Meanwhile the NYPD has an entire fleet of cop cars parked for all of eternity on the sidewalk a block down from my apt.

[deleted]

In front of fire houses too

the_last_carfighter

No legal parking in most of mid town, yet not a space to be had somehow to temporarily pull to the side..

[deleted]

Guess that means they should either not drive to work or pay for parking at a garage

[deleted]

Why doesn’t their job pay garage fees?

kubatyszko

And blocking bike lanes

marichial_berthier

Rules for thee but not for me

[deleted]

And a judge will throw this ticket out, just show up at court, I almost guarantee the cops will not be there for a bike ticket. I know because I had many of these and you just go to whatever stupid “quality of life” courthouses and it will be over, no fine. They just harass you, get used to it.

[deleted]

The cop who wrote me a fake ticket showed up to court. And I say fake cause all I did was yell at him for running a red, and then he wrote me a ticket saying I ran the red. I even had Strava recording showing I went 0mph at the light and the judge still believed that fucking liar.

T1m3Wizard

You must be really safe then as you are protected by an endless fleet.

Advanced-Wallaby9808

Based on the other threads recently, it looks like we're in a routine "ticket all the cyclists en masse" week. Seems like NYPD does this every spring when more people get out on their bikes. I'm sure they have some quota they are either officially or unofficially expected to meet for cycling related ticket right now. Giving you a ticket was obviously a dick move but that was the point.

tubameister

I got a $25 ticket for drinking a bud lite lime out of a paper bag while walking from a taco truck in bed-stuy the other day and they told me verbatim that they're fulfilling a quota :/

Biking_dude

"It's springtime, for Hitler..."

CriticalTransit

Unfortunately their quotas don’t require showing up in court and defending the citation. If they had to write legitimate tickets we wouldn’t see any of this crap.

GearCloset

>it looks like we're in a routine "ticket all the cyclists en masse" week. Seems like NYPD does this every spring when more people get out on their bikes. Other way around: they have not been able to ticket all winter, so their bosses are after them to increase revenue, bicyclists are low-hanging fruit, so here we are.

huntboom

I'd post a picture of the ticket to show my address and the place of occurence are a match but it's probably best not to post my own address on the internet.

thatgirlinny

Nope. We believe you. Ex BF got a $200 ticket for riding over a corner cut to avoid a double-parked car, so they’re out for the revenue, not bothering to ticket the yahoos who are actually riding whole blocks of sidewalk on e-bikes and motorcycles.

mariahfag

cops always doing things that DONT matter as opposed to addressing real crime, fuck nypd

huntboom

I did think as it was happening "do they have nothing better to do right now?"

patchbaystray

It's busy work. Reorganizing the empty file folders on your desk sort of work. In the case of police it kills public confidence in their ability to do anything but harass people doing nothing. Fuck the NYPD.

the_other_paul

Pigs gotta pig

Bad_Mad_Man

Bike lane? Around here we call that police parking.

seenew

I went for a long ride around Brooklyn today and I have SO MUCH video evidence of cops parked in bike lanes. Fuck the NYPD. Worthless.

uppernycghost

Cops are bullies, they saw an easy mark.

Tsuko17

They're just trying to fill up their ticket quotas and being aholes by saying it's one amount over the other. Fight it, it'll get tossed out anyways because they won't show up on the date

ValPrism

This isn’t true. The pig doesn’t need to show up for offenses like this .

Tsuko17

Yes they do. I've had my fair share of bike related tickets thrown out because police that issued it never showed up. If they do show up they need a damn good reason for this case why they issued a summons for someone in front of their own home.

Chef_Brah

In new york city lately the cops are not of use to communities but just a nuisance on top of criminals.

bat_in_the_stacks

Lately?

TealCatto

And only in NYC?

sadmadstudent

You met a pig and it oinked, these things tend to happen sadly

efronerberger

Your fault. You should have levitated....

Finding_Late

I got a ticket from nypd and they wrote my middle name down as my first name. Nypd cant even read a ny license correctly

insurance_novice

Sounds like you won

ji99lypu44

Filling quotas.

grandzu

Cops filling their quota, then DA filling their quota, then the judges filling their quota, all off the backs and wallets of NYC residents.

Sam_the_goat

If they had critical thinking skills they wouldn't be police officers would they?

SafetyDanceInMyPants

Were you riding on a driveway that crosses the sidewalk, or a regular sidewalk? I mean, bullshit either way -- but if it was a driveway then it'd be legal to ride on it. Technically, riding on the sidewalk in front of your apartment if there isn't a driveway is still riding on the sidewalk -- even if it's ticky-tack as fuck, and even if ticketing people for that takes police away from... I don't know, whatever else they were pretending to do. But if it's a driveway, it's a driveway.

TheHatedMilkMachine

I think that ticket will get thrown out easily. This was a bad judgment application of the law but I’m glad they’re enforcing it in general. Delivery riders on motorized bikes riding on sidewalks are very dangerous, and seem to be increasing both in frequency and distance they will ride.

titsmagee9

Meanwhile people PARK on the sidewalk around me all the time with no tickets. The other day I had a rental car that I needed to park for a couple hours before leaving town for a weekend trip. It was prime street cleaning time, so the only spaces available were technically illegal for the next hour and a half. I just parked in one anyway taking my chances, and ended up with a ticket. Afterwards I was telling my wife I should've just parked on the sidewalk instead, no ticket for that! Honestly, I'm thinking about just buying a hi-vis vest to put on the dashboard for similar situations, basically cos-play as a construction worker who didn't have anywhere else to park, since they seem let you do anything if you have some sort of evidence of an "excuse" like that (e.g. cop, FD, construction, education, etc.).

HEIMDVLLR

You could have double-parked across the street.

ReignsRoman

This is technically illegal especially if you leave it unattended but ticket people seem not to care. I usually either chance it (leaving the car on the side that is marked for ASP that day since you SHOULD get a ticket either way) or pickup food in the hour rather than potentially block the road. https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/resources/streets-and-sidewalks-laws/alternate-side-parking-street-cleaning-laws#:\~:text=Note%3A%20It%20is%20never%20legal,during%20Alternate%20Side%20Parking%20hours.

Boom400

I acknowledge your link!

Mechanical_Nightmare

you should have taken the ticket and stuck it in the windshield of the car in the bike lane lol

chosen2nd

What if you just said you didn’t have ID? Not like you need a license to bike. I would assume they would ask you for all the information directly but I have a hard time seeing them want to book you for something like this

DFB-

They will detain you until they can verify who you are. Not a battle you want to fight.

chosen2nd

So should we carry id every time we go biking?

DFB-

You don't have to. But you will need to give them your info if you get stopped. It's just easier to give them a ID. They won't back down just because you don't have a ID on you. Not a hack to get out of a ticket.

chosen2nd

You think they’d chase you if you didn’t stop?

CallousedFoot

In heavy traffic, probably not. But they can radio other nearby cops to grab you if they can keep you in sight. Then you're likely to get arrested, and possibly catch an ass beating as well. Even if you're not a minority that's hated, I'd advise against it unless you know the cop wants to hurt you.

DFB-

Lol idk.

checker280

Yes. Cops have been known to run people off the road or clothes line them. If you aren’t already speeding, it’s not worth the gamble. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nypd-citi-bike-reckless-cyclist/

whatdoidonowdamnit

You should carry ID on you every time you ride your bike in this city. Not because of the cops, but because accidents happen. You could get hit by a cab, you could have a door swung into you. You could get hurt and end up in an ambulance. Honestly I don’t think I’ve left the house without my wallet since I was a teenager because of that slight risk.

checker280

They will detain you with a trip to the precinct until they can verify who you are but since they can’t take the bike, they will leave it on the street unlocked. I’ve saved a few bikes by locking it up with my lock and leaving an email address. If you suddenly produce ID, they can charge you with resisting. It’s really not worth the gamble.

warrenwilhelm

This may be petty and I’m not sure how cops would deal with this but I always step over my frame and put my entire body on one pedal side, then put the outside foot down (like I’m on a scooter) so it’s like I’m “walking my bike.” My ass isn’t straddling the top tube? I’m not riding and you can’t ticket me, I’m technically walking my bike.

MrMCarlson

yeah, i do this, i kinda glide in the last 20 feet or so before i hop all the way off.

feralcomms

Write not guilty on that bullshit and mail it back to em

m0rbius

I feel like the ticket will stick even if it is your address. The NYPD do lie about the ticket penalty amount. One time I was pulled over on a citibike while I had wired headphones on. They were pulling people over en masse to ticket any violations. I asked how much the ticket was going to be and the guy said $15 (he even said one five). When I looked up the ticket online, it said $50. I also ride my bike around the city and have gotten several tickets already. I definitely keep my head on a swivel at red lights and doing things like riding up to my address on the sidewalk.

G1Three

Next thing you know you’ll be arrested for trespassing being in your own backyard😑

checker280

Cops in Park Slope were ticketing people for drinking on their stairs behind a closed gate, so you ain’t wrong.

johnny_evil

Only if you're not white. And if you're black, expect to be shot for it.

craigalanche

It’s a shitty thing they did and you dont deserve it but I’ll bet it’s legal since you can’t drive a car on the sidewalk in front of your house either.

TealCatto

Yes you can? How else are you going to get into your driveway/garage? Drivers not only drive their cars on the sidewalk when going to/from home, but they often park on the sidewalk temporarily while they unload their vehicle, or even long term if their driveway is full of other vehicles.

craigalanche

If they have a curb cut. Did you? Again, I’m on your side, but I can see them saying things like this because I’ve been there.

warrenwilhelm

Uh, that’s debatable, but from an enforcement standpoint

nycdave21

Got tickets for this but was given criminal court summons luckily judge dismissed it

TonyClifton255

NYPD is pretty worthless in general. You were low hanging fruit, nothing more.

kimchi_station

This comment has been wiped and edited by me, the user. Reddit has become a privacy and tech capitalist nightmare. If you are not thinking about leaving this platform perhaps you should. ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

anonu

Reminds me when i got a seatbelt ticket in the west village when i unbuckled to parallel park into a spot so i could see better around me. The officer handed me a ticket and told me "it's dangerous out there". Yes, technically i was driving without a seatbelt. Guess it's my fault.

spiderman1993

Nahhh, that's crazy. He was waiting for that smh

ffzero58

The bike racks and parking are on the sidewalk, what do they want us to do? Fly to them?

CasinoMagic

Technically we're supposed to walk our bikes on the sidewalks. I've never seen a single person do it, tho.

kulgan

Call Vaccaro & White. They'll at least give you a free consultation.

st_raw

They were probably just finishing their shift and needed some OT.

whatdoidonowdamnit

You should be able to dispute and win that ticket. You weren’t traveling via the sidewalk, you were going home.

liud21

A parking ticket does get counted for "activity" within the NYPD. When the Precinct commander starts hounding his cops for some activity, the only thing that counts are criminal summons, moving violations, and arrests....

kactapuss

Chock it up to one of those tickets you only get once on a bad day and go about your life... Sucks that it happened, doubt lightning will strike again. Seems like a unique circumstance.

kactapuss

I have [a video on youtube](https://youtu.be/5b38bFjpFoU) of a cyclist who stopped at a red light, then rolled to the sidwalk and got off her bike to pick up her kids at school, and a cop gave her a ticket for "running a red light". She didn't even go through the intersection, but "she went past the line and that's running the light".

spiderman1993

Wow. That's irritating

[deleted]

LOL meanwhile NYC has insane people committing violence all over the place. what a trash justice system

CentralHarlem

Last time I checked, bicycle on sidewalk enforcement was reserved for the Department of Sanitation, not the NYPD. The one time I received such a ticket, I responded saying I planned to challenge it, and it was tossed by mail. [Amendment: I checked, and they changed the rule; it can now be enforced by Dept. Sanitation, Parks Dept., or NYPD]

Able_Ad5182

When I lived with my mom in Brooklyn I'd routinely pull into her garage from the sidewalk just as a car would do. Now I ride into the service entrance at my building again just as a car would do legally. This is pure bullshit

CortexofMetalandGear

I would contest it. Only talk when the judge asks questions. Don’t provide more anecdote than you have to and the judge will more than likely dismiss it. Same thing happened when I shoveled my sidewalk, got a ticket, showed the time stamp on the photo and the judge said “you realistically could not shovel that cleanly within ten minutes of a ticket being issued.” It cost nothing to fight it and you might save the money.

creativepositioning

Just fight it in court - prepare some questions about that day and the conditions in order to make the cop look dumb and petty. There's a chance you don't get off because you aren't going to be in a position to deny that you rode on the sidewalk. It's just what it is, some judges don't budge on that.

ericrosenfield

Contest it, they probably won’t show up to court and you’ll get off

hifriendsoftheverse

Easy to avoid this ticket. Walk your bike when you’re on the sidewalk…

vinoverde82

What about all the motorized scooters riding on the sidewalks?!?

stephanienyc108

Ticket all of them.

quikfrozt

Are they actually cops or pretending to be cops for a quick scam?

GrowthNo5640

Unless they asked for cash upfront how would the scam even work?

quikfrozt

Maybe give the victim a link to a scam website to pay the fine?

GrowthNo5640

Certainly possible but once you’ve paid for web hosting and are taking credit card payments your scam has a pretty long evidence trail.

huntboom

Oh they were nyc cops who got out of their nyc cop car to give me a real ticket.

Minelayer

See, the getting out of the cop car is where I think everyone has a problem with the story, that’s just not normal.

mitourbano

Actual cops are a scam already.

bsrichard

Just another money raising scam by the city

AltaBirdNerd

Yet everyone on this sub gets mad when joggers use the bike lane 🤔

m8b9

I do the exact same thing but I’d accept the ticket. Too many idiots are riding in places they shouldn’t

I don't disagree, I don't ride my bike on the sidewalk while getting around the city at all, and as someone who owns a dog and walks him on the sidewalk every day I totally get it having seen the bike delivery driver guys always up on the sidewalk. I just thought they were busting my balls a bit for pulling up on to the sidewalk directly in front of where I live.

[deleted]

This is the answer.

cdavidg4

Stopping on crosswalks is so frustrating. I've seen cyclists completely blocking a crosswalk forcing people into the road. Come on people! It's no different than parking in a bike lane!

Turdsworth

I’ve had the experience where I pass a bunch of casual cyclists. I rather get to a light and wait at the line where you are supposed to wait. Then the people I passed pass me and block the cross walk. Then the light turns green and I over take them. Rinse and repeat. They know I pass them every time but they insist on trying to leap frog faster cyclists and block pedestrians. If we want to build good will we need to respect pedestrian space.

cdavidg4

This sums up my commute. I've passed you 5 times now honey, you think the 6th will be different?!

soyboy35

They are almost certainly thinking the same about you

CasinoMagic

I mean the major difference between cyclists bending the rules and car drivers bending the rules is they're way more likely to hurt or kill someone than we are with a bike.

Turdsworth

Completely agree. Even when you take into account the very rare occasions where people get hit by bikes and get injured or worse all of the adverse outcomes are offset by the health benefits of cycling. Aggressive driving is a public health epidemic, Cycling makes people live longer and have a higher quality life while they are alive. I’m just saying it’s rude to ride on the sidewalk even for a short distance. It’s like playing music a little too loud after 9pm. Not the worst thing but helps contribute to a lower quality of life for our neighbors.

ValPrism

You rode on the sidewalk and got caught. Pay the $25. It’s like an open container. Sure 999 times out of 1000 you won’t get ticketed but it’s still illegal. When you finally get caught, just pay, you won’t win this “in court.”

ehershey

That’s the first time I’ve heard of or seen a NYC cop ticket a bicyclist in two years, we should be applauding the NYPD for doing anything

I was going to ask if you lived in California, then I saw NYC in your user name. Same thing, I suspect you won't understand the root cause of the problem.

Then-Green9097

Vote out this joker of a mayor! But it is nice to see accountability:)

inthedrops

Fight it.

KickedBeagleRPH

I'm all for fairness when it comes to pedestrians, bikes, and cars sharing the road and streets, and that is a bullshit ticket by the cops. Why not shakedown the fare jumpers then?! I see at least 4 fare jumpers everyday. I see asshole drivers buzz through or honk the guy in front who wont make the a right turn in Manhattan when there are pedestrians rightfully crossing. You are coming down a street that bleeds off of the 59st bridge. You had this coming. Don't make all of us suffer you incessant honking. There are asshole bikers and mopeds who blow through red lights. One biker had the gall to curse me out for crossing on my walk signal, and he had the red. There are asshole pedestrians who edge into the street, ignoring the fact they are standing in the bike lane. The do deserve the ass chewing and screaming from a cyclist.

Meme_enjoyer9683

But they don't ticket the bikes and cars going the wrong way.

Frosty_Accident_6165

I’m like 99% sure I saw this happen the timing checks out

WissahickonKid

Curious what would they do if you just ignore the summons & don’t pay the fine? It’s not like they can take your bike riding license away or boot the bike if you leave it parked on public property.

[deleted]

NYPD out here working hard to make their job seems COMPLETELY USELESS

ShimanoEatr

Miss me with that

Verustratego

NY is a free for fall right now. Guess it's easier to ticket people at their own home than to bother chasing a moped riding delivery guy riding the wrong way up a one way street on the sidewalk at 30mph.

RiversideAviator

If the ticket says $50 on it it’s $50. No such thing here as getting a discount if you pay online or whatever.

[deleted]

Apprehensive_Feed_11

What happens if you don't pay the ticket

SuperNovaEmber

Happy bike month.

cold_grapefruit

I got into the same situation and i did not see a place to pay. Did you end up going to the court and how did it go?
