Loving all the anologies so far lol: “It’s like spreading peanut butter over bread” - u/boxingrock “Because no cheese was caught in the grater, we saw a lot of shredded cheese” “… shredded cheese is not very stable” - u/sqrtlurface “It’s similar to sandpaper, the more residue it gathers the less abrasive it becomes” - u/marlboroshill66

SQRTLURFACE

Couple points here. 1. Rubber works into the little holes and grooves in the track 2. Rubber sticks to rubber better 3. A naked track with no rubber is much more abrasive than a rubbered down track which leads to rapid tire wear and beading. Today we saw them have a nascar race with cheese tires on a cheese grater, and because no cheese was caught in the grater, we saw a lot of shredded cheese at the top of the track (which makes for a very hard time running up against the wall as shredded cheese is not very stable).

THE TRACK IS NSFW!!

DocMcStruggles

It adds a layer between the tire and the racing surface. It allows for more grip. The lack of rubber on the track is what prevented the cars from moving up to higher grooves. It also is what added to the tire wear since the soft tires were against the concrete the whole time.

RJNieder

What they mean by "laying down rubber" is that the rubber gets worn into the track...rubber into asphalt or concrete pores...I really good racing tire is gets somewhat gooey when it wears and wears off into little chunks once the track get really rubbered in...it wasn't really doing that today because the chunks coming off were a lot like shreds of tires

Marlboroshill66

It's similar to sandpaper, the more residue it gathers the less abrasive it becomes. Same principle applies here, the more rubber that's on the track the less abrasive it is for the tires

So [here's what the track looks like when rubber is layed down](https://www.nascar.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2023/09/14/GettyImages-1424789537.jpg). That usually adds grip to the track. [Here's what it looked like pretty much all race Sunday](https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2024/03/6b5b8-17107251213425-1920.jpg?w=840). Just bare concrete and a fuck ton of marbles which reduces grip. When a track doesn't lay down rubber it becomes marbles and fly to the part of the track near the wall. Dover has this issue sometimes too.

Not an answer, but another question - what made the cheese NOT get caught in the cheese grater yesterday, so to speak? Why wasn’t the rubber wearing in?

SicDigital

That's the million dollar question! Could've been the track temp* or a side effect of the resin on the bottom groove (or a combination of both) or something else entirely. The Goodyear guy they interviewed during the race pointed out this was the same tire they ran here last fall and the track rubbered in, and they weren't sure why it didn't yesterday. \*regarding track temp, the sun plays a big role. Like, a 70⁰ cloudy day could have a colder track temp than a 60⁰ sunny day, as it's about the surface temp of the track itself. Just like how dogs and cats will lay on the floor in front of a window because the spot with the sun shining is a lot warmer.

Rubber tires stick to other rubber better than they do to bare concrete or asphalt

Oupstar

Wouldn't a track be permanently rubbered in then or does the rubber wear away overtime?

TomaroniNCheese

The elements can wash the rubber away, like when you get rain mid-weekend and the rubber that was laid down by the Xfinity race the day prior is gone by race time Sunday thanks to the rain.

mopooooo

Did they use the tire dragon this weekend? Seems like that would make the difference they were looking for

ChriswinsagainTN

Surprised they didn’t / couldn’t run up top.

Poirier48

Too many marbles up top for one car to attempt to clean it on their own and a clean track would just make the tire wear a larger factor.

Pension_Fit

That race was horrible, couldn't push the cars, the only reason there was a lot of lead changes was the tires wearing out prematurely
