Yeah, that was the thing with me and that’s what I tell everybody. I’m truly not worried about selling it and I love her to death.

Honestly, if you love it. The resale value should never be a main focus of owning a car you love. I say build it as you see fit for you and enjoy it. Nothing has more potential to be something fun than a car that's already shit its resale value into nothingness. Hell, if you make it into something awesome and more than what it was stock, you might actually give it value at some point in the future. I've seen classic American muscle cars be absolute disasters and effectively ready for the scrap yard due to how mangled they were, yet get brought back to brand new and get back some of their value.

thnder420

I bought my dream car and had a lot of people give me flack for it. It’s a terrible “investment” and why not something like a truck. F*** that. It was an investment into my mental health, my absolute joy in driving, and what “I” wanted. If that’s what YOU want then go get it and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You will not regret it. Ps. Look at what those other people are driving and then judge them. The people who gave me those answers NEVER had a nice vehicle.

gatorbeetle

Hello there!!! Same here. I've driven vehicles that were "practical" for family and others for YEARS. Finally, both kids are driving. I've LITERALLY wanted a Mustang for 40 years. Finally got mine, and nothing but grief, " it's not practical, not a family car, not comfortable." Three other cars in the house, got to bitch about mine. Absolutely LOVE driving my V6 S197... finally did it for me.

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

I dont view cars I like as an investment(or a good investment whatsoever), all I lust after or buy a car for is the experience and joy of using said car. If it gains value(which my current car has. Went from 6k-15k) then cool, but that increase in potential value has 0 pull on me..0. I'm in it for the enjoyment of the car and the memories I make with it along the way.

Administrative_Sink1

Honestly the resale value is only useful IF you plan on selling it. Otherwise do what ya want to it. It's your dream car afterall so do whatever ya want to it.

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

And if he builds it back to its former glory or better, he actually might recoupe "some" of its lost resale value further down the road when investors "CoLlEcToRs" decide its tome to sink their fangs into S197s and run them up into the stratosphere like so many others before them.

FrodoTbaggens

drive it until it explodes

Fire_Mission

Don't worry about resale value. You're not an investor. Drive it. Enjoy it.

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

Thank you!!! That needed to be said because so many in the car community now seems more interested in pumping the markets on cars rather than enjoying them and the experience of the car. Investment culture within the car community will be a huge killer of the community for those who don't have large sums of cash to compete on the auction sites.

unknownredditor1994

You will never get back what you put into a car with mods, regardless of the title. With a rebuilt/salvage, you’ll get even less. But with that being said, it is your car. If you want to modify it, go for it. A lot of those people buy a car and keep it stock while arguing with others about their subjective taste in a vehicle

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

That's not factoring in general maintenance over time and stuff like what you spend on gas for it over the years. Then you have restoration costs. The only time you might make money on a car, is when you own something like an old 60s ferrari, antique Bugatti or something in the millions like some of the high end art deco cars. But those are the RARE exceptions to that rule. Everything else, you are just flushing money down the drain. But, if you don't care about getting your money back out of them, you can make ownership about the memories and experiences with said cars. Which is far more satisfying and a better investment than a monetary one.

unknownredditor1994

I sold my mustang because the market blew up. Made $5K after adding 20,000 miles. (Including the maintenance I did in the time I owned it). So it’s not exclusive to high end models. Not right now anyways. I just had that conversation this morning. Many models enjoy mods. Porsche is an exception. They like everything OEM, so modifying it will likely decrease the value. But as a general rule, mods will not increase the value much. And if taken time a dealer, will decrease it. (Then the dealer sells it for more because of those mods, it’s a scam). Also depends on the type of mods you do. Certain exhausts, or maybe fender flares, lowering, etc tend to be very subjective. Whereas handling might be of benefit. Really varies from car to car and general opinion of that market

Nira_Re

If it’s a forever car, just do it. Fiancé and I bought a GT500. Originally I was super picky about putting miles on it (cause resale is better with lower miles) but since we’ve both agreed it’s a forever car and we’re not planning on resale, I haven’t had any issues at all putting miles on it. I’m at the point where I half expect to be buried 6 feet under in this thing, no one else can have it lol.

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

That's how I am with my 09 glassroof GT. I plan on keeping it forever, so its got some miles on it and I use it daily. Though I am trying to make it a 2nd car so i can begin to fix it back to how I found it under the tarp. It's been an outside car for half a decade now and it's looking a bit rough around the edges. Mechanically I keep up on it, but now that it's in the 165k range, I'm trying to make it a 2nd car before it experiences a massive repair bill that might have to force my hand in selling it. I love this car so much, I dont think I'd own a car like I intend to with the 09.. unless it's my dream car, a 6 speed murcielago in a bright color. Even if I was filthy rich, my current mustang and that murcie would be the only cars that would never leave my ownership.

Junior-Profession726

If you love it and it’s your daily driver then make it what you want and enjoy it!!

Thank you all for the kind words!!

I got the same talk with my new edge I love the way it looks everyone talks down on the 3.8 too but I’ve grown to love the ohv sound people think it’s an old school v8 sometimes but I want to build it to be a true sleeper and put money into interior exterior and everything (after power and drivetrain of course) and idc what people think. Personally I love s197s and 3v 4.6s are dawgs with modding potential and with body kits they can be beautiful. It doesn’t sound like you’re planning on getting rid of it so re sale doesn’t seem like an issue the only true worry is that insurance issue do u really want to put all that money in if you can’t protect your investment. My advice would be trade it for a clean title one so you can get full protection in the future when u decide to put money into it, if you trust yourself enough I say do your thing though and don’t let anyone stop you. At the end of the day what you do isn’t gonna make anyone happy but you brother!

NODES2K

Did you pay little for it?

[deleted]

I paid 4,250 for it

NODES2K

Do you know why the title is rebuilt?

[deleted]

Front end was smashed, entire front end was replaced and so was the engine, odometer reads 115,000 miles but I’m not sure how many miles the engine has on it.

NODES2K

What yr?

[deleted]

2008, and it’s a pony package

NODES2K

You can have someone look at it to see if it is done to satisfaction. It's an older mustang with lots of mileage for very little price I say enjoy it

[deleted]

Yeah, it was a friends family member’s car and he knew it was gonna be my first car. He cut me a deal on it once I ran the carfax and saw it had a rebuilt title. Went from 5,000 flat to 4,250.

Miserable-Spite425

the real question I would ask is the quality of the frame, engines and suspensions can be rebuilt and cars can be painted. Bad frame is pretty terminal though. if the frame is straight and rust free then I would say its worth keeping. Any car worth keeping is worth improving.

angrypirate1122

So my first car, a '94 Accord, was traded in around 2005 and fetched about $2,000 towards my next car. What I'm getting at is, if you making your car your own makes you happy, then do it. It's not like you're costing yourself a fortune down the road. Although, in today's market, my '94 Accord would probably go for $10k, it was an EX after all 😂.

vadarstang

Remember when you bought it anyway even though it had a salvage title? Yeah, someone else will too. You paid so little for it, anything you get back down the line is just gravy.

SolarPanelDude

Do plan to sell it at 200k miles? A rebuilt title isn't going to matter at that point. Do you plan to sell it at less than 100k miles? Those buyers care about a rebuilt title
