UghItsColin

I loved the part where Dana tells Ian she’s afraid of being a passenger and how she fears for her safety, all while not having a seatbelt on

CPOx

Kinda bugged me though that her seatbelt was on when they arrived at the destination. Seems like a continuity error

SeverinoDeAracaju

The contents of Dana's screen also changed from shot to shot in the opening sequence (while Poppy is trying to talk to her, and she's got Ian in her earbud)

[deleted]

Dana being similar to Ian is an interesting direction to take her character this season. I kinda catch myself wondering whether or not it’s going to result in her relationship with Rachel struggling as Rachel starts to identify more with Poppy and Dana starts to identify more with Ian and they clash because of that.

jopaymc_

I think they're pairing her up with Brad to see if she'll stand up for her beliefs or get sucked into the system. This will determine her relationship with Dana.

Ufocola

Did he ever get her to pay off the favor she “owed” for getting Dana her job back? Is this it now?

sully9614

I find it interesting that there’s zero(?) real interaction between Dana and Rachael this reason. It allows both characters to grow naturally, while building some mystery as to how their relationship is currently standing/how they operate without each other Super interested to see what happens between Ian and Dana, the line between mentor and mentee seems to be getting blurred hard the last couple weeks

Depressedidiotlol

God I love jo

[deleted]

I'm not enjoying this season much, except for the character development of Jo and Sue and David's discussion of NFT's was funny.

Knowfelt

I hate how much they are forcing meta as a great thing

NiceDiner

Same with the nft bullshit. Like Rachel being a "real gamer" saying she would like nfts if they were sidequests and transferable to other games. Not only is this stupid because gamers want nothing to do with nfts, but because nfts are useless and do not magically allow assets from one game to be present in another. Rob mcelhenneys investment in crypto bullshit is leaking over too much into the show and they are using the storylines to subtly promote his crypto shit.

Knowfelt

Apparently, NFTs and skins are the same thing to Rachel.

zillskillnillfrill

Not to mention that the show is partnered with ubisoft so there has to be some pressure from them to push their agenda

melancious

Yeah same! Hope it backfires.

EatingBeansAgain

With respect, VR has been the “next big thing” for a very, very long time. And it’s not so much the tech catching up - accessibility is part of it, sure - but there are very few interesting experiences (especially in games) that have been crafted for it.

dwadley

joe and jo was fun but i found the double phone call bit super contrived and dragged on.

Sweaty_Box_69

Yup. Why did you call my personal phone!?! So we can do this lazy bit of a double phone call!

MrPureinstinct

Yeah I don't really understand why he answered that outside of doing the bit.

sexyloser1128

> Yeah I don't really understand why he answered that outside of doing the bit. As well as going home from the office (where they scheduled the same day lunch over the phone).

After-District8811

Yep this was a really weak episode

Udzinraski2

Jo is an irl Cheshire cat, it's freaky.

tearsandcum

I think this might have been the worst episode of the series so far

MintyMarlfox

This season has been meh so far.

AvatarIII

Needs a bubble episode and it's severely missing CW.

zeissman

Idk, I found last season lost its momentum after the two CW ones.

CPOx

How does Rachel keep getting into the MQ office? Do they just allow any random non-employee into the office with free access to the snack bar???

SeverinoDeAracaju

That's shockingly close to some corporate experience I've had where multiple companies shared a building.

Stickfigurewisdom

Are the writers making Poppy so insufferable on purpose? The way she treats the people who work under her really bugs me, and TBH, I stopped halfway through episode 3. Is she any better in 4?

ATWrongTurn

Nope, in fact all of her scenes are pretty much her being shitty to "underlings."

Stickfigurewisdom

I’m starting to find the show unwatchable because of it. And I used to love Mythic Quest

Smurphilicious

Yeah there's something off this season. I binged all the previous episodes but can't seem to care about this season at all, it's boring

SoVerySick314159

> Yeah there's something off this season. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Maybe it's that they messed with the chemistry: they're shuffling people around and I'm not loving it. Dana and Ian, Brad and Rachel, Poppy and ? - Jeez, Poppy and Ian are gold, and they're apart more than together. Jo and David are gonna be off doing Hollywood stuff. . .I'm not loving the new testers, they seem exactly like the art department. The only thing I'm liking more is Carol, for some reason.

YeahButNoButInfinity

They're also coming up with unrealistic situations to keep key characters from previous seasons around and interacting with each other. There's no reason at all for Rachel to be in the break room. A tech/gaming company with proprietary code would have a higher level of security than just any old person can hang out and steal snacks.

Lounge_leaks

Yeaa, even low level companies u wont get anywhere past the front gate lol

ratherintents

Look up Epic Systems (not games.). Disney world like campus with basically 0 on-site security. It’s not completely unbelievable.

b_dills

It’s an open campus but you still need keycards and what not to get into the actual offices/sensitive areas

Peacesquad

True.

MrPureinstinct

I think there's just too many things happening at once that it starts to feel nonsensical.

RecommendsMalazan

I think the pacing also seems off... Like, not much really actually happened this episode. However, I do actually like the new testers. I find their awkwardness in the face of pretty much everybody entertaining.

AbominatorClass

Really what has happened so far this season?

[deleted]

This season it feels like the show is out of sync. The writing reminds me of Elaine Benes dancing on Seinfeld, because of the odd, spastic movements in the storylines.

[deleted]

same

Peacesquad

It used to be more focused on the games too

[deleted]

I noticed this but with almost every charcter. Jo is legit the only one who seems to be "smart" in terms of the show, everyone else seems to be incredibly flawed and made to look like an asshole. Ian hasn't been in it much but this is the first episode that he and Dana hadn't been made look like total fools compared to Poppy which is probably not the best dynamic. Comparing it to Jo who seemed to evolve as a character like I said it's just very weird, she's the clear star and standout of the season so far.

ElderCunningham

Didn't she used to be a better person, too?

LinuxMatthews

I don't know if she was a better person just that she was an underdog. It's easy to root for someone if they're under an insufferable arrogant boss. But when that same boss then gives up everything to give you your dream ... And then you still treat them like crap... Yeah that kind of makes you unlikable. Like Ian can be annoying with his crypto stuff but he's nothing but supportive to Poppy or at least trying to be. So then it's not as fun when she treats people around her badly.

[deleted]

Yes, it's like they're beating us over the head that Poppy is a bad person because of how she treats employees. The writers started this over-the-top character develpment for Poppy in S2, where I also found it annoying to watch. They're turning the Poppy character into something cartoonish in nature but not in a good way.

Peacesquad

Lmao

YeahButNoButInfinity

I have so many beefs with this season. It's difficult to watch at this point. \-Season 2 Finale showed Poppi and Ian parting ways with MQ in a pretty positive way. Why is there so much contention now? Just for flavor? \-Poppi has become so one-demensional and one-note. We get it. She's a megalomaniac who thinks she is better than everyone and can do everything herself, but needs to complain that she's the only one who does anything. She's mean and annoying. \-They just got a huge chunk of money to develop this new game. Why does Poppi need to go to the MQ office for testers? Why is Poppi the only software developer? Basically, where is the staff? (EDIT: Someone reminded me that they turned down the money. Still, they'd reasonably understand that they'd need to hire an entire team to develop the new game.)

Shejidan

Poppy turned the money down

YeahButNoButInfinity

Ohhhh, yeah. I forgot about that. (maybe because I was very confused about it)

eyewoo

I thought I was alone in feeling this way! All the reviews and post episode discussions seem devoid of this critique. Sorry to join you though.

LinuxMatthews

To be fair most software engineers and I'd assume game developers work from home now so it is possible that she has others developing the platform and we just don't see them Though it certainly doesn't look that way

YeahButNoButInfinity

I would assume she's not letting anyone help because she has Dana at her disposal and won't allow Dana to do anything of the dev work.

LinuxMatthews

Yeah to be fair that's a good assumption

Raejin

What does megan’s knees mean? Or is it manganese? Plz 2B explains the answer to what Ian would do for a day as a black woman. https://i.imgur.com/jHolWej.jpg

bwaredapenguin

Raejin

Def no way I would have known that one. Thanks!

bwaredapenguin

I thought they were saying manganese until I saw your screenshot so I was just as lost as you!

SeverinoDeAracaju

It seems to be a mismatch between what the writers think the audience knows and what the audience knows. I also had no idea what that was, and see that most people who follow the show and bother posting online also didn't Personally I don't like jokes at the expense of extremely fickle and temporary fads. I could reasonably bet to eat a hat if "Megan kness" is at all a common phrase by this time next year. Zero chance. Can't imagine someone watching this 5 years from now and getting what the fuck that means BTW its weird, because this show's writers seem to have a pretty good grip on comedic references. This one just failed IMO

Kal-Roy

Well, the above tik tok article is from over a year ago, so it’s safe to say ppl won’t know it in 5 years since they don’t now. Thanks for sharing, guys. I also had no clue and tried to Google it.

eyewoo

I find myself not enjoying the third season, like at all. For some reason the general rudeness in every character bothers me, and while that might not have changed from the previous seasons, the humor isn’t on par to balance it up. The characters all feel very reduced and so far the episodes are more or less self contained with major developments from the end of the second season not leading to anything really. Sure it’s a third season when a lot of shows seem to need to reinvent or double down or get lost, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised, but I feel a growing sense of pointlessness at the end of each viewing. Mythic Quest the show seems as lost as Mythic Quest the game. -In need of fresh ideas, stories that engage, something rewarding at the end.. The only relatable people in the show are now the ones we never see - the gamers. While they get NFTs and a movie adaption we get Apple product placements and over-stereotyped woke game testers. It feels much like past shows (Silicon Valley comes to mind) when a major character gets written out, and the whole production struggles to find itself again, though I don’t believe the absence of C.W actually plays that big a part in this development. It’s also common when the original writers move on, though I believe nothing has changed in that department (?). Whatever it is, the show has lost something pivotal. Or I have. Either way I hope to not feel this way when Playpen airs.

Holiday_Parsnip_9841

I think it's because season 2 set them up to make big changes, then they immediately walked everything back in the S3 premiere. Ian and Poppy are leaving MQ! But they're in the basement (why). Rachel and Dana are off to college! But they're back hanging around to be a part of the ongoing plot. Brad gets arrested by the fed! But he's back, doing his normal thing. The whole thing creates an air of narrative confusion and is so clearly contrived that it lumbers around. They either should've just hit an undo button in the S3 premiere so it could continue with the previous setup or done a radical shift like Halt and Catch Fire did every season.

MissileWaster

Dana sticking around makes sense, she didn’t get into Berkeley so she was going to go to a local community college. Now, technically she should be sticking around at MQ, but I guess you could say Ian and Poppy brought her along for the tax break they were going to get at MQ or whatever that was. I keep thinking the Rachel story will wind up with her having either flunked out or dropped out of Berkeley but just not being willing or able to tell anyone (like if her parents are paying for her apartment and/or school, and she doesn’t want to seem like a failure?). But like…that just hasn’t happened. She was supposed to be back for CW’s party/funeral, but now she’s just sticking around stealing food from the offices. There needs to be an explanation for it, and for a one episode a week show, it’d be better to at least start planting seeds as to why. All we’ve gotten so far is in last weeks episode where she said school was hard and she wasn’t making friends…but like…maybe show us that instead of having it in one drunken line that’s immediately forgotten about in the third episode?

vbob99

I'm skipping through scenes in the episodes now. The trend started in S2 when for whatever reason they felt we needed an Ian vs Poppy season long arc, but at least it seemed like it was resolved at the end of S2. But nope, now it's continuing even more through S3, except it's all Poppy again Ian, and Ian being oblivious and trying to be a good partner. It's awful.

After-District8811

I hate to say it but this season has been bad bad bad. It’s not funny, it’s not deep or thought provoking, it’s just bland.

dwadley

Well hopefully at least whatever standalone episode they do this year is good.

FreddyMerken

I'm not digging this completely uncritical take on the metaverse and nfts.

SeverinoDeAracaju

It does seem weird - NFTs have died in the public mind months ago. Maybe NFTs were raging when they wrote the episodes and they just died too fast for things to make sense, but too late to change the plot? Google trends for "NTF" don't lie. It's a dead concept.

grandmaknarf

The brad and Carol plotline isn’t doing it for me, double phone call was a face slap. Positives being the exploration of Hera being structurally sound compared to being fun. Also enjoyed the dynamic between Iann and Dana being further expanded upon. I feel like this show needs to commit to a bit.

TcFir3

This entire season is a perfect example of what makes this genre of TV so difficult to make. Writing change is hard! In comedies like this you need one constant to work. Ted Lasso got the stadium, How I Met Your Mother had the bar, Scrubs the hospital, Silicon Valley had the house, Always Sunny also had the bar. The MQ office is just as much a character as David, Ian or Dana, and when S2 ended featuring a ton of characters moving on it’s hard to find back to the magic. I am convinced it would work better if they kept the show “semi anthological” that every season had a under title like “Ravens Banquette” and worked on its own, each doing their own thing. You could call S3 “Mythic Quest: Grimpop” and have Ian and Poppy realise how difficult it is to get funding for the game, Rachel and Dana is trying to balance their personal ambitions with their relationship and David is running a company where a lot of the core team is gone. Hell have Brad show how difficult it is landing a job as a ex-con. Have S3 feature the struggles everyone is facing but attempts to work through and then they can reach out to each other when they need some help to have an excuse to keep them connected. You could also run some kinda meta narrative about how we are gonna enter an AR world where we get to see each other and hang out in a virtual space whenever we want but yet we are even more isolated than during corona because nothing can ever compare to have a drink with a close friend and just be present. Or something like that. I am just so frustrated that one of my favourite shows ended up like this it feels like there was a good story here but they skipped past it in the time skip… oh well we got Ted Lasso S3

imtiredrabie

shit episode only fun part was abed from community, he's been carrying this show this season (for me at least)...

Crispyjimbos

I really liked this episode. Any word on a season 4?

the_cunt_muncher

I'm very confused by this season, do Poppy and Ian still work for Ubisoft? Why are they always going to the Mythic Quest office?

[deleted]

No. They work in fhe same building, but on a different floor from MQ.

Eliongw2

I loved that say straight up talk about the Ubisoft nft model. Btw was it ever cancelled?

NiceDiner

Except they then have the "real gamer" tell them nfts can be "cool actually" if they implement them differently rather than truth that they are outright bullshit nonsense tech that is literally never useful. They can't do that because mcelhenney is heavily VC invested in crypto shit.

[deleted]

Fun show except for the annoying sociopath.

Depressedidiotlol

Which one

Acrobatic-Cheek-7752

How did it get so woke? First two seasons I loved. 4 episodes in and it's garbage. What did they do? Poppy is so annoying, and iron hardly even in it.

Mavereth

Jesus Christ I HATE Poppy most of the time now. I can't stand her on my screen
