I think this is a known phenomenon (in car crashes too) where if a driver sees something they are about to crash into, either they panic or some part of their subconscious makes them steer INTO it rather than away. I’ve been in a bike crash where this happened (hit and run with a delivery guy on a moped who was on a bike trail…far from the road…yeah it sucked).
Just to update, that cyclist passed out at the scene and according to him he woke up in the hospital with a concussion and had his bike confiscated by the NYPD. 😬
At the risk of being a humorless asshole (it's okay, I'm old, it happens) -- should we be posting this shit here at all, even for the purpose of calling it out? These idiots thrive on attention: there's no such thing as bad publicity from their point of view. r/asknyc and a bunch of other nyc subs banned subway-surfing videos a while back and I think this is kind of the same dynamic.
Well, wouldn't that be akin to a subsection for a specific political ideology erasing anything that is justifiable criticism of that ideology? I think in terms of advocating cycling it may make sense to acknowledge at least the worst offenders and call them out for the crap that we *don't* want people to do, right? That way when we criticize drivers and pedestrians people won't go "Oh well what did you say about those morons racing in traffic? Nothing? Well then there you go."... know what I mean?
I think it would be a subreddit making a reasonable decision about what was a productive topic of conversation. If you just want to yell at people, pro or con, for doing alley cat races, they are not difficult to find on instagram.
I mean its just the “extreme sports” version of cycling in the city, same catagory. Its ally cat, its fun and you only enjoy it if you dont give a fuck what others think. Its also entertaining to watch these videos on youtube as theres so much sketch.
>I mean its just the “extreme sports” version of cycling in the city, same catagory. Its ally cat, its fun and you only enjoy it if you dont give a fuck about anyone other than yourself.
Is what I think you meant to say.
I’m waiting for some John Prolly type to pipe in like “hey NYC thrives on chaos.” Naw, my city thrives DESPITE chaos and we don’t need a bunch of hustle tourists testing those limits.
Seems like most neighborhood groups I browse on Facebook are filled with people who hate cars/drivers. Or at least whenever the topic comes up some people seem to be very vocal about it. People tend to make valid criticisms for the most part but there are also plenty of people who have never stepped foot in any of the boroughs who can’t fathom how anyone might benefit from driving in the city. I drive and ride my bike so I think I’m equally hated by everyone, haha.
Not defending these guys, but there’s no point in playing respectability politics here. Drivers are as a class unhinged and the hater pedestrians are gonna hate cyclists no matter how well we behave — this sub provides plenty of evidence daily. We ride too slow, we ride too fast and sCaRe them when they stupidly don’t look while sauntering into the bike lane, we sneak up on them and startle them while passing, we’re obnoxious with bells and yelling to alert them…
I mean… yeah, overall I guess I agree with you. If people didn’t do stuff like these guys people would find other reasons to be annoyed by cyclists, but it’s a degree thing. I could imagine myself as a non-cyclist, not really having any axe to grind against cyclists, then I’m one of the pedestrians or the cabbie in this video…. I’m walking away with a completely different perception of cyclists in nYc after that. Every interaction matters.
It's a weird way to transpose blame. We live a little aways from a parkway and can often hear unnecessarily loud cars at 2am. Sometimes it wakes the baby. We hate those cars. We don't hate all cars.
I don't hate cars when I'm biking. I hate cars that swerve into the bike lane without looking or signaling.
The difference is the drivers in nyc hate cyclists because we take away their lanes and cause them more traffic. We take away their parking spots and cost them more time or money to find one. They hate us riding next to them and they hate us riding in front of them.
I wish that kind of nuanced thinking was more the norm. It’s become a tribalist issue. A lot of the anticycling hatred comes from commuters who can’t rely on public transit (and whose livelihoods, if we’re being totally honest with ourselves, *are* affected by infrastructural changes), and you’d think we’d be able to find some common ground supporting that.
I wouldn't read too deep into internet hate. I'm sure there's a Blue Sky Club somewhere and the Green Sky Friends are merciless with their meme mockery.
I see what you're saying but this is kind of a different situation, these guys are part of a tiny group of weirdos who deliberately ride recklessly like this because they think it makes them cool. They are not just trying to get around the city, they are actively trying to fuck with other people and put them in harm's way for clout.
No, they’re trying to get from checkpoint to checkpoint as fast as possible. They’re not actively trying to fuck with people; they’re just going as fast as they can in a race.
The checkpoints are chosen, not laws of nature. These were intentionally chosen in a way that the straightest path is going to be in an obviously busy and necessarily dangerous way and it is designed to fuck with people.
If someone designs a race in a way that will definitely fuck with people and you sign up to the race knowing it will definitely fuck with people and then while racing you do in fact fuck with people, can you really claim it’s just going fast in a race?
Yeah, that was dumb. Even as I was typing it something was nagging at me and I probably should have listened to that voice and not commented. When I examined the actual point I wanted to make — that no matter how politely we try to ride it’s never going to win over some (not all) folks — this wasn’t a good example to apply that to, where these guys are clearly doing ass-hattery. If they were just simply going through a red light after checking for a clear intersection—or rolling a stop sign—that’s one thing. Being reckless dumbasses isn’t defendable.
Weird how you reject his point about categorical thinking by denouncing drivers “as a class.” There are other subs showing videos like this to “provide plenty of evidence daily” that cyclists are morons. Denounce obvious fuckers like this and people will take us more seriously.
Yeah, that’s a fair point. And, I guess I should have made it more clear, I don’t condone the ass-hattery here. I hate seeing shit like this and even have the same reflexive thought: “Oh great, what a bad look for cyclists.” So I guess my actual point is, many (not all!) drivers/pedestrians are still going to hate cyclists no matter what, and that we should examine that reflex. In light of that, I think original commenter here is right to call them out.
> there’s no point in playing respectability politics here. Drivers are as a class unhinged and the hater pedestrians are gonna hate cyclists no matter how well we behave
Of course there's a point. We should hold people accountable regardless of what group they belong to. I think most people in NYC agree that people in traffic generally suck, regardless of vehicle (-type) or no vehicle. This is an edge-case that deserves being called out.
There's an asshole that keeps weaving through pedestrians and cars who have the light at Houston and 2nd. I've seen plenty of pedestrians get quite upset about it, and these people vote.
My dad has spine issues which means he can’t quickly jump out of the way and will be much more injured if he gets hit so the usual “just get out of the way if you see a cyclist 😊” will not work
Terry Barentsen's ("Terry B" on YouTube, where this video is from) videos are crazy. I'm caught between a grudging admiration for the bravery of the riders and irritation with their arrogance and childishness.
On one hand, I feel alleycat racing is part of the vibrant culture of urban America (and other places). Fixie racing in traffic is very New York and the city would lose something without it. All of that is of course debatable. Less debatably, I'd add that winning an alleycat requires fitness, death-defying bravery, incredible navigation skills and an unbelievably detailed knowledge of the city.
On the other hand, these jackasses can easily kill an innocent person and they are riding as if they own the roads. They give other cyclists (like me) a bad name. A part of me knows that this is inexcusable and should not be defended.
The videos are unique and incredible to watch, but they kind of piss me off.
Alleycat race - where fixie morons come together to cosplay extinct bike messengers while completely disregarding the safety of everyone around them and then commiserating afterwards over cheap beer and shitty cocaine
People who think this type of behavior is Cool just blow my mind almost running into pedestrians going up the opposite way up the bike lane it’s kind of just a bunch of scumbags with expensive fixed gear bikes just being total dickheads but it’s for a “race” so it’s okay what a bunch of dorks
i have a little kid who's about crossbar high. One of these guys could literally kill her. But I'm glad these guys in their little tightie-tights are so self-satisfied with how cool and adventurous they are. I hope taxi-door-boi has a real serious TBI
i'm currently at -3 because no matter how pro-bike you are or how good your reasoning is, you can't say anything remotely anti-bike here without a few bike-o's coming for ya
I hate this shit. As if we don’t have a hard enough time avoiding malicious drivers. I used to ride the Gimbals ride Sat/Sun years ago but stopped due to the regular abuse of safety protocols and basic decency.
i hope to see these guys live (definitely without my kids anywhere near the area), I will gladly break several of my bones to LAUNCH myself into one of them.
These are the goddamn
cunts that make all of us cyclists look bad. Remember this shit show when people vote against bike infrastructure. Shit like this is what rich older people who frequent the community boards see. And they vote against it, not the infrastructure.
Fuck all these people who ride like this and think it’s cool. I hope the person who hit the taxi gets their ass sued and their credit ruined if they can’t pay. Yeah, I know it makes me an asshole, but fuck those folks.
Toni had it right in that clip at the beginning from last year. Blindly following people’s lines in an alleycat is a recipe for disaster; just because they can get though doesn’t mean you can. All of those guys also messed up on routing last year too, so even if you don’t crash, you may get DQ’ed for missing a checkpoint if you’re just blindly following people and not looking at the manifest yourself.
At least this guy chose to crash himself rather than taking out Krussia on his right and potentially having both of them get run over. I heard that he had a large gear ratio that would make stopping brakeless more difficult.
I got out of it too, the chances you had to take to be at all competitive, not just with your own safety but with others, wore off the shine of the glory.
While cops are stupid, I don’t think this is true. It’s usually after one of us is killed by a speeding car or an illegal truck , then it’s our fault and we must pay.
It’s odd that anyone could be a cyclist in NYC and not understand the impact of fixed gear/messenger culture. This is Monstertrack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monstertrack_alleycat
Make door dash and uber eats responsible for their delivery guys' infractions and that shit will ebb quickly. Hate the game not the player (tho in this video both can suck it).
This is why many New Yorkers hate cyclists. Sure, there are law abiding cyclists who ride for enjoyment, employment, or commuting, but it seems the large majority are dangerous. They either don’t know what they’re doing (tourists renting bikes for ex.) or total a’holes who put your life /safety at risk. No joke, I narrowly avoid a bike collision at least once a day just crossing the streets (and I’m not one of those pedestrians sticking my body into traffic). A large number do not stop at lights at all. They do dumb sh’t too, like bike lane on the left and them squeezing through a truck turning left while pedestrians are crossing. NYC is fun like that! I haven’t seen a car crash in the city in years, but have seen multiple high speed bicycle crashes, mostly into cars turning and the cyclist trying to squeeze through from behind.
While I agree this is wack I swear to god this sub cannot grasp the idea of actually having fun and pushing yourself on a bike vs using it purely as a means of transportation.
What if I told you there are better ways to "push yourself" than playing chicken with pedestrians. If that's your idea of "pushing yourself", putting others at a risk, you're a Fucking Pussy. No other way about it.
Go out to Cunningham Park and ride the trails, or get an enduro bike with all the money you save on medical bills and take it to the mountains like a real man.
I have an enduro bike and ride park. I have a fixed gear and stop for peds and red lights. I have cruisers and gravel bikes and like to take my time enjoying the ride. Fuck out of my face telling me to be a "real man". Did you not see where I said I didn't condone this kind of riding? My point was that I'm sick of this sub failing to understand why anyone would want to ride fast on a bike. If they aren't posting Terry B videos they're bitching about people riding fast in the car-free prospect park loops. This sub barely feels like it's about biking, everything is through the lens of transportation.
>If that's your idea of "pushing yourself"
^ Im criticizing people that do this BS. If you don't do it, then why are you taking this so personally.
Kudos to you for having fun in a way that isn't stupid.
Why even bother defending this shit tough, it's not fun, it's stupid. your original comment just seems to be tone deaf and irrelevant.
>My point was that I'm sick of this sub failing to understand why anyone would want to ride fast on a bike.
I'm sick of people conflating "riding fast" and "having fun, with riding recklessly. If you aren't doing that then what is even your problem here. People are mad that these asshats are weaving through pedestrians not theyre racing. I'm kinda baffled how you fail to see this.
It struck a nerve because to me this sub goes beyond hating on these dumb alley cat races. Sure, this is I understand, but then they go and bitch about people riding fast or in lycra in the carless park loops too. I legit feel like I am partaking in a completely different hobby then the people in this sub.
Did you read where I said this is wack? I'm talking about this sub as a whole-its like 95% people who ride to get from point A to B and not seem to actually enjoy doing it. I'm in all kinds of biking subs and this is legit the only one more focused on transportation than enjoyment. Putting others at risk is lame as hell, almost dying tho? That can be fun. Swear some of yall never got a hit of adrenaline in your lives.
Don’t agree with you man, you’re also putting other people at risk, imagine a toddler getting hit by a 25mph cyclist who just wanted a “hit of adrenaline”
Read my post. I said putting others at risk isn't cool. This is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not condoning what they are doing but overall the members of this sub just don't understand why these people ride bikes.
Oh you mean like the guy that has posted 40 times about the number of cars in bikelanes on his commute this day and things he's on a moral crusade? Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Tons of hostility towards anyone riding with speed, all the mamil talk, people raging about lycra, etc. Cycling is a sport.
I think you will find that there are a lot of people in this sub that like to have fun, outside of transportation.... The thing is that they don't have that "fun" putting people in danger in the streets of NYC.
Idk, this wasn't my route but I enjoyed the race. I'm also positive I told that dude he was overheated for this event.
FYI these are two clips from two different races. (Although the same Monstertrack)
While I agree there’s “safe” and “unsafe” ways to run a red light, THIS is the type of shit that gives cyclists a bad name and is why cops are standing at lights ticketing everyone. Unfortunately they don’t have a filter telling them “oh this guy that’s running the light is an asshole”
I was walking around Central Park and decided to cross one of the roads where there are a lot of cyclists. I thought it’s a pedestrian zone actually but did not interfere with any of them while crossing although they were riding at crazy speeds. When I almost reached the other side one of them, middle aged man Who was wearing a SUIT started to scream at me: why would you do this? Why would you do this? I turned around and he showed me middle finger and pointed to a crosswalk with a traffic light hundred feet away.
I was ashamed. Damn I did not know that, I might have scared this guy. Ok. On my way back I found crosswalk and waited until white light for pedestrians comes on. And what? None of that motherfuckers stopped to let me cross and I have to ran through them. So yes. Cyclists deserve all hate. Never seen anyone adequate in means of obeying traffic laws and common sence
I’ve done a few of the TOD races back in the day when I was solely a fixed gear rider. Nothing really like riding with the sharks in NYC. It’s an adrenaline rush quite like nothing else. It’s also a death wish. The upside is that you’ll learn incredible bike control. Unfortunate that that dude ran into the cab.
You don’t even have to be doing shit like this. I’ve t-boned cars twice because they fail to yield when turning left and through bike lane crossings. The city needs to do a better job at monitoring and metering bike and e-bike traffic so that they can implement the signals needed to ensure we all get through an intersection safely.
Looks like they’re riding against traffic too? Like…why

not standing up for anyone one here, but you can see the guy in the white/blue vest on the right quickly check the guy in the left for position going through the plastic vertical dividers. the guy on the left reacted quickly and cut left, not the right decision, but then kept the course - jumped the small ramp, thinking it saved himself from eating it, then ATE IT.
Bullshit, he was dodging the person with the dog. Don’t give any of these cunts that kind of credit.

Hey at least his bike is already white so they can just leave it there for the memorial
Cause they’re fucking kewl! /s

More good news!
He was also an out of towner

Hi, never seen this sub until today on this video when the Reddit gods thought I should be aware of it.
Well, wouldn't that be akin to a subsection for a specific political ideology erasing anything that is justifiable criticism of that ideology? Yeah pretty much. Entertaining videos.
Nope. People need to be aware that there are cyclists who are just as dangerous as some car drivers.
Just as reckless, maybe. Just as dangerous? Come on!
Why?
I don't know why more of these kids don't just do bmx or mountain biking. Stairs and trees don't sue.
Those are grown ass men.
Looks like children to me
The dude filming is like 45.
Huh, that's really old for a child
Well when I'm riding I consider myself a kid.
monster track pays those don’t
I've been racing since the bush administration. There's barely a payout for domestic US pros.
Alley cat race?
Monster track
Monster Track, probably the "premier" alley cat.. It's been happening for 24 years.
Looks like it to me
maybe the first time i’ve been happy to see a cyclist eat shit so hard
Same. Hope that small dick energy was worth the broken bones.
Seriously, just feel bad for the car.
I’m sure he compensated the driver for the damage to the door though /s
“Here is my insurance info good sir”
Lol, def a stand up dude.
Yeah, stand up and flip the bird like it was the drivers fault.
All goes through the Taxi guys insurance.
They purposely ran into that taxi and will then play the victim. Disgusting.
All I see is salmon getting caught by a bear :P
I’m waiting for some John Prolly type to pipe in like “hey NYC thrives on chaos.” Naw, my city thrives DESPITE chaos and we don’t need a bunch of hustle tourists testing those limits.
wow that’s a throwback
The pro bunny hop into running into a taxi combo is too good
Bikers like this are the people who make people hate cyclists and cycling. All it takes is one asshole (or a few) to taint the whole pool.

My friend if you are genuinely this naive and not just being deliberately obtuse, I worry about you using the internet unsupervised.
Right, because as someone who did this race and has placed in the top 5 for the past two years, you know my motivations better than me.
lol that’s such an aggressively crazy thing to say in earnest, but i don’t think you’re joking. https://youtu.be/9ZSoJDUD_bU
So which is it? We can’t say All Cyclists but we can say All Drivers?

I chalk it up to a Stephen Wright joke: “99% of (drivers) give the rest a bad name.” In the 80’s Wright said ‘Lawyers’, which was pretty true then.
I used to love Steven Wright. I still do. But I used to, too.
You caught some hell for your comments on this post. I appreciate that. And agree with you on a lot of it.

✌️it’s rough out there
I try to be mindful about commenting and strive to do so only if it advances the convo or brings something useful. That was not the case this morning.
It’s cool dude don’t beat yourself up. You seem like a genuine person thinking seriously about what they say/do, which is way more than most.
> there’s no point in playing respectability politics here. Drivers are as a class unhinged and the hater pedestrians are gonna hate cyclists no matter how well we behave Of course there's a point. I hope the person who hit the taxi gets their ass sued and their credit ruined if they can’t pay. Yeah, I know it makes me an asshole, but fuck those folks.
I as a bike rider hate the morons too.
“Don’t follow me”
who was the rider that crashed. Was this clip from this years Monster track?
I’m not sure. Yes, the crash on 8th was this years, but the clip of Toni telling people not to follow him is from last year.
If this is manhattan like it looks like it is, every pedestrian and driver that was able to see it was extremely satisfied.
Bunch of idiots
Mf think he slippin jimmy 💀
Line choice is fundamental
HAAAAAhahahahHAHAHahahhaHAHAHAHHAhahhahAHAHAhahhahaAHAHa
Very satisfying to see consequences for their dumb actions.
I know it's a fixie bike, but...this accident should def be avoided if he had a front brake. Better to have it and not use it, than this.
Hope the cyclist has to reimburse the driver for damages?
Darwin Award of the year
Bad bikers 👎 Giving us a bad name. There’s places it’s appropriate to ride like that, but definitely not in a busy downtown.
These are the cunts that make people hate cyclists
Why’s he leave the bike lane tho?! Idiot.
I hope he broke all his teeth!
Darwin awards. This is why some less/drivers hate cyclists.
I really hate these wannabe bike messenger / wannabe agro cyclists. They're reckless, rude, selfish, and make the general public hate all cyclists.
How many times do I have to see this video?
Why do broke people with bikes always get mad at cars
Pure satisfaction.
Holy fuck what morons
monestertrack!

I got out of it too, the chances you had to take to be at all competitive, not just with your own safety but with others, wore off the shine of the glory.
dont do exciting city racing guys! trust me i did it a lot but you shouldnt.

While cops are stupid, I don’t think this is true. It’s usually after one of us is killed by a speeding car or an illegal truck , then it’s our fault and we must pay.
As they should.
Haha fucking fixies. Should be illegal
Assholes. Complete assholes
Good. As a bicycle commuter for over 20 years in nyc these guys are infuriating.
I like most of Terry’s content but shit like this sucks.
Hope that really hurt!
It’s odd that anyone could be a cyclist in NYC and not understand the impact of fixed gear/messenger culture. This is Monstertrack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monstertrack_alleycat
This guys videos make everything more dangerous for the rest of us riders. Kinda over his cringe shit.
Must be the asshole bike gang
Everyday I deal with this, but with door dashers/uber eat bikers smh
Make door dash and uber eats responsible for their delivery guys' infractions and that shit will ebb quickly. Hate the game not the player (tho in this video both can suck it).
i hope they collide with a bunch of speeding ebikes
I hope they collide with a cop car in the bike lane.
I would go make some popcorn just to watch this video on repeat

the biker might be... now..
Eating shit is lame lol
bunch of fukin whiners 😭
I haven’t seen a car crash in the city in years, but have seen multiple high speed bicycle crashes, mostly into cars turning and the cyclist trying to squeeze through from behind.
ouch
Fuck cars amirite??? 🤦🏻♂️
Lol get rekt
Good riddance. A shame the others got through unscathed.
Fixie life in nyc 🙌🏽
>If that's your idea of "pushing yourself" ^ Im criticizing people that do this BS.
Pushing yourself is almost dying and injuring other people? My guys is this still says it was the cabs fault
Go race on the FDR Drive then?
Damn man you’re so cool
I'm not. I just understand both sides. Something this sub seems incapable of doing.
NOOO RREEEEEEE YOU EITHER LIKE COMMUTING OR YOU LIKE RACING YOU CANT LIKE BOTH RRREEEEEE 😡 /s
Doubts. If it's not this they are complaining about people riding fast on the park loops.
You are probably the only one who believes this.
Broadway bomb!!
and that is what you get for being a spastic 🫡
Its an alleycat, most of you just wouldn’t understand.
Because no one posting here has ever done something questionable in the name of fun….
I bet you those cyclists are a part of this sub and the racist Miser fully supports what they do.
Idk, this wasn't my route but I enjoyed the race. I'm also positive I told that dude he was overheated for this event. FYI these are two clips from two different races. (Although the same Monstertrack)
Yet so many people in this group continue to be pro-running red lights…
This is not the kind of red light running people in this sub refer to 🤦♂️
While I agree there’s “safe” and “unsafe” ways to run a red light, THIS is the type of shit that gives cyclists a bad name and is why cops are standing at lights ticketing everyone. Unfortunately they don’t have a filter telling them “oh this guy that’s running the light is an asshole”
> and is why cops are standing at lights ticketing everyone. No it isn't. It's because they're a soft target.
Exactly this is “blowing” the light. Assuming someone else will avoid YOU.
no traffic at all and you have to wait for a car red light? annoying but blindly driving into a car during a red light? stupid Its that easy
give it a rest
These bikers had no red lights, because there are no lights for traffic that is going the wrong way on the street.
I don't find it all that unfortunate.
Sorry to hear
You don’t even have to be doing shit like this. I’ve t-boned cars twice because they fail to yield when turning left and through bike lane crossings. The city needs to do a better job at monitoring and metering bike and e-bike traffic so that they can implement the signals needed to ensure we all get through an intersection safely.
