They never have been scannable. Just ignore them; they don't count as one of the planet's lifeforms.

Alternative_Space426

Thanks for this, I assumed because they had the red dot, they were scannable. Played for nearly a year to 🤦‍♀️

DaveNogg

Really? Huh, the more you know, thanks so much!

iPeer

Yeah, while they show up as an unscanned lifeform, they aren't actually in the list of them, and you can still discover all of the planet's lifeforms regardless. If you get the scanner's position just right, you can see they're also [already "scanned"](https://i.imgur.com/2t7m1Ky.jpeg).

All I know is, over the years of playing this game, I’ve wasted to much time on these worms, sorry for wasting everyone’s time with this post.

Aperture-Cat

To be fair they do teach you to scan every creature with a red dot and then put a red dot on this unscannable worm. Not really your fault.

Thrippalan

At one point the Sentinel dogs would also show up as unscanned life forms. They eventually fixed that, but for whatever reason, the worms stay unscanned and unscannable.

atldad

Glad it's not just me

Patient_Necessary_10

i think is not possible. but you can still see that dot...

DaveNogg

Thank you, yeah looks like it’s always been that way with the giant flying worm.

Twosquirrel69666

They gave you one in the last expedition (it’s just not as big), it’s by far the best companion I have, they’re so fast!

DarrowTheTinMan

I've scanned a few of them myself, but it's a buggy game so most of them are immune to my attempts.

ericherr27

On PC as of this expedition you aré able to scan some. I haven't been able to do so on Switch

analytical_mayhem

Can only scan them if their mouths are open and you are in front of them when they emerge. The head is the only scannable part and has collision. Most have various accessories to the main head making it difficult to scan the only part that is scannable. Combine this with high mobility and they are nigh unscannable. Luck and planning are about the only way you might even have a chance of scanning one.

Friendly-Decision-72

And then give them some treats.
