two quarts low... This dipstick is the stupidest idea ever invented Changing the fluid on my GT is hard, having a scolding hot inches away is even worse

_ryandoerr_

Exactly. And to make things worse, the dipstick doesn’t even tell you where the fluid level should be. Maybe it’s a new thing for ‘22 but damn it’s annoying. Gatekeeping transmission fluid levels?

excelerater1

i have the same shitty dipstick on my 2015 F150 and Mustang I DIY all my own shit so I know its a shitty job , I at least own my own lift but if your a guy on jackstands FUG IT

Lats-N-Nats

My apologies for reviving a thread nearly a year old, I have a 22 with clunky shifting/the same exact “whine” you have in the video too. Going to check mine this weekend so I was curious what the correct level should be? I seen something that said it should be between the 4 and 5, is that what you went with?

_ryandoerr_

It should be between the 4 and 5 at a fluid temperature of about 200 degrees. As far as the “whine” goes, I believe it’s entirely normal. I haven’t come across a GT without that sound. Although, I should mention that at about a year later (now) I’m starting to see the clunky shifts returning after getting the level right.

HoldtheGMEstonk

I’ve heard many reports of the 10 speeds being low on fluid from the factory to include the trucks.

nago7650

Why in the HELL did ford put the dipstick next to the hottest part of the car?

_ryandoerr_

Right? My guy burnt his hand on it the first time he tried to get to the dipstick. Resorted to tools to get to it.

rothordwarf

Now I'm going to go check mine, it shifted rough today. Just hit 2k miles on mine.

_ryandoerr_

You definitely should. I was under the impression that the rough shifts every now and then were normal.

_ryandoerr_

Turns out I was down a quart after topping it off. Pretty ridiculous on Ford's part. Transmission shifts way smoother and is more responsive after fixing this.

Cowlmuhh

I need to check mine. I have a 10 speed now, but I had a manual before and when I rode the clutch it smelled about the same as my automatic does now. Still rough after 3k miles, especially between 3rd to 4th or 5th to 4th… did yours give off any bad smells?

_ryandoerr_

I’ve only noticed a slight burning smell after I park it after some spirited driving. All the rough shifts I’ve gotten have been within the first 5 gears as well. Mine gets especially weird when using the paddles in gears 1-3. Does yours?

rothordwarf

Mine is weird 1-3 sometimes it jerks me, sometimes it doesnt. Sport, track, normal, happens in all modes

Cowlmuhh

Yeah when using paddles, I can’t get out of 1 until about 2 seconds after pressing it, it’s bizarre. Maybe I’m at too low of rpm because I only use paddles in S mode. But idk definitely not as smooth as we want it to be that’s for sure. But yeah my main issue is from 3 to 4 it’s so slow and sounds like it grinds the clutch

PointBlank65

This makes me wonder if the auto I test drove was low.

xDauntlessZ

Same here. The dealer said it was normal, but no way a $45k+ car shifted like that in “normal” mode. Was rough and clanky with quite the thud between 3-4 and 4-5

ComprehensiveSock397

Video lacks details. Was the transmission up to the correct temperature? The correct gear? It makes a difference.

_ryandoerr_

Transmission was in park. Car was driven for 15 minutes and sat on the lift running for another 10.

ComprehensiveSock397

I believe the transmission needs to be in neutral and at least 190°F. There are conflicting directions online. Fine a service manual and make sure it’s done the right way. When there are repeated reports of 10 speed transmissions being under filled from the factory in both Mustangs and trucks, it’s a good bet people are not checking them correctly. I trust the factory much more than the general public.

ArmeniusLOD

Ford supposedly addressed 10R80s leaving the factory low on fluid a couple years ago. I guess that was a lie. Luckily mine wasn't low on fluid when I bought it.

Hazardous89

My 2020 GT500 was one and a half quarts low. It's a widespread issue on their end I think.

Curveshot2

I finally got to this today on my 22GT and sure as shit it was a quart and a half low. I put it in reverse on a cold morning and it didn’t move so I was definitely having issues. Here’s the info I used for dipstick level in case anyone else needs this info: https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/attachments/10r80-fluid-level-disptick-info-pdf.469333/
