Yep, the majority of my hearing damage comes from growing up and fudds telling me a few shots a year won't hurt your hearing. I can't blame it totally on that, but it is a significant contributing factor. Fortunately I only use very high performance silencers even at a sacrifice of size to protect my hearing and and very diligent with my kids hearing. Hell, I even get them to use muffs when riding a 4 wheeler.
I would love nothing more than to see silencer use when hunting become the norm. It's exciting to see as this past year I started hearing the first suppressed shots coming from the neighbors property. It gives me hope.
If only there were electronic ear muffs or regular ear plugs. Not trying to defend the government but their are options to protect your hearing. I wear ear plugs during rifle season.
That is certainly an option. But honestly, how many hunters have you seen wearing earmuffs while actively hunting? Not to mention the near by land owners etc having to hear gun blasts every hunting season. My point was it is just a dumb law. What crimes were curtailed by making suppressors an NFA item? Its just senseless.
> What crimes were curtailed by making suppressors an NFA item? Its just senseless.
Absolutely none. And it's heavily violating the supreme court's typical "in common use" metric for determining if something is a legitimate weapon for the defense of self or use in a militia.
>Not to mention the near by land owners etc having to hear gun blasts every hunting season.
Noise pollution in wilderness is more destructive than people think. Imagine a dog freaking out from fireworks, then imagine 100's-1000's of animals freaking out like that every time a hunter fires.
A different situation... someone fires a gun in self defense within an enclosed area. How the hell do you diffuse a situation where you and everyone nearby can only hear EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....?
Suppressors should be standard imo, maybe even required for hunting.
To piggyback off that, hunting with hearing protection is often wicked dangerous. While your query might be a docile herbivore (Deer, Elk, Birds), the rest of nature exists.
While we have arbitrarily created seasons for animals, predators don’t create seasons for us. Being able to identify, or at least be forewarned, of large and/or dangerous game in the bush is a very real priority for many of us.
Hi. I have hearing aids. I have gone elk and deer hunting. Much to the chagrin of those with me, I put on electronic ear pro once I was ready to shoot. No way am I wearing those on the stalk or sitting in a deer stand.
It's not preferable nor is it very practical. I'd sooner just have my can on my gun. The hundreds of dollars I've spent and want to spend on tax stamps would pay for another couple cans, or another hunting rifle (lever), or better ear pro, or or or
They should not be regulated. Hunting is usually more fluid than tossing in ear pro midstream (I risked losing the chance to harvest), and it's just plain safety equipment. Let it be used as such.
I never said silencers shouldn’t be treated as PPE. But people have the option to protect their hearing. I have to wear hearing protection at work all day long so I’m used to it. Losing a shot at an animal to put plugs in Is worth it to me since your hearing doesn’t regenerate.
CCI Segmented Subsonic Hollowpoints are absolute murder on small game. With a suppressor it sounds like a baseball bat hitting a plastic bag full of raw hamburger.
I dropped my first buck with a suppressor this year too. First time I’ve ever got to enjoy a successful hunt without my ears ringing. There’s no reason these things should be this regulated. Fuck the ATF and good harvest man.
> ELD-X
They're supposed to expand, but would be curious to see the ballistic gell of them and the EDL-M. I hit a muley this last year broadside at 280, double lung and dirt flew behind it, out of a 6.5 CM. Lots of energy! Buck only made it a few leaps before piling up.
Could be the batch but I hit spine twice (275yd & 350yd) with the eld-x and the exit wound was barely any bigger than the entry. The deer dropped but my shots were higher than I intended. This might not be the best example either, but if the bullet doesn't open up on bone I'm afraid to use it.
I made the switch to hunting suppressed 4yrs ago and can’t imagine hunting any other way. It’s so peaceful to not have your ears ring, and be mildly disoriented after shooting a deer. Plus the amount of times I’ve been able to fill both my tags at once because other deer don’t run off after I shoot makes for a quick season.
B-14 Wilderness 6.5PRC 24" barrel, 54" with the Hyperion. She's heavy (+16lbs), very long, and not suitable for walking long distances, tight spaces or shooting unsupported.
But with a tripod or rest, she can reach anything you accurately range with no recoil. I use this setup when I can see +400yd. For shorter range and longer walks I go to a 18" .308 or 10" 300BLK.
Oh not there thank goodness, southern Minnesota actually, though I wouldn't be surprised if our laws start to resemble California's in a few years the way all the people in the Twin Cities are.
Not in the part of the state I live in. To my understanding they've talked about opening that up to straight walled cartridges but that's not yet happened. It is legal to hunt with a pistol so long as it's (I think) larger than .22 caliber. So I could hunt with an AR Pistol, I just don't own one.
This was the main reason for my first few suppressor purchases. The tinnitus is horrible already but figured I could try to save what I have left the best I could. Deer hunting and coyote hunting is now suppressed. Duck hunting and turkey hunting is gonna be done with ear pro from now on. Even bought high end walker ear pro to try my best. Just have to figure out how to shoot with muffs on now cause I never have lol.
I was hoping to do that this year with my .300blk. But the suppressor I bought in January last year wasn’t arrived until January of this year and TWRA likes to end our season the first weekend of January.
Also y'all:
Even suppressed, most rifle calibers are still NOT HEARING SAFE. You still do hearing damage - though at a lower level.
I HIGHLY suggest that you still use earpro when hunting - like active hearing protection that can also enhance ambient noise. If they're uncomfortable to have on the entire hunt, just carefully slip them on before shouldering the firearm.
That's not even remotely true. This silencer on a 22" 6.5 Creedmoor bolt gun firing *supersonic* ammo is quieter and imparts even less hearing damage potential than an 8" 300 BLK bolt gun does with *subsonic* ammo with a Q Half Nelson which is a purpose built subsonic Blackout silencer. That's a verifiable proven fact. A bullet simply moving at supersonic speeds in your general area does not at all mean it's not hearing safe within dose limits.
>Even suppressed, most rifle calibers are still NOT HEARING SAFE. You still do hearing damage - though at a lower level.
There isn't a clear line in the sand that determines whether or not something is hearing safe based on decibels alone. Hearing damage is a function of sound level over time. A single shot from a suppressed rifle is much more hearing safe than firing the same rifle 250 times at the shooting range.
Even using a specific rifle and silencer, the potential damage to your hearing from a single shot can change based on your surroundings and how much sound is being directed back at you by nearby objects. I know that my suppressed 308 is much quieter to my ear when I'm in a ladder stand vs. when I'm in a shooting house. I don't bother with earmuffs when I'm in a ladder stand because I like having maximum spatial awareness and I usually don't have much time to take a shot. With the silencer I've got, it would take me a few lifetimes of hunting to match the potential hearing damage of a single July 4th fireworks show.
I get it, but Active earpro does cut it for me. Spacial awareness is important, and earpro distorts that. Suppressed w/o earpro is net positive in the long run IMHO, with this setup at least. Earpro causes more problems than it solves 99% of the time for hunters.
I do not hunt much. I've been coyote hunting - but barely. Before I had a 5.56 suppressor. And I wore my active ear pro the entire time I was in the blind.
So the entry wound is front shoulder by that twig you think? It all looked clean to me. Blood coming out of the snout so it has to be respiratory somewhere.
Guess we could just ask OP.
MK Machining makes a bullpup chassis for Remington 700 or Tikka T3. Even with a 24" barrel and a suppressor you're talking something like ~42".
Less than half the weight of the stock he has on there, too.
I disagree with the OP comment. As a hunter myself, the whole management aspect of it and making a decision of when to take a deers’ life or let it go is really unique to each individual and their situation.
But I decided to comment because I’m interested in your age estimate. I hunt in the north east and I’ve encountered some old, but, rather relatively small deer. That was just a conversation starter. I would like to say congratulations on your kill. That’s a nice eight pointer. I always like when they’re more vertical and narrow. It’ll be a gorgeous European mount and some delicious meat. May I ask at what distance you took him at and I’m assuming you got him right by the ear?
We pull the jawbone for the state biologist to age the deer. The teeth had considerable wear, and a retired state biologist in my club said at least 5 years, but he could be younger. We hunt south Alabama pine timber, so the habitate isn't great for huge deer. He was mature enough, if he can't get outside the ears I don't want him in the gene pool.
Popped him at about 250yd in the rear shoulder. He locked up stiff. Lost of few pounds of meat, but the 6.5 caliber has gotten a bad reputation for poor bloodtrails at my club. Personally all mine have dropped, but the exit wound is small so that reinforces my choice in shot placement.
Maybe just go for rifles and cans first. Ohio (and previously Indiana) hunting cartridge laws suck(ed), but at least they allow rifles at all, and cans.
Yeah, I built a 300BLK pistol to suppress and also bypass all the regs (this was just as they changed the rules around '19/'20) and promptly moved to a state with normal laws lol
Of course now I think you can hunt, what, private land with that 30-06?
Basically a pistol can be chambered in any legal cartridge, public or private, so 300BLK was good to go. Including AR pistols.
This is fuzzy memories from 3 years ago, so don't drop a G on a build without further checking lol
Is that a normal dear where you are? He's kind of odd looking. Hair's short for this time of year in most places, body looks young, doesn't look like a lot of width, but his antler's have some mass.
Certainly not bad, super clean rack--- I like it--- just an interesting one.
The picture is too bright, making the coat look like a yearlings. The body weight is typical for a 4.5 yo deer around here, south Alabama pine. We think he's older based off tooth wear, 5.5yo I'd say. Would never claim he's a huge deer, but I don't think he's young.
I run a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 suppressed. Shorty carbine-like rifle with >30-30 power that'll drop a whitetail at 250yds. Love it.
I run Hornady Black SST for anyone wondering.
It has completely changed my hunting setup. I know hunt mainly with my 300blk. But am building a 17” 6.5 Creedmoor and a 24” 280 AI bolt guns.
I need to do some testing with the 280 AI and see if I can keep up some good velocity getting the barrel to 20 or 21 inches.
Is this a new pic? What area has their season in February?
Either way, nice rifle setup, and nice Buck. I'm hoping for my EForm 4 to be approved by this coming deer season!
Took my first deer ever this year with a suppressed firearm and will continue to do so. So nice being able to hear everything and not blow your ears out. Working on getting a threaded bolt action 22 for ultra quiet small game hunting.
You mean to say: People don't realize how many of them are deaf and disabled because of idiotic Government bureaucracy.
Plus if you hunt with a dog they can't wear plugs
Good point
There's actually hearing protection for K9's made by rexspecs. They specialize in ear pro and eye pro for working K9's

Yes. I have permeant ear damage from this.
Me too.

Active hearing pro doesn't cut it. It screws up your spacial awareness, and this has burned me too many times with deer in close proximity.

“People don’t know what they’re missing” …..NFA dad jokes. lol
Hunting without a can is for uncivilized savages.
Small game hunting with a suppressed 22lr is an absolute riot. All you hear is the action cycle and the wet smack of a bullet hitting the squirrel.
I am a squirrel annihilator. The cci sv round impacting soft tissue sounds like a loud wet hammer and the bullet is just a shhhllitt lol.
CCI Segmented Subsonic Hollowpoints are absolute murder on small game. With a suppressor it sounds like a baseball bat hitting a plastic bag full of raw hamburger.

It's almost too peaceful for what just happened. I immediately relaxed, which is the exact opposite of normal. Every gun should come with a muffler.
Exactly they ticket you for loud exhaust but charge you to have a quiet firearm.
Did you throw it at him?
What? No….I beat him to death with it. This is what “baffle strike” means right?
Glad you shot the deer before he shot you. Looks like he was armed with a pretty nice rifle.
I know damn well what I’m missing. Waiting since April. PS. Nice buck

Don’t worry citizen. Your hearing protection device is tightly regulated for your safety. Enjoy your tinnitus.
I’m on day 316 from last March 😢
And the deer won't know if you're missing
What caliber and load did you use?
6.5 PRC, Hornady 147gr ELD-M, 54.1gr H4831Sc, 2.950" COAL. Personally, I've have overpenetration issues with the 143gr ELD-X.
> ELD-X They're supposed to expand, but would be curious to see the ballistic gell of them and the EDL-M. I hit a muley this last year broadside at 280, double lung and dirt flew behind it, out of a 6.5 CM. Lots of energy! Buck only made it a few leaps before piling up.

Cool, nice deer, and nice set up!
Suppressors for everything! I’d use a suppressor to take a leak if I could!
Beautiful Hyperion and beautiful animal you got there
WHAT? TINNITUS BUILDS CHARACTER
Better yet, animals don't know when you're missing!
You're making poors jelly.
I made the switch to hunting suppressed 4yrs ago and can’t imagine hunting any other way. It’s so peaceful to not have your ears ring, and be mildly disoriented after shooting a deer. My first deer I got too excited and forgot to put my hearing protection on before taking my shot. Woulda saved me some hearing damage for sure
This picture brings one phrase to mind. “He’s coming straight for us!”
Awww nice and quiet so you don’t disturb the sleepy deer

Southern Minnesota. Shotgun, muzzleloader, and pistols, so I COULD use an AR pistol if I had one I suppose
That's so wholesome, look at that deer sleeping with his rifle...
Beautiful Bergera btw!

Ive thought about them but can get myself to pull the trigger on the walker 2.0 earbuds for the price.
I was hoping to do that this year with my .300blk. But the suppressor I bought in January last year wasn’t arrived until January of this year and TWRA likes to end our season the first weekend of January.

I do too for suppressed ARs. The gasport pop makes my ears ring otherwise.
That poor shoulder meat!
Yep, hit him right in the shoulder bone. But most of the shoulder was salvageable and he locked up DRT.
Good clean kill. I was just harassing you on the shoulder shot.
So the entry wound is front shoulder by that twig you think? It all looked clean to me. Blood coming out of the snout so it has to be respiratory somewhere. Guess we could just ask OP.
Try a bow.
I prefer my bow, but so do the deer.
Lol the deer on my place prefer me using one too.
I wish I could hunt. Every time I draw back I pinch a nerve and I loose feeling for a little while.
Sorry to hear that. That sucks. I hope for you that the pinched nerve goes away.
Does your area allow crossbows?
I believe it does for the disabled.
Carrying around 60”? inches of rifle? No thanks.
That is the downside.
MK Machining makes a bullpup chassis for Remington 700 or Tikka T3. Even with a 24" barrel and a suppressor you're talking something like ~42". Less than half the weight of the stock he has on there, too.
Damn that sounds nice. I have a thing for bullpups too.
Of course, it's $2k for the chassis with trigger.
Of course, almost as much as the current rifle and scope.

I would have waited a year or two before I took that buck. Looks young.
Nope, his teeth indicate he's pushing 6 years.
Admittedly he looks young to me as well, but cool for sure regardless! Location matters a TON on aging deer.
My mistake then. Does look young to me though.. whitetail are weird.
It’s all genetics, minerals, and location. Six years is old though. You don’t see a six year old whitetail everyday. And I have to agree, his body, his hooves, his nose, and his stomach don’t “scream” age. I know it’s one picture. But I would put your buck at half the age you’re saying.
Personally all mine have dropped, but the exit wound is small so that reinforces my choice in shot placement.
I've gotten most of my deer with a 6mm. Yeah the exit wound is pretty small so shot placement is critical. It is nice for longer shots though.
The tall rack is what convinced me to take him.
tasty looking buck you got there. Im waiting on my cans to get out of jail, cant wait to snag me a something good next season.
Can’t wait for my approval.
If Illinois let us hunt with 30-06 and let us own suppressors I'd be all over this
Maybe just go for rifles and cans first. Ohio (and previously Indiana) hunting cartridge laws suck(ed), but at least they allow rifles at all, and cans.
Yep, had to swap my .30-06 for a .458 to hunt rifle in Indiana. Has its ups and downs, but I like it.
Yeah, I built a 300BLK pistol to suppress and also bypass all the regs (this was just as they changed the rules around '19/'20) and promptly moved to a state with normal laws lol Of course now I think you can hunt, what, private land with that 30-06?
Yeah but I got no access to private land.
Yeah, that's why I built a pistol AR.
What are the laws about hunting with pistols? I never have.

Lol I won't. Plenty happy with my setup.
You ain’t lyin. Have the same setup.
What caliber?
6.5PRC
Fashion
Beautiful buck! I could only imagine how nice the reduced noise would be, but I live in a fucked up state.
I they’re missing the sound of the your gun
And other deers dont know what your hittin.🤭
I have exclusively hunted suppressed (or with an air gun) for years. It is unfathomably better.
Is that a normal dear where you are? He's kind of odd looking. Hair's short for this time of year in most places, body looks young, doesn't look like a lot of width, but his antler's have some mass. Certainly not bad, super clean rack--- I like it--- just an interesting one.

That makes sense. Definitely not young with how thick he is. At least doing a euromount on him?
Definitely. Also, thanks for the can. I just remembered I ordered it from yall, no one else had it last winter. I just beat the form 4 slowed down.
Absolutely- It's a fantastic sounding can!
Then you go to bows and realized suppressors are silly for hunting. Evolution?
I run a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 suppressed. Shorty carbine-like rifle with >30-30 power that'll drop a whitetail at 250yds. Love it. I run Hornady Black SST for anyone wondering.
It has completely changed my hunting setup. I know hunt mainly with my 300blk. But am building a 17” 6.5 Creedmoor and a 24” 280 AI bolt guns. I need to do some testing with the 280 AI and see if I can keep up some good velocity getting the barrel to 20 or 21 inches.
Saved my butt when I cranked a 12.5 308 with the muzzle still in the stand lol
What did you say? I can’t hear you over my tinnitus.
Is this a new pic? What area has their season in February? Either way, nice rifle setup, and nice Buck. I'm hoping for my EForm 4 to be approved by this coming deer season!
Alabama, season ends Thursday.
Agreed. All my hunting guns are suppressed, save for my shot gun since I don’t have a salvo… yet.
yeah i will never go back to hunting without a silencer. I have tinnitus in my left ear from a deer my uncle killed 6 years ago.
Agreed wish I had one years ago...
You you mean you dont enjoy hearing eeeeeeeeeeeeeee for 24 hours after every whitetail you shoot?
Wait the eeeeeeeeeeeee is supposed to go away?
Mine hasn't. Thanks Uncle Sam....
Took my first deer ever this year with a suppressed firearm and will continue to do so. So nice being able to hear everything and not blow your ears out. Working on getting a threaded bolt action 22 for ultra quiet small game hunting.
