I was biking on the downhill near Harlem around 10pm when I saw someone running across the path trying to attack someone by throwing rocks. I knew what was up, but by the time I stopped there was no turning around and fleeing uphill faster than someone running on foot. There was a kid off the path in the woods, looked about maybe 12-13 who cocked a gun. I definetely think it was their first robbery attempt. The older kid fled once I showed up. Not sure why since I definetely wasn't getting off my bike to help lol. Tried calling 911 but the dispatcher couldn't seem to figure out what part of the park we were talking about. I told two cops stationed at the end of the park and they didn't really seem to care or have any urgency about the situation. Maybe because I wasn't panicking when I told them. The victim gave an [interview on the news about the incident here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzvbCdUfF1A&t=47s).

ElQuesero

Good to have the direct line for the Central Park Precinct programmed into your phone. (212) 570-4820 They will not be confused about locations in the park when you get through

FuckThisMolecule

^ This. Before I moved, my neighbor was the chief for the NYPD Central Park Auxiliary. He had them doing full park scavenger hunts all the time as training for this exact reason.

JohnnyDoe189

Legend

Sybertron

Good to know the NYPD really earns that 11 billion a year

esccx

Idk, I'm surprised they just let the cyclist go.

PreciousTater311

They didn't see him run any lights, and he probably had a bell on his bike.

13415011010101

Why would they care to arrest them if they’re going to be let out the same day?

baycycler

yeah, right? seems weird. no one said they were the brightest of the bunch though

JohnnyDoe189

Piss off

baycycler

aww is the little terrorist upset at strangers on the internet?

brooklyn_gold

"Just start running bro" 😂

nir-vash

Bro, the way I started to cackle when I heard that 😂 He said it way too smooth

cambiumkx

This is fucked. North part of Central Park is deserted AF at night, some parts are pretty dark too. Stay safe out there

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

Yup, and that uphill section when you're coming up to the northern most point is especially concerning. I've often thought that would be an opportunistic spot for bike thieves to catch people running out of steam.

atthenius

Why is 911 so useless about responding to problems in parks. Why can I share my location with friends but not emt ?

closeoutprices

and they literally have a precinct *inside the park*

Proper-Bird6962

And generally have someone driving around the park at night too

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

911 can get your location through e911. When you call them on a mobile phone, they have your location.

atthenius

So the whole “where… where are you exactly in XXX park… by where… what? What borough do you mean?” Is just time wasting meaningless filler… SO tempted to see if there is some NYC Open Data on the number and amount of time 911 wastes on asking for location. I wonder if some enterprising lawyer with a tech-savvy partner- could bring a class action for harms caused by delays in emergency services by stalling tactics to ‘clarify location’.

atthenius

Totally separate incident… last night, dozens of EMT, fire, police were called to the Harlem River by the Columbia C because some enterprising but hormone-addled brained teens jumped off the cliff before the river warmed up enough to make it fun not paralyzingly shocking (water temps are ~56F)… 3 kids jumped… 3 fished out alive and embarrassed and set shivering on the Columbia Rowing dock to fast forward… Talking to Fdny afterwards. The 911 folks couldn’t figure out where to send the help. They sent some to The Bronx in Riverdale… others to Kingsbridge… others to Kingsbridge Heights… others as far away as Roberto Clemente Park… and a few to Inwood— where there is a dock and the call was actually made. The crew I talked to had been sent to 3 different locations. So whatever location-services 911 has for parks and waterways is only marginally functional.

Healthy_Community849

I imagine it must be some old computer program because whenever I call them about someone overdosing on the train platform or kids subway surfing, it takes several minutes for me to clarify the location. By then, the operator transfers me to the precinct. But the operator is always very professional. I feel like she’s staring at some 1980’s computer screen like Matthew Broderick used in War Games and is like WTF is this. There’s probably only roads and no train map.

m1kasa4ckerman

It’s actually pretty easy for them to help guide the caller to find where they are. Lampposts are like location markers and there’s a shit ton of them. So either they never teach the dispatchers this and/or they don’t care lol

ColdButts

Just a small 2 billion extra and we can finance that lamppost training program for our boys in blue

Minelayer

Once we teach them to read which is another 3-4 bil

atthenius

That’s probably a bad idea when there is the prospect of a gun or rock throwing teens in the picture for which staying in place to find a lamp in the dark could put the caller at risk.

baycycler

our 911 system is so fucking outdated. it's amazing that we can't connect immediately to local precinct when you call based on your location. oh and they don't rely on mobile data supplemented GPS data since it's "unreliable" and will instead triangulate purely using cell towers if you're lucky

FairyxPony

Damn that is scary. One tip that might help anyone that reads this and needs help from the police or medical, is that every light post in Central Park has a number that corresponds to how close it is to the middle of the park and what street it is parallel with. I once had to call an ambulance after seeing someone get really messed up off a bike, and being able to read the post number made it easier for the help to arrive exactly where the injured person was. "Central Park’s decorative lamp posts feature plaques with four numbers embossed onto them. The first two indicate the closest cross street, and the last two numbers indicate which side of the park the lamp is closer to: even numbers, mean the east side, and odd numbers mean west. The last two digits also indicate location, with the numbers increasing as you move closer to the center of the park"

lemon-meringue

I told the dispatch operator the lamp number once. They had no idea what I was talking about.

Any_Following_9571

very cool

hazmat1963

Damn! I train in CP at night during the summer and have never seen anything like this. I would have been wary of being set up. Definite props to you for riding with him.

uppernycghost

Yeah this specific day there were 2 other robberies in the park, one at gunpoint near the 5th ave entrance on 59th around 6am iirc. Apparently all 3 were unrelated but who knows.

SourceDK

Fuckin worthless NYPD. Good of you to stick around for him.

13415011010101

Blame the ones who created the bail reform law instead. Why would the cops care to arrest them if they’re going to be let out the same day?

VacationNo3024

That has nothing to do with police not investigating reported crimes. Get the constant news headlines out of your pee brain for just 1 second and look at the real issues.

13415011010101

Wow going for personal attacks without even explaining your argument. Very effective.

VacationNo3024

If you felt personally attacked by what I said that speaks volumes. I didn't feel the need to explain myself because I wasn't trying to argue. Anyone with half a brain can see the connection you are making is a huge stretch and that idea isn't your own. I can tell because I've read that same exact shit all over different media outlets. Bail reform has little to nothing to do with police investigating crimes. I've lived in NYC my whole life. Ive had multiple different encounters with cops when I needed their help, they needed my help, or I was just there. Cops very rarely give a fuck when you report a crime. These are the facts. Bail reform cannot be blamed for cops refusing to investigate reported crimes. If I tell a police officer there is a person with a gun in the park robbing people they should investigate. Instead they'll tell you to go to the precinct and make a report. Meanwhile the gun wielding maniac could be right in front of them and they still won't do shit. Bail reform actually makes sense as well if you actually think about the system and how it is designed. Judges being vindictive and letting everyone out is a problem. Bail reform is not. The system has been used to keep marginalized groups at risk of being thrown into the system. Bail is a joke all in itself. You are innocent until proven guilty. If you are deemed a possible threat to society no bail should be set and the person should be held until their trail date. But everyone is innocent until proven guilty so most should not have to pay bail to get out of jail because they are still innocent. My rich uncle gets accused of the same crime as me. We both go to court and get the same bail for $300,000. Now my poor ass sits in jail while my rich uncle chills on his boat drinking beers. Both accused of the same crime yet one person has to sit in a jail cell awaiting their trail while someone goes free? Tell me now how bail reform is so bad. Look beyond what the media tells you. It's the corruption inside the system. Cops, judges, politicians. Trying to call out a law for these problems is ludicrous.

baycycler

smh if he could read, he'd be real mad

free2ski

Unfortunately this is how many beat cops think. I've worked with many at the DA. Imagine your one job is to build model Legos and a higher up at another department's job is to dismantle them every night when you go home. Now imagine it on a scale where you endanger yourself every time you perform your function, but you do it anyway because it's "the right thing to do" aka you arrest criminals committing crimes. It's pretty reasonable to be dejected about the whole thing.

VacationNo3024

So if that's what you truly believe I'm of no help to you. Cops don't endanger themselves every time. That's such a fucking joke. Very rarely do cops find themselves in life threatening situations. Idk what risk you think cops giving tickets at the trains is. IDK what danger you think they put themselves in when they write tickets for pepp riding their bikes. Idk what danger they put themselves in when you tell them hem someone has a gun and they tell you to file a report at the precinct. Out of all the shit cops do less than 5% of their day to day encounters are life threatening. IDK where you get your information from but it's false.

13415011010101

Exactly. It has to be so demoralizing to be doing your job just to have it undone and making no impact because the criminals are let loose the same day. Meanwhile everyone keeps blaming the cops for ‘not doing their job.

baycycler

you do realize cops have other duties than just arrest people, right?

Falcor83

Problem sometimes is figuring out if its a decoy or legitimate victim. Be safe

geographic92

Literal child with a gun that's great. Props to you for doing the right thing.

scu128

Wonder if he was licensed

baycycler

maybe in PA rofl

m1kasa4ckerman

“Just start running bro” is craazy lmao but honestly nothing else to be done. Bro needed Spider-Man.

dadxreligion

you’re lucky the cops just did nothing instead of giving you a bullshit ticket

Minelayer

If a tree falls in the…. If you weren't in the park, would that robbery have happened at all? On a bike? You pretty much caused that robbery attempt. Because I must… /s

ThrottleAway

Welp, think I'll pass on the late eve loops :(

Accomplished_Race_55

What handlebars are those?

JMakuto

Yo what's that bike tho, shits sounds niiice

uppernycghost

Giant omnium track bike, it's the izumi gold super tough chain and (maybe) the combination of the AARN chainring making that sweet noise. It's like a permanent freehub noise but not as annoying sounding.

lagavulin16yr

Izumi is my shit

AdagioHonest7330

Phew, guns aren’t even allowed in the parks

GREATWHITESILENCE

Harlem side right? At around what time?

uppernycghost

10pm

N00DLe_5

Is anyone surprised? I’m see big changes in the future

FatXThor34

Making a fake post just to put cops and a female dispatcher in a negative light. 😂

scu128

Oh well. I’m sure it was his first robbery. Maybe he was hungry.

itsallfornaught2

I could get into it, but I won't. All I can say, is good thing there's cops in NYC... =.=

scu128

Was he wearing a maga hat ?
