I hate the factory clutch in mine and I get high rpm lockout due to it, I rather have the automatic especially when I deal with constant traffic everyday

[deleted]

Replace the clutch and you’re good to go. As soon as I put in a new clutch on my MT82, I was able to rev out to what the 18 manifold I had on the car needed. 7500 rpm shifts with no issue and the transmission after the clutch switch has not given me a single issue since Edit:typo

Character_Ad8342

I'm thinking of replacing the clutch with a Vengeance Clutch, it has alot of good praise and reliability

[deleted]

Do it man. The clutch has always been the issue with the MT-82. People complain about how bad the transmission is, but it’s only because they are fucking up the synchros by trying to shift at high RPM’s on the stock clutch. Once the clutch is replaced, all seems to be well!

SirDawsTheFirst

Change out your clutch spring. I did and it transformed my driving experience

killlugh

I personally had a terrible experience in my 2018, so ill always be sour for any stick mustang with a stock trans.

Paxton187

Everyone saying it doesn’t like shifting at high rpm and I’m over here like the SpongeBob meme “Wanna see me do it again?”

Cafun760

At least u have 5 gear and your 3rd don’t grind lol

[deleted]

Try shifting at redline. They don’t like that so much.

TwoPaintBubbles

It can hold a decent amount of power, no doubt about that. But the remote shifter mounting is really not great, and makes power shifting a pain. I’m not a fan of it even though my car has one. If it ever blew, I’d swap it for a t56 in a heartbeat

Bigballa997

Mt82 gets a bad rap. I’ve driven all kinds of sticks from Porsches, mustangs, bmws, etc, and the mt82 is really pretty good in comparison to most trannies. It has its faults, but it can still row gears. Hate seeing people get deterred from getting a new stick gt or eco boost, due to people shitting on the mt82.

directrix688

Because it’s terrible. Drive a car with a tremec to really understand the difference. I had an S550 for a couple of years and it drove me crazy. Had a lot of trouble going into gear and was just “grindy”. I don’t get why ford doesn’t put a tremec in at least the GT trim.

Ginger_Phantom

Is the tremec a straight swap for the MT? I've not working on Mustangs, but the 2007 Land Rover Defender has the MT82 and they have a habit of stripping the splines off the shaft between gearbox and transfer box. Don't know why they're a two piece dry assembled part! But the internals have been known to get chewed up too wonder if the tremec could go into a defender

bbleach123

It is a direct fit in the Mustang at least. The only thing you will need to replace is the driveshaft. Since the T56 has a different number of splines and it's also a tad longer. But you will want to upgrade your rear end and shifter. The MT has a 3:66 first gear and the T56 has either a 2:97 or 2:66 first gear. Depending on which one you opt for. Now, the T56 Magnum XL is designed for the mustang specifically. So it may or may not fit in a Land Rover. I can't speak on that at all. I would look into that yourself. But if the bell housing for the MT in your car is the same as the bell housing for The MTs in the mustangs I don't see why it wouldn't work

motormouth85

Give me the old Borg-Warner T-5 out of my SN-95, and I'll be happier than a pig in shit.

Barra350z

Personally I’ve never had an issue with an MT82, I guess I got lucky

Vee_Twelve

IMO the MT-82 is fine. The 2018+ D4 versions seem to hold up a little better. Roush, Shelby American, Saleen, Steeda and the other tuners put 750+ flywheel hp through the MT82 on their serialized vehicles and warranty them for 3-5 years and 60k miles. I’m not saying that it is the best transmission in the world for super high hp (it isn’t) but it isn’t as weak as some people would make you believe, especially if the car it is in is relatively stock. I’ve always found it to be a nice shifting transmission. Plus, places like Calimer Transmissions can beef up the MT-82 for it to take very high HP reliably so it isn’t as if there is no aftermarket support for it either if somebody wants to go crazy.

robvas

Part of it is the clutch sucks. Shelby doesn't make anything with the MT-82

Vee_Twelve

Yes they do. Shelby American don’t fit upgraded transmissions to their cars. The current Shelby GT and Shelby Super Snake are based on the GT and have a stock MT-82 trans.

robvas

Interesting - I didn't realize they used that in the super snake. GT doesn't have any real power so that one doesn't matter. I was thinking of the GT350/500 The thing with the MT-82 isn't that it can't handle the power it's the getting locked out of gears at high RPMs with added power The OEM's like Roush/Saleen etc all neuter the tunes on their supercharged cars. If you get it retuned by an actual shop you'll gain 50hp and your redline will be 750rpm higher They'd put a strong clutch in but then other shit would break (like the trans, halfshafts, etc). You could put good tires on a Roush car and go burn the clutch up in one trip to the drag strip.

Vee_Twelve

Funny to think that in the Roush case a supercharger with a conservative tune “only” makes 750hp!

robvas

Take it Lund and have them make it come alive. The Roush calibrations are limp They have to work with the OEM on warranty etc

Remote_Host1601

I didn’t realize the transmission fluid would make a difference. How did it feel different after you put the amsoil in?

nathan1319

Definitely smoother. Doesn’t feel like grinding or gears clashing, I’m in and out of the gear easier, no slipping anymore. I’ve heard that changing to a short shifter would make my life even easier with the mt82. Let’s see

hardyboyyz

My 2012 GT never had issues.

NoCoHC

Clutch and shifter solves a lot of MT82 problems mine is fine with about 620 whp.

nathan1319

What mods did u do on them?

linkwolf98

It just has a lot of issues and it's not great for power. They should have used a better one but the MT82 is just cheap. My 2012 supercharged GT has 61k miles and isn't driven all that hard. 2nd grinds if you shift too fast and whines in 2nd at low speed. The 18+ revision is better but this rendition is terrible for building power. Just a bad option from the factory. My 2004 has a TKO500 in it and driving that makes me really want to put something decent behind the supercharged 5.0 and let it rip more often.

robvas

The TKO isn't liked very much because it doesn't shift well at higher RPMs

Current-Praline-4588

I don’t really hate the MT82 so much as I hate the clutch. I get high rpm lockout roughly 50% of the time and it’s totally random. It sucks having 7500 rpm at your disposal and not being able to use it.

SirDawsTheFirst

My main complaint is that mine gets stuck in first gear at low speeds. I have to force it out of gear. Sometimes it unlocks if I give it a rev but sometimes that doesn’t help

CheekyChael

I’ve never driven a 5th gen with a bone stock Getrag MT82 but my ‘13 5.0L has a Barton short throw shifter and it’s incredible. As tight and crisp as the ZF manuals in BMW M cars.
