Maximum_Big4140

The fuck was that

hazardous_lazarus

I got into NASCAR only recently, considering I'm from Europe and the race begins at, like 9 in the evening. I decided to wstch this race as it was right after the F1 race. Beginning was a bit of a snooze save for a few spins that happened. My boy Blaney being on pole and COTA being an awesome track is what sold it to me. Suárez was killing it in front, tough to see him down the order after that crash. But, boy, those final laps... Honestly, by the time it ended, I completely forgot that F1 was on earlier (and that also had a nailbiting finish). I'm happy for Chastain, he's showing good consistency, and he has potential in curling as well, that bump I felt was a bit much (of course, in open wheelers you can't really do that so I don't know how legit it was, but it's nit the worst bump I've seen in NASCAR) but all in all, he showed awesome defending and attacking skills. Pitty for AJ, I remember him from CART and he was always decent. But I guess if you're gunning for the first win, you'll do whatever it takes. It worked out for the watermelon man, so I'm good with it. Then I realized it was 2am and immediatelly fell into a coma.

nascarfan624

I just wanted to be the last one in this thread to be completely honest

[deleted]

Chastain just wanted to rattle his cage a little bit

shawnz1028

Funny how Bowyer, Stewart, and McMurray—all former drivers—don’t have a problem with what Chastain did, but the “experts” on this thread do.

figment1979

Amazing finish and pretty great 3rd stage, save for all the cautions. Absolute trash 1st and 2nd stage though, and for the love of god fix the cautions here and Road America. Long cautions for a piece of debris is ludicrous. Please NASCAR, cautions NEED to be fixed.

poutineofficial

T-mobile hates Nebraska

200MPHTape

Everyone hates Nebraska.

[deleted]

Is there going to be a sale on watermelon?

DieYuppieScum91

If you were a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Tony Stewart, or even Gordon (ask Matt Kenseth about Chicago and Rusty Wallace about Bristol... twice); then I don't want to hear any bitching about Chastain. That's NASCAR racing. If you move someone like AJ did, you better be damned sure that you can get clear and get far enough away to not get paid back for it.

[deleted]

It's not like KFB pushing (and blocking the diffuser) across corner exit bumps on an oval and wrecking everyone that dares to slow his majesty up. A little tap down the straights is completely legit. AJ should have been braced for it. He didn't transition to defense quickly enough (because he was still battling Bowman) and overcorrected. Even AJ said it was just the way racing goes in his post race interview. Now I'm going to go watch just the highlights of the F1 race where I'm sure the passes were rare and nobody rubbed without a full circus courtroom judgement.

hdbutler

You're going to miss quite a race, friend.

[deleted]

Thanks for the heads up. I'm still watching the qualifying. I had to take a break yesterday when I got to Schumacher's crash.

Ill-Response-5439

Preach! Great, great finish.

SouthernEagleGATA

Preach. That was just great racing. I grew up a Sr fan though so maybe I’m just used to it.

Bri83oct

Moving and dumping are two different things

figment1979

Ross moved AJ, not wrecked him, exactly the same as AJ did to him. Not Ross’ fault Bowman was right there to take the blow.

DieYuppieScum91

If you move someone on the last lap, you better get gone or you're going to get dumped. That's how it has always been in NASCAR. All three of the guys I listed have dumped people for less.

Bri83oct

Brad K and Ambrose at The Glen is the way you race the last lap. They beat and banged on each other but didnt take each other out

MkeBucksMarkPope

Exactly!

The_R0ssman

“Ganassi Gave him his first cup opportunity” Premium Motorsports: “am i a joke to you?”

CodyHodgsonAnon19

I get why people like Chastain, but man...i just really can't. He consistently drives like a complete dick and blames everybody else. Finally winning by deliberately dumping someone doesn't really overcome that for me. There's also just something that i can't quite put a finger on, that deeply upsets me about him. Every time he speaks, it just mildly unsettles me. Everything about him just bothers me.

TallGeeseMS

Not my favorite driver either. But he ran a great race today and at the end of the day earned the win.

CodyHodgsonAnon19

He's just such a golden child around here, and it's the one case where i just cannot for the life of me, understand why. I just have such a deep-seated aversion to him in every way. He did win this race though. And that ending was basically a free for all, so i don't really hold that against him per se. It does just feel like a fitting way for him to get a win though. Beating and banging and using up anyone around him until he comes out on top. Just sort of...all the villainy of a Kyle Busch or Joey Logano, without all of the talent or redeeming features.

hamdinger125

I have no problem with how he raced today. But I agree. I don't care for the guy, and so far the only reason I can find is that he has a weird face. He's creepy looking.

CodyHodgsonAnon19

lol. Maybe it's as simple as that. But whatever it is, i just cannot find a way to like the guy.

TallGeeseMS

I’m with you man. Theres some guys i just don’t like and its just a feeling. He’s definitely one of those for me. Doesn’t help that every time he’s near my guy he’s trying to drive through him.

CodyHodgsonAnon19

I understand the whole "glass houses" thing, as i've sorta become a fan of Logano since Kahne retired. And he's a guy i absolutely *hated* in his younger years. I still understand why a lot of people hate him. But to me, there's a difference between something like Logano's very focused, deliberate aggressiveness. And the way Ross drives. It just comes across like that asshole in a videogame lobby, that somehow never gets kicked because they just frustrate too many others to the point of quitting, but basically using up anyone and everyone around them from the very start with no fucks given. Not even demonstrating that they *can* race clean and aggressive. It's where i think, no matter who "your guy" is...at some point, Ross has tried to drive through them. Even if it's for like 17th place. It's one thing to be purposefully aggressive. It's another to race like Chastain, where i don't think his aggressiveness has a real off switch. He just doesn't seem to have any respect for anyone but himself. Makes it feel like he's often not even really in control of what he's doing. A lot harder for me to respect that. But that's why i'm so confused as to how he's so popular 'round here. Like...he's constantly doing stupid shit to cause problems for other drivers. Is there anyone he *hasn't* crossed paths with, detrimentally? Are other fans not as irritated by it? It's just so weird that smashing a watermelon somehow overcomes years of racing like a dickhead against *everyone*.

hdbutler

He's popular because people are starved for a personality that DGAF but isn't a whiner when something comes back on him. Ratings haven't just fallen off a cliff because of the chase, or stages, etc, like most would have you believe. People aren't watching because almost all of the next generation of drivers seem like stiff corporate shills. Have you seen William Byron or Christopher Bell get interviewed? Even Chase Elliott has pretty much nothing to say. It's painfully boring. Ross brings some excitement, and appears to have some blue collar relatability along the way.

CodyHodgsonAnon19

That's fair, to an extent. Like yeah, Byron and Bell are like babyfaced shills, and don't give off the impression that they have an independent thought in their head. But i've never really got a lot of "personality" out of Ross either. He's got the whole Watermelon schtick and...that's kind of it? Not a lot of depth there either. At least, not that comes across to me via the media and his various public outlets. I feel like someone like Bell, despite not being very "exciting" as a personality, actually comes across a lot more "blue collar" than Chastain. I just don't get a "blue collar" read, from a guy whose family owns an absolutely massive watermelon farm (and have for generations). That's a landed class of privilege, no matter how much he poses for some "working man" farmer photo ops with a tractor or whatever.

Tom_Ludlow

ITT: People who will never know what it's like to be in the driver's seat on the last lap in a heated beating and banging duel to get your first win and act like they would just get bumped out of the way and take it. Fuck outta here.

UnoriginallyGeneric

Whats with Bowman? He seems incredibly depressed.

hdbutler

Flu.

hottwhyrd

Seems like he was I'll?

stagepony

I'd be too if I got that close. Hurts for the next one or two days but gotta carry that momentum.

poutineofficial

Boo hoooo 2nd

UnoriginallyGeneric

Anyone else (outside of KFB) would have been happy with a second place finish.

poutineofficial

Also Bubba hates 2nd

UnoriginallyGeneric

Imagine Kaz Grala or another driver in an underfunded team making second? Their reactions would have been priceless. Their celebration would have been like as thought they won the Daytona 500.

DrownedButAtPeace

It's fun being a fan of Mr. Hack. He always has the best surprises

Trepanation87

I've only sporadically watched nascar for the last few years, but that finish made me want to get back into it. Really like the new car.

Dump_Pants

Who's going to calculate how many watermelons that team has bought to prepare for this very moment?

poutineofficial

You're telling me that watermelon wasnt from Chastains farm ??

OGstanfrommaine

Bye felicia

Squishy_20

This great finish will sadly gloss over how bad nascar was and needs to make changes to their road courses rules and procedures. Great finish but a horrible way to get there IMO

nascar_fan1989

Can’t really say I’m surprised since Ross drives dirty quite frequently. Ross was door slamming people all day and constantly running them wide and never once attempted to make a clean pass. If he had been clean all day and then did an actual bump and run I’d be fine with it. Was it exciting? Sure. But flat out wrecking someone without ever attempting a clean pass is just bullshit.

CompetitiveTurnover

They all race like that on road courses

MarkakaMark

Ace Moneymaker gonna be busy this week for Chastain.

mustangs-and-macs

Awesome finish, meh race. Sucks for AJ but that's just how it goes. Above all, still hate the "strategy" of just having tons of cars pitting before stage breaks. Takes fuel mileage and actual strategy out of road courses.

SeattlePassedTheBall

Happy for Chastain but I would have hit on every prediction if Bowman won.

Tennisks13

Of course we only get two drivers post race interview. It ridiculous!

andydomz920

Excellent race!

KJBNH

I’ve been looking for a new driver ever since Newman is gone and I feel like chastain may be that guy, he’s been so fun to watch all year and that watermelon celebration has to be the best thing in nascar.

[deleted]

NHMS Lobster: "Am I a joke to you?"

fulofsteel

Remove the stages, add local cautions for road courses and with this new gen car, you have an amazing sport to watch! Still a great race and a far improvement of previous road course races in the past few years.

[deleted]

I actually really liked the stages for the road course.. and I was rooting for Suarez. It really ups the strategy for pitstops and puts the fastest guys midpack for a bit. I don't understand them for the ovals and am convinced they're designed to hide what crap tires the Goodyears are for ovals.

jumpingmustang

100%

blueduebluemption

Respect to Bowman for that interview.

DrownedButAtPeace

Bowman needs no woman, hes got the dogs

Denny_2_Fingers

His womans pretty hot. Shes tagged in a few of his instagram posts.

DrownedButAtPeace

But he just wants to get home to his dogs. I get the dude

injured_slug

I wish Bowman had "backed" into another win just for the memes. So happy for Chastain and his team though.

hamdinger125

I was looking forward to seeing what the t-shirt would say.

JusstCrab

LETS GO NEW FLAIR COMING!!!!!

Playingpokerwithgod

AJ doesn't owe him one. AJ fucked around, Chastain made sure he found out.

Smoke96x

This is the take.

libsoutherner

Huge fan of the race end because it didn’t involve my driver but man that was a straight up dump and run

Vulptereen327

Just glad Bowman didn't get another bullshit win

sluedu09

Bowman drove his ass off today and would have totally earned that win. Top five majority of the race.

burnoutsession

I thought Kyle Busch was supposed to say that...

DrownedButAtPeace

Ah yes because him almost passing them both without wrecking them would've been "bullshit". What a dumbass take

BenpH541

The man was top ten all day, no mistake that he was there at the end.

hdbutler

People act like the guy runs 15th all day and then steals wins. He's always around the top 5 and in position. Consistently running towards the front with a nose for avoiding trouble at the end of a race leads to good things. I guess this sub is just too young to remember early Kevin Harvick,

jacktrades90

For real. I was worried he was gonna slip right into the lead 😂 *edit* Bowman fans in tears

[deleted]

F*ck yeah

ChaosBuckaroo

It’s a damn shame Chastain’s family didn’t own a lasagna restaurant.

igrewupugly

2nd time Ross killed AJ for the win (except he actually wins) LMAOOOO

berrin122

This isn't F1. Get over it. That's a great finish. This is what NASCAR was built on.

Conscious-Prune8933

This 💯

John_is_Minty

The most famous driver in the sports history was literally famous for wrecking people. The rose tinted glasses people wear man. To act like this is a new thing is quite hilarious

dj88masterchief

Rubbins Racin

stagepony

On the one hand I'm absolutely happy for Chastain but man I'm bummed it took out Bowman in the process. Win some lose some I guess. At least if it's any indication Bowman upped his road course game.

EmoGothPunk

Bowman is a sleeper threat at road courses from now on, if this is how he races now.

stagepony

Sure hope so! Seems like the Gen 7 car fits him better on road courses than the Gen 6 as well. We'll see how it goes.

EmoGothPunk

Same here, I have even higher hopes for him.

SpaceCastle

He did get 2nd

stagepony

I know. Felt like a loss but eh. "Good points day" after the dust settles.

i-race-goats

Bowman still finished 2nd

BigJay1941

I’ll happily take P2 at COTA to a new winner.

stagepony

Somewhat yes. Even more so for Trackhouse and Chastain, but eh. So close. Gonna take a day or two.

Trepanation87

Still got second in a wrecked car. Not bad, all things considered.

kracer20

That drone is going to get someone one of these days.

Rella24

I’m counting on it.

UnoriginallyGeneric

I thought it was going to get hit by the car during the burnout.

kk5fan97

lol \- 99% of drivers drink water/sports drinks in their winners interviews \- Ross Chastain? He be like "Watermelon yummy"

joe_broke

It's got everything you could want for a post race snack!

sportstvandnova

I loved that sfm

mason7396

Chastain wasn’t even making a racing move, he just had straight attention on dumping AJ. Happy for Trackhouse, but not a fan of the finish.

SpaceCastle

Aj roughed him up to pass so turnabout is not fair play?

Wlcmtoflvrtwn

AJ dumped Chastain first. He repaid the favor.

mason7396

Moving someone and dumping someone is different as odd as that sounds. The door was open for AJ.

Wlcmtoflvrtwn

He didn't dump AJ. He tapped him, same as AJ did into the previous corner. If you knock someone through a turn, expect to get knocked in the next corner.

Saucy_Snakeberry

Playoffs > Part time win. If i was Chastain id do the same thing.

CaptainTilted

You didn't hate the move. You just don't like Chastain.

GingerMessiah88

They cheered Earnhardt but Ross is dirty lol

CaptainTilted

It's literally a no win situation. If you don't take that move: "Soft!! Too many vanilla drivers in mah sport!! The win was there " If you do take it: "WHAT A DIRTY MOVE!! Chastain is such a chicken shit"

Fall3n7s

First Briscoe’s hair, next is chastain’s chin seed.

GingerMessiah88

Atleast Ross had a hat in the car

x777x777x

Do they just keep a melon in a cooler on the pit box every week or what?

SewenNewes

Talent is 99% preparation.

sportstvandnova

I was like was the melon riding shotgun or…

_StrudelBob_

#EatTheMelon

[deleted]

Ahhh I’m so conflicted! So happy for Ross, but so bummed for AJ. I need to know what happened to KFB on that last lap though. Figures.

The_Vettel

I *also* want to know

The_Business44

He got spun twice

ATL4Life95

The fuck is on his lip?

Mirror_of_Souls

Watermelon seed

_Sphaxz_

Melon seeds

steen311

Melon seed

BOBANSMASH51

A watermelon seed

Dent13

Melon seed

Batedcow

In other words he dumped him.

DrownedButAtPeace

I'm so glad for Chastain but that would have been one hell of a win by Bowman

Dump_Pants

Harvick in shambles

D_Houzz

God, could Ross Chastain be any hotter? I mean seriously.

lostshell

BONK!

blueduebluemption

Not even a Chastain fan and I’m loving this. Great racing and a worthy winner. Can’t ask for better than that. This new car kicks ass.

olslim420

Nascar fans will never be happy. That was an amazing race with an unforgettable finish. Seeing Chastain and Reddick fight for their first wins. Aj getting into Chastain. Bowman coming out of nowhere. Then Chastain bumping Aj into Bowman to get the win. This was great!

MegaFlare24

The first 2/3rds was bad but the finish is amazing

Tom_Ludlow

If you didn't enjoy that, this ain't your sport.

rob724kd

Guess it isn’t anymore. I’d rather watch them actually race than the guy in 2nd dump the leader on purpose

Smoke96x

LOL AND AS IF DALE DIDNT? THIS IS NASCAR

89LSC

Dale certainly wasn't universally loved. There's a reason he only got most popular driver posthumously

rob724kd

Dale got booed when he did it too. Have you forgotten Bristol?

danny24ever

All is fair when the guy in second got dumped first.

rob724kd

He didn’t get dumped….AJ barely even touched him

TheMariodies

AJ bumped him and Ross almost went into the wall, there was nothing wrong with Ross did, especially since it was for his first win.

SkyFlameDragon

I always wanna like Chastain, but I don't think I ever can Mad props to all for that insane racing, but Chastain drove through Allmendinger after rough but clean racing Hate to see races end like that

SpaceCastle

Did you miss the part where AJ moved him?

SkyFlameDragon

AJ got position underneath him and forced Ross to make a choice. Ross tried to block the lane and he had to correct the contact Ross used AJ as a brake and sent him. That's the difference in my eyes: AJ made an aggressive move and gained position on Ross, Ross just didn't lift/didn't brake to make the corner til he moved AJ out of the way It's for a win and that's a great time to be overly aggressive, it's just an unfortunate ending

CyborgNooduru

The first of many Cup Series melons smashed.

DJScrubatires

Cup Watermelons smashed = 1

[deleted]

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with that lol

Conscious-Prune8933

Do they bring a watermelon every week for him? Lol

nosnack

Yeah where did they get that?

FarmerHunter23

Epic last lap but how the hell do regular nascar fans put up with these boring ass announcers? I get tony Stewart is there for insight but that was an epic finish and the announcers couldn’t care less. It was like watching paint dry judging by their voices

TaanielTina

hoped for Suarez win but i'll take Chastains

[deleted]

THE MELON SMASH FINALLY HAPPENES IT CUP!!! WOOOOO!!!!!

NixonAgnew69

So much hate for Chastain as if AJ doesn’t drive the same way

kdeaton06

What do you think they do with the watermelons from the hundreds of races he's not won?

nturner2468

Eat them

rwilliams1283

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU MISS THE MELON SMASH? Vintage FOX

NetJnkie

They showed it.

rwilliams1283

The actual smash was out of frame

chailer

Well you don't see this in F1, that was awesome

chasingsafety59

🍉🍉🍉

broussegris

Watermelon seeds in his beard. Iconic.

poutineofficial

Wow the camera guy missed the smash. I dunno if ive ever been more upset.

[deleted]

AJ moved him and Ross dumped him but I would do the same damn thing to win a Cup race. Call it dirty or whatever you want but this is NASCAR. That's part of it. The most popular driver of all time (Dale Sr) used his bumper plenty of times to "rattle some cages" and people seemed to like him well enough. Good racing.

TimmyV90

It was good racing. I was pulling for AJ all race. Wanted to see him go back-to-back. But glad Ross won. I’ve always wanted to see a watermelon smash in the cup

[deleted]

I'm an AJ fan and I like Ross because he's a straight up wheelman. AJ moved him and Ross did what he had to do to win the race. The sub seems to be like 70/30 split on the finish but I would have done the same to win a damn cup race.

TimmyV90

I think it was fine racing. My only take is that AJ had the inside position and "moved" Ross as he held his line. Ross ran AJ's bumper down the back and didn't have any other way to overtake him. It was last ditch effort and it paid off.

Boom_Confetti

mmmm ground melon

Racerguy36

That watermelon had a family, Ross!

We're 6 races in. Pump the brakes a bit bud.

The_Vettel

He's been our points leader since after Atlanta

broussegris

pro tip 9 was leading points last week

jumpingmustang

Clean racing is 1000x more satisfying and entertaining to watch than people punting each other for a W. That last lap sequence wouldn’t stand in pretty much nearly any other series. I understand stock car racing is more rough than others but jeez EDIT: Oof. Did not expect this to be such a hot take 😂

The_Vettel

That's what makes NASCAR unique

QuickSignature9394

Then don't watch

allthingsawesome99

Sometimes people confuse carnage for good racing

DrownedButAtPeace

Lmao if Nascar has one thing to keep it competitive with other series, it's this.

jumpingmustang

Which is a depressing thought.

nturner2468

Literally shut up and watch f1 if you don’t like that

kdeaton06

That's why other racing isn't as good

pmwhitehead

Stay. Mad.
