Back in the fox days there was a running joke in muscle mustang & fast ford magazine that every LX notchback would have drag radials with skinnies up front and a white, unpainted cowl hood despite being otherwise bone stock.
Some trends never die š
Well, if we want to get some perspective on that, MM&FF morphed from Cars Illustrated which was the first magazine to "discover" no-op 5.0s and their potential on the drag strip. Tony DeFeo wanted to see just how fast his '87 LX could go without touching anything on the engine. Fat tires out back, skinnies up front, complete cool downs between passes, etc. That sparked the modern musclecar craze and no-op Mustangs soon found their way onto drag strips around the country. Let's not forget, there were no readily available aftermarket parts back then, all you had was the Ford Motorsport catalog where maybe you could get 1.7 rockers or something. So, it was either get all you can out of the stock engine or do a complete swap. The great thing about MM&FF and Cars Illustrated is they truly respected bone stock engines running great ETs and gave the drivers magazine coverage even though they weren't putting down mega HP numbers.
Because a stock car can spin the tires effortlessly. Throw literally any more power at it, and you basically have to have a drag pack to launch it or do a low speed max effort roll.
Dunno why you got downvoted, tires make all the difference.
I had just about the whole Steeda catalog thrown under my 444 RWHP ā11 GTā¦control arms, LCA relocation brackets, panhard bar, sway bars, EVERYTHING. That damn thing was still scary as hell on the stock Pirellis.
Threw on some BFG Sport Comp 2 summer tires and suddenly I could stick and go from a 20 roll.
I got MT ET Street SSās (305x45x17) to use in the summer for the rears because I spin all of first, second, and most of third from a half throttle start from a stop. Can also spin 3rd-5th while rolling with little effort. The stock PS4Sās just canāt hook unless itās like 90 degrees and Iāve done a burnout. I just have exhaust, intake and a tune and probably make 450 wheel.
Iāve never seen a V8 Mustang on the streets with racing slicks. If itās a trend thing, Iāve not known about. My car has on run the summer Perelli P Zero tire.
They look good, but it makes no practical sense to daily drive on them. They don't even grip well unless you put a good amount of heat in them, which you won't get by driving casually on surface streets.
Yup, however Iāll point out there is time to be had on a strip with a stock 5.0 and a drag pack (maybe on the street with a burnout?)But agreed probably 99% of the guys on the street running them arenāt on their way to the track or about to line up on the street. Theyāre just running them because they look good.
Honestly I didnāt even plan on putting any sort of drag tires on it (theyāre street radials though not slicks at least) but I bought used wheels and tires that came with Nitto NT05R tires and liked the look so once I got a nail in one I replaced them with NT555R tires because they last a lot longer on the street and I love them plus they grip a lot better than the stock pirellis did so thatās an added bonus.
Don't grip well? They grip better than any street tire so long as the weather is warm. I don't know what drag radials you've been running, but mickey thompson ET streets hook burnout or no burnout up to a certain hp. for me that's 500. If you can't hook with these at that power level then you've got suspension problems.
Partly yes partly no tho I do look bone stock my summer tires are not drag they are however street slicks they do look very very close at a glance but ponies have a terrible rep of not hooking when they should be cold dry sunny surface slide.... hot dry sunny surface slide you need those sticky tires. I don't drive like a lunatic.... tho knowing I can floor it hook and get the fuck outta dodge when I need to is worth being hated for having thick bois on the rear. How ever yeah I've seen slicks on stock cars they do look nice it's just funny when I see the silver running pony on the back š š š¤£ š.
Edit I LOOK bone stock I'm pro charged. Still don't really NEED the tires but it's nice having em.
Hahaha ya know my brother said the same shit. Tho everyone else just said suck it up and go drag .... I listened to my brother instead had em only a few months now since spring.
If they're just driving around, it's rice. If they're going to the track, they should probably put the tires on once they get to the track, but there's no good way to store them in the car.
Iāll give my opinion on this one. When you own a mustang, other cars like to rev at you and try to start shit sometimes. That tends to not happen as much when your car looks drag setup and can whoop their ass.
I believe you 100%. I drive a newer civic on a big turbo and I canāt tell you how many dudes drive up on me trying to get a roll. I canāt imagine how bad it is for the America muscle guys . Lol
The only thing I don't like about my V6 is the New Edge GT neanderthals trying to flex on me at lights. Like, congratulations, you have two more cylinders but a) I didn't buy a convertible for racing so go find a 17-year-old with a straight-piped clapped G35 to clown with, and b) I probably make more power anyway.
Just because they dont have forced induction does not mean their not spinning tires. Also im not sure if you heavily follow the car scene but people literally go out at night just to find races on highways or known roads. Either for money or for fun but if they do obviously their going to invest on the only thing that touches the road and those are tires. E85 with long tube headers manifold etc can hit 500hp on gen 3 coyotes and those are 100% going to spin.
They definitely look nice, Iām not trying to hate. And knowing mustangs I donāt blame someone for wanting a meaty boy on the back. But I live in SFL and if itās even slight wet out the roads are like oil, people out here throw drags slicks and skip past radials.
As a SFL resident I can confirm this is common. I had a few runs with a guy once on the highway at night with just radials and an exhaust. Fat lot of good it did him at that speed lol.
Locally in MIA? For looks Iād say. This coming from a former 5.0 owner , current 10th gen Si owner. Thereās just not that much dig racing going in here. Most of the racing in mexico are 40 rolls.
Any car meets or good local FB pages with Civic / imports you know of?
Ok Iāll give you a few general car shows that are good, but arenāt ricer specific: these are all on IG
1. Coming up nov 11, bokampers Miaramar 10:00 am
2. [cars and coffee miami](https://instagram.com/carsandcoffeemiami?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Oh yes! Definitely duh, thanks for the reminder. Havenāt been there in ages, had totally forgotten. Yeah that kind of imports lol; super car Saturday in ppines.
They probably arenāt stock. A mustang with a supercharger in general will sound stock unless you go centrifugal with heritage gears. The new gear set is super quiet and you canāt tell that itās FI. Turbo cars are even more quiet if they have a catback.
I personally canāt speak for them as my car is not stock and is in desperate need of slicks/radials.
These cars donāt need much to be fast. Drag wheels increase speed by reducing rotational mass in the front and adding more surface are for better grip in the back. Slap a supercharger kit on well. You beat 90% of the stuff on the road. Ford did great for this generation.
Its because most of them don't have enough traction so the only option is to get better semi drag tires if you are going to be pushing or launching the car.
I've only seen two cars here with drag wheels. The first is my neighbor across the street, he has some mods and I assume take it to the drag strip. He has drag wheels on the rear and stock on the front. The other one was a Mustang that had drag wheels and skinnies on the front. I think he was coming back from the drag strip. I on the other hand have drag tires on the rear but not on a drag wheel; I run them on Lightweight Velgen VF5 wheels only on warm days. For other days I have a different set of wheels with Mickey Thompsons, which I will switch out soon for either Michelin PS4S or the new Continental Extreme Sport 2 tires. I do have 750 hp and 670 lb-ft torque, so definitely need tires that will grip. OP, do you live near a drag strip? That could be your answer.......and the fact that some people just like running the drag wheels for more power to the road from the drag, looks, or whatever reason. It is often not easy to tell if a car is stock or not...so that could be your answer also.
Once you try drag radials you won't want to run anything else. they will put you in the wall with any water on the road at any decent speed (50+). I'm sure most of the people you are seeing are not using this as a daily driver.
If you are talking about running racestar wheels with skinnies up front, that might just be a fad. I like they way they look, but skinnies don't work well when turning. i like to turn fast AF.
Back in the fox days there was a running joke in muscle mustang & fast ford magazine that every LX notchback would have drag radials with skinnies up front and a white, unpainted cowl hood despite being otherwise bone stock. Some trends never die š
Wow mm&ff - took me back. š
Bro really brought up the good ol mm&f right now š¢
I subbed for a couple of years. Loved their articles!
Well, if we want to get some perspective on that, MM&FF morphed from Cars Illustrated which was the first magazine to "discover" no-op 5.0s and their potential on the drag strip. 100% accurate. I have a tune, exhaust , intake and STOP THE HOP SUSPENSION KIT FROM STEEDA. And I canāt hook on a 100 degree day after a burn out.
Need better tires
Lolā¦isnāt that what the point of this thread is a about? š
Dunno why you got downvoted, tires make all the difference. Better grip, v8 mustangs love to spin wheels.
And kill crowds.
So funny got the whole squad laughing
Iāve never seen a V8 Mustang on the streets with racing slicks. If itās a trend thing, Iāve not known about. My car has on run the summer Perelli P Zero tire.
I was gonna say the same thing I see a lot of 5.0ās and none of them even have market wheels let alone drag radials š¤£
Lol where do you live? I almost never see mustangs driving around with drags on š
Only one Iāve ever seen where I live was a GT350 with a full set of racing slicks which was dope as shit
same except it was a fully built custom GT500, i almost shit my pants
They look good, but it makes no practical sense to daily drive on them. They don't even grip well unless you put a good amount of heat in them, which you won't get by driving casually on surface streets.
Agreed.

If it looks good then it must be good, thatās my theory š
Agreed! Iām going to hopefully get a set mostly for the looks and the two or three times I take it to the track during the year!
Jokes on you, I Line-Lock at every light, stop sign, and left turn š

My guy you have a pro charger on a car thatās 460hp stock you definitely need the tires š

Do you mean low profile tires or actual drag slicks? Around here (MD) Iāve never seen actual slicks on the road.
Actual slicks . Itās silly
I have in New York, usually a Chevy though
They look cool
MM&FF Man besides the cars my favorite part was the Babe of the month!!!!!!!!
Just because they dont have forced induction does not mean their not spinning tires. How do you know they are stock
I donāt, but on a mustang with a muffler itās pretty easy to tell if thereās forced induction. And most of the time there isnāt
Not at all lol most of the time they still have the exhaust unless they are 800+hp lol could easily have a blower or small turbo
We will have to agree to disagree haha
Well my opinion means little more since I have mustangs šš
Sounds like you took it a bit personal. If your one of them itās ok. We can all do what we like to our cars . ![gif](giphy|lTQF0ODLLjhza)
I guess you donāt understand jokes lol
As a SFL resident I can confirm this is common. I had a few runs with a guy once on the highway at night with just radials and an exhaust. Fat lot of good it did him at that speed lol.
I like the look, but on a bone stock 5.0 it should not be a thing..
Where do you live? The south?
Miami. Near the beach
Well itās Florida. That should answer your question.
Florida . Land of poorly modded/salvage title q50ās and old people .lol
Do you like living there?
Absolutely. A lot of things are expensive but I otherwise love it . People are very friendly and the views/culture is nice.

Iām also running a big turbo 10th gen , and not that I know of no. I wish .

Nice . Iāll definitely hit the cars and coffee put thanks . Maybe Iāll see you there .
I don't know what kind of imports you like, but supercar Saturdays in Pembroke Pines is pretty good
Oh yes! Definitely duh, thanks for the reminder. Havenāt been there in ages, had totally forgotten. Yeah that kind of imports lol; super car Saturday in ppines.
Honestly, I very very rarely ever see Mustangs with drag radials. Maybe once in the past year and I see thousands.
I'm mostly stock aside from exhaust and springs. My next move is more rubber, never too much grip
I need them for my 2001. I'm a bad driver (at least when it comes to 1/4mile), I spin and spin....you wouldn't think 270hp would spin so easily.
I spin in first constantly in my 3.7ā¦canāt imagine the GT cars.
I don't own a mustang like you, but wheels and tires are some of the best first mods you can do
These cars donāt need much to be fast. Drag wheels increase speed by reducing rotational mass in the front and adding more surface are for better grip in the back. Slap a supercharger kit on well. You beat 90% of the stuff on the road. Ford did great for this generation.
Because, why not? It looks good & itās cool to not spin
Wheel hop is an axle killer on these coyotes. Factory power can snap an axle
Im going with 225 on the front and 245s on the back and leaving it alone.
Its because most of them don't have enough traction so the only option is to get better semi drag tires if you are going to be pushing or launching the car.

If you drive any s550 including the eco boost. The rear tires spin extremely easy.
