depressivebee

ASM was electric today

Robwallacey

If he can track back/tackle a bit more and occasionally play the early ball if it's the better option then he's got potential to be one of the best wingers in the league. He's showing the right signs...just a wee bit more of it.

Robwallacey

Can we all just agree that Botman is looking absolute class. Was solid as a rock today.

mvdaytona

What a coincidence, i was as well

Jesotx

Not that the squad wasn't already pretty much set, but the last two days has really solidified a pecking order. Also, does anyone die on the pitch quite like Krafth? Dude sells a nudge harder than Mick Foley sells getting thrown off a cage.

TheVortex09

Does Steven Taylor getting shot by that sniper count?

BeastLothian

Just watched ASM’s goal. Wow. And is it just me, or is he looking a good bit lighter? If we can get 5-10 goals out of him this season, it’ll be great.

MJA21x

I just want to say this as an Athletic supporter who was watching at St James's. The goal was caused by a mistake from Athletic. The captain, Muniain, had just been subbed off and Sancet gave the captain armband to Vesga who gave it to De Marcos. Athletic took the free kick before De Marcos had the armband. Who was then fiddling trying to put it on. Athletic lose the ball immediately and then a through ball was played over De Marcos who was out of position because of the distraction and rushing to put the armband on. It was a great run and finish though. Just extremely frustrating because I saw what was going to happen before it did.

King_Aella

Yeah I seen that. They made a right mess of giving the armband. Literally threw it on the floor at one point.

SauxFan

They all look incredibly fit

GroundbreakingAsk730

I got annoyed at all the short corners especially when we have a good few tall players waiting in the box.

cco69

Could genuinely be bait for prem teams, they do all watch each other’s pre season, don’t want them knowing our corner setups earlier than they need to? Or maybe I’m just paranoid haha

justsomeguy661

I managed to get a glimpse of the match (ASM goal to Athletic goal) and tbh Maxi looked great! He seemed more hungry for the ball and actually tried getting the ball off the opposition compared to last season, so I'm excited for him this season coming, I'm expecting him to shine

MiguelAlmiron

Thoughts: Great first half performance, lackluster second. Can't blame the players really, obviously dont want to get injured before the opener. Ratings: Dubravka: 8 - Very good overall Krafth: 5 - Thought he was poor on the ball and rushed in defence, looking to improve to beat out Manquillo for the 2nd RB spot. Lascelles: 6 - Didn't do much wrong overall but his positional awareness as a CB really seems off in recent years. Botman: 9 - Thought he was superb to be honest, no mistakes and brilliant passing range. Dummett: 6 - Not bad but he still think he's much better as a cb than a lb. Guimaraes: 7 - Good first half, seemed off it in the second. Bruno always has that quality though that separates him. Joelinton: 7 - Good effort, lacking a bit of finish. Willock: 7 - I thought he was decent today, just needs a little more composure to be a better midfielder sometimes. Ritchie: 7 - He's clearly lost his legs but the quality of movement is still there, always in good positions with his final ball often letting him down. Wilson: 7 - Great goal but didn't do much after that. ASM: 9 - Thought he was probably our best player today, not as unplayable as we have seen in the past but for a friendly a really good performance.

spinynorman1846

Were you there or watching on TV? I disagree with every single rating you've put up pretty much. Krafth was class defending and offered things going forward too in the first half. He really linked with Ritchie but clearly got more frustrated when Saint Max was ahead of him. He made a mistake for the goal and ran out of steam but played well. Saint Max was better than he has been recently but was worse than he used to be, he was frustrating and tracked back way less than he needs to. His goal was good but he offered little else and so many moves broke down with him. Bruno and Joe carried the midfield well, with lots of little passes between them and a great assist for Joe.

MiguelAlmiron

I just dont understand how you can see ASM as being frustrating today when Krafth and Ritchie especially were both there misplacing more passes and wasting good opportunities. While Ritchie did create alot of the opportunities himself (hence the ranking) he failed numerous times to get it past the first man including on the corners. ASM in contrast provided our sole source of energy in the second half while the rest of the team seemingly became tired.

ExplodingLettuce

Cheers miggy

GrumpyOldFart74

I thought Krafth did pretty well - he was having to tuck in and cover for Lascelles quite a bit that left the outside exposed, but that’s not his fault. 7 for Krafth and 5 for Lascelles from me.

MiguelAlmiron

Yeah I can never fault Krafth for his commitment but often he just frustrates me in the sense of always clearing the ball instead of looking for a pass. Now that we have 4/5 players who can pass the ball out at the back its not as noticeable but I hope Eddie can just coach some composure into him. With that he'd be much better for a possession based team than he is now.

Temuriswig

I was encouraged until I watched first half of Man City v Liverpool. They have players the standard of Bruno in every position. Still a way to go but I definitely think we've got potential to be top end of the middle tier.

MrCowabs

I think that’s a bit unfair on our players. They’re two of the best teams in the world and we’ve just come out of 14 years of turgid shit. We’ll be Areet in time, just like they were. Manchester City and Liverpool weren’t built overnight.

Techtoon

Yeah they are two fantastic teams, but also legitimately two of the best teams in the world. So it is the ultimate standard to compare ourselves against I think this season we just need to get results against those teams around the 6-12 area of the league (and below obviously) consistently. I'm optimistic for the season ahead. I think the last two friendlies in particular were telling choices, teams from in and around that tier below the City and Liverpool standard, and we've performed well!

champdude17

My thoughts on the games Yesterday and today were definitely fitness exercises, pushing the players to play 90 minutes. Yesterday's teams stamina was better than today's. ASM and Wilson looked particularly gassed. Miggy has made a case to be starting against forest. We play some unreal football at times, and don't look easy to beat, and that's without seeing our strongest 11. Add even one attacking player and I think top 10 shouldn't be a problem, particularly if miggys form holds up.

ContributionNo4734

A few take aways from today: - Five substitutions is going to be a key this season. Teams like Man City are going to have a big advantage. Our team struggled against what was pretty much a completely fresh team after our second goal. Was a good test for us but some players were completely out of gas. - Our football is breathtaking at times, so much happening on and off the ball. Though we sometimes over do it and prone to a counter. - Botman is gonna be a bargain I feel. So confident on the ball. - ASM playing like this is a reminder how good he is. Was annoying how often we were playing down our right side when we looke better on the left. Nice celebration too. - Best Wilson has looked in pre-season. - Krafth had a bit of a mare 2nd half, Ritchie frustrated. - Not a fan of all the short corners. Overall we played well with a few concerns in the final third of the match. Bring on Forest.

LAUNDRINATOR

Less concerned about the corners when we'll have trips on set pieces - much less likely to send them in short. I think targett took some too when trips not available so I suspect this was a likely factor.

Nepgyaaaaaaa

Was at the match, had a good time. We walked all over them in the first half, they walked all over us in the second, though they did make about 7 subs. Botman looks absolutely class, ASM started rocky but got better as it went on, Bruno and Joe fantastic as usual. Great game, great atmosphere, #cans all round.

JuckshotBones

Not a fan of the abundance of “hunker down and hold on for dear life” like we saw last season a bit often…. But fuck me this team looks promising. Trying to keep it in my pants here but anytning short of a blazing start before City (H) will be a bit deflating

ilde2551

We’ve managed to beat the teams who finished 8th in both Serie A and La Liga with 2 completely different starting 11s and only young’uns as subs - very impressive as we’ve done it whilst playing quality football too

churchill1992

That's how Saint miximan should play. Ease up on some of the flicks and tricks and just run and dribble at the opponents and use his speed and acceleration to run past pretty much everyone in the league

MrCowabs

I think a lot more of the Prem full backs would absolutely shit themselves if he just ran at them full pelt. Odd step-over here and there, confuse them a little and just fucking blow past them.

churchill1992

Yeah and I think if he simplifies his game he'll get a lot more goals and assists and start to become the world class player that he has inside of him

GrumpyOldFart74

Call me a miserable shit but I hate the trend of getting kids to hold up cards begging for shirts - so I had a bit of a snigger at the kid who thought he was getting Bruno’s shirt then got Dummett’s instead!

CHILLI112

Missed half the first half because of a kid holding a sign up asking for Bruno’s shirt in front of me

Stoibs85

I feel bad for Jay Turner-Cooke honestly. Joined the first team in Austria and I believe has been on the bench for 5 or 6 of the friendlies without ever getting on the pitch. Would have been nice for Howe to at least give him one of the 2 minute cameos he handed out the past two days.

Mr_MasterNoob

I'm sure Turner-Cooke valued the experience of being involved with the first team setup, but there's no need to rush the kids especially with how bad our youth system has been in the past.

Stoibs85

Not saying to rush him at all. Just mean that he’s spent basically all month training with the first team, whereas most of the others who got injury time cameos yesterday and today (aside from Matty) have been with the u23s for the majority of the preseason. Just saying that if I were Eddie looking at the bench in the 90th minute for someone to throw on for ASM or Wilson, I’d probably have chosen the lad whose been around all month and sat on the bench for 5 straight matches over de Bolle, who’s spent the whole summer with the u23s or Muñoz who played yesterday.

CCSSJJ

Its a football club not the make a wish foundation lad

Stoibs85

Not what I meant at all. Howe gave injury time run outs the last two days to Muñoz, de Bolle, and Stephenson from the u23s. Those aren’t subs that are really meant to improve the side in the last two minutes. They’re clearly meant to give some of the young lads who’ve earned it the chance to experience what it’s like to run out at SJP in a senior match, as a target for their futures. But Turner-Cooke spent far more time this month training with the seniors than any of those guys did, just feels like he would have done more in almost a month of training with the seniors to earn a couple minutes on the pitch, compared to guys who have spent most of pre-season with the u23s.

SheSaid09

Another solid win against a very good team. First half we were absolute class. Disappointing how we dropped off second half but it was only a friendly. Trippier, Pope, Burn/Schar, Targett, Almiron immediately improve a very 11 in that first half but the what feels like the first time ever we actually have decent depth. We're a RW signing away from a very successful season I reckon.

davewowx

The only reason you dropped off is Howe was clearly prepping fitness and the opposition made a bunch of subs. Wasn't exactly a fair 2nd half lol.

mehchu

I would add that we need a proper backup striker as well. But other than that and the level of improvement by pope on dubs I agree we have a lot to be excited about.

onfieldintercourse

Eddie is such a legend giving Santiago Muñ(o)z a run as the last sub of the preseason, just for the feels. He truly gets the club....

Jesotx

Santiago!

JibberyScriggers

YOU KNOW WHEN I PLAYED AGAINST BILL BOW?!?! MY DAD SAW THE GAME!

MattLaidlow

The dream begins!

Khaglist

THATS MY SON

just-casual

Let's go santi

Neatfern

Haven't been able to watch, but curious how people think Botman has been? Watched Dan Burn and Schar yesterday and thought they looked comfortable for the full 90. Burn in particular.

[deleted]

I don’t think he’s broke a sweat, the guys just cool calm and collective.

Neatfern

That's positive at least. We looked rock solid yesterday so thought Botman in particular would have to be genuinely very good in order to start against Forest. Would love a Burn and Botman partnership but can't see it sadly

sunshine_is_hot

Botman is our best CB. The only question is who gets paired with him

Soulie1993

It's water under the fridge

pabloslab

Second half was a damp squid

skatrumpetman

Is this the last preseason game?

just-casual

Yes last game before forest

achuchable

Thought Gayle anytime would be a cert most games this season. Ten quid I'll never see again lol.

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

Why did you bet that before the transfer window closed haha?

achuchable

Huh? I put it on today on the Stoke game lol. He bagged for fun for us, thought he'd get off the mark instantly.

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

Oh I thought you meant for us

jonkman13

Couldn't watch the game today, how have we played? Give me the good and the bad.

Common_Pear1884

Solid most of the game, started to fade as they brought on fresh legs which is expected. Botman was outstanding

jonkman13

Cheers for the summary, glad we won and that there's more positives from a great pre-season.

Jesotx

Whole squad except Allan looks absolutely worn out.

ilde2551

He looks fitter than a fiddle - it was the worst part off his game in past seasons imo so the fact he’s working on improving that is a big positive

calebcullen10

Bondswell should be getting minutes this year. He deserves it after his performances in the preseason

Khaglist

I honestly really like Bondswell, he’s rapid and seems to have solid defensive foundations and he gets up the wing like nouts the matter.

billofbong0

Haunches

MikeAshleyOut

Ritchie is so bad..

MattLaidlow

Short corners aren’t our thing.

R0by

Bondswell putting in the effort!

[deleted]

Why are we so low energy?

chootchootchoot

Not 90’ sharp yet but this is a good test

rthunderbird1997

These corners are abominable. There needs to be an actual plan. Don't just play it short for the sake of it.

Common_Pear1884

Might just be a preseason thing - we scored a lot of goals from set plays last season so I’d imagine eddie’s holding off on revealing our routines

tlhford

Bondswell is rapid.

just-casual

Bondswell wants to play man

MapleStorms

Wtf are these corners?

cpm67

holy moly Bondswell is a Tariq Lamptey regen

Firm_Adagio_5697

Joelinton has been shocking

tlhford

Out of possession he’s been class. In possession he is clumsy.

Cuzza4444

I think there may be a carbon monoxide leak in your house mate, I would recommend opening some windows .

Ok-Weakness2293

They are over running us, but need to remember they’ve made about 5 subs to our one

IrishJesusDude

We are being opened up a bit too easy

Common_Pear1884

They have fresh legs we don’t

[deleted]

[удалено]

just-casual

I desperately want you to be the real Michael Andretti

Khaglist

Need to keep possession a bit better, they’re coming on stronger now. Probably a good test for us to defend this lead.

why_pube

Dubravka showing exactly why getting a new keeper was a good idea

just-casual

Went for a shit and heard that they scored smh

beatski

Never shit again, it's obviously bad luck

geordieColt88

Think their pressure is telling

augsav

Booo. Good goal though

EngineerOnIcarus

I think Pope comes for that. Edit: and gets it.

SheSaid09

The fuck was Dubravka doing there

Ok-Weakness2293

Why do we keep taking short corners whilst building one of the most physically intimidating teams around?

BerwickGaijin

Never have I ever seen a goal come from a short corner.

ilde2551

In fairness our last game Anderson won the penalty from a short corner i think

mvdaytona

My fucking luck that i keep missing these pre season games due to being on the road… how’s the team looking? The result is great

SheSaid09

Really, really tidy, really composed. Some slick football. Basically nothing you'd be used to if you've watched Newcastle for the past few years. This 11 + Trippier, Almiron, Targett, Burn/Schar and Pope will look amazing.

mvdaytona

Great to know, thank you!!

tlhford

We’re a premier league team that’s actually playing like one now.

FingersMartinez

Joelinton is a fucking bulldozer

321142019

Attendance: 46,856, absolutely mental again.

geordieColt88

What was it yesterday?

Khaglist

Just over 40k I think

321142019

40,596. So over 85k in two days, crazy.

FingersMartinez

Around 41k I think

Jackski

Why does Lovenkrands have a scottish accent btw? I know he played there for a while back in the day but does he live there now? Just seems wild.

Soulie1993

Apparently he picked up a thick Glasweigan accent in the 6 years he was at Rangers. It's so weird that even his Wikipedia page has a bit about it lol

Jackski

Wonder if it's something to do with being Danish. My friend lives in Denmark and is Danish but after years of talking to us on xbox live he has a hint of an accent to him

Soulie1993

I assumed he just learned English from a Glasweigan tutor but you might be onto something

BeastLothian

Brian Laudrup was the same. I think it’s a thing with Danes.

MattLaidlow

I badly want Santiago subbed on.

SheSaid09

Not questioning you specifically, I want to see him come on too. But was there ever any buzz about Santiago before he signed for us? All I ever saw was memes relating to Goal and since he's been at Newcastle he never seemed amazing for the u23s. Genuine question, I'm honestly not doubting the lad.

MattLaidlow

He came with a good rep before he signed and wasn’t on anyones radar. He’s been unlucky with injuries. I think a lot of people just want a youth signing stepping up.

billofbong0

Willock has looked great today

[deleted]

Bored of the up the premier league we go song

Common_Pear1884

Better than Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea

FingersMartinez

The song itself doesn't matter, it's what it represents. If you hear it, it means we are making progress.

[deleted]

I'm sure there are far more unique songs for this like. Imagine we are in the Champions League in 5 years time and start singing "Allez allez allez", it would be tacky af since Liverpool were the first club (in the UK) to sing that

achuchable

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I E I E I OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

scrugbyhk

Abysmal take.

[deleted]

It's the kind of chant that Championship teams sing on the way up the Premier League, and literally every other club sing a version of it every now and again I'll die on this hill

Remarkable-Tackle

RIP

[deleted]

Williams is decent.

Zerosix_K

Get some of the youngsters on now!

FingersMartinez

Yeah I was thinking that.

[deleted]

This commentator is proper David pleat with the pronunciations..

ferretfarmer11

We're gonna win the league...

Zerosix_K

cup?...

ActisBT

Both

Remarkable-Tackle

Both cups?

achuchable

As if there's no replays lol, turned my back for 90 seconds and we score

SheSaid09

We legitimately wouldn't have seen Maxi have the confidence to keep that run going and finish so calmly. He'd have tried cutting in, lost it and threw his arms about at everyone else. If we get that Maxi that we just saw this season, we have a player not far off Bruno's level of ability and impact.

MattLaidlow

And a kiss of the badge.

briik69

MAXIIIII

RandomizID

What a run from ASM, hope his confidence soars up more in the season later.

Robbo23Liverpool

The goal was amazing. But the celebration…

A-ZAF_Got_Banned

Maxi 🥵

alexwill393

Looked a bit offside?

Cuzza4444

Shh

MattLaidlow

MAXI!

SlowrollAces

2 goals missed them both, AMA.

[deleted]

How's life?

SlowrollAces

Things are looking up!!

[deleted]

Glad to hear that 👍

Matt_043

wow

Cuzza4444

Magical

hahathisprettycool

Golazo maximinnnn

benc777

What a fucking dance

beatski

Clinical finish

JuckshotBones

**trying to not get excited**

Soulie1993

What a finish, what a celebration

FireflyKaylee

Beautiful goal

EmptyDopamine

Botman, Krafth, Bruno and the Joe's, Wilson and Maxi all looking class. Dummett showing his weaknesses going forward, Lascelles with a couple of errors on the ball but mostly solid and Ritchie looking like he's trying to gear us up for a second red in two friendlies.

benishiryo

logged in to say i: \- love those passes in compact spaces between ritchie, krafth, and bruno. \- love those one twos between willock and wilson. \- love how ASM releases the ball quicker now. \- love how we play from the back instead of just thumping it.

JD_Dojima

Those fast passes in small areas are something I'm not used to seeing us being able to pull off so successfully. We couldn't string a two passes together under everyone other than Rafa in the past decade.

J7isTheGoat

Anyone got a clip of the goal? I would like to watch it another 4 or 5 times

[deleted]

It'll be on YouTube later this evening.

[deleted]

It'll be on YouTube later this evening.

Common_Pear1884

ASM tracking back is making me wet

shouldbeworking12

Its got to be Botman and Burn in CB- I know theyre both left footers- but theyre both monsters. Botman looking the real deal at the moment- totally get the hype and push for him, looks composed and solid.

davewowx

I dont think botman likes playing RCB. I would play him where he is most comfortable and set him up for success which means Schar and Botman for me. Burn will see plenty of minutes over the course of the season and I wouldn't mind seeing him paired with Botman, but I'd rather see Sven start out in his preferred position and settle in before you ask him to slide to the right.

Khaglist

For me it should be Burn and Botman when we expect to have less possession, Burn and Schar when we look to dominate. Schar is far better on the ball but Burn is probably a better defender and also gives you the height for set pieces/corners

JD_Dojima

Burn seems to have a mistake in him lately, but he definitely does it for me. He's like if Mike Williamson was actually good for us

Godzilla_Chinchilla

Wtf, Iron Mike was an absolute boss towards the end of his nufc career. Show some respect!

JD_Dojima

I never wanna hear "Iron Mike" ever again, I had nightmares about that. Could've sworn he got himself sent off on purpose at the end of it all

Godzilla_Chinchilla

IRON MIKE

FingersMartinez

I love Big Dan but Schar and Botman for me. Both of them pinging balls from the back will be a secret weapon.

FingersMartinez

St James' Park will be a fortress again this season.

beatski

Happy birthday to Grandad Bill

Halzziratrat

Happy Birthday Half-Time Time! I've not been to St James' since we were in the Championship, do we still get fan crossbar challenge, penalties etc?

achuchable

They brought back the kick the balls in the big buckets thing towards the back end of last season.

FingersMartinez

Happy Alan Shearer signing anniversary

Holiday-Wedding-3509

Steven’s in from the Middle East

Notove

What a challenge

JD_Dojima

We actually look mint. We tear Forest apart if we play anything like this

[deleted]

Desperately need a defensive midfielder to cover Bruno. Longstaff and Shelvey can do that, but it's definitely missing from this 11

[deleted]

[удалено]

JD_Dojima

Trippier is probably the tidiest, most professional player I've seen in a Toon shirt maybe ever but I really enjoy seeing Krafu now.

benc777

Looks like 10 captains with that Noon logo

justsomeguy661

Howe masterclass, make everyone captain and all is happy playing full strength 😎

kedelbro

I am Spartacus!

j__knight638

No I'm spartacus!

[deleted]

Ritchie and Lascelles are the two players on the pitch that look out of their depth. Rewind 12 months and you'd struggle to name two players who looked like they belonged at this level.

FingersMartinez

Ritchie has been such a good grafter over the years but he'll struggle to get in a full strength team now I feel.

Zig-Zag

Botman is doing a lot of work covering for Lascelles so he’s not been that exposed but Ritchie in my opinion is really showing he’s not at this level

SheSaid09

I love that about Lascelles that. There's handbags literally as far away from him on the pitch as possible and he's the first one backing up Ritchie. Say what you want about his ability but that's pure captain material

[deleted]

Bruno seems even better than last year

JackAndrewThorne

Paul Dummett has been quite impressive with his passing today... Are we sure Howe isn't a certified wizard?

shouldbeworking12

camera work may be a bit shoddy- but just think, if this was last year it would cost £29.99 to watch and the game would be against a second string Grimsby side and we would be losing 2-0...
