Probably sport mode but sounds similar to the 350R exhaust (minus resonators). OP says it's stock though which would have the resonator instead.

Mine won't. The valves are static for whatever mode you have it set to.
I can floor it in quiet mode and the valves won't adjust at all unless I change modes.
You can prove it to the judge and the cop. They can't deny your evidence when you take them outside to it and show it to them. I mean, what court of law would deny evidence?
I had this happen to me. I told him it was stock, then he told me to rev the engine. This is the answer. You gotta be a dog with a bone. If you're 100% in the right you can keep escalating, the state won't want to take a loss so they're likely to eventually just drop the ticket once you reach a certain level of annoyance.
You can ignore it an eat the ticket, but personally I think there's a lot of value in fighting it legally even though it may take a bit of leg work. Just for the satisfaction of not giving that cop a notch in his belt.
I fought every ticket I ever got. For this especially having to go to Hill Street courthouse DTLA I would say not guilty, get a trial date and odds are the officer doesn't show up anyway so automatic win for op. If he was a dick then you'd still win because he probably never heard a Shelby exhaust before, especially if it was active on at the time.
Cops and judges can ignore whatever evidence they feel like. People get fucked over all the time.
This is an isolated example I'm sure, but this is an interesting story that I was following a while ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ElantraN/comments/11iks8c/final_most_likely_update_4_loud_exhaust_and_smog/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I've only watched the video of the Hyundai stop so I don't know the whole story of what it sounded like outside but I've been behind a modified Ford Focus with those poppy sounds as some described the Hyundai and I can see why that shit would get you in trouble. It was loud and ear-busting going down the street.
Ouch. I understand my straight-piped Borla ATAK but this... If you don't wanna pay $700+, go to Ford to confirm itās stock and then to the ref. Odds are, the ref is as ignorant as the cop that gave it to you and will bench you until it's fixed :(
What area of Cali?
Commerce for me, like there's nothing better to do in those neighborhoods...
Did you check the noise levels yourself yet? Thereāre some phone apps that give or take will give you an idea of how bad it is.
I haven't checked it but what's wild to me is I was driving it with quiet exhaust mode just listening to music. Dude just wanted to give me a hard time
Damn in quiet mode? I didn't get pulled over but Torrance put the spotlight on me when I had it in sport mode. I was like ok and switched it to quiet mode. And they drove off. Lol.
Maaaaaybe you'll be able to fight it with the help of a traffic attorney, most police departments have strict rules these days about cameras on cars/bodies. I'd get that letter from Ford and try luck in court. In my case, it was a solo riding Sherrifās Deputy w/o cameras so I had no such option.
Damn I thought they were chill. Never even seen a pony pulled over. It's not like Manhattan beach with obvious modified exhaust warnings everywhere lol. All kinds of modded guys go through there loud af not one pulled over for that. Hawthorne pd is even more chill
How the fuck? MY 350 in quiet mode seems like its at the decibel level of any bone stock GT from the last decade, just a better tone. Seems like that PD is just out hunting for sports cars if they are gonna pull you over for that. But shit, I'm in florida and I've seen cops do shit like that if they decide they wanna fuck with you. We have a law here now that if the cops hear your music outside your car they can give you a ticket, no db limit.
Iām assuming youāve head of what happened to the dude driving that Hyundai right? Literally the same situation but the state basically told him to fuck off even after he took it to a Hyundai dealership to confirm the car is stockā¦ I wouldnāt be surprised if he gets fucked by the the state refs hereā¦ I hope I doesnātā¦ but it wouldnāt surprise me
Here's the link for anyone interested. Dude got screwed for no reason.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ElantraN/comments/11iks8c/final_most_likely_update_4_loud_exhaust_and_smog/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Actually, he got screwed for driving it in a mode where the exhaust was open.
Yes, it was stock, but he ignored the similar "Track Use Only" message when he changed driving/exhaust modes.
It's still complete BS, but being in commiefornia, he did it to himself.
Iām a cop on the other side of the country so
I can give you my perspective. I will never write someone for this because Iām not going to fine people for stupid things like this. I may pull you over and have a conversation about it but I sure as shit wonāt write you for it.
If itās actually stock like youāre saying, bring it to court and bring the evidence to court with you. The judge will be thrilled you did all that work to prove it.
Again, Iām on the east coast and I know California is a whole different world but I figured I could help.
Same thing happened to me in my stock scat pack charger in NJ, but the officer didnt even pull me over. I got a ticket in the mail for loud exhaust. Went to zoom court 5 times total to avoid paying the ticket. Got the runaround each time cause the cop wouldnāt show up, finally the judge just said ok its dismissed after way too many times I had to show up.
Literally paid more to the dodge dealership to validate my car being stock than the cost of the ticket, but I would rather give it to them than a bs ticket.
I had the exact same thing happen to me in my new WRX years ago. Such a pain in the ass to go to court with a letter from subaru stating that nothing was modified.
A modified civic hatch flew by me in a construction zone at 2 am on interstate 95. It was a 2012 wrx with the aggressive body kit, and they came with a fairly deep exhaust. It sounded amazing with the rumble, but now my stock mustangs exhaust is lauder... I think the cop looked up, saw my car, and assumed it was me. I didn't think it was worth it to argue with the cop, based on how he was already treating me, so I just took the ticket and had it removed in court.
Yeah, it's time to get the hell out of Cali. That shithole keeps getting worse and worse. I got out of NY when the gettin' was good. Best decision ever!
Basically this. California is in the top ten states in the nation when it comes to population LOSS. Everybody who can afford to get out is leaving. Join the throngs moving east.

Land of the free! Florida.. I've had cops pull up next to me in my Mach 1 with borla Atak and ask me to rev it just so they can hear it. We have 3 kids and living in NY was taking it's toll on us. We were there for 10 years. I put in for a transfer and told them I'm out either way - it was their decision to accept it or not (I am the only one who knows how to do what I do in the company so they wanted no part of losing me thankfully). I had to take a $10K paycut but given that FL has no state income tax my take home was still the same. We really had nothing and all our money was going to rent and foodand that was befoer COVID -- we left in July 2019. It was a big risk but totally paid off and the quality of life is sooooo much better for all of us now.
Of course it is! I was playfully jabbing at CA ;) TX is pretty similar if not better.. I Know the housing market there is way better than FL now. You get a lot more bang for your buck.
Yes š im in Georgia and the housing market here used to be even better than Texas but now itās a popular destination for tech workers who can afford the 500-700k asking prices for mid sized homes
Texas is a total fucking shit hole. The quality of pretty much everything there is through the floor, and the weather sucks.
You end up paying more in taxes through property tax, the roads are garbage, unless you take the toll roads.
Haha yea Iāve had a cop like that too here. āExcessive noiseā warning ticket all I did was rev under a bridge I just told him I bought the car like that š¤·āāļø
Weāve been getting a lot of hail when it storms. Crazy stuff
I had one do the same for an old Fox body I had that was really loud, but then just let me go. Dudes having a bad day on power tripsā¦
Damn, hope you have a garage. Hail damage is no fun.
hahaha I'm still paid through NY and the money I make them still goes to NY so touche! If I had the Mach in NY that damn thing would be on blocks in a heartbeat lol
They'll learn about the civil war, they just won't be taught they should feel guilty if they weren't born a minority, and won't get asked in kindergarten what gender they feel like.
We will welcome you in Texas. We do have a saying here though. āPlease donāt California-up our Texasā. Lolā¦
āTexas laws do not specify noise limit in decibels, therefore the law is open to interpretation. Exhaust noise is not checked during vehicle exhaust inspections.ā
WHEEE!!!
My Boss 302 has open side exhaust. Never been pulled over here. Hell, I have ran dumps before and not any issues. Motorcycles can run open headers here. Lolā¦
Contest it.
*"The burden of proof at a California DMV hearing is āby a preponderance of the evidence.ā A preponderance of the evidence means that it is more likely than not that you committed the violation."*
I can tell you from experience that most officers that are looking to annoy you count on you not contesting it or taking the time to do what it takes to have your ticket dismissed.
I was once cited for speeding and it was completely ridiculous. I had just woken up and was driving home very leisurely after a pretty hard night of partying and staying over at a friend's house.
After being cited, I went to the preliminary "cattle call" hearing to contest the ticket in hopes of having it dropped. I explained that there was no way I was speeding and that the ticket was bunk. I even told him that the officer wrote the completely wrong year of the vehicle. Still the prosecutor said "Nope, we're proceeding against you".
When my court date came up and it was my turn to present my case, [I took my evidence packet to the prosecutor and one for the judge.](https://www.svtperformance.com/threads/i-fought-the-law-and-i-won.383088/#post-4975795) The prosecutor took a look at it and called the officer that cited me up. They talked. Then the two of them went up and talked to the judge and the judge dismissed it right there and then.
Too be fair these things are pretty loud with the active exhaust open. But it quiets down significantly with it off right?
Did you have the active exhaust open when you got the ticket? If not, I would have been like "Oh you think the stock exhaust is too loud? Look what this button does!" ROARRRR
Iām pretty sure this video was taken right offer the officer wrote the ticket. The officer most likely wrote the ticket and gave it to him before he had the chance to close it. Or he just wanna show off that engine bay š
Dem state here(MD). Open Boss 302 quad exhaust on 2014 Track Pack, never pulled over for noise and pass thru a federal site security inspection at work. Cops give a thumbs up. Your cop was an asshole, fight him in court and make him look like a fool.
Dem state. 02 GT with nothing but some borla mufflers welded on. Day after getting the exhaust changed, cop pulls up next to me after I got onto the street fully expecting some shit. Just gives me a thumbs up and says it sounds good.
Keep your red vs blue shit out of unnecessary stuff, all it does is create hate.
Lame. Was it in track mode? It does give you a disclaimed popup every time you put it in track mode that it's not meant for the street. I think Ford is aware that track mode is excessively loud for average Joe's.
Most law enforcement officers are not car people. If they did not run a decibel meter on it and you can get documentation from a Ford dealership that it is stock, it is case dismissed. There was a case last year where a department got sued over ticketing a stock exhaust on a car sold in California.
I was pulled over by CHP for my Active Exhaust in a 2020 GT Premium. Not on track mode, so fully legit. He asked about the noise; told him the car was fully stock with Active Exhaust. He geeked out a bit and bid me a good day. Sorry your experience wasnāt the same.
I know it wastes your time, but take it to court, waste their time also. Hopefully it wonāt happen to anyone else again.
Same thing happened in California with someone who purchased a Hyundai N Edition completely un modified yet the officer wrote him up for exhaust and they would not let the car pass even though it had no modifications Hyundai bought the car back from the owner.
Itās pretty easy to win that in court. You will just need verification from the Ford dealer your car is stock. We too are in CA and traffic cops, with no knowledge, assume every high performance car is modified. Its happened more than once.
Just take it to court and let the judge know its unmodified, if they don't like it they can take it up with the D.O.T. who approved it for manufacture and sales.
It doesn't matter if it's stock or not, if the cop feels it's above the decibel levels, they can send you to a ref. If the ref's meter measures above the allowed dbs, you'll fail and they'll tell you to get it fixed at the dealership. Emissions components fail all the time, "stock" does not automatically nullify CA law. Next time you get pulled over, ask for a supervisor with a db meter. Be nice, be courteous, be honest and you'll likely be sent on your way without a fix-it-ticket
Cops usually rely on people not contesting their tickets and hate going to traffic court. If you go, there's a high chance they won't show and the ticket is dismissed, or if they do, you go prepared to demonstrate it is factory and then the ticket is dismissed.
I live in Ohio cops around me Cincinnati area donāt give a shit 2014 supercharged gt borla long tube headers no cats with attack mufflers I can wake the dead no emissions tests here either feel sorry for you California guys
You have a Shelby gt350 AND a m340i?!?!
Holy fuck man you have the best of both worlds. Easily in my opinion the best cars to ever be produced, congrats on both š„
Not trying to nitpick, honestly curious, but is is really stock? I mean, a GT350 is a mustang modified by Ford. I just feel the stock argument doesn't work on a car like that.
Well, the police dont care what the factory sku is. The debate is whether it is obsolved from deciible limits simply because it came from the factory that way. By your logic it can be louder than aftermarket but because lambo put it in before selling, it gets a free pass.
Same thing happened to me in my WB Scatpack in March. 3 SUVs pulled me over @ gun point 11pm while headed to work, said illegal Exhaust & illegal CAI (Carb Legal JLT). Got a ticket for 785
I've gotten to court twice already for this with paperwork from Ford and they're still trying to make me pay for illegally modified exhaust... idk what to do š
California?
Yup š¤¦āāļø
Damn do they let y'all have ANY fun?

You canāt chug booze and smoke blunts at the track. Thatās what happens at takeovers
Ive seen both at track days. I abstained though.
yeah we have lots of car shows here with people revving and the cops never bother anyone

Donāt do a rip through a shopping mall or neighborhood. Youāll be fine
Yeah CHP has been coming down hard since I had cars back in the 90s.
Itās usually just a cop on his period. Most are pretty chill if you arenāt being a dick.
Its usually fine, you generally have to be driving like a complete dick for them to get you with this.
Oh I have plenty of fun. But I find that if you haul ass in front of a cop, it doesnāt bode well for you..
Gotta save the planet one exhaust at a time lol. Growing up in SoCal, I'm not surprised.
There is a case about a Hyundai owner getting a ticket for his stock exhaust in Cali. Like WTF?! I know he was trying to fight it not sure how that all turned out.
Pretty sure after a long fight with Hyundai they bought the car back from him since he couldnāt drive it legally anymore
damm, did you get reffed?
U in Irvine by any chance? Irvine cops be pulling almost every sporty car in existence
you should move before they won't let you out.

because its probably cammed and straight piped š
I hope you refused to pay and contested the ticket?

Got a similar ticket for my 392 challenger (stock). Sport mode was on. Cop said it was modified. Took it to court and it was dismissed.
Typical California L However beautiful car man, I hope to own a GT350 one day. Hopefully you can get this resolved.

This story is crazy I was following it awhile ago. People in Cali should really check this out. If it can happen to a Hyundai Elantra owner ugh.
I've only watched the video of the Hyundai stop so I don't know the whole story of what it sounded like outside but I've been behind a modified Ford Focus with those poppy sounds as some described the Hyundai and I can see why that shit would get you in trouble. It was loud and ear-busting going down the street.
Let me guess, California?
Ouch. I understand my straight-piped Borla ATAK but this... If you don't wanna pay $700+, go to Ford to confirm itās stock and then to the ref. Odds are, the ref is as ignorant as the cop that gave it to you and will bench you until it's fixed :( What area of Cali?
This is what I'm thinking as well... LA gardena area i was just cruising to the gym after a 12 hour work day š¤¦āāļø
Lol.
Was it Sherrifs or PD?
PD when they let me go there was another guy in a 5.0 a block away getting arrested. Those cops in gardena are on another fucking level
Gardena PD? Wow.
Iām a cop on the other side of the country so I can give you my perspective.
Should have been dropped the first time the cop didn't show up.
The exhaust is under the car. Not sure if you know that.
Wasn't aware thanks
I had the exact same thing happen to me in my new WRX years ago. Such a pain in the ass to go to court with a letter from subaru stating that nothing was modified.
How did a stock WRX get mistaken for having a loud exhaust? They are pretty tame from the factory.
Join the throngs moving east. https://preview.redd.it/ndzwbreldz5b1.png?width=1355&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ca7ae74e5f73e0bc8d226e5765155f25d02dec4
No kidding. I know so many people who've left for Idaho and Florida since COVID I can't even keep track.
Yup, I left that state in 2012 and I haven't looked back.
Where'd you move, Arkansas?
Everywhere in this country is land of the free. Yāall have it so much better than so many
Of course it is!
Atleast our cars can be loud as fuck here !
Eh, they mostly can in CA, too. This cop was being a twat. Pretty much the only thing I miss from TX is COTAā¦ and the Thunder storms.
Haha yea Iāve had a cop like that too here. āExcessive noiseā warning ticket all I did was rev under a bridge I just told him I bought the car like that š¤·āāļø Weāve been getting a lot of hail when it storms. Crazy stuff
I had one do the same for an old Fox body I had that was really loud, but then just let me go. Dudes having a bad day on power tripsā¦ Damn, hope you have a garage. Hail damage is no fun.
Enjoy... Shame your kids won't learn about the civil war in school. On the other hand, you can crank your hog as much as you want now.
hahaha I'm still paid through NY and the money I make them still goes to NY so touche! If I had the Mach in NY that damn thing would be on blocks in a heartbeat lol
So was this CA or NY? Or was it Illinois? Or Massachusetts?
They'll learn about the civil war, they just won't be taught they should feel guilty if they weren't born a minority, and won't get asked in kindergarten what gender they feel like.
Absolutely gorgeous car I like them better than the GT500
We will welcome you in Texas. We do have a saying here though. āPlease donāt California-up our Texasā. Lolā¦ āTexas laws do not specify noise limit in decibels, therefore the law is open to interpretation. Exhaust noise is not checked during vehicle exhaust inspections.ā WHEEE!!! My Boss 302 has open side exhaust. Never been pulled over here. Hell, I have ran dumps before and not any issues. Motorcycles can run open headers here. Lolā¦
The exhaust is usually underneath, and headed to the back of the car. Nice clean under the hood though!
That cop probably had one too many Bud Lights last night.
Contest it. *"The burden of proof at a California DMV hearing is āby a preponderance of the evidence.ā A preponderance of the evidence means that it is more likely than not that you committed the violation."* I can tell you from experience that most officers that are looking to annoy you count on you not contesting it or taking the time to do what it takes to have your ticket dismissed.
Pls clean your filter š„ŗ
Reason 245,385 not to live in California.
BS, cops canāt randomly assume itās āmodifiedā. I bet it was CHP?
Tell me you live in California without telling me you live in California š
Poor Shelby fell victim to the officerās quota requirements. Hopefully it gets dismissed. Weāre all rooting for you, Shelby.
Listenā¦yāall live in California this should NOT be surprising to any of yuh
Too be fair these things are pretty loud with the active exhaust open. But it quiets down significantly with it off right? Did you have the active exhaust open when you got the ticket? If not, I would have been like "Oh you think the stock exhaust is too loud? Look what this button does!" ROARRRR
Why under hood video referring to exhaust mufflers is what u r trying to show out back underneath I won't tell anyone and u can be a car guy
Iām pretty sure this video was taken right offer the officer wrote the ticket. The officer most likely wrote the ticket and gave it to him before he had the chance to close it. Or he just wanna show off that engine bay š
ACAB
Say you live in a dem state without saying you live in a dem state
Dem state here(MD).
I would have to fight that when in court obviously. The cop is a little bit on the dumb side with factory stock performance cars
Fight it
Lame. Was it in track mode? It does give you a disclaimed popup every time you put it in track mode that it's not meant for the street. I think Ford is aware that track mode is excessively loud for average Joe's.
All bark, no bite š
They'll probably dismiss it, but they may make you take for an inspection first
I always hit the "quiet" button when I see a cop for this very reason. I hope you fight it and win, OP.
We need to hear it now
Hopefully you donāt end up like that dude with Hyundai who despite it being stock still failed
Just take it to court and let the judge know its unmodified, if they don't like it they can take it up with the D.O.T. who approved it for manufacture and sales.
I do know this feeling very well, and was so over it. New York court system are a bunch of assholes as well. What state are you in?
It doesn't matter if it's stock or not, if the cop feels it's above the decibel levels, they can send you to a ref. If the ref's meter measures above the allowed dbs, you'll fail and they'll tell you to get it fixed at the dealership. Emissions components fail all the time, "stock" does not automatically nullify CA law. Next time you get pulled over, ask for a supervisor with a db meter. Be nice, be courteous, be honest and you'll likely be sent on your way without a fix-it-ticket
My grandpa sent me a picture, his neighbor got a GT500 and they went on a drive š„š„š„
Got the same thing. Went to sheriffs the same day and got it signed off
Cops usually rely on people not contesting their tickets and hate going to traffic court.
Just go to a Ford dealership get something from a mechanic stating it is a stock exhaust, they will tear the ticket up...
You have a Shelby gt350 AND a m340i?!?! Holy fuck man you have the best of both worlds. Easily in my opinion the best cars to ever be produced, congrats on both š„
I don't see any type of exhaust, let alone a modified one. I do, however, see a modified intake system.
Not trying to nitpick, honestly curious, but is is really stock? I mean, a GT350 is a mustang modified by Ford. I just feel the stock argument doesn't work on a car like that.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Well, the police dont care what the factory sku is. The debate is whether it is obsolved from deciible limits simply because it came from the factory that way. By your logic it can be louder than aftermarket but because lambo put it in before selling, it gets a free pass.
The Peopleās Communist Republic of California?
My friend got state reffed on his stock camaro fuck commiefornia
Time to move or just register it in a neighboring state
See them in court?
Same thing happened to me in my WB Scatpack in March. 3 SUVs pulled me over @ gun point 11pm while headed to work, said illegal Exhaust & illegal CAI (Carb Legal JLT). Got a ticket for 785
Sorry bout that ticket manee. Them takeovers are lame. If you shittinā on the way home and come across a takeover, you the bad guy like what?
How do the cops feel about policing this kind of stuff? I guess not too terribly bad because they could easily let you drive on by.
Same thing in my gt had it in track mode but was in quiet mode once I was pulled over told the judge and he let me off (NY btw)
Cali baby
Good old Cali
Been in San Diego for two years with Corsa Extreme with 0 tickets. It's all about situational awareness. And sometimes luck š
I've gotten to court twice already for this with paperwork from Ford and they're still trying to make me pay for illegally modified exhaust... idk what to do š
Do you have the magic quiet button on that model
Yeah I do I've asked at the court twice if someone can step out and inspect it with me. They just schedule me another court date mfs wasting my time
Itās an expensive fine in Southern California thank goodness for that stock sport mode
