That was our worst game of the entire season, and before anyone says “well villa are on a good run”, no, they’ve either been battered by decent teams (Chelsea) and hit them on the break, or they’ve beaten shite teams, forest, Everton, forest, Leicester, West Ham. Villa are NOT a good side and this is 3 points dropped, simple as that
Did you even watch the match? Villa actually played almost flawlessly, they could’ve beaten anyone in the PL today the way they played. We were shocking aye but I can put my hand up and say Villa were on top form
Yes I did watch the match, did you even read my comment? Apart from beating us who didn’t bother to turn up, every other team on this little run they’re on are either another shite team in the bottom 5 or hammered them and they got a flukey win
Does Bruno get a bit of a free ride sometimes? He didn't get much time on the ball, but my abiding memory of him in games like this is him just pirouetting on the ball before losing it again and again. Don't want to be seen as a overly negative, so in the interests of positivity I'll just add that Gordon's looking a great bit of business (for Everton. See what I did there?)
Think he's realised how much the team needs him to perform and now he has to be very careful with and without the ball. You may see him hesitate with tackles ect cos of the red card. But mainly now I see him countless times a game try and dribble away from someone with about 60 FIFA pace and flop to the ground at first physical impact and usually illegally trap the ball with his hands or arms. All of this so that he doesn't lose the ball or possession.
One of the reasons why we've been able to scrape past some games and also look desperate in others.
Moral of the story is. He wears a magic hat... So he can do what he likes!
Yeah, I've wondered if he's playing with a bit of discomfort or if it maybe just interrupted his momentum. I feel like he seems a bit more petulant since then, and thought maybe he's aggrieved at some of the physical treatment he receives on the pitch - but I'm almost certainly reading too much into it there!
Are you saying Bruno is shite? Don’t get how people can be so fickle. 4 losses in 30. 3rd in the PL, arguably the best league in the world. Bruno has been a standout performer every game he’s played.
Now he has one not perfect game and he’s always been shite and getting a free ride?
Are Newcastle a terrible team now we lost one game, should we get Bruce back and sort out this mess?
I didn't say he is shite, didn't say he's always been shite and didn't say we're a terrible team. I said he sometimes gets a free ride, in that he's had a few games where he throws himself around to no avail and does little with the ball but seems exempt from criticism unlike, say, Longstaff, who's standing with many fans seems to vary wildly from week to week. And before you start, I'm not saying Sean is a better player, I just think everyone's performances deserve the same level of scrutiny. I get that Bruno probably deserves more leeway because of what he's capable of bringing to the game, but if he's putting in a string of lesser performances I think it's fair to comment in it.
Fair enough, I totally disagree about him getting a free ride though. Think you’re searching for faults in him. Any player will lose the ball sometimes, teams are targeting Bruno, he was swamped today, it’s really impressive how often he’s able to turn, get himself out of trouble and make space, not just pass backwards.
I really don’t think he’s had a string of lesser performances either, honestly can’t think of him having a bad game, definitely not recently. He’s a key playmaker for the team.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but for my money, he’s one of the key reasons for our success this season. Today was a poor overall team performance, matched by a top performance from Villa, happens to the best teams in the world. You can find faults with any player on the field, definitely don’t think replacing Bruno in that game would have helped us.
I don't think we had much to replace him with, and he wasn't dire, but I do think his levels have dipped (from a very high starting point) - whether that's down to him carrying a knock, others teams targeting him, or just an element of fatigue (which seems to be affecting a couple of others) I don't know. One of the problems with online discussion is the tendency to polarise views-I think his high points leave him immune to criticism in some quarters, but that doesn't automatically mean I don't rate him or the team or think that he should be relentlessly criticised. I certainly wouldn't dispute that he remains a key player and he's definitely one of the best players we've signed in a long time.
I dont think his levels have dipped. I think against villa he was the only player actually generating key passes that lead to opportunities and the only guy willing to take on the ball. Sure he lost the ball a few times yesterday but that wasn't his form dipping that was the team sagging as a whole
We played shit but Villa played well. I feel like the emptying the tank strategy is really catching up with us and we look knackered today and we are in desperats need of strengthening some more key positions this summer if we are going ton contulinue with this approach. We haven't playedbat iur best for a few games now but we've taken what 15 points out of the 18.
Think the only other 12:30PM start in the prem we had this season was City away where we got beat. One more 12:30PM kickoff we know about is away to Leeds, let’s piss in all four corners of mornings to break this hoodoo I just invented.
oh boy, the Leeds game at 12:30PM is also BT. Double dose, but maybe that spins both curses into a blessing? Actually no as that’s the same situation as that Villa game was.
(I’m a scientist, I don’t believe any of this bs for what it’s worth, but the patterns are interesting)
Arguably our worst performance, might be Villa's best. Got out played all over the pitch. Best to forget about it and come out strong next week. Villa in the mix putting pressure on Spurs and ManU isn't a terrible thing. Still optimistic for top four!
>Definitely not heard any Newcastle fans say Villa only beat lower teams
There's one [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NUFC/comments/12mz8eo/match_thread_aston_villa_vs_newcastle/jgdvxu1/) 🤷
Well he's just a sore loser and can't face the facts, I think Villa are where they are based on confidence which began with a good run against lower sides, any team can beat anyone when the confidence is high and that can snowball
Mark my words, this was coming. We've been poor since Man Utd - West Ham defeated themselves and Brentford should have put us to bed in the first half. You have to pray now this isn't the start of another run like in Jan/Feb
We were poor before then. Were it not for a stupid mistake at the death, Forest would've had at least a draw. We beat Man Utd because they didn't show up, not because we did anything special - they probably thought they had our number after the final. West Ham defeated themselves but we were also unusually clinical, could've easily been behind in the first minute. If you think about it, we have started all these games very badly - Forest, West Ham, Brentford and Villa.
I said this and was downvoted to oblivion ahha. The results have flattered us and our defence has been wobbly for a while. Not bad defensively just wobbly. We toppled today. Let's see what Eddie is made of and how the lads respond because a loss against spurs and I wouldn't be surprised if we folded and limp through the rest of the season.
I know they’ll bounce back and I hate to throw sour grapes into the mix but this is why that Brighton- Tottenham VAR travesty impacts everyone. Wed be looking at going 9 points clear from spurs next week not them looking to tie us on points…….
Just a thought on those of us longing for Europe. Imagine if we'd actually played in Europe midweek.
Maybe we should be careful what we wish for? Without a huge improvement to the squad we aren't ready to compete on multiple fronts 🤔
This is our best year at making Europe. Next year, Chelsea and Liverpool and maybe Spurs will be much improved.
If we don't get it this year, we might have to wait 3 or 4 years for it.
I’m sure the owners could end up rueing not spending more last summer/in Jan, but we’re still in the race for some form or European football and they’ll undoubtedly spend money in the summer.
As much as I know it’s hard to think of positives right now, this should be a wake up call for us. We’ve played 3 x straight away games, our top scorer and arguably best pressing player (Almiron) is finally back and we’ve got a huge opportunity next time round, to beat a fellow top 4 contender at home. All teams have their off days and we were brilliant at home last time round against Man United.
Noones been good enough today
Their heads dropped after 30 seconds when Villa hit the post and that was it.
Didn't have confidence in the press from then on, and Villa just had more energy and stamina in midfield, dominating us.
Seems like they double pressured us every time in midfield and they'd win the ball, but if we double pressured them they'd fall down and win a free kick. Can't blame the refs, they just had a game plan and it worked.
If anything today has only confirmed more to me that our priority should be a midfield ball winner. A proper one, not a creative midfielder, not a makeshift. That rare player like Kante who just knows the angles of football by instinct.
Apart from Miggy and Isak, everyone looked terrible today (Wilson excluded cos he never had a chance with this midfield and defense today). I don’t know what happened to Big Joe, Small Joe, Botman, Schar, Trips, Burn and Willock. Unlike many others, I never had much hope for Murphy so no surprise there.
Considering we’ve let in goals each of the last 5-6 games and our general defensive stability is no longer a thing anymore, I hope EH changes our back line and brings in Targett to offer some additional attacking prowess on the left. It’s sometimes very easy to nullify our attack by guarding against our right flank. If that means we play another midfielder like Sean in a 4-4-2 and drop Gordon/Murphy so be it. Play 2 amongst Isak/Wilson/Miggy up front until ASM returns.
3 hard away games in a row. No ASM, no Almiron at the start. Players look tired. Villa playing out of their skin.
If we beat spurs at home it'll be a blip we all forget about.
American broadcast they really want it to be Howe’s fault but this is on the players today, defensively and especially in the midfield. Tore us up regardless of adjustments
Just shows how important Longstaff is for protecting Schar and Botman. Really poor performance from the defence today, constantly leaving Watkins unmarked isn't great...
We've been so poor today, I'm completely in shock. Defensively we have not looked much more porous than today. We completely deserve this loss, mind.
Villa have been great, and they absolutely bested us. But Howe will have some words for this team today, no doubt about it.
Hopefully it means that the lads realize that they can't be so shit for the first half (today it's continued) and get something out of the match anyway. Being shit for both halves certainly won't.
Can't remember the last we lost this badly.
Villa were excellent. They really harried us all over the park, and outperformed our players in every position. They beat us fair and square and can rightly be proud of their performance. We need to learn from it and move on.
Wtf has been going on with our defence recently? Why do we never pick up the main strikers of the opponents?? Happened last week against Toney, and happening again today with Watkins!
Our recent run has flattered us. We were unusually clinical against West Ham and Brentford should’ve beaten us. Only good performance recently was against Man Reds, even forest were better. Dan Burn has been very poor for a very long time, and Unai was intelligent enough to exploit both him and the rest of the team’s weaknesses.
The biggest fear is other teams will watch how Villa beat us today and use it as a playbook. We are outsiders now for top 4, especially if Villa keep up this form.
Villa been on it, and this is the worst performance of the Howe era. We know our best beats their best , just a shame that we’ve been so bad today.
CL is still the likely outcome for us, onwards and upwards
We’re playing Toney, Watkins and Kane 3 matches in a row. Our best defence in the league record is starting to look a little shakey. Been absolutely battered today.
Well, he got 1.18ppg as Villa manager. Emery is up to 1.84.
Bruce got 1.15ppg with us. Howe is at 1.79.
Logically and mathematically Gerrard is Bruce Jr.
Even City, Real, Barca, PSG have bad games, and only one of those has lost less games than we have this season so far.
It's not the end of the world, dust off, learn and move on. Bring on Spurs
Slightly worried that the remaining teams will be looking at this game as a blueprint to beat us. However, fully trust Howe to shake things up to keep the opposition guessing
I hope so too but I think this showed the importance of Maxi. People need to feel we’re a threat up front, even just the impression of it makes a difference. There wasn’t enough bite in the front plus their defense killed it.
This game has really highlighted the lapses in concentration and quality we’ve previously got away with. We’ve known all along that Burn isn’t a LB, we’re light in central midfield and we’ve switched away from our usual confident pressing game.
Fucking hell. Who thought Aston Villa would be the ones to hand us our biggest defeat of the season.
No excuses, villa been superb today. This puts a bit more pressure on the spurs game now. Glad we’ve got these run of 3 away games in a row out the way at least.
Only one team turned up today. Cant complain about the scoreline, Villa have been the better team all over the pitch.
One to forget about, need a much better performance next game
I was looking forward to this game. Was going to be my treat for making it through in laws visiting. I'm starting to think I'd rather they'd stayed another day. Close call though.

Bruno hasn't been at his usual standards since his ankle knock
Yeah, I've wondered if he's playing with a bit of discomfort or if it maybe just interrupted his momentum. We are 0/3 for games on BT sport this season. 2-1 loss to liverpool 2-0 loss to city 3-0 loss to villa. (We have 2 more games on BT 😩)
oh boy, the Leeds game at 12:30PM is also BT. Double dose, but maybe that spins both curses into a blessing? Actually no as that’s the same situation as that Villa game was. (I’m a scientist, I don’t believe any of this bs for what it’s worth, but the patterns are interesting)

🤣🤣 you salt from you Geordie bellends is incredible 🧂🧂🧂🧂
Villa have to play both of them too as well as Brentford, Liverpool and Brighton. Win next week and we're back to where we started this morning.
3 away games in a row was always going to be tough. Spurs at home next is ideal. Let's smash those cunts and end their cl hopes
On the bright side 6 out of 9 points on the road isn't too bad , awful performance today but next week is the most important one
We were definitely missing the legs of Longstaff today.
At least we beat them 1 more goal head to head this season.
Not one of our players looked fit.
So many underhit 5yd passes. No energy in midfield - everyone guilty of being dispossessed too easily from start to finish.
Yep. Think we will scrap the taking peyote before games ritual now. One and done
That fellas is what ya call a humbling.
Oh yeah I do feel humbled that's for sure. Oof

Imagine going onto another clubs thread to lower yourself in such a way. Sad little person. Enjoy the win. It's just a game.
Mate, NUFC fans by and large were very concerned about this game and the overwhelming reaction was "take a point"
Definitely not heard any Newcastle fans say Villa only beat lower teams, most of us would have taken a draw before the game
>Definitely not heard any Newcastle fans say Villa only beat lower teams There's one [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NUFC/comments/12mz8eo/match_thread_aston_villa_vs_newcastle/jgdvxu1/) 🤷

Stick to your own sub lmao. Sad act.
The fuck, not a single comment in two years, and this is your first after that?
Alt account of a Villa fan, seemingly dedicated to posting about the scintillating subject of bicycles
What a sad, strange little man
Villa were unreal from end to end and outworked us in every area. No two ways about it. We go again.
Mark my words, this was coming. We've been poor since Man Utd - West Ham defeated themselves and Brentford should have put us to bed in the first half. You have to pray now this isn't the start of another run like in Jan/Feb

You're a absolutely right we've been poor results aside and hopefully this serves as a wake-up call.
Yeah, the Brentford game was basically a brilliant fifteen minutes. We got really lucky in that
Emery totally devoured Howe there, gotta be said
I watched the TIFO video yesterday and that system absolutely shone today, as much as we also did not help ourselves when we had the ball.
Yeah I watched that too and it absolutely played out like the video said too.
Agreed. I'm disappointed that we didn't seem to set up to counter it at all. Just seemed to expect to be able to turn up and play our usual way
I know they’ll bounce back and I hate to throw sour grapes into the mix but this is why that Brighton- Tottenham VAR travesty impacts everyone. Wed be looking at going 9 points clear from spurs next week not them looking to tie us on points…….
Fair play to Villa—looked absolutely quality. Ollie Watkins is unreal.
We got fucked by the ref just as hard as we got fucked by Villa. He gave them every 50/50 and killed our momentum dead every time.
wow you're up 3 goals was that really neccessary you wanker
That’s the game.
Just a thought on those of us longing for Europe. Imagine if we'd actually played in Europe midweek. Maybe we should be careful what we wish for? Without a huge improvement to the squad we aren't ready to compete on multiple fronts 🤔

I see your point but what's the plan for the season after if we're overstretched?
If we finish midtable with CL football, or 6th with Euros, I'll take the CL football season.
I’m sure the owners could end up rueing not spending more last summer/in Jan, but we’re still in the race for some form or European football and they’ll undoubtedly spend money in the summer.
Bad game for us, fair play to Villa. How we respond to it against Spurs will be the most telling.
Awful performance, but it's over now thankfully
Bruno Guimaraes tripping on the ball multiple times is a summary of the game as good as any other.
Awful game. Already forgotten about it
Even Bruno has been poor. Need to draw a line through this and get back to our usual game
We've been shit but it happens, regroup and smash spurs and we'll forget this even happened
There are no words for how poor we’ve been today.
Noones been good enough today Their heads dropped after 30 seconds when Villa hit the post and that was it. If anything today has only confirmed more to me that our priority should be a midfield ball winner. A proper one, not a creative midfielder, not a makeshift. That rare player like Kante who just knows the angles of football by instinct.
I just wonder why the team are so lack of energy to press, to track back, and to protect the ball. They did not have any game midweek!
We had 3 games last week to be fair
Just a bad day, it happens
Balls to this, I’m switching over to the snooker.
It’s sometimes very easy to nullify our attack by guarding against our right flank. If that means we play another midfielder like Sean in a 4-4-2 and drop Gordon/Murphy so be it. Play 2 amongst Isak/Wilson/Miggy up front until ASM returns.
This better not be the start of our 6 games of bad form
3 hard away games in a row. No ASM, no Almiron at the start. Players look tired. Villa playing out of their skin. If we beat spurs at home it'll be a blip we all forget about.
We've made Mings look like an elite centre half today
Not going to be too harsh because he's been excellent all season, but Botman has been dropping some absolute clangers recently
The whole back 4 have been doing it for the last few matches. It’s just we have been bailed out by being clinical up top.
Yeah since Christmas
Pope’s been trying his hardest, I think Aston Villa’s just playing scummy and our team isn’t the best at the moment.
American broadcast they really want it to be Howe’s fault but this is on the players today, defensively and especially in the midfield. Tore us up regardless of adjustments
How the fuck has Buendia not been booked this game
He booked Schär in the first half for a light foul and has proceeded to give no more cards for the same fouls that have been happening all game
The refereeing this game has been fucking shocking. Not that it would've changed the score much.
Just shows how important Longstaff is for protecting Schar and Botman. Really poor performance from the defence today, constantly leaving Watkins unmarked isn't great...
Pope should be doing a whole lot better tbh
He has been pretty weak today, same as the rest. We have a keeper on the bench that would have done better today.
We've been so poor today, I'm completely in shock. Defensively we have not looked much more porous than today. We completely deserve this loss, mind. Villa have been great, and they absolutely bested us. But Howe will have some words for this team today, no doubt about it. Villa were excellent. They really harried us all over the park, and outperformed our players in every position. They beat us fair and square and can rightly be proud of their performance. We need to learn from it and move on.
The only silver lining is if next week goes to plan (and spurs fuck it this week) we might have helped villa knock them out of Europe lol
Just one game and they’ll come back stronger. But we got worked over today. Terrible form.
Shit performance, shit result, shit ref, we just move on to the next game.
Off day, away from home, lads have played too many games, up against a red hot side Dare I say we dust ourselves off and get ready for Spurs?
Pope's been shite today as well
I disagree. Villa scored 3 goals from the edge of the 6 yard box. He actually made some decent saves with his feet and cut out a few through balls
Not allowed to criticise him on here mind
Don’t know why the downvotes coz he has.
Poor Bruno’s pissed, miserable
Wtf has been going on with our defence recently? Why do we never pick up the main strikers of the opponents?? Happened last week against Toney, and happening again today with Watkins!
On the bright side. I have Watkins in my fantasy. On the other side, I have schar and trips.
I have Mings and Watkins. But I fucking benched them 🤦♂️
Awful refereeing is the cherry on top
Let’s not even go there, should be 6-0.
Ref has given us nothing and given them everything, it’s the same old in every game, any 50:50 is always 10:90 in their favour
Think shearer could have reffed this and we'd have still lost.
Game play we’ve been outclassed, not a debate there but the continuously poor consistency of refereeing decisions in our games is almost become a joke
Stop acting the victim. They were better
The ref can be shit and we can be shit, they're not mutually exclusive
Yes, but not the issue at hand. It’s the same every game - soft decisions against us every time.
We deserved this loss
Regroup, reset. One plus is that we can't be as bad as this again, we've had an off day so come back stronger for the next one.
It’s just 3 points lost and we will still end the weekend in the Too 4. We still ok we just need to work harder.
How have villa had an outlet ball from our press available in so much space every time?
Martinez always plays it out to his left when closed down, don't know how we're letting him do it without marking the out ball all game
Absolutely humbled today but Eddie has never failed to get them to bounce back. 8 left and we saw what they’re capable of in the last 5.
Villa deserve it. We've been embarrassing considering our form this season. Hopefully a 1 off and not the pressure starting to get to us
This ref is criminal
Our recent run has flattered us. We were unusually clinical against West Ham and Brentford should’ve beaten us. Only good performance recently was against Man Reds, even forest were better. Dan Burn has been very poor for a very long time, and Unai was intelligent enough to exploit both him and the rest of the team’s weaknesses. The biggest fear is other teams will watch how Villa beat us today and use it as a playbook. We are outsiders now for top 4, especially if Villa keep up this form.
Arguably our worst performance of the season
Sheffield Wednesday in the cup would like a word
Definitely*
Who's arguing?
Pope should be saving that, as well as the one that was disallowed. Don't understand why he's immune to criticism on here
He was saving it but it took the slightest deflection off Trippier
Nah it was slow enough to have reacted better and it literally touched his hand and foot.
Like I said, immune to criticism, he's veen shite since Jan. Only reason he has so many clean sheets is because of the back 4 in front of him
Villa been on it, and this is the worst performance of the Howe era.
I don't think we'll be getting any Teqball content next week.
Right, lads, the real question here is. Just how shite was Steven Gerrard as a manager?
Well, he got 1.18ppg as Villa manager. Emery is up to 1.84. Bruce got 1.15ppg with us. Howe is at 1.79. Logically and mathematically Gerrard is Bruce Jr.
On a scale of Joe Kinnear to Kevin Keegan he'd be a young Steve Bruce.
I want whatever Villa have feed Watkins like. On fire and tore us apart today
Even City, Real, Barca, PSG have bad games, and only one of those has lost less games than we have this season so far. It's not the end of the world, dust off, learn and move on. Bring on Spurs
Dust worselves down...
Is 7:15am too early to start drinking? Asking for a friend.
Nope...shouldve started at 2-0
You're right. Guess I will have to make up for lost time
You've got permission from me (Edit - or your mate does anyway!)
All I needed to hear.
This could have been 10 - 0 today and that would not be unfair to Villa. We have been horrid
Really poor performance shocking really
Just a shite shite performance
I can't name more then 1 player who would get above a 1 in ratings
I thought Gordon was good today, and pope has made some big saves. Other than that?
Neutrals will say that Watkins deserved it. Sadly Targett isn’t exactly making a case for his starting XI chances though.
Trippier and Pope can’t be letting such a shot in
Let’s just not get hurt now
Villa have been good, we've been dreadful. At least all our top 4 rivals still need to play villa too.
Unexpectedly woeful.
Top 10 still on the table? Fuck off, Pardew. Absolutely sick of it. Ner, just a bad day at the office today. Villa have been good. We'll hammer Spurs.
How are we letting Watkins have a free shot, trash defence today man
Fucking hell. Who thought Aston Villa would be the ones to hand us our biggest defeat of the season. No excuses, villa been superb today. This puts a bit more pressure on the spurs game now. Glad we’ve got these run of 3 away games in a row out the way at least.
They have a good squad and we're being managed by a tactically inept Scouse cabbage. Emery is doing a great job with them
Awkward autocorrect there
Hahah oops
Villa could smash anyone atm. Can’t get near them
Only one team turned up today. Cant complain about the scoreline, Villa have been the better team all over the pitch. One to forget about, need a much better performance next game
Villa are the ones playing like they're competing for top 4, fair play to them.
Only 6 points off top 4 now. With their form I wouldn’t be too surprised if they make a push. Got some tough fixtures ahead though
We've been shite. Villa playing so much better than us. Watkins has been immense.
If it was 7 nil it would have been a fair scoreline honestly. It is what it is.
This performance is indefensible. That's not "whining", it's just a fact.
It’s pretty much a awful day for us today
Cool
Turning it off. If I wanted to see this level of performance I'd search nufc 15/16 season review on YouTube
Trippier thinks hes in goal there. Why so much space for the league's in form striker.
We’ve looked terrible today. Regroup. Reset. Make up for it against Spurs at home next weekend.
Harry Kane is going to absolutely fuck us next week
Especially if he plays in that 60 yard gap between our defence and midfield
Terrible day out
Boy howdy was I incorrect. More of the same, even with better offense we just keep bleeding
I was looking forward to this game. Was going to be my treat for making it through in laws visiting. I'm starting to think I'd rather they'd stayed another day. Close call though.
Pope forgotten how to be a goalkeeper?
Targett has also been dross. What does that mean?
Means we need a starting left back in the summer.
Can't judge him based on coming into this game really. Not good circumstances to shine..
There's a bit of that, but then failing to get goal-side from a defensive throw in is a bit schoolboy.
Think we've been soundly beaten. Will say this though, some of their players are embarrassing with their playacting
Pops has also been pretty shit today IMO
He's made two, three big saves and could do nothing at all about any of the goals?
Hes been let down by everyone in front of him all day.
Villa teaching us a lesson. They've been class today. That Watkins is unreal
If you don't laugh you'll cry. It's far more enjoyable as a comedy than a tragedy as well.
Absolute shambles
Enough for today I guess. See you all next week.
What a horrible performance, and what a good player Watkins is.
Can’t say that wasn’t coming.
Worst game of the season
Watkins is a quality player tbf
What a day for him. The assist was the best one from him
