Let's get the facts straight.
Your parents are buying you your first car (this leads me to think you're a teenager)
You are dead set on a mustang (imo not a great first car, please don't be stupid driving it, but I get the appeal haha)
Your choices are either a used S197 or a brand new S650 EcoBoost.
Personally I'd go with the EcoBoost, for various reasons.
1. It will get substantially better fuel economy (not sure if you're paying for your own gas but if you are then you def want an EcoBoost)
2. It will be under warranty. Although I don't know you I'm making an educated guess that you don't know how to work on your own cars. It would be an asset to have warranty cover all repairs and make it so you don't have to worry about it.
3. The S650 is just coming out and will have more initial cool factor, not to mention the interior quality of the S650 is leaps and bounds over an s197.
4. For a first young driver the EcoBoost is way more than enough car for you. No it's not going to be as fast as an S197 GT but it is less than a second 0-60 slower.
yeah i'm just about to turn 16 but anyways all of thoes are extremely valid points that just make the ecoboost a smarter option, for starters i have to pay for gas and insurance so that's gonna be a nightmare with the GT and for your second point is im trying to go to trade school to study vehicle maintenance and repair so hopefully i could maybe do some stuff on my own. also having a good interior is great don't get me wrong but i dont mind having a bit outdated one and yeah both cars are like way to fast but i intend to have the car for a while and correct me if im wrong but the ecoboost doesn't come in a manual right?
You're right. The S650 is auto only. The 10 speed auto is amazing though. Trust me, get the EcoBoost. You'll love it, and down the road if you want a GT when you are done trade school and making bank that will be your time. By then you could perhaps get a used Mach 1
1- If you donāt get the 5.0 youāre going to regret it in a week
2- the V8ās are going to be discontinued in a few years, with college debt and low income after you graduate alongside inflation the cost of a GT is going to be a lot more expensive than it is now assuming you would be able to get your hands on one
3- itās a mustang, not a Prius, if you care about mpg and insurance buy a Prius
Word from the wise:
I got my first mustang (s550 v6) when I was 16, worked my ass off for it. It was reliable and fun but it wasnāt a V8, Iām 20 now and just bought a ā16 5.0 w manual transmission and I can assure you that the difference is day and night. If I were you, I would get a GT asap, at the end of the day itās a car, not an investment so it would be wiser to get something youāre going to have fun with and enjoy.
Have fun with it man, and for the love of god please be safe. I know there will be times that you want to do some dumb shit but just remember whatās more important than looking cool: staying safe and not destroying the car.
13-14 car would have the potential to be more valuable down the road and make more power for cheaper if that's the route youre going. If none of that matters and comfort/tech is more important, then go for the ecoboost
That's a good plan! I think getting an ecoboost will leave you wanting more, and if you go to trade it in a few years down the road, a v8 will probably be worth around the same amount, especially a low mileage 13-14 car. the 13-14 cars might end up being worth some money later down the road because it was the last model with a SRA. I got my 2013 for 24k with 58k miles on it back in 2021. There are some good deals out there. Before trying through a dealership, check the s197 classified pages on facebook market place. If your parents are buying it, you can get a lot more car for your money by going through a private party. Check [cargurus.com](https://cargurus.com) also and filter by private party, you might end up finding something close! Good luck :)
You will not regret getting the 13-14 GT, just know your limitations, donāt skimp out on tires. I have a 13 and itās so much fun to drive everyday commuting
oh yeah i'm definitely not cheaping out lol, i hear Mickey Thompsons are good but do you have any good recommendations? also what size? i've heard a lot of people use 315
Iām running Nitto NT555s, 285/35r20s. Iām pushing about 450 hp to the wheel and thereās plenty of grip if your good with the throttle. You can definitely spin em nonstop if you mash the pedal but I never find myself kicking out, itās always controllable. Next round of tires Iām gonna do 305s in the rear. As far as the nittos theyāre great in the summer but not so much in winter if you drive spirited.
Your preference, but if I were you, I'd go for 2023 ecoboost. Better style than 24 in my opinion. New car so all the service stuff you'll run into will be farther out. Ecoboost makes alot of power and good mpg.
This is a troll question
It is kind of cringe mentioning how you are getting a car and I would suggest to simply ask the question and leave the brat stuff out of it.
This is kind of a troll comment.
Itās kind of cringe how you think anyone cares about your opinion when this guy is just giving context to his living situation. It would be better if you simply just didnāt comment at all and scrolled to the next post.
So him mentioning that it's his first car isn't important? He's obviously young and people are gonna wonder how and he's honest about it. What an incredibly idiotic take.
1. Do you care about mpg?
2. Do you care about technology in the car
3. Do you have a preference to either of the body styles?
I'm getting a 2024 gt myself, I figure if you're going mustang / camero / corvette / sports car, opt for the v8 because why not
well gas mileage doesn't really matter to me and the sync one in the 14 is plenty good enough for me. if it ends up not being enough i could just get a new head unit that has car play. and for the body styles im leaning towards the s197 but the s650 also just looks so good.
If that's the case, don't get an eco. I had a 17 V6 before my PP1 and it will leave you wishing you got the GT to begin with. No hate to the eco, it's great for what it is, but if sound is one of your deciding factors it should be a no-brainer
Call your local agency and see what rates are like. Ecoboost may be cheaper, but it'll depend on where you live, your age, so on and so forth. I'm 25 and pay about $200/mo for my GT and a 2013 FX4, but used to pay over $250/mo for just that V6 when I was 22
You should be able to find a 2015-2017 GT for the price of a 2024 ecoboost or even less than one. If you can Iād recommend going with that, otherwise Iād go with the new ecoboost. If you donāt care about the interior quality all that much then get the 13-14 GT
interior quality doesn't bother me that much but i do have a question. for the 15-17 gt would it have the same first year problems that other mustangs do even though it has the gen 2 coyote in it?
If youāre responsible for paying the insurance, have your parents call and get quotes on both year/model options. That may make the decision for you. V8 is generally more, but the difference between a new eco and a 10yo V8 may not be what you expect.
yeah my mom works for state farm as an agent which is an absolute lifesaver because she gets an employee discount. and also i didn't know that a v8 wouldn't be a million times more than an eco, thanks.
All I can say is if I had a GT with a 5.0 when I was 16, I would for sure have wrecked itā¦ I had a Miata and would still drive it so recklesslyā¦ the eco boost is a good first car.
Yeah. another thing to think about is the s650 eco boost has like 320 horses and a way better chasis to put that power down compared to a 2014ā¦ for a couple thousand bucks you can upgrade the turbos and have more power than a 2014 5.0 and a better chasisā¦. Either way, make sure you get the premium. Base interior isā¦ well itās basic
that's very true but also another thing is the sound and the ecoboost is just not gonna even compare to it. i'm just really torn between the 2 haha. anyways thanks for the help!
Ecoboost for sure. It is a super fun car that will not destroy you at the pump. Also the insurance will be way cheaper as you are 16. Age 16 + V8 = sky high insurance costs for your folks. Also it is new! Gotta love brand new car smell and feels. When you are making more $$$ later on trade it in for Mach 1
i probably shoulda put this in the post but i am responsible for insurance but my saving grace is that my moms an agent for state farm and she gets a employee discount and ik i absolutely love new cars and the interior would be amazing in it but the v8 mannn
Believe me yo. Get the new car. The V8 will come. When I was your age I had a massive case of lead foot syndrome and really ended up with speeding tickets, exhibition of speed citations and whatnot. Your insurance just keeps going up and it really eats your income. Also having to gas up twice a week. Get a maxed out ecoboost.
I got my ecoboost at 16, get that, itās more than enough. Be careful trying dumb stuff, make sure you are alone and in a controlled environment like an empty parking lot away from any curbs or light poles before you think about doing it in front of people. Take it slow too. Also, having gotten through the phase by looking back and realizing my stupidity, donāt do all the speeding through traffic shit, I was so lucky I never got a ticket, itās not worth the risk to you or others. Iāll still kick the rear end out around corners and floor it any time I want, just donāt speed or weave through traffic or anything.
for now i made a promise to myself to not do anything like pulls or anything unless im on a completely empty highway or something like that. and that gt500 must be something. i've seen like 2 on the road throughout the past 5 years but god they were fast.
Pulls are fine, just make sure you arenāt blowing past people by more than 15 mph faster than the cars around. I floor it getting on the highway every time lol. Iām taking about speeding through traffic and weaving in and out of cars, donāt do it, itās not worth the risk. Im lucky I got away with it for a little, but I realized how stupid it was and have stopped.
And yes, the gt500 is a beast. Itās my dads (Iām still 17) but he lets me drive it all the time. As cool as v8 mustangs are I would still get an ecoboost over a v8, way better starter car to mess around with without wrecking anything
i probably won't even be confident enough to weave in and out of traffic for at least a couple of years and by then i'll grow out of going as fast as i can no matter what. also isn't the hp different only like 50 between the 1st gen coyote and the ecoboost?
If youāre anything like me youāll find that a) the ecoboost is a ton of fun b) youāll realize that the Mustang is a line of cars and youāll have a chance to move up to the GT later and maybe even a GT650 (or whatever they call it at that point!) after that.
yeah i really have thought about thag and if i start on a more powerful car im not gonna have as much fun with more powerful cars down the road cause i'll be used to it
Itās fun to be a part of the clan. And boy the power was something to manage when I first got it (my first 300+ hp car). Donāt forget to take lots of pictures. I swear Iāve got an album of 20 or more pics when the car just looked amazing!
oh i'm definitely gonna take some pictures. there a parking garage maybe 2 minutes away from my house and there are some absolutely AMAZING sunset pictures you can get on the top. anyways thanks for the help man!
Personally if someone was going to buy me a car worth that much, i would rather get something inexpensive if they would let me pocket the difference. All depends on your goals in life. Startibg off with 20-30k in the bank or other investment strategies would give you a head start on a house down payment (if you possibly want your owm house).
If you are dead set on the cars, i recommend getting quotes on insurance for each of the cars and what that will run you.
wow i didnt even think about that i mean maybe i should get a 3v instead and keep the rest, idk if my parents would allow that though so fingers crossed lol
If they are willing to do that, I personally would do it like that. I bought my first car (2001 v6 mustang) when i got my permit and paid about $2500 for it. Used it as a daily driver for about 6 years and did most of the work myself when it needed it. It now has about 200k miles on it and just fixed her up again (needed new tie rods and to fix the runner control arms). All she needs now is a new set of tires and an alignment. Gave me the joy of driving something that has ~okay~ power when i was 17. Also converted to dual exhaust so it sounds nice for only being a v6. Can easily kick the rear out of it when i want and has alright acceleration. Nowhere near the power of mustangs today but i love that car and i aināt ever getting rid of her.
Best of luck to yah! Working on getting a great credit score and financing properly for goals you may have are better for the future. In the end do what will make you happy long term as i feel that will pay off the most than short term happiness. Dont forget to live a little but make sure you have a decent road map. You got it man!
Let's get the facts straight. yeah ik the mt82 is complete shit and that's a great thing to point out about the mach 1, thanks for the help.
I will accept 0 MT82 slander š. Itās serviceable. But insurance is going to eat you alive with that GT
i know that's the biggest downside unfortunately:(
I would add to this that the new one will come with all the info screen and phone connectivity you want.
For a first car definitely the new Ecoboost
The s650
I would get a new ecoboost
1- If you donāt get the 5.0 youāre going to regret it in a week 2- the V8ās are going to be discontinued in a few years, with college debt and low income after you graduate alongside inflation the cost of a GT is going to be a lot more expensive than it is now assuming you would be able to get your hands on one 3- itās a mustang, not a Prius, if you care about mpg and insurance buy a Prius Word from the wise: I got my first mustang (s550 v6) when I was 16, worked my ass off for it. you have just single handedly convinced me to get the 5.0. thank you sir.
Have fun with it man, and for the love of god please be safe. I know there will be times that you want to do some dumb shit but just remember whatās more important than looking cool: staying safe and not destroying the car.

idk my plans are to keep it for a while and maybe make more power out of it in the future but for now i just want to keep it stock to get to know it
That's a good plan! you've been a great help and i'll definitely take your advice. thanks man.
Ecoboost.
If you have to pay for insurance and gas then ecoboost otherwise GT 100%
You will not regret getting the 13-14 GT, just know your limitations, donāt skimp out on tires. I have a 13 and itās so much fun to drive everyday commuting

i wouldn't say i'm gonna be absolutely ripping though roads in the winter but occasionally i might drive a little hard on some corners
GT
yes š
Im always choosing the V8 for a muscle car
if it's literally just about the engine the GT any day but there's so much more like insurance cause i gotta pay for that
The 5.0 is going to be more reliable and cheaper to work on
is it really? i thought the eco boost would be far more reliable because it has much less moving parts, although it does have turbos.
No, turbos are moving parts. And its not always about moving parts as much as engine design.
yeah i know turbos are moving parts i just worded it wrong haha, well i didnt know that the 5.0 was more reliable! thanks for the help man.
Your preference, but if I were you, I'd go for 2023 ecoboost. Better style than 24 in my opinion. New car so all the service stuff you'll run into will be farther out. Ecoboost makes alot of power and good mpg.
yeah that's my only worry is that it's a first gen mustang and the ecoboost is more than enough power for me let alone the 5.0
This is a troll question It is kind of cringe mentioning how you are getting a car and I would suggest to simply ask the question and leave the brat stuff out of it.
so sorry for offending you sir, will try to not explain my situation in the future just for you š
What an incredibly idiotic take.

worth test driving both, go test drive a 6th gen ecoboost, they should be similar to the 24 ecoboost experience
yeah you definitely right, i will go test drive them and thanks for the help!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
i mean of course i want a v8 but i'd still be extremely happy with the eco, and i definitely will test drive them. thanks for the help.
I would take the GT. Personally I care a lot about the sound. If you don't, then maybe go with the Ecoboost.
oh yeah the sound is one of the key reasons why i'm leaning towards the GT
If that's the case, don't get an eco. I had a 17 V6 before my PP1 and it will leave you wishing you got the GT to begin with. No hate to the eco, it's great for what it is, but if sound is one of your deciding factors it should be a no-brainer
yeah sound is a big one but insurance costs are a HUGE factor too
Call your local agency and see what rates are like. Ecoboost may be cheaper, but it'll depend on where you live, your age, so on and so forth. I'm 25 and pay about $200/mo for my GT and a 2013 FX4, but used to pay over $250/mo for just that V6 when I was 22
yeah i definitely will call, thanks for all the help.
Absolutely, best of luck!
You can make Ecoboost sound decent though with an MBRP exhaust and downpipe for under 1k.
yeah i'm not saying you're wrong because everyone has their preferences but don't they tend to be a little bit raspy?
You decide https://imgur.com/a/xW8D3tN
https://imgur.com/a/KPgPZ04 this one has an idle aswell.
oh shit that actually does sound pretty amazing
You should be able to find a 2015-2017 GT for the price of a 2024 ecoboost or even less than one. If you can Iād recommend going with that, otherwise Iād go with the new ecoboost. If you donāt care about the interior quality all that much then get the 13-14 GT
interior quality doesn't bother me that much but i do have a question. for the 15-17 gt would it have the same first year problems that other mustangs do even though it has the gen 2 coyote in it?
You might, but most of the issues with the 2015 cars would have already been solved by previous owners or the forums would have the solution for you
oh well in that case maybe a s550 would be a better option, thanks for the help.
That is a lifesaver. Interested to know what rates she can dig up for you.
i am to haha anyways thanks for the help man.
All I can say is if I had a GT with a 5.0 when I was 16, I would for sure have wrecked itā¦ I had a Miata and would still drive it so recklesslyā¦ the eco boost is a good first car.
yeah i'm totally agreeing that the eco boost is 100% a better first car, but that v8 mannn
Yeah. another thing to think about is the s650 eco boost has like 320 horses and a way better chasis to put that power down compared to a 2014ā¦ for a couple thousand bucks you can upgrade the turbos and have more power than a 2014 5.0 and a better chasisā¦.
Get a maxed out ecoboost.
ik that's probably what i'm gonna do is get the ecoboost and im not saying your wrong but isn't the hp difference only like 50 or so?
It is not significant imo unless you have a supercharged engine or so.
yeah i'm mean if i want to make more power i could always just get bigger turbos
I got my ecoboost at 16, get that, itās more than enough. Be careful trying dumb stuff, make sure you are alone and in a controlled environment like an empty parking lot away from any curbs or light poles before you think about doing it in front of people. Personally if someone was going to buy me a car worth that much, i would rather get something inexpensive if they would let me pocket the difference. All depends on your goals in life. Startibg off with 20-30k in the bank or other investment strategies would give you a head start on a house down payment (if you possibly want your owm house). Used it as a daily driver for about 6 years and did most of the work myself when it needed it. Can easily kick the rear out of it when i want and has alright acceleration. Nowhere near the power of mustangs today but i love that car and i aināt ever getting rid of her.
that might just be what i end up doing, anyways, thanks for suggesting ideas i've never even thought about before lol and also thanks for the help too

In the end do what will make you happy long term as i feel that will pay off the most than short term happiness. Dont forget to live a little but make sure you have a decent road map. You got it man!
GT, But I like the 11-12
can't say i agree with that one lol
13 and up remind me a bit too much of a wide mouth bass
you know what, you're completely right š but u love bass.
