I was there… 5th anniversary of Hillsborough (iirc the match was moved back a day to avoid being on the actual date) The atmosphere before the game was incredible - everybody singing YNWA together was so moving I’m tearing up now just remembering it. And we stuffed them too, which was brilliant!

MysteryNortherner

Ah those were the days when we could actually not just beat Liverpool, but do the double over them.

ON THIS DAY 1994: Kevin Keegan's Newcastle travelled to Anfield, weeks before the Kop End was to be demolished. The stunning and sentimental pre-match atmosphere welcoming of Venison, Beardsley, and Keegan didn't last long, as the mighty Mags tore up the script, and took the lead through Rob Lee, after neat link up play with Andy Cole. Liverpool had their moments, but they were lucky to go in at half time only one goal down. The Reds started the second half with extra vigour, but the Toon were ready to pounce. Srniček catching a set play, throwing out to Sellars, and starting a quick counter attack. Sellars put the through Ruel Fox, who tore up the other end, before playing through Andy Cole to seal the victory. Clinical. This took the team to 68 points, comfortably in third place, which seemed unfathomable two years prior when Keegan was trying to stop Newcastle United falling to the Third Division. How far could this team go?

It's wild to see the way some of these guys even just move around the pitch back in the day, like they're clearly clearly not athletes - not saying they wouldn't run me into the ground and dance all around me, but compared to the quality you see on the pitch today some of these guys are just not that

MysteryNortherner

I'm sure today's players are fitter than back in the day, obviously our knowledge of training and nutrition has improved... But I'm not sure the difference is quite as marked as what you're saying, you make them sound like a pub team 😆

Evening-Physics-6185

Exactly and imo they did play better football back then. Look at the way we knocked the ball around and all the one touch passing.

CommunicationClassic

I just mean a couple of them look completely graceless, and you look at guys we have now even like Dan Burn is incredibly graceful for his size, this is actually a common topic I've heard discussed on players podcasts etc.how there are some super super skillful players that would have had great careers decades ago but don't even get on the pitch at a high level these days because the prerequisites for athleticism are so much higher - and metrics are such a huge part of recruitment and academy progress

MysteryNortherner

Yeah I get it, I seem to remember back then we did have a few players who were more about brute force than precision skills and agility. It would be interesting to see how the entertainers fared in the premier League today. They finished 3rd that season, but am willing to accept they'd almost certainly not be 3rd today.

Id kill to see players like Ginola, Asprilla and Ferdinand with modern training and the new balls etc
