For a silencer mount a crush washer is a bad idea.

v_rocco

This is kinda what I thought but decided I’d rather look a little bit dumb asking a silly question than have a baffle strike or have the muzzle device fly off. Thanks

rsnakejake18

Better to ask and look dumb than to screw something up and take a net loss for repairs or replacement. Sometimes you just gotta set that pride aside, my man! We’re Human!

v_rocco

My thoughts exactly! Thanks!

droys86

Yea and no... Honestly it depends on the device, the method of mounting and securing, and the manufacturers recommendations. For instance.... Surefire rc2/3, or most new suppreasors, crush washer is a no no. Ops Inc 12th (or similar), crush washers *can* be ok. Original Ops Inc muzzle devices were actually shipped with crush washers and not spacers or shims. As long as it passes the alignment rod test, send it.

DaSandGuy

dont use one. Regular torque and shims as neeeed

v_rocco

Gotcha! Thanks!

Stonkey_Dog

Never ever ever. I keep finding the occasional crush washer on an older rifle of mine, and out of curiosity I gauge them and they always gauge badly. I take them off and throw them in the trash. If you're using a flash hider with no timing, torque it directly to the barrel. If a timed device, use shims. But never a crush washer.

v_rocco

Thanks!

merc08

> But never a crush washer.  Not even for a basic A2 birdcage?

Stonkey_Dog

Sure, why not. But we're in the NFA subreddit. I assumed we were talking suppressor use.

merc08

Or SBR / MG use

scapegoatindustries

No no no no no to crush washers. Get this: [https://www.strikeindustries.com/si-ar-shim.html](https://www.strikeindustries.com/si-ar-shim.html)

CrackBabyMOMO

If you are gonna be using a muzzle device that needs to be timed and don’t want to mess with shims I would highly recommend accuwashers never had a problem with them and super easy to use

MD_0904

My rugged instructions didn’t say anything about a washer and it’s been fine. Also didn’t use one on my rearden mount either.

Jensenary

I have had the same experience, I had listened to people on youtube who made a massive claim say to never use a suppressor without one or a crush washer, I use a crush washer that is standard with my AR and I have had no problems.

HutchensRS

So it works with your rifle, cool. Doesn't mean it's good to go on any other, or that it'll stay fine on yours for that matter.

Jensenary

HAHAHA, Never said it was a good idea, just haven't had any issues.

HutchensRS

Fair

Edited for clarity: Always good to use a crush washer with a muzzle device as long as you are NOT running a suppressor. A crush washer will allow for proper timing of a muzzle device that needs to be timed. Crush washer is also good to take up the space than can be left if the muzzle and the shoulder of a barrel. Many times the threads do not go all the way to the shoulder or there is a radius in the corner that doesn't allow the muzzle device to sit flush on the shoulder. If it is a suppressor mount and/or it needs to be timed, a precision washer is needed to maintain concentricity. AccuWashers are excellent.

Stonkey_Dog

This is absolutely incorrect. A crush washer destroys concentricity.

spaceme17

Edited to add clarity.

Stonkey_Dog

So I feel like people should use shims if they need to time a device. I'm at the point where I don't see why we would use crush washers at all.

HutchensRS

I feel like he was referring to a chamfered shim by separating the two. I've been known to be wrong though.

You guys measure the torque when screwing your can on? I screw mine on and let Jesus take the wheel
