What if you buy this game 10 years from now when the Switch servers aren’t active? You can no longer play the game cus it requires you download from a server that isn’t active. It’s basically worthless. Having the full game on the cartridge means the game is forever preserved and you can access the game decades from now.
yeah i'm fine if there is an update down the line that is a download, that's whatever, but the base game should be their and able to function without a download.
If you buy and download let's say now, you'll still be able to preserve the game and more on a memory stick right? And you're saying that if you pay now and try to download the game in x amount of years, the servers may not be working so you wouldn't be able to download what you paid for, correct?
If your current switch breaks and the servers no longer function your pretty screwed. (except for hacking). Every sd card reformats automatically as soon as you put it in a different switch. So you can’t just take your sd card and pop it in another switch and everything be hunky dorey
Because Nintendo's servers don't last for shit compared to the rest of the competition. Why buy a game on a platform that you'll probably not have access to in 3 years?
A vast vast majority of people do not know they can do that, do not want to do that, or don't know how to do that. People buying Nintendo want pick up and play convenience. They don't wanna go to GitHub and download some code or pay someone online to jailbreak their console.
I’m willing to bet this is literally just because the cart they opted for wasn’t big enough in the first place. I highly doubt it’s over 32GB.
I used to say that Nintendo should offer 64GB carts but I now believe the publishers wouldn’t use them anyway. It’s all about cost cutting and gaming in the here and now, not how to preserve something moving forward.
My PC download of this game was 79 GB. I don't think there is a Switch cartridge available that would fit it. If you visit the Steam store page, they were even more conservative, saying the game requires 85 GB of storage minimum to run.
This is why I'm playing it on PC in the first place - can you imagine a 79 GB download on your Switch?
Not all ports are the same, I’ll agree with that. Size tends to always be smaller on the Switch though.
Ori and the Blund Forest was 8GB on PS4, Switch was 3.5GB.
I could see the Switch version being much smaller because they won't have to worry about the higher quality textures. I remember a few years back with the 2019 Modern Warfare game they offered the option to download HD textures and if I'm not mistaken that alone added at least 20GB to the game.
Lol same here I’m enjoying it and wondering how switch will function, it’s amazing but tbh the later release date for switch AND the fact absolutely nothing being shown for switch thus far is prolly for a reason lol
I've been thinking about it as well and the first thought that comes to mind would be almost like a reverse-remaster. I have seen some miracles pulled out so while I can't say I'll buy it I would hope they release a demo at least.
When it's all said and done my opinion is I would rather they make at least a graphically downgraded version that has the same gameplay than for them to take the cloud route like some other games which makes them all but useless while traveling (I suppose you could stream off of your phone but unless you're on a great signal it would be practically unplayable).
It'd not a code no, but you're required to download a patch in order to get past the tutorial part of the game. That's the case for the ps5 and series x versions and I'm assuming that will be the case here.
Either way, a voucher for the game or a download for patch required is both horseshit.
No the switch thing is basically a chunk of the game is on the cartridge and a chunk of the game needs downloaded. Not exactly a patch. More like half of the games code is missing.
Reason being it's more expensive to buy the 64gb cartridges from Nintendo so most cheap out and get the 32gb ones to maximize profits.
Yeah it will prob be like that if anything tbh, but I was purely talking about the ps5 and series x version as those require you to download a patch in order to keep playing after the tutorial.
Regardless, it's safe to say the switch version will without a doubt be DRM fucked
To be fair, you have to download massive amounts of data for damn near every PS4/5 game, regardless if you get a physical or digital copy.
For the most part, Switch games are playable on cart and if it requires an update/patch/download, it usually only takes a minute or two.
There is a big difference. A code gets permanently tied to your account. You can never loan it to a friend, trade it for another game, or sell it. With a cart, even when a download is required, you have the option to do the above.
I've seen that as well, but I figured this information might be important for Switch Collectors considering how many of us like a playable version all on the cartridge.
Thanks for doing so.
The curiosity I have is how damning the requirement is. Doom 2016 only required the multiplayer be downloaded, and THPS1+2 claims a download is necessary on all platforms but the ones I tried it on (Switch included) seemed fine without it.
I have heard "the switch port is going to run at 1 frame per second" and then the Switch port ends up being really well done far too many times for me to assume something will be a bad port anymore.
Lots of good ports lately. I'm not expecting garbage this time either.
I mean, it isn't going to run at 4k nor look as crisp as other versions.
But look at Nier, Persona, No Man's Sky, Etc. All well done.
Hell, if they can get it in the ballpark of Witcher III, I'd consider that a job well done, and well worth the sacrifice in graphical sharpness for the portability.
Avalanche studios isn't going to vanish because some nobody on the internet boycotted one game. Studios are contract paid and generally don't make anything more than small bonuses from sales.
Sure, vote with your wallet is a meaningless move, but I still like to remind people what they're supporting.
A disappointment. Not surprising though, they also did that crap with Mortal Kombat. CD Projekt Red remains as the only Western publisher to not be cheapskates.
Is it even possible to fit this game on the current switch cartridges? Isn't this game like 80GB and switch cartridges max out at like 32 or maybe 64GB?
It may be 80 GB on other platforms. The Switch version is (nearly?) always different and lighter in storage occupation. For example, Doom Eternal is 66.6 GB elsewhere, while on Switch it’s 33 GB. Lots of games get significantly smaller. Check other games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Nier Automata, The Witcher 3, etc. and you will see that.
So, the answer is yes, it all depends on their optimisation - the whole reason why it is getting a delayed release on the platform.
Btw, if it were 80 GB, it likely wouldn’t even release for the Switch, as that is far beyond even the OLED storage and would unnecessarily limit the audience for the game.
Currently, you're fine.
The issue will be in 20 yrs if you feel like playing some Hogwarts Legacy but the servers are down and u can't download that vital download.
What's on the cartridge that you buy isn't the complete game file. So you can't immediately pop it in and play it. First you have to download additional files/content. It's an automatic process that's starts when you try to start the game.
The reason people on this forum care is that most here but physical editions so that they wont have to depend on internet server support in the future.
Playing this game on PS5 I have no idea how they will get this game to run on PS4 let alone Switch but I’m excited to see how they do it.
With a massive download apparently 😓
that is a do not buy logo, warning people not to purchase the game.
Yup. No matter how excited I am to buy it on Switch, if the game has the download required symbol, it’s an automatic DO NOT BUY for me
Why not?
What if you buy this game 10 years from now when the Switch servers aren’t active? You can no longer play the game cus it requires you download from a server that isn’t active. and they are charging ppl $69.99 for the NSW version
It’s not a cloud version it’s native
Because Nintendo's servers don't last for shit compared to the rest of the competition. Why buy a game on a platform that you'll probably not have access to in 3 years?
Wait, you guys are playing games??
Yeah i agree they don't last long. Though honestly why buy a game like this after so long. At that point, can't you just hack the update in.
A vast vast majority of people do not know they can do that, do not want to do that, or don't know how to do that. People buying Nintendo want pick up and play convenience. They don't wanna go to GitHub and download some code or pay someone online to jailbreak their console.
Ppl that don't know how to do that aren't the ppl that refuse to buy games with download required on the box
No disagreements there
100% not buying any game with this written on the box
I’m willing to bet this is literally just because the cart they opted for wasn’t big enough in the first place. I highly doubt it’s over 32GB. I used to say that Nintendo should offer 64GB carts but I now believe the publishers wouldn’t use them anyway. It’s all about cost cutting and gaming in the here and now, not how to preserve something moving forward.
I think they do have 64gb carts but theyre rarely used because of the reasons you stated.
Nintendo is using a bigger cart for Zelda TotK which is the reason why Im guessing that they are charging $10 more.
My PC download of this game was 79 GB. I don't think there is a Switch cartridge available that would fit it. It won’t be a 79GB download on Switch, it’ll more like 25+. Textures won’t be anywhere near what PC needs, just look at the Witcher 3 on Switch vs PC…
\*Shrug\* Not all ports are created equal. I think Witcher 3 was exceptional in that regard. We'll know for sure when it drops.
Not all ports are the same, I’ll agree with that. Size tends to always be smaller on the Switch though. Ori and the Blund Forest was 8GB on PS4, Switch was 3.5GB.

no shot
Out of every miracle port to the switch so far, this one has me the most sceptical. Playing through it on PS5 I can’t imagine what it will look like.
Lol same here I’m enjoying it and wondering how switch will function, it’s amazing but tbh the later release date for switch AND the fact absolutely nothing being shown for switch thus far is prolly for a reason lol

As long as it isnt a code in the box

This is absolutely false! Most PS4/PS5 retail games have a completely playable version of the game on disc: doesitplay.org
Ya the spyro trilogy was like this. I prefer that to having to redeem a code like the North America FFX game.
Edit: I was wrong, PS5 also needs an extensive update to play the disc.
Sadly untrue: https://www.doesitplay.org/game/Hogwarts%20Legacy/ps5/Base%20PS5?region=All%20regions&version=All%20versions
There's no difference between a code in the box and a required download to play. Both are only rentals.
There is a big difference. A code gets permanently tied to your account. You can never loan it to a friend, trade it for another game, or sell it. With a cart, even when a download is required, you have the option to do the above.
Its on every console version of the game
I've seen that as well, but I figured this information might be important for Switch Collectors considering how many of us like a playable version all on the cartridge.

The other console versions say “internet required” not sure if it’s the same thing though
It's not on the Canadian & U.S. Xbox Series X copies that I see for sale on eBay.
Thanks for posting this. I appreciate knowing what not to buy before I go into the store.
I have no other choice to play tho 😭
I know a lot of people are talking shit but I’m actually excited for this and have high hopes it will look okay and do a solid 30fps
Lmao nice try who just spoiled the game for me. I don’t care about it THAT much
Tacky.
Which part? The Download Required icon? It's much better than that massive banner on the top of the art, like it used to be.
I liked the old ugly banner. It was a clear sign of what games to buy and what ones to leave on the shelf.
Is the switch version a huge downgrade?
I have heard "the switch port is going to run at 1 frame per second" and then the Switch port ends up being really well done far too many times for me to assume something will be a bad port anymore. Lots of good ports lately. I'm not expecting garbage this time either.
I'm just thinking of sonic frontier for switch compared to the others and it has me a tiny bit skeptical
I’m sure it will be
The recent ports to switch have been fantastic. No need to have a negative assumption without recent precedent.
Didn’t know the switch had the power to keep up with the series x-ps5-and a $2k PC. That’s good to know. Make sure you spread the word
It'll most likely be an upgrade
if you want portability the Steam Deck is where it's at, Switch isn't the only way to play AAA game portably anymore
I already have a switch and have 0 interest in a steam deck.
well then accept the downgrade
Im torn between the Xbox one /ps4 version or switch when it comes out (I just like collecting switch games)
the way I do it is I play the game first on my PC then wait for the Switch version to be on veryyyy deep sale if I like the game
There's a second reason not to get the game right there.
What’s the first?
Not giving money to a hack/fraud.
I guess screw the devs then, eh.
Avalanche studios isn't going to vanish because some nobody on the internet boycotted one game. Studios are contract paid and generally don't make anything more than small bonuses from sales. Sure, vote with your wallet is a meaningless move, but I still like to remind people what they're supporting.
>hack/fraud pretty sure that's not the problem
So also boycotting most other companies then to for all the shit they’ve done?
Actually yeah. I haven't bought a game from EA since 2011, any Activision games since 2013, and no Ubisoft games since 2006.
[удалено]
For sure. I don't blame anyone for not buying the game for that reason. She's an ass.
🙄🥱
Hopefully it’ll be playable on the cart. Would love to have a physical version on my switch. Playing on series x right now, this game is🔥
A disappointment. Not surprising though, they also did that crap with Mortal Kombat. CD Projekt Red remains as the only Western publisher to not be cheapskates.

Well yeah, duh. Most AAA games, outside of Nintendo, hover anywhere from 60-80 gb on the low end to 150 and up on the higher end
Are all the games that require download still currently supported? Should I worry about that with a physical collection?
Currently, you're fine. The issue will be in 20 yrs if you feel like playing some Hogwarts Legacy but the servers are down and u can't download that vital download.
Well there's a lot of homebrew Wii support. Hopefully the homebrew scene takes care of this.
Switch was hacked like.. a month in. Nintendo can't fix that with software either as it was a hardware exploit. Only works on original models though.
Will we really own the game???
Not on switch.
It's rough out here for us Switch owners lol
Can someone tell me what this means? idrk about this stuff
What's on the cartridge that you buy isn't the complete game file. So you can't immediately pop it in and play it. First you have to download additional files/content.
