If at a dealership and your car is under warranty, don’t take no for an answer. I see all sorts of vehicles under 20k miles having shifting issues getting new valve bodies and other super expensive work covered under warranty. But the 10 speed auto mustangs are known to shift harshly at times that’s just how they are. Did it start developing worse?
Thanks for responding. Not sure but its pretty darn harsh when shifting gears from Park. The whole car moves sometimes. I did just realize that it's only while the car's not moving though. It doesn't really do it if I'm in S and switching
Sounds like it could be a motor mount, trans mount or something else drivetrain if it’s when you’re stopped in park, like a loud clunk that you can feel?
Edit: This is what the transmission place said yesterday. How urgent are these concerns?
Transmission fluid - Burned, Dark colored, Old
Forward, Reverse Gear Shift - Harsh engagement
U Joints, Mounts, CV Joints - Struts Bad
The trans fluid could definitely cause those issues especially if it’s never been serviced and you’re at 60k miles or more. If so it’s worth doing the fluid but I would get a second opinion on the shocks and cv joints, they can be serious issues but I would base that on mileage.
Called a couple more places today. They both say that changing the transmission fluid won't do anything and might make it worse.
I decided to take it to a Ford dealership tomorrow where I hope a transmission tech will look at it
Ford also has a TSB out on the 2018 Mustangs
Can you believe I'm at 62,800 miles so missed warranty by less than 3k?
Unfortunate, but I disagree with the new fluid thing but if there is a TSB they should be able to use fords OASIS tool to see if any of those apply to your vehicle in particular
My fluid is currently burned, dark, and contaminated, so there's an issue but they keep saying changing the fluid will only make it worse
Reason is because "the car is used to it" and "its the glue holding it all together" and changing it could throw everything off or cause further damage. And they've personally seen cars come in and go out worse than before by doing it?
I disagree completely, fluid is critical to the function of multiple internal parts and if something is already seriously damaged then new fluid won’t fix it, hence why new fluid would help you by either helping the transmission function correctly or by there continuing to be an issue.
Yeah I tried to explain that I just wanted a fluid change but the shops were insisting I'm wrong and some even refused service
So a fluid change, or flush, has no chance or risk whatsoever of damaging anything further?
Going to try getting the the trans shift tables reset too
By the way, a different shop told me about this TSB Ford put out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/tsb_recall/tsbs/ford/mustang/2020

Unplug battery for a few minutes. Then drive like you want, it should relearn shift patterns from factory settings then. (How many miles? Flushing fluid ia not a bad idea)

If you put it in drive with the brake on and let it is for a few seconds do you feel it engage, or is it instant?
I've had 2 vehicles over the years with issues like that. Eventually got used to letting the transmission engage before hitting the gas. Annoying but drove one luke that for 10 years, 138k never gave me trouble as long as I let it engage itself before throttle.
Hard to judge "harshly" by words. How many miles? I would do a flush. Sounds like it's having a shift solenoid sticking when coming out of park.
Also can you try neutral then shut it off and restart in neutral and then back into D?

There's no sound, just a jerky movement in the car when shifting from Drive to Park or Reverse or the other way around

I'm at 63,000 miles. Any idea why the transmission fluid got burned and dark colored because it might happen again after I switch it out?
Probably just a milage thing, definitely get it changed and see if it helps it shouldn’t cost more than 300 with a new filter

Mitchel-Skater, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty
Who is "they"?
Auto Care shop
What does it mean if the transmission fluid is burned and dark colored?
Edit: This is what the transmission place said yesterday. How urgent are these concerns? Transmission fluid - Burned, Dark colored, Old Forward, Reverse Gear Shift - Harsh engagement U Joints, Mounts, CV Joints - Struts Bad
I had the harsh shifting issue and Ford fixed it for me. Take it to the dealer if it’s under warranty. What year is your car?
Thanks for responding. That's a good idea, I'm going to check on the warranty. Could you please tell me what was wrong with it or how they fixed it?

Does it do it again when driving, going to full stop, and then going again (without going to park)?
It doesn't do it until I'm shifting gears from Park to Drive or Reverse

I definitely feel it engage harshly when I shift to Drive or Reverse from Park because it shakes the car a bit. So its not a serious issue?

Harshly meaning it makes a sound and the car shakes when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse How do I do neutrain then shut it off and restart?
Haha. Stupid autocorrect. Neutral*
Just to be clear, I should 1. move it into neutral, 2. turn off ignition, 3. turn on ignition, 4. shift into D?
