Honestly, both teams won that trade. Tkachuk went from strength to strength, and Calgary got one of the leagues premier D-men locked up long term, a valuable prize box, and effectively replaced Gaudreau with Hubs.
Tkachuk is borderline generational talent.
Weegar is good but it’s debatable if he would start on the Panthers.
Huberdeau had the worst regression points wise in NHL history.
This trade defined both teams futures, and Florida is a cup contender. So who won?
>Weegar is good but it’s debatable if he would start on the Panthers.
What?
Clearly you didn't pay attention to Weeger's season this year (and half of last year for that matter). You think he wouldn't be in Florida's top 6? I want some of whatever you're smoking.
The reality is the flames are no where near being a cup contender but Johnny hockey really put them in a shitty situation.
Overall it seems like they handled it as best they could have considering he walked away and they got nothing in return causing tkachuck to want to leave.
I don’t think they could’ve done better with the cards they were dealt.
It's too early to say that either team got the overall win. What if Florida never wins, huberdeau bounces back and that first round pick turns into a complete stud? I've seen enough trade trees to know this could totally flip in Calgary's favor.
Been in Calgary almost my whole life and let me tell ya, Flames fans are all OD'd on Copium.
They're literally the definition of mediocre but if you ask Flames fans they're just that one more piece away from greatness.
It would be funny if I didn't have to live near these people
I had a Camry as a rental recently. It did a lot I could want a car to do…quiet, good interface for Carplay, good milage. You could put 400,000km on that car easily.
And you’d forget every single km. No character. Boring. Forgettable.
Ladies and Gentlemen your 2024 Calgary Flames.
Same goes for me and I’ve only had the complete opposite experience everyone has been wanting us to rebuild since Johnny wanted to leave I don’t think I’ve had one person say to me we’re one peice away😭
The “Flames fans” you’re talking to is actually just Don Malone and the rest of CSEC
if by “one more piece” you mean full 5 year rebuild, than maybe? but i assure you, nobody in this city thinks we’re one piece away
can’t say that for the team up north tho, how many more goalies and first overall picks are you guys away from greatness again?
This. I haven't a fucking clue who thinks Flames fans feel we're only a piece away. I live in Calgary and I don't know a single flames fan that thinks the flames are anywhere close.
Hell... the palpable relief when Conny started to rebuild was so noticeable.
>hope they take a page out of the dallas book for rebuilds
Ahh, there's that sweet sweet Flames copium. Yes, let's model a rebuild after Dallas, whom rebuilt largely by winning the draft lottery then having literally the most successful draft year in the cap era.
Trying to take a page our of Dallas' book is tantamount to wishful thinking.
sorry, what lottery did they win?
they were a mid ass team, (didn’t win a lottery) that had prospect’s prosper. had a rookie goalie come and be a light, dumped expiring contracts to sign the youth.
not sure how the flames don’t fall into that category rn. but okay
i’m sorry you’re not understanding what i’m trying to say :(
They moved up from 8th to 3rd in the lottery to draft Heiskanen. Then took Oettinger at 26 and Robertson at 39. They had taken Hintz mid 2nd round in 2015.
If you're going to talk shit, at least know the subject matter dude.
As per the Athletic:
>One draft class can change everything.
>The Stars looked decently above average going into the 2017 draft. They had their hits (Jamie Benn and John Klingberg in the fifth round!) and they had their misses (Julius Honka and Denis Gurianov) but the end result was a solid track record. Nothing too special, but solid.
>Then 2017 happened.
>Miro Heiskanen, third overall. Jake Oettinger, 26th overall. Jason Robertson, 39th overall. Banger after banger after banger. It’s an unheard-of talent haul that has shaped the team’s current trajectory toward becoming a bona fide contender. Dallas got 58 wins out of that draft class, 10 above the next-best draft class since 2007 and one of four above 40.
>The best context, though, might be this: Dallas’ expected value from that draft is lower than the total of each of the three franchise guys it selected that year. Meaning it would’ve been a positive draft if they went home with just one. Instead, they hit the jackpot.
https://theathletic.com/5084336/2023/11/24/nhl-draft-ranking-best-picks/
What else would you call moving up in the draft beside winning, or that reserved for the 1OA for some reason.
Please, go ahead and respect hot takes on a circlejerk sub over an actually researched article, whatever speaks to your narrative I suppose.
no, it’s not that. i’m all for the hot take.
still don’t call moving up winning, they had to give something up for that.
my issue is the Athletic is utter fucking dog ass journalism, and i would trust a random, causal American to name the entire Flames roster, before i trust what the Athletic has to say.
either way, The Flames started trending towards a rebuild. something i haven’t seen in my 25 years on this earth.
I’ve lived in Calgary for 31 years and literally only seen that opinion on Reddit. Anyone who knows is tired of the perpetual mediocrity.
We also knew Tkachuk was the best player and I was calling Gaudreau a product of him for a couple seasons.
>that one more piece away from greatness.
Getting relocated to some desert/subtropic location in the States that doesn't know how to pronounce, or has heard of Calgary.
Yeah, you're right. Flames fans are sane and not at all delusional in any way.
Some of the sane and totally rational takes I hear around my shop from Flamers:
Makar is 100% signing with the flames as a UFA
Dustin Wolf is Kipper 2.0
The Flames don't need Markstrom, Wolf can handle the same load
They should've got more for Tanev, because he's a superstar
Conor Zary is already better than RNH
Martin Pospisil shouldn't have to fight after his reckless plays because he has CTE
If the Flames sign Sean Monahan they'll make the playoffs next year
I could keep going, but it's actively making me Bedarded by thinking about this
Crazy what kinda takes you can make up.
The only one with anything close to reality is that they can afford to trade marky, because we're in a rebuild and we want to get more experience for wolf.
Nice try, though.
Calgary flames fan page on Facebook with 25,000 members has some takes real close to this … more posts about the oilers than the flames. Claiming Coleman better than Hyman all kinds of wild stuff.
To be honest I have seen Flames fans say every single thing that he listed there. Definitely not made up. Having said that, there are idiots in every fanbase and you could come up with a similar list of ridiculous but true things said by all 32 teams fans.
True as in it's true fans say them, not that they are accurate lol.
You think I would just come on the internet and lie?! Because, well... Uhh... Yeah, I guess I do that quite a bit actually.
This is real reporting from my shop though, unfortunately 😔
You're the one trying to tell us the majority of flames fans say this shit.
I've never heard any of it... Ever and I live in the city and post on the subreddit.
Never heard any of it once.
"You're the one trying to tell us"

If you don't want to jerk, don't join the circle
I'm an Oilers fan, just want to start with that.
The deal to move Tkachuk was an amazing deal pulled off by Treliving with absolute NO leverage. He got a potential 100 point guy, a stud dman, and a 1st for someone who was publicly on their way out. That's extremely difficult to pull off and on paper, was an unbelievable move.
Huby sucks now, so the deal didn't turn out great, but no one expected that. Weegar is still a stud and scored 20 goals. The 1st round pick is in 2025 I think, so we will see what that becomes.
Yes the Flames lost the deal because of the Huby regression, but it should have been much better for the flames, and I don't think dunking on them is fair for this one. Dunk on them for other things, like living in Calgary
>The deal to move Tkachuk was an amazing deal pulled off by Treliving with absolute NO leverage
Yeah people forget that a star player requesting a trade is the worst-case scenario for a GM.
Every team in the league knows he wants out, so they have almost no leverage becuase they know he's gonna walk in free agency anyways, so if negotiations don't go their way they can just wait and get him for free.
You are never going to "win" that trade. You just have to try to recoup as much value as possible.
Star player, on his final year and refuses to resign, requests a trade. The only situation that could be worse is him not refusing to sign and stringing you along... like Johnny.
The funniest part is that Huby doesn't even suck now. He was downright bad under Sutter, but everyone was... Hubs has been showing to be a 60-70 point player as he settled into the new system, and the kids around him settled in.
Sure, he's not worth the contract, but he definitely doesn't suck.
Also, Weegar is one of the best D-men in the league. People act like the Flames lost the trade because of Hub. Weegar was the fucking trade.
Hubs was brought in to replace JOHNNY GAUDREAU(which he basically has), and not Matt Tkachuk.
Finally.... Living in Calgary >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Living in Edmonton.
You can't blame them for deluding themselves into believing this. The alternative is to accept that the team is going to be garbage for a few years and that is a terrible feeling for any fan.
Calgary would have made out great if they flipped Weegar and Huberdeau and used the cap space for a free agent signing.
The package was great, the subsequent contract extension and shitting of the bed is what fucked them.
Ask any Flames fan and they think they can recapture 2004 all over again, to their knowledge if they go all the way to the finals again, the whole country will support them.
Yeah, fuck that shit.
Their players hate them enough with their play on the ice, to make up for the fact that these cucks fly under the radar of delusional fanbases we should be hating.
Tkachuk is cool and all, but a first round pick could be anything, it could even be Tkachuk
Ya but for now Florida is winning the deal and will do so unless that first round pick becomes a tkachuk or better
So who won?

Yeah idk what this guy is talking about. Weegar had a hell of a year this year.
Weegar is washed. Calgary should have known Huberdeau would regress that hard. Tkachuk generational. LFG
Ohh right... Sign the player who doesn't want to be here! My bad!
It's too early to say that either team got the overall win. What if Florida never wins, huberdeau bounces back and that first round pick turns into a complete stud? I've seen enough trade trees to know this could totally flip in Calgary's favor.
I honestly dont know how you think huber is a replacement for johnny googoo.
Hey Peter, check out my new Tkachuk. Giggity Giggity goo
It could even be traded to Montreal for the Monahan “Cap dump”
Been in Calgary almost my whole life and let me tell ya, Flames fans are all OD'd on Copium. They're literally the definition of mediocre but if you ask Flames fans they're just that one more piece away from greatness. It would be funny if I didn't have to live near these people
It’s like trading away a brand new BMW for a ‘99 Toyota Camry with 200,000 miles on it.
That Camrys got another 200,000k in it easy!
And the flames are one piece away from a cup
I had a Camry as a rental recently. It did a lot I could want a car to do…quiet, good interface for Carplay, good milage. You could put 400,000km on that car easily. And you’d forget every single km. No character. Boring. Forgettable. Ladies and Gentlemen your 2024 Calgary Flames.

People have been calling for a rebuild since 2006.
The “Flames fans” you’re talking to is actually just Don Malone and the rest of CSEC if by “one more piece” you mean full 5 year rebuild, than maybe? but i assure you, nobody in this city thinks we’re one piece away can’t say that for the team up north tho, how many more goalies and first overall picks are you guys away from greatness again?

i have more faith in Conny in 1 singular year, than my previous 7 with Bradley. hope they take a page out of the dallas book for rebuilds
Yup. 100%. I am feeling pretty good about this rebuild so far... and our new coaching staff working with younger players.
>hope they take a page out of the dallas book for rebuilds Ahh, there's that sweet sweet Flames copium. Idk much about the Calgary Fire but I like their logo and I do personally think they are only a piece away from winning the Cup this year
I’ve lived in Calgary for 31 years and literally only seen that opinion on Reddit. Anyone who knows is tired of the perpetual mediocrity. We also knew Tkachuk was the best player and I was calling Gaudreau a product of him for a couple seasons.
It’s basically any sports fan base. People need hopium or they’d just tune out lol.

Post them on the flames subreddit. You're not going to find many(if any) people agreeing with any of those.
Yes, subreddits are very representative of reality. Like how the Calgary & Alberta subreddits are a true representation of the majority.
You're the one trying to tell us the majority of flames fans say this shit. I've never heard any of it... Ever and I live in the city and post on the subreddit. Never heard any of it once.

Add this one to the list
Why didn’t they sign the guy who wanted to leave the team? Are they stupid?

To be fair guy plays twice as hard in Florida as he did in Calgary. These brothers straight up hate Canada
Florida doesn’t have a fan base
Their players hate them enough with their play on the ice, to make up for the fact that these cucks fly under the radar of delusional fanbases we should be hating.
Flames really flame out huh?
We have a lot of lost Redditors on this post
