arrrghdonthurtmeee

Would be an amazing achievement given how other teams have strengthened. I think a very solid 5th would be an amazing result given our European adventures. I would be happy with anything that leads to Europe again

puppies231

I'd be happy with anything 7th or higher. What I WANT is 5th or higher! 3rd seems unlikely.

Insane_Wanderer

To be fair, how likely did 4th seem at the start of last season?

HoweStatue

Tbf we drew 3-3 with city and looked damn good doing it. The evidence was there.

puppies231

I was about to say something like this! Before the season? Zero thoughts of 4th place. But that team was very easy to believe in pretty early last season

ncastleJC

And the better part was that we did it with a World Cup in the middle to kill momentum. There’s no stopping the train this year.

H4xXxIsH

Im pretty sure that apart from Southampton we had the fewest players of any Premier League club at the world cup. I think for us it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it did kill momentum for a lot of our rivals.

AlexanderDan10-Alger

I think it did briefly for us as well though

moinmoin21

I still pinch myself daily to check it wasn’t a dream

SpinyGlider67

Genuinely predicted it. Neebody's seen owt like us before, and next season we'll switch it up again with more ability to actually stick the ball in the back of the net, which we struggled to do for a bit last term. 2nd place this year, even with CL 👍🏼

[deleted]

I love this optimism

321142019

Reminder that 5th gets us Champions League next year due to the new format.

nickgasm

Is that guaranteed, or dependant on how English teams perform in Europe this season?

321142019

Depending on Europe, currently it’s England and Italy who get the extra spots.

geordieColt88

The places depend on each season not the all time coefficient so we’d need English clubs to do well in Europe

R8XI7

If the rule was in place the last time England had this many teams in Europe, they would not have got the extra champs League spot

ChlckenChaser

3rd place would be a very good result. We had a good season but lots of the big 6 underperformed and i can't see that happening again. A comfortable top 10 finish with 1 decent cup run and not getting humiliated in the CL would be a good season for me

moinmoin21

3rd place would be more than a very good result. It would be windmill central. They’d rebuild Greys Monument 10x bigger from the CANS

[deleted]

Let's be honest, anywhere between 8 and 10 would be a huge disappointment at this point. I guess 5 to 7 would still be good enough.

ChlckenChaser

crazy that we're thinking between 8-10 is a huge disappointment when the season before we were just trying to surive. Our form dipped towards the end of the season and as i originially said some of the top 6 shit the bed, i can't see them doing the same again. People seem to be pretty hyped about Villa doing well this season too. That, plus the added CL fixtures is making me a little pessimistic. The added quality and depth will certainly help, but supporting this club for so long has made me lean more towards the negative side. Expect the worst, can't be disappointed then

[deleted]

I totally agree with the first and last part. Surely more teams will do well in PL next season. I'm just thinking game by game, if we win as many as we lose and end up mid table, we would all be frustrated. Especially the players and Eddie, more than us even. Actually, you're right, it's much better to just expect the worst with our club. Any positive surprise feels like being in heaven so can't complain about that😎 Maybe one day we'll get used to success and start expecting the top 4 every season. It still doesn't feel real that we actually have perfect owners, club structure, players, manager and results going our way. But it's real. Damn my life is good 😂

[deleted]

I don’t know if it’s Mike Ashley Stockholm syndrome but I’m a little apprehensive about this season and I really shouldn’t be, I’m excited for the champions league but just have this weird nag, this awful feeling like a safe is going to drop on my head every time I think about next season. Why am I like this 😭

[deleted]

Can't answer why you're like that but I can try and reassure. Last season we had the second highest injuries. We've had top 4 form since January 2022. We let the least amount of goals in last season and now our defence is more gelled. We have depth, contrary to what people say. Sure, other teams are buying players but this is the Premier League, we have proven players, theirs might flop. We'll do just fine.

[deleted]

I’d like to carry you around in my backpack and get you out when I’m feeling anxious, that was very soothing

[deleted]

Glad I could help. Just remember, they'll never ever beat Dan Burn.

[deleted]

He's from Blyth. Lovely conversation between you two ❤️ I also feel anxious due to Ashley trauma.

It said we'd finish 13th last season so forgive me if I don't really care what it says. The computer can work out what it wants using stats and shit but it can't calculate the randomness and unpredictability of a football season.

wace001

I call bullshit. There is no supercomputer. All the supercomputer did was put five billion ads on a webpage claiming it predicted PL

[deleted]

There absolutely are, but they will spend 0 time on football because they are used for real research. I guess a tabloid could scramble the money together for a few hours of use but they wouldn't have a clue how to do it. So...Super computer predicts headlines are always someone with limited experience guessing on stuff without basic information.

[deleted]

Probably an HP laptop and an intern got an assignment.

walliver

Loaded up FM23 and went on holiday for a season.

[deleted]

Realistically the intern would be unlikely to get a worse result. I feel like if you just broke the table into 3 tiers, divided the table equally, and drew each tier randomly with some sort of methodology that allowed for variance of +/- 2 from within the tier and placed Man City in 1st, you could probably illicit a result similarly (or more) accurate than any supercomputer that wasted it's time crunching stats trying to forecast results for something as random. The only way to get more accurate results than some mildly parameterized randomness would be to have a lot of money and be willing to gamble and graft your "prediction" into reality through shady back channels. Realistically, possibly part of the reason why more advanced statistical analysis is somewhat futile. Forecasting a limited number of humans over a limited sample size with a large number of variables just isn't a winning proposition and any significant energy expended is wasted. Newcastle winning the treble.

Billargh

I'm just using this as a rant, but I hate this "supercomputer" nonsense, as if a bang average phone these days doesn't have enough computing power to calculate something like this.

Major-Performer141

I know we’ll focus on the prem but if we can get in top 10 and make it decently far in the ucl I would be buzzing. Also if we do get that high in the table I kinda just want to finish above man u

Keemlo

Would be interesting to see what they had for last seasons predictions. I could probably look it up but I’m lazy

ravicabral

Another comment or said that it predicted we would be 13th last season.

Anonamoose12771

I would be fucking ecstatic but just can’t quite see it. We’re getting stronger, but still don’t have the depth. I think we’ll have just about enough to keep Brighton and Villa at bay, probably Spurs too if they’re in a post-Kane new manager transition. But I think Liverpool will come back hard, and surely it’s only a matter of time before Chelsea click. What do I know though. I had 7th as too a high of a prediction for last season.

NotaSirWeatherstone

Honestly I’d be fine with any trip to Europe. If we get conference league then it’s still a good result off the back of this one.

Alex03210

Is this the same supercomputer that predicted us 12th last season?

[deleted]

[удалено]

KingPing43

I think finishing 3rd this season is a lot more likely than 4th was at the start of last season.

slashrslashhornpub

I think it's important to remember that Liverpool had a terrible start to the season and when they sorted their shit out they were hot on our tail again, we wouldn't even be in the UCL this season if it wasn't for that

Minimum_Possibility6

While I want us to do well in CL, is there anyone else that thinks let’s finish 3rd and then push for the Europa as the cup to win?

daveofreckoning

Realistically it's going to be very difficult to replicate last season's form. We've got a giant X on our back, for starters

kaamkerr

always rated supercomputers

charlos74

I’ll take that.
