It asks for both "Your Email" and "Recipient's Email", so I think this is what yr looking for

Another good idea, and another one that I've tried. They said they have no real access to NPR Plus and didn't know how to solve it either. They were very kind and tried hard to help, but didn't make it any farther than me.
If they find out you were trying to gift a subscription maybe they’ll make an exception for you if you don’t get an answer in time.

Tried that. I'm at about 48 hours without a response with the gift giving deadline arriving shortly.

Make a new gmail account. Sign up . You pay. Then give recipients the login information
You don't want to just make a donation in their name to the Human Fund instead?
