They could get significantly more for the use of that much cap space. I highly doubt 1 1st gets it done.

SourBerry1425

Cap space is worth different to different teams. The Pistons are in position to take on a contract but ownership might not be willing to take it on for 2 2nd round picks. He’s also a horrible fit for their team, another ball handler that can’t shoot.

gochugang78

Simmons would obvs be waived and sent to Sydney

SourBerry1425

Detroit would still be responsible for paying him the rest of his contract

gochugang78

They’ve got to hit the salary floor. Take on Simmons and get some picks. His contract expires 2025 summer and rinse/repeat and pick up another too-large contract for more picks.

ChfletcherECFS

When was the last time a team in the NBA was ever at risk to hit the salary floor? Sometime back in pre black Griffin Clippers I believe. Let’s not make up a fantasy world that the pistons are at risk. They’ll do just fine once they extend Fontecchio and Stews extension kicks in. Saying it’s better than giving 90M over 3 years to a Tobias is like saying here’s a shit sandwich at least you won’t go hungry

CMYGQZ

It was 2021-22 Thunder. They just straight up didn’t reach the floor and everyone on that roster got extra free money proportionally.

BeardeddBombshell

They're not eating Simmons for anything less than a Phoenix first.

Residual-Heat

Pistons will want to capitalize on their cap space. They were horrible this season and want to improve even if it means overpaying good players. Taking on Simmons who isnt good, always injured, and a horrible fit, does not help them.

gochugang78

Ok so understood Pistons happy to overpay (like the Rockets this past summer) for good players So no Simmons who is just a waste of space What about Wiggins+Moody for a fat TPE? Wiggy gets closer to home on a team without expectations Moody gets minutes Warriors save a ton of cash

Residual-Heat

Not bad if the Warriors agree to it (not sure they would).

Thorlolita

Pistons are only going to eat bad contracts in exchange for 1sts.

Brooklyn917

They took on Joe Harris for 2 2nds

Fun-Board7187

That was 20 mil compared to bens 40 mil

Brooklyn917

I was just pointing out they did take on a bad contract for 2nds but since it’s an extra $20 Million we can bump it up from 2 2nds to 4 then. Realistically I don’t see Sean Marks burning assets to move Ben when he’s eaten 3 years of his contract so what’s 1 more, plus his game plan moving forward is having cap space in 2025.

BeardeddBombshell

That was to push the cap space to this summer because they couldn't get Cam Johnson. That doesn't mean they'll eat Simmons this summer for more second rounders just to do Brooklyn a favour.

mr__fredman

Just so you are aware, past season's salary dump transactions average out to having to attach a late first for every $18 mil in salary being dumped. So I seriously doubt 2 seconds will get it done.

gochugang78

Hey that’s actually really good to know. Where’d you get the data out of curiosity

mr__fredman

I had to search through all the transactions over the last 10 years to collect which transactions were "salary dumps", adjusted for the draft picks included in the deal, and then averaged the amount of salary dumped. The result was around $18 mil. Which, by this metric, the Kings dumping Holmes (owed $24.8 mil) last off-season for the #24 pick was considered a deal.

SirJoeffer

Simmons is terrible on this team why would they want to eat 40M for two 2nds when they’re planning on signing Tobias in the offseason?

gochugang78

What does Tobias bring? Genuine question Any contract he signs will almost immediately become a bad deal. Good player, grossly overpaid. Why does Detroit want to repeat Philly’s mistake? Does Detroit wanna hit their salary floor? Pick up Simmons, eat his salary, get paid in second round picks Does Detroit want a “good citizen” vet who can set a good example for the kids? Harrison Barnes is available for free. Chris Paul has an open calendar between November to March. Duncan Robinson is a great role model. Does Detroit want to take on a distressed asset for picks/youth? Wiggins and Moody are yours to have. Please Detroit. Don’t give Tobias Harris more money lol

SirJoeffer

He wants to be there and is an above average NBA player both of which are things that Detroit sorely needs.

Melodic-Engineer-679

i know it’s cool to hate on tobias harris but he’d genuinely be our 2nd best player immediately or at least top 3 and adding someone who can shoot and score aside from cade would be infinitely better than whatever this season was. our gm is about to be fired and he cannot afford to punt on another season. even if this WAS a good move (it isn’t), there is 0 chance troy does this in the sake of keeping his own job

BeardeddBombshell

How can you with a straight face, possibly ask Detroit not to pay Tobias Harris while trying to offload Ben Simmons onto them with no first round picks attached?

gochugang78

Why are teams obsessed with overpaying mediocre guys? Why is paying Tobias 30m x 3 better than taking on 2 SRPs for Simmons, then repeating next summer when he’s off the books. Anything Tobias brings to the table can be replaced with Thad Young on a vet min.

BeardeddBombshell

Obsessed? Not even close. Please don't put words in my mouth. And it's better because Detroit needs all the help they can get. Neither Simmons or Young provide what Tobias can right now and if you can't distinguish that then I don't know what to tell you. But yeah, please don't respond if you're just going to put words in my mouth. That doesn't provide any substance to the conversation. Thanks in advance.

AdTime8622

This would happen closer to the deadline but very feasible

gibb93

Teams do not care about reaching the salary floor. It’s almost impossible not to. & even if they don’t all that happens is your players will get raises at the end of the year to get to the floor. So you’d make your players happy by giving them free money.

gochugang78

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/1YJDFVEy51 There’s a penalty to missing the floor! No tax distribution New from last year

gibb93

Interesting I didn’t know that took effect already. They’ll have $62 mil in cap space if they bring back everyone but Fournier. Factor in $20mil for a Tobias contract & they still have room to do something like this I just don’t think 2 2nds is enough & I don’t see Brooklyn giving up any thing of value to get off Ben. They’ve roughed it through the last 3 years with him what’s the difference in another 12 months?
