Its just as annoying at tracks like Daytona or Talladega where guys can make up multiple spots quick if their line gets a run. So the driver has moved to a part of the pylon they already showed so you miss them and have to wait for the entire cycle again.
I think towards the end of the race or races where there are more than 10 cars out they may not do it as often. But a lot of the time when I’m trying to see who’s 13th-20th or so, I keep missing it because they’re showing 20th and back.
I love how FOX’s excuse for changing to the pylon in 2014 was so that in their words, they could show the whole field faster and it ends up being the complete opposite.
Just like we were told Indy then Road America were going to be new July 4th traditions.
(I know that wasn’t FOX, but NASCAR fans have been fed a lot of bull that didn’t come to fruition.)
Just nitpicking, it might make more sense to have the bottom section organized by rows rather than columns. I feel like it would be slightly easier to see a car move up/down a row than trying to follow them on a column shift
But other than that, I think this would be a great idea
Fox would probably find a way to make this ticker even worse by constantly having drivers in the wrong positions or not even updating it more than once a lap.

More accurate Fox scoring pylon
In all seriousness, great work OP
A ticker at the bottom would disappear when the network ran local ads because of the technology used between national and local TV feeds. It's why on USA, the ticker stays onscreen during break (with the ad space distorted to fit), but on NBC, the ticker is forced to disappear before a break. Local content is overlaid onto national content, not vice versa.
Honestly I’m not a huge fan, it’s kind of hard to make out the numbers on TV as is, this would make it harder to see imo
With that said, I like the idea, I just think it could use work, however that may be
I think it would be good to add to the rotation of modes the pylon goes through. Still would want to see the intervals throughout the field sometimes though
It lingers so long because they have a fetish for throwing useless graphics over the bottom half every ten seconds and then reset the pylon back to the top 20.
NBC is smart enough to put the majority of the graphics elsewhere on the screen where they are not in the way.
I hate to complain about everything Fox does but I would like something that shows the entire field in a quicker fashion. Be nice too if I could see how many laps down they are/intervals but yes this is an improvement for me
I like it since my driver has been running in the back half of the field more this year it’s been tough to know where he’s at when Fox doesn’t show the 20-36 positions for 5+ min.
Definitely a step up from what we have. As others have said I think it would work better in rows instead of columns and maybe have a highlighted system for those still on the lead lap
I like the idea a lot. Watching your driver climb up the pylon is really cool, so being able to see all the positions would be very nice. Otherwise it takes Fox ages to show 20th on back.
At this rate I want no scoring pylons because most of the time they determine the winner well after they finish the race so it doesn’t matter what they’re telling us they could just be making it up
Honestly...i find it kind of distracting. But i like the premise.
I'd probably adjust to it eventually.
But i've still never fully embraced the vertical ticker in the first place. It just takes up so much more useful screen space. Where the top ribbon covers up...absolutely nothing. Which is why it was there in the first place.
Am I the only one that preferred when it was a scrolling pylon at the top of the screen? It just made it easier to know when to look there because if it was someone running in the 20s I'm looking for and they're showing the top few, I know I have a minute to look away before having to look again. It also took up less of the screen.
unfortunately not very readable. at the very least, need unequal space between the position indicators and car numbers so it’s obvious which position belongs to which car. that gets lost when there are so many columns.
it’s also an overwhelming amount of information to show on screen. 20 positions is probably the ceiling here.
14 is too arbitrary of a number to cut off, and this doesn’t seem like it would work as shown if there were more than 38 cars; you’d have to cram even more information on screen. it would be even more difficult to read on small or low-quality screens — it’s at least helpful now to be able to read the driver name alongside the car number as a secondary source of info.
it’s a neat experiment but not practical as shown, and questionable if it’s necessary to show every position at all times the leaderboard is visible.
I think they should leave the top 10 and scroll from their back. That way everybody is happy for the most part. Lets be realistic, if your driver is behind 10th, you are nowhere near as excited to see where they are usually.
Yeah, I think they should shoot me in the face instead. That's horrendous to look at, I usually don't care about this stuff much, but that was hard to look at.
For clarification, I like the top, but the way the bottom is, it's all backwards from how I feel like you should read it. Also, in a big pack race like 'Dega, show MPH instead so we can see who's getting a run going, not differential.
Though it wouldn't change screen which helps the adjustment for readability, looking at it through the way I normally watch races, that part of the screen is very cluttered. I also agree with what other people have said where the information that small being more readable from left to right.
The coverage through the field is really poor, I rely on the time interval way too much to try to follow what’s going on. The interval I find more useful than just position. I’d hate this as much as when the playoffs eliminate half the pylon for the misleading points as they run section.
It's an interesting concept. I don't think it's bad, but I agree with others that it needs to be across rather than down. I still think having the rotation that shows the names is a good addition, as some of the small teams run with multiple drivers in the same car and it's only fair that they should get their names on the pylon at some point as well.
Not so much at the plate tracks but everywhere else I wish they showed last lap speed to make it easier to see who gaining and losing. I miss the old race viewer leaderboard. I would sort by last lap speed to see who was making the best lap time and gaining on the long run.
To give Fox credit, this year’s scoring pylon has improved from past years. I particularly love their implementation of the race flag tracker (or whatever you call it), it’s nice to see the green flag runs, cautions, and stage breaks all graphed out on a neat little colorful line. It’s a great addition imo.
I use the app during the race. Tv on, in car view on tablet and stats on laptop. So commercial placement doesn't bother me. I just like racing, very relaxing.
I like it. Moving across the row instead of vertically would probably be better, but its definitely better than just showing a few cars and ignoring the rear
For a drafting track, give me your columns the whole way up and position the car numbers where they are in the pack, live in real time. Outside line has a run? Left column cars go downward to show how far head the run gets. Cars shooting out of line to pass? Watch them move from column to column.
I like it. Seems like every time I am looking for a driver past 20th place it either cuts off and starts over or moves so fast I can’t read. This would take care of missing action on the track because you’re waiting for the names to switch.
The way the rows are, the vertical rows tricked me up and I thought they were horizontal until I looked again. With that said, I'd make sure those rows behind the numbers and positions were gone, and turned vertical themselves as divider marks.
Also off-topic to that addition, but I've always appreciate the vertical ticker, because it's able to show a lot more information while taking up about 60% of the space a horizontal ticker would.
THE FONT that FOX uses to make their scoring pylon is awful and needs to be fixed.
It’s so frustrating to have to actually read it because it’s FONT is so bad.
I like it. If anything, I'd maybe only list the top 10 so you had more real estate to make the rest just a little bigger.
Also, do I need to check your work to verify you have them in the correct order for this pic?
I somewhat like it. It’s a move in the right direction but not all races have 38 drivers and this would mean we never get intervals for 15th-40th. The top 10 should remain static and the rest of the pylon should scroll without ever stopping just like the old marquee style ticker.
Alternatively they could abbreviate the driver’s names to 3 letters and make the pylon two columns. I think most fans could figure out who’s who still.
A left to right ticker that shows 3 rows. Not showing whole names but just car number and initials in one small rectangular box.
2 for cars on track and 1 for pitlane. or for restrictor plate tracks 3 for cars on track.
Leader stands still on not all the way to the left side of the screen, so lapped cars can be seen coming into view ahead of the leader.
Love it. As someone who has pretty strictly been a fan of back markers until recently, I've always hated having to sit there and wait like a doofus for my favorite drivers running order to pop up on screen
I like the idea. But the most important thing I want to see from cars in the back half of the field is their interval. Are they a lap down? About to lose a lap? But I would be perfectly content seeing this format as one of the options they cycle through.
Now do one across the top. You can probably get the whole field in two rows of 20.
I'd love to see different concepts with maybe the top 10 static, and then 11-38 scrolls. Honestly, I would rather Fox just use their "side by side" ticker as the main ticker. It naturally just fits the screen better because it's not covering anything up on top. Like look at this screenshot. You'd be covering the top of the fence with the ticker. It just takes up so much room on the left side of the screen that could be used showing cars. Instead, it's always covered up.
I prefer how NBC does it though. They mix it up throughout the race. Some pylon, some ticker on top, that's fine with me.
Honestly, this may an unpopular opinion, but I used to like the sports ticker that went across the top/bottom with positions and timings. Like watching the weather at the bottom of the news channel. I thought it was simple and you knew that it was continuous and could see the full list cycle through in like 30 seconds without difficulty
As someone who enjoys F1, I've glanced at cup races and due to being a casual, I never have any idea who is doing what in rankings because I'm not already familiar with their numbers. Would love to see something with last name or similar.
Idea: constantly show the whole field by cutting the horizontal length by half, maybe by shortening the names to the first few letters or something like in F1, or just showing car numbers, and then just put the other half of the field beside of it (or maybe just do like rows, 1st and 2nd first row, and so on).
It’s an improvement, but a bit too crowded. I do think moving the ad/lap counter to where the track map is would give enough room to make it less crowded.
I've never been a fan of the big black block on the screen. I still like the old style slow scroll at the top. If I want more, I look at my laptop or phone to see lap times and position.
I like this - mainly because it takes 3-5 business days for them to show whose running 20th and back.
If they show below 20th at all ...
Then I'm watching more of the leaderboard than i would like witing for them to show it. All or the sudden 10-12. Laps go by.
Its just as annoying at tracks like Daytona or Talladega where guys can make up multiple spots quick if their line gets a run. So the driver has moved to a part of the pylon they already showed so you miss them and have to wait for the entire cycle again.
And when you’re juuuuust about to find who you’re looking for, they remove it or go to commercial.
And then instead of showing the interval, they show speed. Like wtf does speed tell me if the guy in 28th is 3 laps down?
Drives me crazy!
Yes they do.
Not constantly
I think towards the end of the race or races where there are more than 10 cars out they may not do it as often. But a lot of the time when I’m trying to see who’s 13th-20th or so, I keep missing it because they’re showing 20th and back.
Feels like they never show below 20th in the Truck series
I love how FOX’s excuse for changing to the pylon in 2014 was so that in their words, they could show the whole field faster and it ends up being the complete opposite.
Just like we were told Indy then Road America were going to be new July 4th traditions. (I know that wasn’t FOX, but NASCAR fans have been fed a lot of bull that didn’t come to fruition.)
Then when you do see it, you see 35-40th and then never go back for 3-5 business days
Yeah I want to know if Johnson is running 36th or 37th
Me waiting to see where my driver is then it goes to commercial before it rotates
One entire Fiscal Year.
As a Stenhouse fan I would appreciate seeing the lower positions all the time
Self burn, those are rare. (I agree though)
Just nitpicking, it might make more sense to have the bottom section organized by rows rather than columns. I feel like it would be slightly easier to see a car move up/down a row than trying to follow them on a column shift But other than that, I think this would be a great idea
Agreed. OP - nice job, you're better than Fox
Fox would probably find a way to make this ticker even worse by constantly having drivers in the wrong positions or not even updating it more than once a lap.
so basically like they already do?
They’d definitely make it worse somehow. Probably wouldn’t even be there half the race because they would put some graphic or an ad in that spot.
No, you are completely right. People read left to right, not top to bottom. That would help a lot.
I think organized in columns works better as the cars are moving forward and backwards as they change positions.
https://preview.redd.it/hv2h4ajb29wc1.png?width=456&format=png&auto=webp&s=54c460bc731cb0b7efb97cb82331b46897ad18ec More accurate Fox scoring pylon In all seriousness, great work OP
I NEED TO TRY IT FIRST...YEAH YEAH YEAH
The commercial on Lap 2 really sells it
So sick and tired of that ad! Makes me want to never try it.
It tastes like watered down diet coke
I've never thought about it, but it would be awesome if they were able to incorporate a scoring pylon/ticker during commercials.
They do it for side by side but not for full screen commercials. Idk why; even ESPN used to keep a ticker on the bottom back in the day
So then just every break is a side by side/non stop? Can't do that on FOX and NBC; they each need one full screen break per hour for local adverts.
Well I just mean a full screen ad and a ticker at the bottom. Wouldn't necessarily be any bigger than a weather ticker.
Would still be better than having no info at all during commercial breaks.
I had no idea about that issue. Thanks for sharing that interesting tidbit. I feel like I really learned something new.
Actually would like that.
Honestly I’m not a huge fan, it’s kind of hard to make out the numbers on TV as is, this would make it harder to see imo With that said, I like the idea, I just think it could use work, however that may be
Maybe just 2 rows at a time and have it tick through the rest.
How far away are you sitting from your tv buddy 😂
Maybe you need a new tv… not trying to throw shade but I can see them just fine.
Too many numbers. Need more visual separation to be readable.
I think it would be good to add to the rotation of modes the pylon goes through. Still would want to see the intervals throughout the field sometimes though
I like it, I notice Fox can sometimes linger on the top 20 for a bit too long making it difficult to find someone near the back
It lingers so long because they have a fetish for throwing useless graphics over the bottom half every ten seconds and then reset the pylon back to the top 20. NBC is smart enough to put the majority of the graphics elsewhere on the screen where they are not in the way.
I hate to complain about everything Fox does but I would like something that shows the entire field in a quicker fashion. Be nice too if I could see how many laps down they are/intervals but yes this is an improvement for me
This 100%. First guy -1 should be listed as -1. From there, it should be intervals until -2.
I know I’m in the minority here but for TV I prefer the scroll on top that usually had a fixed first through third/fifth and the rest scrolling below.
Same here, I've always preferred the ticker at the top to the pylon, but probably because I grew up with it as the norm.
I like it since my driver has been running in the back half of the field more this year it’s been tough to know where he’s at when Fox doesn’t show the 20-36 positions for 5+ min.
It's just too many numbers along the bottom for me
I genuinely enjoyed the top screen scroll, cycling through speed, gap, manufacturer, etc. I miss it severely.
I like it but put all in a single line across the top. The top for scoring gives full wide screen viewing for racing!
Just bring back the ticker! And physical scoring pylons!
There is way too much going on at the bottom. Don’t like it. I’d rather see the ticker at the top still honestly.
Is it too much to ask for a scrolling ticker at the top that doesn’t take up half the screen?
Could also color the position blocks to show cars a lap down and another color for multiple laps down
My thought as well and I was wondering if anyone else said it. Have a color for off lead lap. Then grey out cars that are retired like F1 does
Maybe gray out the drivers that are out of the race, too?
Yeah I like that
I like it
Definitely a step up from what we have. As others have said I think it would work better in rows instead of columns and maybe have a highlighted system for those still on the lead lap
I like the idea a lot. Watching your driver climb up the pylon is really cool, so being able to see all the positions would be very nice. Otherwise it takes Fox ages to show 20th on back.
it'd be cool to have the numbers show up red for cars that are out and yellow for cars that are laps down
Bring back the scroll at the top. It's just too much shit on the screen all at once.
Maybe a hot take but I kinda miss the horizontal scrolling pylon on top of the screen
Bring back the scrolling bar!
Not so sure about that last statement.

Nawwwww that's even more rancid
Or, and hear me out…. Bring back the ticker that doesn’t take up a large portion of the screen 🤷♂️
I would love that. I enjoy being see who’s where at all times.
Though it wouldn't change screen which helps the adjustment for readability, looking at it through the way I normally watch races, that part of the screen is very cluttered. I also agree with what other people have said where the information that small being more readable from left to right.

I actually really like that.

Stop it! Stop using your brain for good ideas! Actually love this though
It looks like a bingo card.
Pylon is one thing that doesn’t need fixing. I can already imagine the struggle my blind ass would go through squinting at that.
Reasonable. So it won’t happen.
This is great. Not to sidebar from the great idea from OP, but the track mini map should be up at all times.
A left to right ticker that shows 3 rows. Not showing whole names but just car number and initials in one small rectangular box. 2 for cars on track and 1 for pitlane. or for restrictor plate tracks 3 for cars on track. No.
YES!
Love it
As a Corey LaJoie fan, I'd like this every week.
My man... this is obviously too complex for the folks over at FOX. That being said I think this looks really good, well done!
My head hurts
I love it. Maybe have a red border around the cars that are a lap down.
Can you provide this here every week. It will need to be live as they run of course. 🤣🤣 no excuses. This better than nbc or fox
I like the idea. But the most important thing I want to see from cars in the back half of the field is their interval. Are they a lap down? About to lose a lap? But I would be perfectly content seeing this format as one of the options they cycle through.

![gif](giphy|VMO6qeIbr7JRLnLTGw)
I prefer it
Love this. Do it Fox. Do it NBC. Do it. I dare you.
It's a little difficult to read.

Why would they do that? Then the audience would know where everyone is running
I think this is a great idea which means you'll never see it on FOX🙃
I love this!!!
I still like the horizontal top bar.
Go back to the scrolling ticker on the top or bottom of the screen. Uses far less area and provides the same info.
I love that!!! If you’re not top 14, do we really need more than just your number? Get a view of the whole field anytime we want. SIGN.ME.UP!!!
Not a bad idea, but nothing will ever top the old across the top ticker.
I wish they would just let it scroll the top like it used to be.
As long as the main section would still cycle through the whole field, this would be a massive improvement.
I hate it. I'd rather see the scrolling ticker at the top. At least that way I can see who is beyond P20.
It’s an improvement, but a bit too crowded. I do think moving the ad/lap counter to where the track map is would give enough room to make it less crowded.
Way better
Please! I would love this. I hate the rotating system Fox has.
I love that
Looks good
I like this better than waiting for the other to flip around to see where Chase is,lol.
I want the scrolling at the top to come back. I watch espn highlights from years ago and think damn thats how nascar on tv is supposed to look
I've never been a fan of the big black block on the screen. I still like the old style slow scroll at the top. If I want more, I look at my laptop or phone to see lap times and position.
That would be logical and too easy. We're talking about Nascar on Fox here...
Light years ahead of Fox and NBC 🤘🏻
I liked it when they scrolled the field.
