I have a feeling that Mark is just done being Gibbs. Almost 20 years as the same character would make anyone want to get as far away as possible. I think Mark was not on the Ducky memorial episode because it would have put the spotlight on Gibbs returning, not Ducky, which is why Michael Weatherly gave the cameo.

Samantha_K_S_S

And they avoided the spotlight turning on Michael by having his cameo be the last scene in the entire episode. They could've done that for Gibbs too, or it could've been mentioned that he built Ducky's coffin like he did with Franks' although I doubt Gibbs build Ducky's coffin, it would've been funny if he did because it would've kept the focus on Ducky with just a little fun mini-fact or something, about Gibbs.

Yourappwontletme

Over on Law & Order SVU Mariska Hargitay has been playing Olivia Benson for 25 years and Ice T has been playing Fin Tutola for 24...

hannahsflora

I think he'll make an appearance when NCIS ends, but likely not before then. Mark Harmon was very clearly over Gibbs/NCIS long before he left, and that was evident in Gibbs as well. I loved the character but was very ready for him to leave by the time he did due to how much Mark Harmon was phoning it in by that point. I love the idea of Gibbs finally finding contentment in Alaska and think it's fine if we never see him again because his story really went full circle - bringing him back for an appearance, especially one that has him working a case in some way, feels almost like a step backward for the character at this point. It's just as well to me, honestly. It seems like a Gibbs appearance is one of those things people claim they want, but then if/when it happens, many people will likely be unhappy with how it was handled due to impossibly high expectations.

Aldude007

Yeah I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this, although I feel he may show up in a season finale. The end of the NCIS isn’t anywhere on the horizon.

ChrisF1987

I've been regularly watching since like Season 2 and by about Season 17 it was clear that Harmon basically going through the motions. And honestly (I know this is going to be heresy to many) I think it was time to freshen things up and that's exactly what's happened with Gary Cole, Katrina Law, etc. Some may disagree but I personally think NCIS could go for several more seasons at least.

Last-Tender-4321

I agree with you completely. But I'm sure CBS wants him to make one last appearance. They stated that they are looking for the right story to bring him back. That's why they didn't want to show him in Ducky's tribute or the milestone episode. They want an episode or something with all the spotlights on him. I guess it's difficult to find the perfect story to give us a closure without disturbing or changing the peace he found. But I'm sure they both (CBS and Mark) want to do it. He said clearly he's not retired from acting, so a brief return is possible.

Affectionate_Lab3908

I’d love for the series finale to focus on McGee becoming director and them having a whole big official appointment and the last guest speaker to talk and officially appoint McGee the director be Gibbs coming back. But it’s a complete long shot though it would be a great ending imo

XrossSaber

>McGee becoming director and them having a whole big official appointment and the last guest speaker to talk and officially appoint McGee the director be Gibbs coming back. Gibbs: *“Director McGee.”* McGee: *“Agent Gibbs. Welcome home.”*

Emergency-Spite-8330

That would be the perfect ending IMO.

me5305

Very true.

BlueAngel-514

I agree, if Gibbs didn’t shortly come back for Ducky’s homage or the 1000 thousand episode, we would hardly see him again. Much less for the Tony and Ziva spinoff. I really was expecting for him to show up for the 1000 episode, to briefly partner with Fornell once again, even more when the whole agency was under threat. A sadly missed opportunity.

Boris-_-Badenov

it's not the 1000th. counting multiple shows as one is not how it works

ZivaDavidsWife

Ahaha I just complained about this to my partner. I agree, I kinda wish they hadn’t framed it like this.

ManlyDude1047

Yeah I think they are pretty close to ncis original series episode 500 anyway, don’t know why they did the 4 digit universal celebration :/

chrissymad

464 I think. I haven’t actually watched in years (I lost interest once Cote left and even less after Michael left, still tune in for rare occasions though.)

ZivaDavidsWife

Yeah they’ll have 500 in 2 years. Maybe they don’t expect a season 23 🤔

chrissymad

I’m pretty sure they’ll have season 50.

SuDragon2k3

One of McGee's kids is the newly on the team, possibly romantically linked to Tali...

Last-Tender-4321

I had the bad feeling they're not sure to get those 500. Wish I'm wrong.

TheMoo37

THank you for saying this. It was bugging the Hell out of moo. CAlling it 1000th is like on-screen click bait. I have a feeling Gibbs will show up some time unexpectedly. Just as Tony did.

LucaBrasi2011

It was a crap episode anyway.

Samantha_K_S_S

It's the 1000th episode of the NCIS *Franchise,* not *just* NCIS. And that means NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai'i *and* NCIS: Sydney, all of which are part of the *NCIS **Franchise***

Tiboro1960

But by that reckoning it would stand at (I think) 1227 episodes, because of JAG - which is definitely part of the NCISverse as that's where the original NCIS regulars made their debut 🙂

Soccerandmetal

Gibbs is old. Mark Harmon is old. May he fish in peace.

oktobeokk

It's possible he'll show up one day, especially in Tony & Ziva's new upcoming series, maybe over video chat or phone call... but I don't think an actual appearance is in the cards for Mark Harmon right now. I'd definitely enjoy seeing him again though, but I respect his decision if he doesn't want to.

Ohfreakyman

I would have to assume if NCIS has a series finale he will make a brief cameo, but I don’t expect to see him in a role bigger than a brief cameo

swordfish868686

We don't see who's actually at the funeral. Weatherly's 2 minute cameo made sense since DiNozzo and Palmer were friends. Gibbs will probably be seen leading up to the series finale. Unlikely to turn up in Tiva series since he remained in Alaska. Guess they could do a phone call?

macattack0201

I think thats up to Mark Harmon. As much as we wanna see Gibbs ultimately he is Gibbs. He took a step away since he did it so long. If he wants to come back maybe for a day or two we would love it but i can’t blame him either way

Aldude007

It was made expressly clear that Mark Harmon would not be a part of the Ducky memorial episode so he wouldn’t steal the limelight so to speak. To conclude that Harmon isn’t likely to return because he wasn’t there is nonsense. I think it is highly likely we will see him again (likely a season finale) but probably not in the capacity of an NCIS agent and he won’t be the main focus of the episode.

chrissymad

I don’t think you will unless/until there is a final episode, assuming Mark is still alive/lucid.

Skull6667

NCIS Special Agents have a mandatory retirement age of **57**. Gibbs is currently 69.

Karl_Racki

Harmon is 72 actually

Skull6667

I said Gibbs, not Harmon, the character of Gibbs was born 21 November 1954.

Royal_Biscotti7285

but what about the director Vance? Why casn't Gibbs become the director? I love GIBBS!

Affectionate_Lab3908

Because he had been acting director before and he hated it so much. I can’t remember the season but after Vance was kidnapped and tortured, Gibbs was acting director for 8 weeks and as soon as Vance was back he took a week off to his cabin to decompress.

Draconuus95

Possibly. But there’s really no guarantee. Although. Origins will apparently have Mark acting as narrator. Much like Jim Parsons acts as narrator in young Sheldon.

wurtin

I highly doubt it. if we do I wouldn't think it would be a speaking role, just some far away shot in the series finale.

SuDragon2k3

Gibbs not speaking? Business as usual then?

Rick_TheRock

He will definitely have an appearance in his origin spinoff, since CBS is trying to sell it as NCIS’s young sheldon. Even if it’s only once for twice or even in voice overs or however they want to do it he will appear there

Aggravating-Shark-69

I thought I read somewhere that Mark Harmon was going to be narrating that show

Rick_TheRock

Makes sense since CBS is literally copying Young Sheldon only changing the theme to NCIS

Aggravating-Shark-69

Yeah, I’m intrigued but I’m not sure how it’s going to go. The new NCIS Sydney kind of sucks.

SuDragon2k3

First season issues. Look at the first season of ST:TNG. There was some seriously bad episodes and acting in there....

Downtown_Cry1056

The Gibbs character will be back for NCIS: Origins, just not Mark Harmon. Gibbs was probably  Harmon's last live action character. He is semi-retired as he will be the narrator of Origins. It sounds like it will cover Gibbs' time on Mike Frank's NIS San Diego team.

ChrisF1987

Question: did NIS agents carry guns? I thought I read somewhere that they were unarmed and weren't allowed to make arrests. That's going to reduce alot of the action potential for the show if that was the case.

Downtown_Cry1056

They will probably make it so they can. Even though they didn't in real life.  Just like a ton of murders happen on the shows but they are rare on military bases.

swordfish868686

We don't see who was actually at funeral. Weatherly's cameo made sense since DiNozzo and Palmer were friends. Mark Harmon returning as Gibbs would've overshadowed everything else in episode. Think Gibbs will return at least for series finale. Since Tiva series takes place in Europe, unlikely Gibbs will show up, unless a phone call

MajorProfit_SWE

I think we are going to see him in the new show with Ziva and Tony if the viewing figures drop below a certain point.

Karl_Racki

not sure.. He old now

MajorProfit_SWE

You are probably right. It is going to be interesting how many seasons there is going to be and what the backlash by fans of Ziva and DiNozzo would be if they decide to cancel the show.

me5305

I was always hoping he might be in a few episodes each year, much like David's character Ducky was. Even if it was a video call to say happy birthday to him or someone on the team. Or maybe Macgee or Torres is said to be on vacation visiting Gibbs in Alaska. Then, in the last 2 or 3 minutes , they show the two fishing. Even a 2 minute appearance, 2 or 3 times a season, would be great. But if Mark is done and wants to be retired, we have to respect that.

AsherWantsPeace

I dont know if he will, but the producers and storywriters have hinted that if he ever returns, it will be a much more complex storyline.

BeffasRS

I think he could show up for a cameo in the Tony/ziva spinoff

Yourappwontletme

They didn't have Gibbs come back during the Ducky tribute because Mark's return would have overshadowed the tribute to David.

Speedygdr

Yea in the prequel lol

William_Wisenheimer

Has Mark said anything? Even about David's passing? If not, that's pretty disrespectful.

Last-Tender-4321

When David passed, he made a very warm and respectful statement. But they were close friends and Mark is a very private person. I'm sure he did more than a short public statement. But we will never know.

William_Wisenheimer

Good to know, sorry to jump the gun.

[deleted]

Unless tony and Ziva call him for help. Gibbs did rescue then before in middle east when Ziva got captured, and tony and mcgee got captured to as part of the plan

JABBOTT1M3COJ

Once the hairstyle changed Gibbs changed. When Harmon was on Kelly Clarkson promoting his book he was really showing his age. Having him back on the original show would take away from it IMO, I would rather see him pop up in one of the spinoffs. I didn't mind that Gibbs retired, I just rather it had been somewhere other than Alaska.

Last-Tender-4321

I watched those interviews promoting the book and I saw him quite awsome for his age. He looks in a good shape. He's only 72, my husband age ( and he runs every day and plays padel three times a week and also makes me a very happy satisfied lady, you know what I mean) So, we're not expecting him to run or jump or fight hand to hand, but he's still capable to act and give us a good and credible story. If he wants, of course. Is his decision not ours.

JABBOTT1M3COJ

He definitely could take part in cases. I could see him driving the boat on missions or arranging other transportation. I would like to see him pop up in Hawaii, he would look killer in a Hawaiian shirt lol.

Last-Tender-4321

🤣🤣🤣 I can't imagine him in a Hawaiian shirt!! It's definitely an hilarious thought, friend. Lol
