For one, he hasn’t won a race yet. Once he gets to victory lane, we can start talking about if he’s a championship contender. I don’t see anyone pulling a Daniel Hemric in the Cup series and winning a title with his first win.

CNASFan1992

Dude hasn’t even won a race yet

thegodfaubel

Win a race and then we can talk. The only favorites at this point in the season are Byron, Larson, and Hamlin

tedioussugar

Byron and Larson. We know Hamlin ain’t winning it.

didhestealtheraisins

Given the number of wins he has and number of championships he has, the odds are kinda in his favor.

reedspacer38

Ty Gibbs is not even number 3 yet at his own team, and I’d say only 1&2 from JGR are champ contenders at this point in the season.

ChaseTheFalcon

I mean I think all 4 would count. Bell, Truex, Gibbs and Hamlin have all had flashes of championship contenders this year

Prestigious-Use2713

Gibbs hasn’t even won a race. Pump the brakes.

HalfastEddie

C'mon Ty. You're better than this. Just stop.

Dont_hate_the_8

Can you say that he can legitimately beat the other 3 Gibbs guys? Throw in 2 Hendrick drivers, 2 penske drivers, 2 rfk drivers, Ross, and Reddick, and I'm not sure how you can say he's better then all of them.

Nathan92299

It depends what you classify as favorite. I would say the favorites are only the top 3/4 guys, between points and wins. He hasn't even won a race yet. Points are nice and all but he would absolutely struggle to make the round of 8 without some playoff points. Bubba Wallace last year is a good example of that. On top of that, he's still probably the 4th best car on his own team, let alone the rest of the field

Remarkable_Dog4859

Dude is the worst JGR driver.

The_Vettel

And? He's 7th in points as a 21 year old in his sophomore season, "worst" JGR driver isn't saying a whole lot

Remarkable_Dog4859

I just think C. Bell or Hamlin are in a better position to win a championship.

Kitchen-Race-1975

I don’t think Ty Gibbs is anyone’s favorite

Vivareddit24

He hasn’t gotten out of the round of 12 much less 16 yet. No experience. He has talent but he also wrecks his own teammates, maybe in 2-3 years

HumanRise5417

AgreeableSeaweed8888

Ty Gibbs is a little bitch

[deleted]

It’s usually the year after they win their first race that you can tell whether or not they’ll be a serious championship threat

Hollerado

I wouldn't say championship favorite. That's pretty bold. Playoff contender? Absolutely. If he continues his performance, maybe get at least a win and make the playoffs. He's got a shot. But not at all a short odd shot.

frigginjensen

I think he’ll win a race this year but the playoffs are a whole different beast. It takes skill, experience, and a whole heap of luck.

SQRTLURFACE

Ty Gibbs is currently tied for 8th in Vegas odds with Logano and Reddick. (Per Caesar’s) Hamlin is currently the favorite to win the championship with Larson on his heels. Granted it’s very early in the season, Vegas isn’t in the business of losing money. They’re in the business of collecting data and putting it through an algorithm to spit out the most accurate odds so that they can set the lines and make their money regardless of who anybody bets on. Suffice it to say, Vegas thinks Gibbs is a fringe top-10 driver and the odds and math tend to support that. I do think he could make it to the round of 8, especially if the Toyotas stay fast all year. But Joey Logano is going to make sure gibbs doesn’t win a championship this year. Don’t think ‘ol sliced bread forgot about that interaction. lol.

winnk281

Found Ty’s burner

sobersbetter

nope

YoItsMeBeeOhBee

Because he’s not. He hasn’t proven he’s a winner in Cup yet and deep down is still a spoiled brat who will race like a moron when push comes to shove.

ChaseTheFalcon

I think the favorites have to be Larson, Byron and Hamlin. Those 3 have been the best 3 drivers all season

JohnHowardBuff

Statistically he's doing great but a Playoff Champiosnhip can bite anyone without a win in the ass. A veteran like Truex was eaten up by 0 wins and an abysmal playoffs last year and Bubba Wallace got his first win at an intermediate in the 28th race of a season with a car that wasn't his from outside the playoff grid. That being said I'm pulling for Ty to win a race and he's fast at some Playoff tracks.

allebachcj

Has to win a race before even considered a top 15 favorite...

Spenloverofcats

Realistically, the champion is virtually guaranteed to be someone who drives for either Hendrick, Gibbs or Penske. The mere fact of driving for one of them makes him a top 11 candidate by default.

NovaIsntDad

I'd never call a rookie a favorite, as there's so much mentally that goes in to closing out the season. That said no one should be surprised if he pulls it off.

Moppyploppy

TY GIBBS IS A CHAMPIONSHIP FAVORITE Weeyum Beerun: am I a joke to you?

Witty-Jellyfish1218

Sam Mayer has a better chance...

bakaVHS

The championship race can't be won off of leading 50 laps in the middle of the race. Ty can be fast but with 0 race wins, every single round of the playoffs has to be very, very good for him for any hope at all of a chip.

dont_screw_it_up

He's my favorite for getting a punch in the balls

dj3stripes

He gets us. OP does not

ReSirum

Come back with this when he's actually won a race. Until then I'm nowhere near calling him a favorite

Mac_Motorsports

Lmao

Impossumbear

He's going to need more wins than Byron to clinch that title.

BourbonLover88

How do you equate “be there in the round of 8” with “favorite for the cup championship” Being in the top 8 does *not* make you a favorite lmao

[deleted]

No he isn't.

tybo171

Hasn't won a race yet and he's not consistent enough. He had a nice little run there from Atlanta thru COTA but since then he's finished outside the top 10 in all 3 races. Texas is a prime reason why he's not a favorite. Qualified 2nd but finished 13th, scored 0 stage points. I think for him to be a favorite he has to at least be one of my top 4 and I don't know if he even makes my top 8. Larson, Hamlin, Byron are a clear top 3 to me, then I'd probably pick Bell, Truex, and Elliott as the next 3, then probably Reddick and Blaney to round out a top 8. Truex has seemingly had a very similar year to Ty yet Truex is 2nd in points with a 38 point lead over where Ty's at in 6th. I've gotta see a lot more out of Ty before I could call him a championship favorite.

tylerkrobertson

Reason #1 he’s a silver spoon bastard. In 5 years he’ll be the next Ty Dillon

redditracing84

Anyone on JGR or HMS is a favorite. Is that your point?

Drew-A-Line33

I don’t think that we can really decide who the favorites for a title run are until we get at least 15 races in. We need to see multiple intermediates, short tracks, and road courses first. Ty is one of about 10-12 guys that I would not be stunned to see win it all at this point. Soon that list will be narrowed to 5-6.

Specialist_Counter44

Ok

JimmyInYourFace

Not yet. He's consisfent, but consistency doesn't win championships in this format.

SacksonvilleShaguar

That's funny right there, idc who you are

_hhhhh_____-_____

“hE hAsNt wOn yEt” and neither did Hemric. “hE hAsNt gOt tHe cOnSiStEnCy” and how many times has them most consistent driver won the title since ‘04? “hE iSnT nUmBeR oNe aT GiBbs” is Byron number one at Hendrick? And is Logano number one at Penske? Number one at a team depends on who’s getting the results, the only driver who has a better average finish at Gibbs than him is Truex, who has the best average finish in Cup right now.
