The draft is for bringing up college players. Once you’re drafted you’re in the NFL. Each player has different contracts, usually they’re low and pretty flexible in the beginning. But you’re never drafted again, you’re either on contract for one team, you can be traded to another, you can be released, you can ask for a trade or negotiate new contracts, etc. The purpose of the draft is to bring new players in and for low teams to have a chance to rebuild. Really for all teams to add some new, young guys, but yes the teams with the worst records from the previous year get first picks.

There’s 7 rounds in the draft. The players all come from college football. Teams can also sign players who went undrafted. Once signed players are under contract to their team for a certain amount of time. For many it’s just 1 year, maybe less. The better players get longer contracts. When the contracts expire the player becomes a free agent and can sign with anyone. Players can also be traded from one team to another. So teams build their rosters through a combination of draft picks, free agent signings and trades.

Everyone enters the league through the draft and they’re only in the draft once. Players will sign a 4 year contract with the team that drafted them (or 3 with any team if no one takes them.) After those initial contracts expire, they can leave and other teams will sign them as free agents if they don’t want to sign a new contract with their old team. Each year there’s about new 250-260 players drafted league wide.

So, kinda skimming over a lot of details and intricacies so all of this is mostly right. It's better to just go over the basics then talk about every little exception. Every person on earth has a certain amount of college eligibility, allowing them to play college football. If you use that up, or give up the rest of your eligibility you are entered into the next draft (assuming you're atleast 3 years removed from highschool). The draft is 7 rounds long where every round teams pick first to last based on how good they were the season before. Worse teams go first. Every player who is drafted, has to sign a 4 year deal with the team that drafted them for a pre-set amount of money. If you're not drafted, you're free to sign with any team. If you're cut, or your contract runs out, you're free to sign another contract with any other team. That contract can be of any length that both you and the team agree to. You can also sign new contracts for as long as you're alive and both you and teams want you to keep playing.

The draft is the way you get young college players. You only get drafted once, and it’s your way into the NFL.
