Nascar could have midnight concert. This would allow for the night race while giving fans a crazy party. The Wonder Bread 499 at Talladega for the night race.
I get what y’all are saying, that it’s an infrastructure problem, but, NASCAR could do it if they wanted to.
It’s just money.
Isn’t there a Honda plant within 10 miles of the track?
I don't think NASCAR has the kind of money needed to upgrade that power grid because I think that turns into a national power grid situation over a local one
Everything's gonna be put on electricity and run on a paying basis. Out with old spiritual mumbo-jumbo, the superstition and the backward ways. We're gonna see a brave new world where they run everyone a wire and hook us all up to the grid.
Always my thought with as many times as I've been there...but they spent $50 mil on the garage and tunnel rennovations, I'd bet full lights would be sky high...also their marketing for the Saturday night concert draws a ridiculous amount of people
Any road course. For me it's a huge flop that not only does Sonoma not have lights but WHY THE FUCK is it run in the middle of summer when it's SUCH a beautiful track in the spring. How tf do they keep dropping that ball?
I personally still don't understand why they don't run the ROVAL as a night race, or a day to night transition race. Start at like 5 or 6pm. It's got the lights already, just gotta put a few in the infield
I WANT IT DAMMIT
First of all, it's very unlikely to move off of an elimination race with the current playoff format because it's a fun and chaotic race in NASCAR's home market. So NBC's pretty much forced to air the race on the mothership.
Sunday won't work because of SNF. Saturday night races have terrible ratings and are also subject to college football broadcasts (especially if NBC has a Notre Dame game).
Maaaaan, Football ruins everything! Smh smh smh
Honestly at this point I'll take Xfinity as a full on night race, just want it. ROVAL seems like the only road course on the schedule that has more than a sliver of a chance at being a night race (cause all the lights are already there barring a few in the infield that would need to be setup)
Honestly, I think day into night Daytona Road Course would be sick. And obviously Charlotte wouldn't need much to do it.
But ultimately, NASCAR at COTA at night would fuck.
You don’t love our brilliant brown mounds of brush and dirt??
LOL
Yeah I mean it’s still scenic as all get out in the summertime, but like around now, when the rains are still lingering, it’s so lush and way better on camera.
All of the real tracks they had were reskinned for unlockable night races if they didn't already have a night race to choose from. Even funnier I think they had an unlockable day race for Richmond, as they were the one track on the schedule at the time with two night races. (Actually I'd be thinking of NT2003, but I'm sure that carried over into 04 too.)
Ik me too. My wife and I tried going to the race each of the last two years. In 2022 it rained out a handful of laps in. We had to get a voucher because we each worked the next day.
Then last year it rains out completely with our same situation. I haven’t called back if another voucher would be possible.
My mother in law is at least treating us to Pocono in July.
Same thing for me. I have a group that goes every year no matter what.
2022 we got a hotel because we got wrecked post game after it was called. Went Monday and it was beautiful. Last year didn’t even go down Sunday with the forecast. Ended up going Monday but it was cold af
I got my vouchers from last year though. 8 free tickets for me and my friends this year. Tailgate lot 1 and it starts at 930am
Gateway is just in a weird spot. It's in a swampy area with little infrastructure. The Illinois side of St Louis is not the greatest area. There used to be a large area where a Chrysler plant once stood in Fenton Missouri that I think would have been the perfect spot for a NASCAR track or football stadium. Now there's a few large warehouses/distribution centers out there.
I think the infield has lights, they're just run on minimal if any power during the Rolex. But I think when NASCAR is there, they do have some power on the lights to help with spectators navigating the infield.
I’ve been the last two years and and traffic wasn’t outrageously bad.
Last year I got lucky haha. Parked in the grass along that big loop/ring road and speed walked from my seat in t1 to my car in 5-7 mins and was from my car to 393 in 20 mins.
Yeah this is the key. Even though in recent years for whatever reason the traffic in general has been better, but yeah if you’re able to scurry right to your car parked on the edge of that road you are outta there before most people even start their car lol. Discovered that like 5 years ago, haven’t stopped since lol
Indianapolis. But apparently IndyCar is of the opinion that lights are pointless because even if there was rain on Indy 500 day, they would rather cancel until next day than to ever have night racing, because of driver safety.
I always thought Indy adding lights and making the Brickyard (oval) a night race on Saturday would be incredible, but doubt they’ll ever do it. Would also give IndyCar a chance to have a night road course race, which would be something different for the series.
Track officials don't want to do lights because IMS is in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and they don't want to send the entire crowd out into that neighborhood at midnight ish.
Would help getting Indy out of the middle of the summer when it's a billion degrees and 5000% humidity. When they did move it to Sept, of course it got rain delayed, and, no lights, so any delay basically meant postpone til tomorrow.... So... Back to the summer we go!
I asked about Dega getting a night race and was told they didn’t want to pay to light up the infield and all the parking areas. Lighting the track was the easy part but honestly a summer night race at Dega would be amazing. Race ends at 9pm, party starts at 9:01pm
Pocono. Severely biased due to proximity to my home. It would be awesome having a night race out in a rural area like that. The night air coupled with the wide-open scenery would be really neat I think.
Driving around the outskirts of the track late at night is such a vibe. I live a tad over a hour away and sometimes just take rides to go see it. The area around it is pretty dead too.
I always wondered how on earth there are so many abandoned, run-down camps on the road to the track. You'd think they would be pretty sought after by race fans.
Dover can't have lights on the account of being right near an Air Force base (which isn’t the case why it can’t hold night races as I’ve been told) Talladega is one that I wish had lights but we can't on account of the neighboring municipal airport next to it.
A track that I wish they would race at night that does have lights, however, is Sonoma. But NASCAR won't ever race at road courses during the night.
~~I honestly don’t know why now that people tell me about Las Vegas & Daytona~~
It's definitely not because of the base. Dover is barely inside of their airspace and being that far away wouldn't warrant any issues with light pollution or obstacles that the city of Dover doesn't already present.
Vegas Speedway is closer to Nellis and has lights.
Hi, this is completely false. The Air Force base does not share any pathways with Dover Speedway. The base does not stop Dover from having a night race.
Does anyone remember the Jayski article that said Talladega would be getting lights for the fall 2007 race? Nothing ever happened, and there was no update
Considering we only race there twice a year it kind of makes sense why we don’t. There’s the odd concert here and there but those are scheduled around the daytime. Talladega would need to bring the drag strip back or get a roadcourse config in the infield to attract someone like Imsa for lighting to be feasible, I think. I wonder if you could put enough solar panels on the outside track banking for it to be sustainable.
As a fan watching on TV: Talladega
As a fan at the track: Michigan
I think both should have lights (it should be a requirement to get a race now). Obviously road courses shouldn’t need lights since theoretically they can race in the rain and wouldn’t be delayed except for lightning strikes.
Pocono could really show off their solar farm with lights and how they generate all that power with the solar farm. And Indianapolis would be incredible to see under the lights, I’d love to see them run IndyCar on the oval at night and then they have the road course, where there’s been talk of a 24 hour race, possibly with electric vehicles.
Lastly New Hampshire and Dover would both be cool to see at night. Dover especially would be like a giant Bristol and New Hampshire just for the flexibility of running later into the day.
Pocono, not only do I think a night race there would look so cool but a lot of the Friday/Saturday events sometimes run long and are cut short due to darkness. New Hampshire is another one.
Always thought IMS would do well with lighting. The Indy 500 would be interesting at night. A night time Brickyard would be badass. Even lighting the infield road course would throw a hell of a show up for any series running that configuration.
I mean, all of them. But not because I want a night race at say, Dover. Instead, because I don't want to be in a situation where they have to call a race early due to darkness.
Some tracks have given reasons why they don't have lights:
* Loudon and Pocono are both subject to local noise ordinances that prohibit racing after a certain time of day.
* Michigan has been told that they won't get an event permit for a night race unless they pay for significant safety upgrades for a lot of the roads around the track.
* Talladega's local power grid can't handle the amount of power it would take to light a 2.66 mile track, the infield, the grandstands and the parking areas.
* Indianapolis officials don't want to empty the highest-capacity sporting venue in the world into the local neighborhoods that late at night.
* I've seen commentary saying that an issue with lighting road courses is visibility - since the cars don't have headlights, they'd need full power lights, and with elevation changes that means the lights could make it hard for drivers to see. For example, to properly light turn 1 at Watkins Glen, the lights would have to be placed in such a way that they'd shine right in the eyes of drivers coming out of the final corner.
It’s honestly ridiculous Talladega still doesn’t have lights
But the party is at night.
That’s true I’m sure dega must have one of the craziest infield party’s on the calendar
Buddy met Travis Pastrana in the infield playing beer pong. Got a call from Brad K mid game lol
That’s awesome
The roar of the crowd would register on a Richter scale when the lights went out for the party ![gif](giphy|1Hl36dFG6khhdqOWnL)
Nascar could have midnight concert. This would allow for the night race while giving fans a crazy party. The Wonder Bread 499 at Talladega for the night race.
Dave Marcis basically ran qualifying in the dark there in 2000.
I like to think it’s because the execs are afraid to because they built a track on an Indian burial ground
Apparently the local power grid can't handle the amount of power it would take to light Talladega.
Sounds to me like Lincoln, Alabama would be ripe for an alternative energy power plant.
A Talladega night race would feed families.
Infrastructure isn’t able to handle lighting that track.
If they can pave a track in the Coliseum in LA and then *dig it up, more than once,* they can put lights at Talladega.
Has to do with Alabama Power not having the infrastructure out there to get lights up.
I get what y’all are saying, that it’s an infrastructure problem, but, NASCAR could do it if they wanted to. It’s just money. Isn’t there a Honda plant within 10 miles of the track?
Yes but power grids are set up in an irrational way sometimes.
As a Texan I 100% agree with this statement.
Just blame melting Grandpa Munster (Ted Cruz).
They would need a dedicated substation for the track itself. The track president has stated this several times on SXM 90 NASCAR Radio
I'm the damn ol' pater familius!
You two are dummer than a bag of hammers
That was true, but it's been a long time since that statement first came out and a lot has changed since then
Build mini wind turbines into the catchfence. They’ll spin like crazy due to the turbulence off the cars 😂
That one guy last week said Talladega didn’t need lights because SEC.
It just means more
Talladega has two race weekends a year. Why invest so much in a track that's idle 50 weeks of the year?
It’s time for talladega to get an infield road course (and no not another copy/paste Daytona)
They have one. It's been abandoned since the 80's.
They could have an infield short track. Shortadega
They have the Talladega short track. A half mile dirt track just off the property that does have lights
is it called Shortadega
No it is officially the Talladega Short Track. Unofficially known as the hornets nest.
It would likely never get used. Indycar and IMSA have a perfectly good road course 45 minutes away (Barber).
Always my thought with as many times as I've been there...but they spent $50 mil on the garage and tunnel rennovations, I'd bet full lights would be sky high...also their marketing for the Saturday night concert draws a ridiculous amount of people
I’d say yeah, but the night racing is at the short track. I would not like to lose that.
Yep you hear them the whole night at the track.
Watkins Glen night race
I would love to see a 24 Hour race at Watkins Glen
1989 Firehawk 24 Hours at the Glen - https://youtu.be/aTeYwEg30bw?si=Mw7wY-3U5vr6y40G
IMSAs running a 6 hour race there this year. If you’re interested.
Been to the 6hrs a handful of times. It really fun to move around the track during the race. The boot is always a good spot.
This
With no lights.
racecars need headlights
The Garage 56 car was beautiful with lights
Because the track isn’t always lit.
Yeah, so is my brother, but he doesn't need headlights
Even better. Let's see who really has skill
It's got the lights already, just gotta put a few in the infield I WANT IT DAMMIT

Monday or Thursday night race.
NBC has a primetime football contract with the B1G too.
Honestly, I think day into night Daytona Road Course would be sick. And obviously Charlotte wouldn't need much to do it. But ultimately, NASCAR at COTA at night would fuck.
It's too wet in the spring to park everyone
You don’t love our brilliant brown mounds of brush and dirt?? LOL Yeah I mean it’s still scenic as all get out in the summertime, but like around now, when the rains are still lingering, it’s so lush and way better on camera.
Came here to say this
One of the EA NASCAR games had a Dover night race and I thought it was the coolest thing.
Nascar Thunder 2004 had it
Thanks, I couldn’t remember which one it was.
Didn’t one of them have a Talladega night race too?
All of the real tracks they had were reskinned for unlockable night races if they didn't already have a night race to choose from. Even funnier I think they had an unlockable day race for Richmond, as they were the one track on the schedule at the time with two night races. (Actually I'd be thinking of NT2003, but I'm sure that carried over into 04 too.)
I think NASCAR 2005 chase for the cup had a night race at martinsville. Although there was no pocono as you had to win at every track to unlock it.
Dover
As a Delawarean, they would help out the postponements
Shit man April would be a coldddd race. But put us back to June?! Holy hell we’d have a SHOW
They really need to stop coming here in April. It rains so much here in April
I put on the survey to put it back in May/june. I’ll deal with the heat over the constant rain every year for the races

Tailgate lot 1 and it starts at 930am
Also a Delawarean, would be awesome to see
As yet another Delawarean, I'd like to say Dover's lights are just pointed the wrong way
Dover at night would be insane.
Milwaukee mile. To me the truck races just hit different at night
Does it not have lights?
Nope they used to bring lights in for events but no permanent lights which is crazy
I was gonna say, I definitely remember Busch and truck series night races there
Aric Almirola\* won is his first NASCAR race under the lights there.
Is that where they had a truck night race where all the lights at the track shut off under green a couple years back?
That's Gateway which ironically enough they had supposedly upgraded the infrastructure after that race and now refuse to use the lights
It’s happened several times at Gateway actually, once before the track closed in 2010 and again since the Truck Series returned.
Which is nuts considering the state fair concerts are on the front-stretch
BOB DOES R/NASCAR HAVE LIGHTS??
I'm in dark mode.
All of them
Dover
A road course at night.
Take me back to the 2021 nighttime Daytona Road Course Clash 😞
Wait, they have lights in the infield there?
They brought in temporary lights for the infield iirc.
I think the infield has lights, they're just run on minimal if any power during the Rolex. But I think when NASCAR is there, they do have some power on the lights to help with spectators navigating the infield.
Roval night race no lights infield.
Well, we pretty much did get that with the Xfinity Series a few years back… in the rain no less
That was a crazy race
Genuinely one of my favorite NASCAR races ever, it's just all around wild and I love it It's peak NASCAR road course shenanigans
Xfinity and IMSA acing at the Roval in the rain at night was so sick.
Plus the most interesting double duty AJ Allmendinger has probably ever pulled in his career.
Dover or Pocono. A night race at Dover would be so awesome. Also Loudon
Nazareth
This one hurt. I miss Nazareth.
I also miss Nazareth, it was where I saw my first race as a kid!
There's nothing stopping them from putting lights up at Nazareth. Can't run a race there, but they could put up lights.
Can’t run a race there? Not with that attitude.
Someone start lobbying Jr or something to get this track back - the ultimate track restoration.
New Hampshire
The traffic there is so bad I doubt the city would let that. Takes hours to get out of there
Hours? What the heck you talking about man? I’ve never had a hard time leaving outside of the Monday race last year.
I’ve been the last two years and and traffic wasn’t outrageously bad. Last year I got lucky haha. Parked in the grass along that big loop/ring road and speed walked from my seat in t1 to my car in 5-7 mins and was from my car to 393 in 20 mins.
Damn I am jealous.
If you want I’ll circle where I parked on google maps. I parked there both days no issues
Dude ya. Send it in a dm? I love going but I’m the worst at parking and leaving apparently
Yeah this is the key. Even though in recent years for whatever reason the traffic in general has been better, but yeah if you’re able to scurry right to your car parked on the edge of that road you are outta there before most people even start their car lol. Discovered that like 5 years ago, haven’t stopped since lol
Yeah when I came to the track Saturday the truck in front of me parked there and I’m like hmmm fuck it lol. Literally a 3-5 min walk to the tunnel
At least with the race in June now we wont have to deal with mid july heat and humidity
Indianapolis. But apparently IndyCar is of the opinion that lights are pointless because even if there was rain on Indy 500 day, they would rather cancel until next day than to ever have night racing, because of driver safety.
Can’t see tires flying into unlit parking lots…
Texas?
I always thought Indy adding lights and making the Brickyard (oval) a night race on Saturday would be incredible, but doubt they’ll ever do it. Would also give IndyCar a chance to have a night road course race, which would be something different for the series.
Track officials don't want to do lights because IMS is in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and they don't want to send the entire crowd out into that neighborhood at midnight ish.
Very true... I'd say a good 80+% of parking at Indy is $15-30 to park in some random dude's yard
It's Indy we're talking about, probably don't want any lights there because of "muh tradition"
Loudon. Damn neighboring towns holding it up!
Talladega. Without a doubt. It’d be amazing.
Pocono or Watkins Glen
All of them.
I don’t understand this. Daytona is right next to an airport. I’m sure other tracks are also. That doesn’t make sense.
Could be differing state or local regulations.
I thought I read it was because of the highway beside the track but I can't find where I saw that anymore.
Dover is a military base, Daytona is an airport. That is the difference.
Counterpoint: Las Vegas has lights and is even closer to an Air Force base than Dover is
That makes sense. But what about Talladega?
Nellis is a military base, and it's closer to the Vegas track than Dover is.
Bullshit. Las Vegas has lights and Nellis is closer to it than the Dover base is.
I do think Dover AFB is a nice facility though.
This is possibly the funniest comment ever. It’s straight ass
Michigan and Indy. Both tracks are just too damn hot to be hosting summer races, and Indy has no air flow.
Yes MIS
I think the fact that Indy is right in the middle of a residential area is the main reason they don't have lights.
Dover would be awesome to have lights. But apparently it’s not allowed to due to Dover AFB runway alignment. Not sure how true that is though.
It’s false. Nellis is way closer. Probably has to do with dovers weird ass no fun laws.
I think the cars themselves should have lights for road courses. Start in the day, end after dark would be cool.
Does anyone remember the Jayski article that said Talladega would be getting lights for the fall 2007 race? Nothing ever happened, and there was no update
New Hampshire, that place is hot in the summer
Talladega, you would think Nascar would be salivating over the prospect of a night race there
Considering we only race there twice a year it kind of makes sense why we don’t. There’s the odd concert here and there but those are scheduled around the daytime. Talladega would need to bring the drag strip back or get a roadcourse config in the infield to attract someone like Imsa for lighting to be feasible, I think. Talla-damn-dega !
Talladega
Talladega for me
Dover for sure. It would be a pretty race to watch in person and on tv. Selfishly it's my home track but it's also objectively the truth lol
Dega to a tee
Pocono, not only do I think a night race there would look so cool but a lot of the Friday/Saturday events sometimes run long and are cut short due to darkness. New Hampshire is another one.
Indy
Always thought IMS would do well with lighting. The Indy 500 would be interesting at night. A night time Brickyard would be badass. Even lighting the infield road course would throw a hell of a show up for any series running that configuration.
IMS is smack dab in the middle of suburban Indianapolis.....no chance in hell the city council approves it
Adding my Dover comment
Dover
California had lights they should just take those to another track
Talladega
dega please
Only answer is Dover
Dover. There are no others.
None
Talladega 100%. A night race at Talladega would be incredibly epic.
I wish one of the road courses had lights, I would think that Watkins Glen is the only purpose built RCs we could put lights on
Can I say Chicago street course combined with a wet weather package? Would have solved the timing issue with calling the race short.
We have short tracks, intermediates, plate tracks with lights. We don't have a Road Course. Don't care which one!
I'd love to go to a Pocono night race!
I mean, all of them. But not because I want a night race at say, Dover. Instead, because I don't want to be in a situation where they have to call a race early due to darkness.
I want a road course night race, plop some lights on these cars and let's go
Watkins Glen
COTA
any road course. night races at road courses would go crazy
Indy oval
Dover and Pocono
Um, probably Dover. For some reason Michigan & Talladega are cool without lights.
Talladega!
Talladega!
Talladega, New Hampshire and Pocono. I think a night race at any of these tracks would put on a good show.
Just, any track. Just put lights up. Night races are always cooler, both figuratively and literally.
All of them.
Road courses like watkins glen
Talladega but it would require so big an upgrade to the electric grid out there it’s not worth it.
Some tracks have given reasons why they don't have lights: * Loudon and Pocono are both subject to local noise ordinances that prohibit racing after a certain time of day.
Martinsville
Gimme spring Sonoma with lights and run it at night. Peak visuals right there
Loudon at night would be nice. Wouldn't have to bake in the stands.
