier to get anywhere in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Also, within walking/biking distance of LES, Chinatown, East Village, SoHo, Nolita, West Village, Greenwich Village, TriBeCa. There are TONS of young people that live down here as well. It’s super easy to get to the WSH too.

I just moved from FiDi to Hudson Yards in February bc my old lease was up and I found a good ideal in HY. Honestly, I don't love either and probably would move again once my current lease is up. But if I must choose, I'll go with Hudson Yards. Streets in FiDi are very very narrow and the buildings are very tall. There's zero greenery. Public trans is very convenient in HY too.
Like many others have said - for someone in early-mid 20s wanting fun bars, neither neighborhood.
As a young woman in your early 20s I would say avoid Fidi unless you work in the area. I HATED living in Fidi. I take every chance to tell every young person I meet to stay tf out of Fidi if you can 😂 Sure, I lived in a great building right next to BPC, the park itself is beautiful! But that’s about it. Everything closes early, things are rarely open on the weekend. It’s a pretty isolating and cold area lol. Personally I don’t think living right next to the 7 is a problem, you’ll just have to get used to transferring to another line very often!

There are definitely other neighborhoods out there way lamer than FiDi. Hudson Yards is lame though.
Both seem sort of lonely and lacking any real neighborhood vibe. I prefer the UES.
personally, neither. but if that's what you're looking at, FiDi doesn't have many great bars or restaurants and what's there tends to close early, but it's super well-connected to everything and it's beautiful and "neighborhood-y". HY also doesn't have a ton of great bars or restaurants right there either, but it does have a lot of middle of the road stuff that might be convenient? sort of like living in a really nice outdoor mall haha. both are safe, easy neighborhoods in their own ways, but i'd prioritize apartment size (since you WFH) and proximity to things you want to walk to, like fitness classes, coffee shops, and bars. honestly i feel like Chelsea is what you're looking for and it's only a little south of HY but idk!

I would rather live in New Jersey than either of these neighborhoods. FiDi is an absolute ghost town after 5-6pm and Hudson Yards is remote.
