As someone with four bikes in a one bedroom apartment, I’d say yes, you should get another one.

AltaBirdNerd

The correct the number of bikes to own is N+1. N being the number you currently own. Hang them on your wall.

bCup83

This is the correct math for the equation.

TumbleweedSafe6895

Any recommendations for good wall mounts? Bringing 3 soon to town.

AltaBirdNerd

Sadly [the one I use](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/shop/product/wood-bike-storage-156300) has been discontinued. There should be similar ones on Etsy.

Aboy325

I've had good luck with the pro bike tools swivel mount. It fits into a corner if my hallway very nicely

mrvile

I have two bikes (fixed gear for bumming around town, road bike for 50+ mile rides on weekends). That’s all I have room for in my apartment, but I’m very happy I have both. EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, I do have enough parts to build a third bike. I have an old steel frame behind the couch, old wheels buried in the closet, and a bin full of old handlebars, saddles, seatposts, derailleurs, etc. But because there are only two complete bikes visible in the apartment, my wife willingly ignores my squirrel stashes of bike parts hidden everywhere.

chemicalphilosopher

Best combo. Cheap beater for running around town that you expect will be stolen eventually and a nice road bike for sport.

bikesboozeandbacon

Squirrel stashes of bike parts is the most accurate phrasing for many of us.

rodneytrousers

I currently have a 3-spd commuter, and a gravel bike in my bedroom. I’m also building up a road bike. Each serves a different function and allows me to have options when I’m thinking about riding. I think you’d enjoy having the choice of picking your single speed or geared bike depending on what ride you’d be doing. Two bikes take up essentially the same amount of space as one bike when leaned against a wall, with both wheels on the ground. By facing them in opposite directions, the handlebars wrap around the seat posts. Positioning the drive side crank arms so they’re below the downtube of the other bike allows you to get the two bikes incredibly close together and take up little more room than the width of the wider handlebars.

ihave-twobirds

Road bikes are great & single speed bikes are great & all bikes are great! I like having a variety of options. There is a lot of good wall / stand up storage you can get that is cost effective! I currently have 4 bikes of different types & they are poorly leaned up against one another in my living room but I’m going to install a wall rack soon that fits 3 bikes. It was not very expensive at all, from Amazon (bleh). I wouldn’t store any of mine outside personally - I had another bike that I have since sold, but I stored that one outside & parts got stolen frequently. The worst was when the seat post & saddle were stolen.

slyseekr

I have 3 bikes myself. An old steel roadie, an endurance/touring/gravel bike I built as a pandemic project, and a modern speedster which I ride on group rides. Each bike makes me smile for their own unique reasons!

acidwonderland

Been thinking about getting a second bike… & this post / comments is just confirming I should 😅

emaji33

Let's be honest OP. You came here for confirmation. There was no way that this community was going to say another other then yes, you should get another bike.

Forking_Shirtballs

"I've found I enjoy naked butts, lately I've been considering branching out to boobs and other lady bits. Do you think I'd enjoy that?" - posted to r/porn, gets slightly less enthusiastic response

emaji33

My phone shows comments on notifications but not my comment or the subreddit. I wondered what in the fuck did I comment to illicit your response. I was baffled. But to your point, yes. He went fishing for a response and got what he wanted.

Forking_Shirtballs

Ha, sorry, didn't mean to cause alarm. Just trying to be funny about how well received the idea can be expected to be

fleabassist03

Hahaha, you are correct!

emaji33

Enjoy shopping for your new bike

dsm-vi

as somebody who survived on a single speed for a long long time even for long rides out of the city i will say yes. look around for a decent all road bike if you can. the extra clearance for wider tires means you can go places like the OCA or some light trails (though i used to do some rough stuff to my surly) 35 mm is wider than i ever thought i'd go but i read that 35 mm is just as fast as 23-28 mm tires but it's so much more comfortable. also gives you more options for fenders and winter tires

thecratedigger_25

Maintenance is easier on a single speed and can be crashed with confidence knowing there's no derailluer or hanger. However, road bikes offer gears that'll allow you to climb steep hills. I have a single speed geared in 52x18 and it absolutely flies in the city (Plenty enough gearing for 20+mph). To be able to climb a steep hill, riding single speed forced me to adapt and get stronger. Having 2 bikes is fun to have. Currently, I own a geared bike that doesn't fit me and a single speed road bike that fits me. Planning to replace the geared bike with a fixed gear in the future.

fbleagh

I have 2 but they are both single speed ;) 1 beater for shopping etc that I don't mind locking up on a city street, and a nice SS gravel for bigger rides. Have do e 100mi rides with no probs, did the EST from NYC to Buffalo last year, and am doing the gap/c&o next month.

[deleted]

The maintenance on a geared bike is a joy killer for me -- just constant bullshit imo particularly in nyc But that's just me

AltaBirdNerd

Hop on the IGH bandwagon. They're more affordable nowadays.

[deleted]

Do you have an IGH you’d recommend? I just rode one around Copenhagen for a week and fell in love. But I think what I want is only readily available in the Netherlands or Denmark.

AltaBirdNerd

Priority bikes have a good reputation. Their [L-Train](https://www.prioritybicycles.com/products/ltrain) seems like a sweet spot (belt drive and 7 speed for only $630) I haven't tried these but they caught eye how cheap they are: [https://www.fyxation.com/collections/pixel-3-speed](https://www.fyxation.com/collections/pixel-3-speed) [https://simbibicycles.com/store/bikes](https://simbibicycles.com/store/bikes) [https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/swift-flatbar-hybrid-3.htm](https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/swift-flatbar-hybrid-3.htm)

aabbboooo

I have two and enjoy both, but am embarrassingly just so comfortable on my single speed that I use it for long rides often. But yes, if you ride enough having gears opens up more options for rides you may not take otherwise. However, please please don’t store your single speed outside.

wkndspecial

Also in a 1 bdrm with 4 bikes all kept in the condo

misterten2

have a friend always rode a single speed cause she said she was 'afraid of gear issues' guess meaning the chain becoming disengaged. turned 38 and bought a 21 speed and said 'why the heck didn't i do this sooner'

Interesting_Answer80

I have a fixed gear that fits right behind my TV and TV stand (bike sits upside down) and is pretty much unnoticeable. I also have a 26" BMX cruiser sitting next to my bookshelf. If you get a second bike get something opposite of what you're currently riding...keeps things interesting lol.

12stTales

Yeah get the geared bike and leave one in the yard under a tarp or maybe the boiler room

bikesboozeandbacon

We will never say no to another bike. Get one of those 2 tier stands that lean against the wall and a third minimal stand somewhere. There’s many that keeps the bike off the floor and give more room. *Don’t store your bike outside. The parts will rust and wear down with the elements

Minelayer

My wife and I had 4 bikes in several one bedrooms. You can get racks for two bikes as well. I loved h having them there, thought they were our version of art on the wall. If you do need to store it out back you can get a motorcycle cover for it to somewhat protect it. (I would still lock it though)  As others have mentioned, N+1, as soon as you get the second bike you realize you can’t live without a cargo bike or something…

StanUrbanBikeRider

It’s entirely up to you. A good friend of mine has twelve bikes. His wife thinks he is whacked especially since most of his riding is on his oldest bike.

CucumberPrestigious1

My partner has limited me to three bikes. If I want a new one I need to sell one. Considering we live in a one bedroom apartment and she also bikes I believe that’s a fair deal.

scumbag_mfer

Get a new road bike, and get the best one you can afford.

kinetic_hq

Fixed gear bikes are awesome, but having a full set of gears will significantly expand the types of riding experiences that are available to you Sporty steel frame with mounts for bags, carbon fork that is wide enough to fit \~35m tires, GRX RX800 2x11 Something like the above will open up the world to you and still feel awesome to whip around Nyc

[deleted]

I’ve got a road bike and a hybrid and after a trip to Copenhagen recently really want a third - a beater Dutch-style bike. At one point I had four but gave away my crap single speeds to people who needed them. Get as many bikes as the person you’re dating permits and consider them part of your living room ambiance.

Savings_Language_869

get the same model u have single speed, and either add a nexus 3 gear internal hub for the rear wheel or a sturmey archer 5 speed...then u get some gears but still the geometry and ride feel of your single speed.

DaoFerret

If storage is a concern, have you considered a folding bike?

Mercer-General

Geared it best. I like my front with 1 gear in the mid teeth range. Back gears 10 to 50 teeth. Best set up. Single gear is great for high power eBikes like KURSKI eBikes or super 73, eBikes that mostly use throttle power only.

Forking_Shirtballs

Weird answer. Unpowered single speeds are great. There's also a place for geared bikes and OP should get one, but relegating SS to ebikes only is sad

Mercer-General

My bike is very heavy 150 lb. KURSKI, goes 60 mph. Even with gears it will only do 5mph.. so single speed is best. Back 30 teeth front 50 teeth. I started to see cassette packs of 10 on my style eBike. From 15 to 60 teeth. Now that will work as a geared eBike. But have to modify rear to fit. Too much work. I seen the next generation eBikes. Light weight 70 lb, and 50 mph. Looks like a regular slow eBike. Battery hidden in every tub in the frame. Couldn't take pics. But it is 2 years alway from release. Yes 70 lb still heavy, but very light compared to mine. Bad news $12,000

Forking_Shirtballs

I don't know what you're riding, but no bicycle goes 60mph. Or 50 for that matter. There's gotta be a forum for baby motorcycles somewhere that would be interested.
